[Q] multiple roms? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm wondering if its possible to partition my sd card so that half of it can remain baked snack with everything I have set up then the other half to cm6 final then just flash the roms and kernels from the applicable side when I want to run it. So essentially I have 2 to choose from each with their own backups ext...
Possible?

Kinda like a dual boot box... Is there an app for that?

I don't really want an app for it. I think that would end up slowing the system down substantially. I just want to be to choose a partition flash the rom from that partition then do a nand restore for that rom(located on same partition) and have that side of my sd card already set for that particular rom.

cool idea. for now I just nand restore when I want to switch back and forth but it takes a bit of time. If it was as quick as rebooting to another partition that would be hot.

That's very possible. We dualboot our pc from Windows to Linux so should not be impossible. Someone just needs to make it work.

Maybe I'll suggest it in the Dev section someone in there will have the know how to get this done.

well the rom doesnt install to the sdcard. hence the reason you can format the sdcard and still have a working phone. it installs to the phones internal memory.
your best bet is to do what is stated above. do a nandriod of the roms you want, setup how you want and a titanium backup of each to restore your settings.

So I can't just partition it and have 2 different "sides" for each roms information like I can't tell Baked Snack to look at "A:" and CM6 to look at "B:"? are we sure about this? Maybe even partition the memory inside the phone to 2 different roms then choose 1 from boot loader? Think I'm going to try to post something in dev section and hope they won't get too angry at me.

You know, i think the main reason this hasn't been discussed before is that previous phones didn't have the nand capacity to hold multiple roms that you would switch between. Even at 512mb it is pushing it depending on how many apps you are going to have installed on the phone on each rom that aren't going to be insstalled to sd.

Well I have 270 free on the phone and I still haven't moved every app I can over to the SD cdard. I think Cyanogen is smaller then most other roms the Zip is only 70 mb compared to baked snack wich is 170, well over double. I think it would be pretty easy to have enough space. This may hinder performace if internal memory is completely maxed out though, not quite sure.

[Q] Dual Booting? Need Dev advice.

I originally posted this in the Q/A section but no one seemed to have any reasonable answer.
Is it possible to partition my SD card so I can have baked snack on 1 half and CM6 on the other with all their user options ect.... saved to that respective side of the card? I'm not really wanting a true dual boot here but I would like to maybe nand backup my backed snack save it to backed snack's partition. Then flash cm6 and kernel ect.. and already have all my apps settings in place. Or maybe even partition the internal mem so we could have a true dual boot. Is it possible to partition the internal mem and perhaps mess around with the boot loader in order choose which partition you will be booting from?

Did you try using both NAND and Titanium backups? If you make two backups, one for each ROM, you should be able to recover everything fairly easily when you want to go back and forth.
I suppose it would be possible. Stuff would load pretty slow though and you'd have to manually create such a setup. I haven't looked at the bootstrapping, but I can't think of any reason you couldn't mount the data heavy positions from the sdcard. Not easy by most people though.

i asked for this a few months back and was told to just use rom manager. make backups of both roms and just use that to go between them. dual booting isnt possible with our boot loader.
OP, without getting too "techy", what's being overlooked is the fact that you'd have to get into the BIOS itself end change where it loads the os from for it to work.
Also, in theory, with the os running from the SD card, things like mounting the phone as a disk drive would be impossible without turning the phone off, and that would just suck...
It's a cool idea, but I think having everything draw from.one source would make it lag like hell even, so I dunno.... I don't really get your reasoning behind switching between different roms on a constant basis, but I'd think about the cons too
All spelling errors thanks to xt9 on my Evo!

I did this with my tp2 had winnow and android on. Had Haret.exe worked great just used a explorer to SD card clicked and loaded up. Also had dual bootup at startup. Picked which rom I wanted to run. Was indeed nice.

Not to get off op topic but how do you get rid off the nand backups on the phone. Have a few on roms I don't use anymore.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
you can get rid of backups a few ways if you use rom manager you can just go to manage and retore roms long clikc it and select delete. if you dont use rom manager youc an set your device to disck drive while hooked up tot he pc and manually navigate to the back up and delete it.
In reality, you could make as many NAND backups as you want, and restore any of of them from recovery whenever you want!

Would you not need to constantly update the nand backups?
Also...if I were to do this with say CM6 and something else...would I have 4G issues from flipping back and forth? I know CM6 doesn't have 4G and want to make sure it's just missing, not that it messed with the radio.
Alrigh then I guess I'll just give up on this and do it the old fashion way with band and titanium back ups. Am I going to need the full version of titanium for this? Will it make the whole process alot quicker?

