I am trying to install the RUU and then re-root per k electron's posted steps, but I am stuck. I have.successfully installed the RUU, but when I try to run the PB31IMG.zip from hboot, it says wrong image. I can verify it didn't work because 1, I can't use clockwork mod bc it says that I do not have superuser permission. And 2, when I go to recovery from hboot I have the red warning triangle indicating that I am stock. Any help please ??
Got it! Had to flash it twice

I was rooted fine with unrevoked forever. I wanted to try a rom than required me to install the newest version of hboot so I did that. Well I didnt like that rom so I tried to flash a nandroid restore but it didnt take. So I reinstalled the pc36img that I used when I rooted my phone. Then I rebooted my phone. Now it booted like its not rooted! I don't have superuser app and when I try to reboot into recovery I get a red triangle over a phone.
When I boot into hboot it says I have s-off but I have no idea how to get my phone back to the way it was.
Under system info it says I have firmware version 2.1-update1 but I try to look for a froyo update and it says there are none available.
I was going to just unroot with the s-on tool but that requires going into recovery which I can't do.
What do I do?
Please help me get my root back!!!!
Try flashing this PC36IMG. That should bring you up to the latest rooted OTA, radios, hboot, and it will flash clockwork for your recovery.
Will that cause me to loose s-off root? Will I be able to re-root with the simple root method?
I want to be rooted I just screwed something up and need to fix it
Nope, it's already rooted. You will be rooted stock, off the new OTA with S-OFF.

Ummmmm... That file in that link had a trojan virus in it. Thanks!
You're joking right?
Just so you know, that was a rhetorical question.
There's no trojan in that file. Download it or don't, that's on you. I am only trying to help.
I did download that file and my antivirus said a trojan virus was detected. I'm very serious. I will try again and see if I get the same results
I downloaded it again and no virus this time, Weird. Anyways when I flash this I get Boot Fail-pu so I flashed it again and got the same result. Any idea why it would do this?
I think its fixed. I reflashed my rom and now I have superuser again and I just used rom manager to flash ra recovery. Thanks for the help!!!

I got the exact same error. It flashed everything but the Boot failed. I restarted and it kept bringing me to the clockwork recovery instead of booting up. It said E: Invalid Argument. I wiped everything and did another restore and got the same error. I did it again and my recovery worked
I would press my luck and try to flash the de-ox rom over this but from the last 3 days, I'll probably get a boot loop again -_-
I tried a manual install using "[Guide] How to apply the new OTA 3.29.651.5 when you have clockwork and s-off" (posted there too)
After the update, I'm stuck in HBOOT and can't start the phone at all.
Booting into recovery gives me a red exclamation. Doing up+volume, starts the stock recovery. It shows the error "E:can't open/cache/recovery/command"
I tried updating to a stock rom or a custom recovery (renaming each one to update.zip) but all of them fail the signature verification. I do have the "show known file type extensions" option set to visible, so I don't think it's the update.zip.zip problem I saw here.
Phone was rooted.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm phoneless

