if you want FroYo and working wifi tether, I would highly recommend the TeamFenix 1.7.1. I have been using it since it came out, it is very stable. with me being a trucker i use the tether almost everyday. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749312
thanks, great info, are you also using gthe dopio kernel or as is?
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
am using the newest of the Dopio 806 kernels
i have tried both the regular release of wi-fi teather (2.0.1 I believe) as well as the pre build that has worked with all the other roms released for the slide, the one reference in the developers section. Both will install and run set-up the first time I open them, but as soon as I click to start tethering my phone reboots.
I do remember that I had to install a different SU from one of eugenes releases to get wi-fi tether working for one of the other roms....but for the life of me I can't remember how I installed just that SU without installing the whole rom. I'm not a developer or even a decently smart guy if you can't tell
Barnacle is an open source wifi tether app in the market that works on windows and Ubuntu. When you start the app, you'll need to hit menu>settings and then check "Skip wpa_supplicant" for it to work. It may take a couple of tries to get it to work. But it works.
Thanks to Hellraz0r for the suggestion in the CM6 thread!
I have not tried CM6 yet, but was having problems with stock.
I installed wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre6.apk and all is well for the stock android at least.
wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre8.apk will say no internet, but wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre6.apk connects just fine. Could be a similar thing with CM6?
Well barnacle connects I did wat yu said but still doesn't load up the web page see

It's working for me. But, like I said, it may take a couple tries. This does seem to be a pretty "finicky" app. For instance, I fired up Windows and tried to connect to barnacle and the pc said it failed to connect and barnacle disappeared from the list. I hit the "Associate" button in the app tried to connect again after it came back on the list, then it worked. I'm using it right now.
Maybe try turning off your firewall for a minute? Or make it a trusted network?
Edit: I just tested my bandwidth and got this:

While your netboook is scanning for network tap assosiate on barnacle to have phone resned signal, works everytime for me.
That's what I did but still no luck.
Before I flashed a rom it didn't work.
That's why I flashed cyanogenmod 6
Thinkn it wud work.
Maybe I rooted wrong?
Btw what rom has wifi tethering already.
Use barnacle, but check the skip 'wpa supplicant' box before trying to connect. I had cm6 and that worked for me.

Chiefz OTA 135 whatever. It's 2.1, but it has all you ask for.
You'll have to partition your SD with EXT, but yeah. Most all 2.1 roms work perfectly.
The latest cyanogen nightly has all of that too. There's no flash for our phones though no matter what ROM you use.

Yeah genius only work on stock. On cm6.1 it just opens a voice search. But the cpas/fn lights work in 6.1, they didn't in 6.0. CR_mod is probably the rom you're looking for. Its basically stock rom with the ota update and with root and wifi tether. I used it for a bit, was pretty fast, but sms was glitching for me, it was sending up to like 15 copies of each message, so I hopped back onto cyanogenmod.

Yea the only thing wrong with the CR_Mod though is that for some reason my wifi and wireless tether don't work and from what I've read they are supposed to work. Would installing a new kernel fix it? If so where do I get it from and how do I install it? Would it be just like a zip file/rom? Oh and it doesn't have apps2sd but I can partition my sd card once I get that other stuff working.

Worked fine for me, maybe you should try the newest version 2.0.5 pre13 the one that comes with CR_MOD is 2.0.2. There's also an app that was released that allows you to custom map the genius button (mines set for maps) Also, 2.0.5 pre13 works for CyanogenMod 6.1.

Unless you know how to edit the files necessary to boot properly using v4.0, I would use v3.5. All you lose is the last level, 864 mhz, you still get up to 844 mhz. I only set my max to 844 anyway, 864 was unstable for me. 3.5 boots just fine without editing files, way simpler. So yeah there you go haha

There is some info on editing the 00banner file in the thread if 4.0 is the one anyone wants to use. Just insert this into the file on it's own line (if yours says 'end' insert it before that).
Code:
echo 600000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq
change the 806400 to whatever frequency you want to boot up with. Then BEFORE YOU BOOT UP, go into recovery and do this
Code:
adb shell
su
cd \system\etc\init.d\
chmod 0750 /system/etc/init.d/00banner
I am looking for a way to disable authentication? This is easily done on an Evo... See this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838644
Calkulin has a hack for the Evo to disable it, anyone port this to the Epic?
Also maybe if someone could port the disable usb debugging icon even when enabled too?
If you are rooted and install one of the latest froyo roms like quantum 1.3 or 1.4

OR you can cancel your sprint wifi hotpot ($30/month savings) and just use wireless tether, which is free. Just sayin...