ALL AOSP Roms FAIL, Help

I don't post here often, but I am on IRC all the time for those of you that do know me. I have been having serious issues with the AOSP Roms. Cyanogen, Ruby, and Incredible Does all either freeze on me or reboot sooner or later. I've went so far as to install nothing else except the Rom and it still freezes or reboots. I've done this test with all three, I even dialed down the processor while on them and still NO DICE. I'm not an Android expert, but I do have a bachelor's in IT so I feel I'm pretty tech savvy. I was told on IRC that others are having similar problems with all the AOSP roms. I'm trying to get a consensus of who else is experiencing this and some more suggestions on how to fix this.
I appreciate all the help
~Thanks , AnthonyKash
Yeah this is very odd. A couple of us in ##incredibleroms have been working with AnthonyKash to figure this out. So far we have had no luck at all. No Sense UI ROMs do this to him, it seems like it's only vanilla ROMs. Very strange............

I know you posted this months ago but was wondering if you figured out what is causing this? I too can't use ANY aosp Rome because they all end up being unusable after a couple of hours. It's almost like the CPU slows down to a dramatic crawl. Only way to fix is to do a battery pull to reset. I have cleared cache, dalvik, uninstalled setcpu, all with no luck. Anyone have any insights?
Check integrity and space of SD card - maybe even remove, copy contents to PC, reformat to FAT32, copy a few nandroids back to SD and reinstall in device. Also make sure there is ample space on SD.
Absent that, have you tried a different SD card? AOSP ROMs interface w/ the SD considerably more than Sense ROMs.
Also, check radio version - recommend at least 2.15.xx
HBOOT version may come into play as well.
+1 to the above post. Seems like some sense files are bring left somewhere.

I don't think its my SD Card, I just got a new one a month ago and the same thing happened with my old SD Card. I have 4 gigs left empty of a 16 gig sd card. Would it make a difference if I installed from EMMC using RA recovery?
Hboot 0.92
Radio 2.15.00.09.01
Am on the latest versions of Hboot and radio right?
One thing I do find very weird is that even after doing full wipes of user data, cache and dalvik, when I boot up on CM7 my wifi settings still work. I would have expected I needed to reenter all of those settings. Or does this stuff get saved to the SD or internal storage...normal? If it is not, then why are data wipes in Recovery not cleanning up my files?
I've not had this problem.

Yep, those are the latest versions.
AOSP ROMs offer automatic reinstall of apps and data to Google when flashing, if that option is checked when flashed. That's where/how/why settings and/or apps still appear as before.
So, if Sense ROMs are not wonky, maybe it is an app you have installed on the AOSP ROM?
Long diagnostic road, (well understood by us IT folk ) but perhaps uninstall apps in reverse install date order of the app, reboot as you go thru, see which one may have been a culprit.
Absent that, perhaps factory reset in recovery, install an AOSP rom w/out choosing to reinstall apps.
Maybe try another different AOSP ROM?
I know the SD interacts quite a bit more with the SD compared to Sense ROMs - again, maybe copy SD card contents to PC, reformat SD to FAT32 either on the PC or in phone, maybe both - then d/l an AOSP ROM on a clean SD, see if it's still wonky.

Sense ROMS work great, its AOSP roms that are giving my phone fits lol. Well last night I tried something new.
-I changed my radio from 2.15.00.09.01 to 2.15.00.07.28 Official Froyo radio.
-Installed CM7 #14 from the EMMC versus SD CARD.
-"Hit Wipe All" in recovery about 10 times in a row before I flashed CM7
I hope changing the radio to "official" is what does it. Anyone running AOSP roms using the leaked radio 2.15.00.09.01 ?
Radio?
Yes, do let us know whether the xx.09 radio was the (a) culprit.
I run the older 2.15.xx.07.28 one, never had issues w/ AOSP ROMs.
I had an issue with this using cm7 nightlies, and I WOULD post it there but the new, ~totally awesome~ rule they are implementing (can't post in the dev forum w/ less than 10 posts) prevents me from doing that (Which means I have to spam the other sub forums?).
ANYWAYS, I got a bigger sd card from a friend, and I went to erase it under the sd card settings. Then i got a low space notification, saying I had 9 mb free of 7 Terbytes. Rebooting the phone caused it to go into boot loop. If your situation sounds like mine then do this
Boot into CWM, and from there you can mount the SD card and format it, as well as copy any backups.
I did not have any luck with restoring the phone to a previous AOSP rom, even after wiping the cache/dalvik. Maybe there's another one that could be wiped that I didn't do. Anyways, I installed a Sense based rom, and from there I was able to install Cyanogen mod.
Good luck.

