Is there a free terminal app where special characters work as well? I tried the one from the market, but it didn't work.

I use terminal emulator by Jack Palavich(sp?)
EDIT: Only thing I have noticed is while using swype for some reason it won't go back to allow me to fix misspelled words. So, I have to use the stock keyboard instead. Just a heads up
That's the one I tried, but I couldn't figure out how to set the control key.there is no alt key etc on my key board. Any ideas?

For an app, I recommend ConnectBot since it can also do SSH.
As for the control key, look in the Market for "Full Keyboard". It's just what its name implies, but it's definitely not for day-to-day use outside of a shell (veritcal only, 2.1 AOSP keyboard based, cludgy).
Connectbot is nice, but I don't have any access to ctrl keys either - not even with full keyboard. Am I blind? I need to be able to control vi for example.
Any other ideas? Thanks again in advance!

Is this what you are talking about.... http://androidforums.com/motorola-droid/25956-ctrl-key.html
Sorry for the double post but I wanted to make sure it gets noticed.
While in terminal emulator hit menu>preferences there will be a setting "Control key". It allows you to choose your own control key.
EDIT: By default it looks like it is set to Jog ball.
There is a control key in Full Keyboard. Press the 123 key to see symbols and numbers, then press Dpad to see the editing keyboard, then press Ctrl to see the Alpha keyboard again, but this time, with ^ prefixed to each character (aka, each character is really Ctrl+*character*)
Thanks, but the four choices don't work for my keyboard. I guess I have to go with full key board then.

I'm using avalaunchs 2.2 sense ROM, and while I don't have a problem with sense itself I can't stand the keyboard. However all my attempts at installing the regular Android latinIME.apk have proved to be unsuccessful. Any advice?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Make sure you
enable in settings > Language & keyboard
then long press on a text box and select input method and select the keyboard
see that's the thing. the first time i tried i got the android keyboard option to show up in the L&K settings but it would just FC on me. Trying to install latinIME.apk from the phone itself just doesnt install.
Is this possible? I'm interested in the same but Google searches are coming up short. I ripped latinime.apk from the cm6 final ROM if you try to install it an error pops simply stating "Application not installed."
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
and you have tried other keyboards like the droid swipe or my favorite Smart keyboard ???

latinime.apk force closes on me too, as soon as the suggestion box pops up, it force closes

Sure I've used other keyboards. I'm using swype right now and have a soft spot for SwiftKey too. The default Android keyboard is awesome because it's just a keyboard. Nothing special. Like a typewriter lol
So I figured, why not try and see if it works on a Sense ROM.

I don't know if this can be done or has been done, but I would like to use different keyboards in different apps. For example in messing I want to use swipe and in there browser I want to use the droidx keyboard. Is this possible?

Install whichever keyboards you want, then when you wanna switch, long press on the text field and select input method, then select the keyboard you want accordingly.
I know I can manually switch, but I was looking for something more automatic. Thanks for your input though.
This morning I needed to search for a place on Maps starting with an S. But I can't do it! Each time I start a search pressing S, the keyboard disappears and leaves the maps full screen as if I have exited the search function. I also cannot search on Google because of the same problem. But I CAN search in Mail and it's okay!!! A weird one I know.
Help!!!!
This is a round about way of doing it, but.... Try inserting a letter before the s in the location. For example, H. So if you want to search for sacramento, enter Hsacramento, then move the cursor and delete the H and push enter/search.

Or you could use a different keyboard. Try SwiftKey from the Market, its awesome

Yes, that does seem a workaround - thanks. But I was really hoping someone might be able to explain why this is all of a sudden happening. I am using Swype. I have now discovered that if I use the keyboard that comes with Sense it is all okay so I assume this is now a Swype problem? I'll email them and let them know.
That's interesting, I use Swype too but have never had any issues. I'd say yeah let them know.

Perhaps you are using an old version of Swype? Always be sure to have the latest version of Swype!
Anyone have the samsung keyboard with workibg auti correct? Is very annoying that it won't fix misspelled words on its own.

You should be able to set the Q-Button to launch any app on the phone-native or downloaded.

This might not be ideal, but the first thing that comes to my mind is to use Tasker to make an app using the Autoshortcut plugin that allows you to select app activity shortcuts. Then you would just have your app factory created app run that shortcut upon "opening" that app. If you're not familiar with that, I could try to make one real quick if you let me know what shortcut you want to run.

Sure. Since it sounds like you already use Tasker (AutoVoice is a Tasker plugin, right?), you can simply export your AutoVoice task profile as an App. To do this, you need to also have the Tasker App Factory installed (free from the Play Store). Then, when you're in Tasker, long press on the profile icon (it needs to be an icon and not just a label) that has your AutoVoice tasks in it and select Export--> As App. You then need to give it some package name and where it says "Launch Task" you would select the task of your AutoVoice you want to run when the app "opens". Then, whenever you call on that app, it will perform that task. I think the next step is to add a signature or password to the .apk (I haven't done this in a while, but I think you just pick one when you set up the App Factory).
Let me know if you have any other questions. I really like Tasker and I think the App Factory just makes customizing your Android experience all that much more awesome. I admit that there are a lot of things I have yet to use to fully unleash the power of Tasker. There should be plenty of other ideas if you go to the Tasker forum. People there are usually quite friendly and willing to help.

You are quite welcome. Let me know if you run into any problems and I'll see what I can do.
Keep us posted if you get it to work! I think that route could open up a lot of other possibilities for that button, even if it is a little cumbersome to get setup.