What H-Boot version do you have? I would try going here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=791019 and downloading the PC36IMG.zip file posted, rename it to PC36IMG.zip (make sure that if you hide file extensions in Windows, you don't have .zip on 2x) put it on the root of your SD card, go into bootloader...it will detect the file and when it asks you if you want to run the update, do it and it will update your system. Should fix you right up!
Thanks for the help! I actually just figured it out myself. I renamed the file I tried initially on the OP of the thread I mentioned and renamed that to update.zip. Updated in the stock recovery and it worked from there. Unrevoked still worked after (though S-Off didn't)
I tried the way you mentioned before, but it told me "old version." and wouldn't go through. I have hboot 0.97 now, which is probably the cause of the problem, plus S-ON, which I thought was OFF before.
I think I have killed my phone. I used the unrevoked method to root my phone and thats as far as the customizing went. I tried to remove it and now my phone will show the first evo screen and then go to a triange/exclamation screen! I have tried to load a new RUU, applying a update.zip, using the pc39img flash. and nothing works. Can someone throw me a bone and help me out. Also I tried to recover from a backup, didnt work. and if recovery is selected it goes to the red triangle screen with a E: cant open/cache/recovery message.
Sorry if this is info overload just trying to give info so i avoid goiong down the wrong path.
EVO
You've already went down the wrong path, this is Development, not questions.
but you deleted your recovery img
ok so heres how u should be able to get out of that screen
a. install 3.30.651.1 ruu (only if u cant boot into ur rom )
b. if everythings cool booting into rom and its just recovery follow these directions and it will work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
hope this helps
also if none of that works try downloading recovery img and flash it
good lu
ok so here what u can try
a. try to install 3.30.651.1 ruu (only if u cant boot up)
b. if u can boot up fine then follow this link if u only have a broken recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
and if that still doesent work to downloading the recovery.img and flash it adb
hope this helps
I just tried rooting my phone using the Universal Auto Root tool from this thread. It went through steps 1-8 ok, but on the screen with the red triangle & exclamation point, the script timed out and installation failed.
My phone doesn't start up now (just hangs on white EVO splash screen), and I can't seem to find the right option in the recovery menu to start over. When I try running the AutoRoot script again, it says ERROR Misc partition did not flash correctly, and gives me the message about flashing RUU through fastboot.
Can anyone help?
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip
Download, rename to PC36IMG, then flash in bootloader. Its an RUU of the 3.70 stock.
Did it say anything about adb errors? Most of the time if it fails it is because the drivers didn't install correctly our something interfered with it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I'll run through a history:
- Rooted my phone to S-OFF and installed a custom ROM
- Installed another custom ROM after running a 'super wipe' script
- Decided I wanted to go back, tried to get to clockworkmod recovery but I couldn't get to hboot
- Tried to re-root, got halfway and it failed. I could now get to hboot but when I get to clockworkmod recovery it shows an error logo with a danger triangle sign. When I try to boot it just stays on the HTC logo.
- The first time I tried to load Clockworkmod it said it couldn't access some /cache/ directory and now it just shows the warning icon with no error message.
I think I need to reinstall Clockworkmod, then use that to reinstall a ROM. I heard it's possible to do this by flashing a zip file from the SDcard and loading hboot. How can I do this?
Thanks!

That red triangle is HTC's recovery mode. You should manage to get root via one click root and then flash clockwork normally. In the app.
Thanks. What exactly is one click root? Have googled it but not sure which it is.
I think you might mean this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
But that seems to require that I can boot into a ROM in the first place? I can't get past the HTC logo at all.

No that is S-OFF. You need S-OFF if you want to flash custom rom. This is what I meant http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Thanks again. Just to clarify, on hboot it tells me it's 'S-OFF' at the top of the screen. I should run the one click utility anyway, right?
I don't think superone click works on dhd but I could be wrong. Haven't read up on it in a long time.
But back to original question on hand. I made a guide in the general section for this exact issue. It titled stuck in hboot. Their I have a link for cwr in a pd98 format(flashable through hboot).
It should work for you. I did notice that the modelid in the txt is different but was told it should work for dhd with no modification but I have not confirmed as I have an inspire. If it doesn't work let me know and ill make the change quickly and uplaod a new one. Its a simple change. If you want to can try. Simply change the model I'd to pd98100000 from pd9812000
Thank you, I will try that now.
...And it worked! Thanks all

I have a similar problem. I tried to flash a galaxy rom on to my htc evo 4g and now my phone wont boot up. I actually need instructions on how to do this. When I try to flash recovery it goes into HBOOT and also goes into bootloader. But when I try recovery it goes to the white HTC Evo 4g screen and immediately goes back to Hboot. Iv tried to download a clockworkmod custom recovery img and flash it as a PC36IMG zip. It finds the zip and says parsing PC36IMG but doesn't ask if I want to flash it and goes back into bootloader. I renamed the recovery image "Recovery" and the Zip "PC36IMG" as instructed from a different website. I can ONLY use this method because my micro port is broken.
Also when I downloaded the recovery image there were two choices. Recovery image and recovery touch image. We should I go with?

I tell you how to over come this:
1) Throw your phone into the trash can
2) Buy a new one
3) Come back to xda
4) Read all the tutorials once again
5) Read them again
6) Re-read them
7) Now do whatever you want.
This method works perfectly for any noob...

Sorry but what are you talking about an EVO 4g in the DHD forums??...BTW, in the zip file you need a .txt file to be able to be flashed. If that file is missing then the hboot will never detect the .zip file.
Besides, if you have an unlocked bootloader you won't be able to flash recovery in that way. You can do it using fastboot flash commands...