Well it turns out that the radio version I was using was not the issue because the phone became unresponsive this morning when I tried to wake it up. To be specific, it does allow me to swipe to unlock but painfully in slow motion.
So that rules at the radio...which leaves me with its either the ROM/Kernel or some rogue app.
So this morning I wiped all user data in recovery and reinstalled CM7#14 but this time I did not log on to my google account during setup and have not installed any apps. So far no issues, but the true test is trying to wake the phone up tomorrow in the morning. If there are no issues, then that solves it (ITS A FREAKING APP).
If it is a rogue app that has been haunting me these past couple of weeks then who has the best way to identify which one is the offender? Why would a rogue app only affect me using AOSP roms and not Sense?
My suspicions are with..(Locale, Beautiful Widgets, ADW EX, Swype, CardioTrainer, Handcent) but I guess process of elimination is what its going to take.
Thanks to all for the help and recommendations.

Titanium backup MOVE TO SD not working..

I hope someone can help. I have been using TITANIUM BACKUP PRO on my EVO with the MOVE APP TO SD for apps that FROYO 2.2 doesnt automatically detect it can move to SD. It has been working fine.... UNTIL this past week when I would try to move an APP to SD and it says it is moving it but nothing happens and it doesnt move (it still shows I can move it to SD in TB PRO). Any app designed for moving to SD with APP2SD FROYO works fine. Can anyone tell me what I can do to get this feature back working? I am using SPRINT LOVERS ROM and one of the ne battery life KERNELS.. I thought it might be the kernel I flashed so I flashed back the stock kernel. SAME ISSUE. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling TB PRO but still same issue.
I did post this on the forum for TB PRO support and was told it was sent to the developer but I have heard nothing and really need to get this fixed.
Any help would be appreciated....
What I recently did was installed Dark tremors a2sd on my phone. It actually moves all your apps to sd and frees up so much memory. It's frickin awesome. First you have to find out if it will work with your rom, ther is a list of roms that works with on the DT page which I wil post. I put it on my wifes phone which had Ava and it didnt work. I then put her on Myn's Warm rom, which I think everyone should be on anyway. If you want to switch roms and dont want to worry bout reinstalling all your apps, use Titanium Backup and do a batch bacup through the menu. Backup all user apps and system info. Then in the new rom you can go back into TB and do a restore and it will reinstall all your info. Second you have to partition your sd card if you haven't already. To do so you must first create a backup of your sd to your computer as prtitioning will wipe the sd. Also I only now how to partition the sd using Amon RA recovery, it's much easier than using clockwork. Partition up to ext3.
To find Dak Tremors flashable zip go here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715938&highlight=apps2sd
I'll tell you what, if you cant figure out the rest, PM me and I will walk you through it. Good luck and sorry for the book, I tend to get carried away. LOL

Well yes, the sd needs to be partitioned. A plus is that all your apps go to the sd leaving much more valuble space in your phones memory and it also automaticaly moves them. No need to move manually anymore.
Also when you partition it only partitions around 500mb, you still have plenty of card. I looked and your rom doesnt support it but I would recommend moving to Myn's Warm anyways. It's much faster and smoother and so worth it. It allows you to use programs such as DT. If you want help with it or have more questions send me a personal message. Just put your cursor over my name and click. Then find where to send me a personal message. Just to avoid cluttering the thread.

Sprint lovers if just the stock rom rooted. Myn's is a custom rom with built in themes, mods, añd tweaks. You can use things such as Dark Tremors and more. It gives you the ability to expand your herizons. You could always do a nand backup and then wipe and try the rom out. If you dont Like it you can restore your backup. The keyboard is a little different as far as looks but I actually use a different theme which is really cool. I dont know if it works with sprint lovers. Its called Riptide's colorNclear- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=727117
Also, I dont know if you got tether to work but it's included in Myn. Myn is also working on his newest update which implements the new system updates and is supposed to be rockin.
If you want the most out of your evo then try it out. If you're fine with what you got, that's cool to. It's all up to you.