This is why I want the Sprint one and just disable the authntication as they have already done with the evo, downside is they have not got 4g to wifi working as 4g uses mac adress for authentication possibly.
I already have WiFi tether app that works with 3g and 4g but the mode is ad-hoc and certain things like xbox, ps3, psp need infrastructure mode. I would be happy if we could get as far as Evo and get and have working infrastructure 3g without authentication restriction.

do you pay for it? can you confirm it was sprint hotspot and not wifi tether
yeah i've been on quantum since 1.0, on 2.7 now and i dont think it works. it activates, lets you connect and "looks" like you have internet but activating the hotspot deactivates 3g for some reason. gives you the registration error.
that being said, i downloaded caulkins mod and will look into seeing if i can replicate it on the epic. i'm guessing i'll hit a roadblock as i'm sure people have tried this already, but we'll see!
looks like Caulkin is who made that MOD for the evo, i asked him on here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10382458#post10382458 if he could provide a how to as the same hack might work for us.
right now i'm just comparing a stock framework.jar with his mod. first delta i found is classes.dex/android/content/pm/registeredservicescache.smali but i dont know if that means anything yet, we'll see.

Agreed, the newest wifi tether actually launches sprint AP with authentication disabled. I've read that its a little buggy, but I used it yesterday for about 10 min browsing the web with no issue.
Using the newest tether (v3) has actually reset my phone, IE erased the data/factory reset. Kinda annoying.
How? No one ever gives instructions.
Is there a way to get a free hotspot or wifi tether on an UNROOTED Epic?
Thanks,

For free? The short answer is no. You can download the ap apps like wireless tether from the market, but without root permissions, the apps will not work. Some reason your hesitant to root your phone?
Requires a rooted phone.
Backup your phone with CWM3 as this app is still experimental and can cause issues.
Download pre10 or pre12 version 3.
Correctly install with ADB or a file/app manager.
Shutoff 4g and open app.
Select your device profile as Epic 4G
Start app and verify it successfully started (no errors, binaries installed etc.)
Don't worry when you see Sprint Hotspot activated message as this app uses something from the Sprint app
Start 4G
Supports infrastructure mode
Im on the virus rom (senseless) its amazing other than when I try using the sprint hotspots app that was suppose to be hacked to work. Now the only thing that works is the 3g not the 4g. I want to be able to use hotspots to connect my xbox360 to live.
Thank you in advanced.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
the stock sprint hotspot (yes, even hacked) can't be hacktivated to work on 4g. only 3g. for some reason 4g tethering is more complex and cant be hacked.
THE ALTERNATIVE: download android wifi tether (green wifi symbol) from the market. i use (or used when i was on sense) the stock sprint hotspot for 3g tethering and android wifi tether app when on 4g.
I use that aswell but I get these strange occurances where my phone stops sending data packets, then I have to re-start the wifi app. Is there a data governer that might be stopping my data transfers?

my bad. cm7 works on 3g and 4g. miui works on 3g.
You made me very happy for a second. I wish miui had 4g. Ill just re-install the android tether app.
Thank you very much.

I had this same problem... android wifi tether app wasn't working with CM7 RC2, and I couldn't get a connection to work in 4G using the built-in tethering... Turns out, it's a bit of a bug, not sure if it's an issue with Sprint, or with CM7, or what, but the fix was this:
Turn on 4G, start up my tether, and then open the browser on the phone, THEN connect to the hotspot. It's mildly annoying, but now works every time
Flashed the Synergy rom about a week ago and it runs smoothly aside from a couple of issues. The internet app crashes constantly so I dl'ed Mozilla instead. But the main issue is the Wifi Tether. The one built in reboots my phone every time and the Wireless Tether I had installed prior to this rom crashes every time I open it. A fix is highly necessary considering my only source of internet is through my phone. Thanks in advance!!!
This is not a rom issue but a app issue. Try contacting the dev of the app.
Fyi: ( taken from the syndicate files ) you must select epic4g in settings of wifi teather before procasting your signal. If your trying to teather with 4g you must connect with 3g then switch to 4g