need a desire vets advice

hello all. i just recenlt bricked my galaxy s telus fascinate and got a desire replacement. i managed to get the root working without a issue (was superscared because of previous brick). now im looking for a rom. a good rom. coming from touch wiz, sense is mint. i love it.
so i want something that like stock sense with sense widgets without all the bloat and hopefully a proper app2sd (the stock app2sd is only moving like 1/3 of the data to sd and 2/3 is stayin in internal storage) . i heard desire hd roms r good but i dont really see the upside cause i dont know much about the phone yet just the OS. im runnin froyo 2.2 with hboot 93.0001.
any info would b mint. thx in advance
ps. only 1 day in, and the desire is running laps around the fascinate in every aspect except afew hardware issues like
-no internal sd card
-psx4droid is alot slower but i do own a hacked psp so no biggy
-and the app2sd sucks considering i went from 2 gigs internal storage to 133 mbs
but interface rocks. awaiting some opinions
You may want to take a gander at this thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/231930-desire-index-everything-desire-here.html
It has links to all the usual suspects when it comes to the different ROMs available, and once you get familiar with the ones that are out there you can do more detailed searches to see which one you may like the most. After that just download and get to flashing. As long as you nandroid backup before flashing anything you can always go back.

what about kernels? i had a overclocked voodoo kernel on my sgs and it ran games and emulators amazingly. ff9 on ps4drioid was running like 95% speed. any speed kernels or voodoo kernels available? and allso i hear the best way to manage storage is data and app2sd +. how do i go about installing that? b4 or after i flash the rom?
1. The Desire has an Adreno GPU, not a PowerVR SGX - so the graphics performance will be MUCH more slower, than the GS'. Also I use this kernel, gives me the best performance.
2. Most custom ROMs have that feature preinstalled (so installs automatically, when flashing the ROM), just make sure you have partitioned your SD Card (fat32+ext 2/3/4).

how do i go about partitioning the sd card? lm fat with a fresshreformat from my pc. now im quite sure ext/4 is the safest and most stable partition to use and 2 being the worst. on sgs, voodoo did the ext/4 for me and didnt have to do the work. so im confused on this part since ive seen nothing with a voodoo tag on it since i joined. and voodoo had to be deactivated everytime u flashed new software. does that still apply here>?
Use Gparted or easus partition for that.
Create a FAT32 partition first and then an ext4 partition (both primary).
You have to look for a2sd+ here in the ROMs description to make it work (LeeDroid definiately works). Make sure you have partitioned the SD card then just flash the ROM (of course nandroid backup first & full wipe) and it will go, you have to do nothing. It is an auto-script.

[Q] Wiping phone and starting over

I have been having all sorts of problems with my phone, mainly from it running super low on storage space, even though I have moved virtually everything to the SD card that I can, and keep wiping the address book (which of course screws everything up). Some kind folks had helped me out a lot, but in the end suggested I just wipe it all and start over, but I was waiting to get a new SD card, which I finally have, and I just wanted to make sure I understand everything correctly before leaping in.
So I understand I need to format the SD card, and I was hoping someone could give me or point me to a guide to doing so. I understand I need to get A2SD, is that right? And so once I format it, I can just put everything on my old card onto the new one, yeah? And I understand I need to install Amon RA and get rid of Clockwork Mod, I get that. So then after I do all that, I should just flash a new ROM and not restore anything, and if things seem better, then I can batch restore apps, is that right? I think I just want to stick with the stock ROM, but is there a rooted version of the latest update available?
If someone would be so kind as to walk me through this one last time, keeping in mind I am pretty much a noob, that would be much appreciated.
Oh, I also would love to do the Firerat custom MTD partitions thing (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855424), tried to do it once before but screwed some things up, had to revert back to a previous backup, so figured now would be a good time to try that again, so if anyone can give me the rundown on that too, that would be super.
Thanks so much!
im gonna try and help you here, first back up everything you have on your sd card to your computer so you dont loose it when partitioning, then download a PCIMG36.zip of amon ra, put it on sd card and boot into bootloader and select yes when prompted, that will put amon ra as your recovery. now that you have amon ra and already backed up the stuff in your sd card to your computer go ahead and in recovery selcect partition sd card, its gonna ask you for a swap size( i use 0 but you can use 32 if you like, 0 works fine), then its going to ask for partition size for me 1024 is more than enough(1024 equals 1gb), once this is done, select upgrade ext2 to ext3. now your sd card is partitioned. you can go ahead and put all your stuff back into your sd card and flash the rom(for a2sd to work your rom has to have it built in, other wise you are going to have to flash it) if your rom has it built in it will automatically kick in. once your rom is flashed you can go ahead and restore apps, i would do them one by one, sometimes there are issues when doing batch, and also unless the app is really important i would only restore the app not its data, but i do restore app and data for important apps. if all goes well you should have a lot more free memory on your phone, you can check if apps are going to sd ext by opening titanium back up and at the bottom you should see sd a2sd or sd ext and next to it amount of free memory, if your phone internal is still low after all this and gets lower when installing apps you can fix it by going into terminal emulator and typing
su (hit enter)
a2sd reinstall (hit enter, this will move all apps to sd ext)
any more questions ust ask
With the new 2.1/3.0 hybrids, you're better off using larger partitions. I found swap 64 or 128 and EXT of 2048 works out better, if you have an 8gig or larger SD Card
Thanks so much for the quick responses! I am going to give this a shot later tonight, but another quick question.
I think I've got down how to partition it, thanks a lot for breaking that down for me. And I did just get a 32 GB SD card, so I'll go with the 128 swap and EXT of 2048, that's no big deal.
Now for what ROM to flash - I've just used the stock before, haven't flashed any other ROMs, but if I'm going this far, figure I might as well give it a try, why not. So what ROM would you recommend that has A2SD already built in?? If you could just give me a quick run down (or point me to somewhere where there is one, I'm sure it already exists) on how to go about flashing the ROM (I think I just download it though and install it through bootloader, is that right??), that would be super appreciated.
Thanks again!!
Roms are flashed through recovery and what Rom to use wow that will get you a lot of opinions.

man there are so many roms for so many tastes, but i would suggest Vaelpak 3.2 rc2 which is still a sense rom, but has a lot of customization options. to flash your fresh rom you need to put the rom on your sd card, then turn off phone, go into bootloader, go into recovery, select wipe, and wipe cache, dalvik cache and data, do each twice to make sure, then go back and select flash zip from sd card, scroll to the bottom and look for the rom, select it and reboot
Once again, thanks for the replies and the detailed explanation, much appreciated. Didn't get around to it last night, will do so tonight. I definitely understand there are a ton of ROMs out there, but am just looking for something pretty simple I guess, since all I've used is the stock so far. Vaelpak 3.2 rc2 sounds good, I'll give that a try. So just to make sure I understand, when I install this ROM, that's everything, right, so I don't need to worry about installing the latest Android software. Or do I still need to install the latest Gingerbread update (and if so, how do I go about doing that?) in addition to installing this ROM?
Sorry for the million questions, and thanks again!
VaelPak is a very extensive ROM. If you REALLY want to stay close to stock, but have the most updated, complete, streamlined, error free experience, go with Synergy or MikG.
I LOVE VaelPak, but there is a LOT of options, themeing, development, etc in there. It's definitely not for a beginner. Also, his newest release, which is based in GB is pretty awesome, but it's an AOSP Rom, which I'm not a fan of.
Hi all,
So this is really strange, I feel like I must just be missing something, but I finally pulled the trigger, did it all, flashed my first ROM (exciting!) and all seems to have gone smoothly, except that I cannot figure out how to access Titanium Backup?!? I thought it came with MikG (I decided to give that ROM a shot), but did not see it, so went to the Market and re-downloaded it, and it says downloaded, but I cannot click on "open" and it is nowhere to be found in the apps list, or anywhere for that matter. Help! What the heck is going on? Any thoughts?
Thanks much!
Did you have a notification saying "Titatium Backup Installed" or something like that? I've had the same problem in the Gingersense roms if I leave the market before the download AND installation is complete. Not every time but sometimes.
I was just being a little slow there, I had installed the key, but not the actual program. Oops So all good, got that working, but a couple quick more questions.
Sadly it seems that I did not have TB set to backup everything on a regular basis, looks like it was just set up to backup new apps and new versions (yikes!, I know). So I've been restoring some apps little by little, and when I restored Angry Birds I noticed I was stuck back on the first level and I was like, this isn't right, looked at the date, and last backup was like March/April. This is kind of a drag for some things, like that, and especially beyondPod, lost all my settings and a number of feeds there, but I think it's probably just something I'm going to have to live with, right? I of course made a nandroid right before I wiped and flashed, but it seems like even more of a hassle to go back to that nandroid, backup things to Titanium, then reflash MikG and restore everything again, rather than just recreating what I've lost, right? Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something, there's no other way around this.
Thanks for any assistance.
