Restore htc evo to factory after root

Ok, I really want to root my Evo and install a custom ROM but Im PETRIFIED!
I use to have a motorola droid that no matter what I did to the phone I could (even if it was bricked) restore it with an application made by Motorola. Because of this I had no problem playing around with Roms because I could always "fix" the phone if needed.
So my question is, is there a program that does the same thing for the EVO, where I can restore and unbrick the phone?
Also, can you recommend any custom ROMs to use? Preferably 2.2 if every thing works camera,wifi, bluetooth,4g etc...

To unroot you need to run the HTC RUU (ROM update utility) You just your phone into your PC and run the EXE. If you have questions about it look at this post.

On to ROMs the 2.2 ROM's are moving along pretty well, but they are not 100% as far as I know. As to what to recommend that is all on what you like. Look in the Dev section and find you one like and read about it.

Ok, so I can un-root with the RUU utility but will it work if I updated with the recent OTA update?also, if I instal a custom rom will it restore it?

I personally have not ran the RUU, but people have unrooted even with the latest OTA. I believe
I guess I am not understanding what you mean by if you install a custom ROM will it restore it... If you run the RUU it will put you back to a completely stock state even if you are using a custom ROM. Not sure if that was the question but it was an answer

Yes, there is a way to use the RUU to get you back to complete stock.
You will be fine during the whole process as long as you follow directions, and don't do anything crazy (for example, never do a battery pull in the middle of flashing).
It's fun, you know you want to do it. lol
And also, with the custom recovery, there is a way to restore backups you make along the way

[Q] Evo 4g Root Questions

Hi im new to this forum, I just have a few questions about "rooting" and its process for the HTC EVO 4G on a froyo 2.2 update. I already have a decent amount of knowledge about rooting and all the different types of hacks possible for this phone. I have been reading countless pages and looking at other forums and articles from the official android forums. I was just wondering if you guys could help me with a few of these questions:
1. Before I root, is there anything I need to do? Besides backing up my contacts, apps, etc. do I need to back up my system? What if the root fails? what can i do to go back to stock form? ( I am currently running 2.2 android)
2. Now i know dan wager released a thread on how to root 2.2 but im not sure which method I am supposed to use. I have been reading that using the unrevoked method causes a lot of problems but all of these methods are using unrevoked..... (confused). Which method should I use from the following that would be the best?
(since i cant post urls)
The newest unrevoked method 3.21 (fairly easy) or the difficult one by Dan wager having to go back to 2.1?

Helo All,
So I have a locked Desire Z from Bell, and I am with Bell. I dont really feel a need to change the Rom on my phone as I have no issues with it and am pretty happy with it.
My main thing that I would like to do though is remove the bloatware that Bell installed. Such as demos to games I care nothing about and also seem to find themself running in my Advanced Task Manager despite me never using them.
So I know that I can root the phone and uninstall them which is my main goal, I have been looking around and see multiple methods for rooting, with S-Off and such, so I was looking to see I truely need to go about it that way or should I just obtain root leave S-On and all that other jazz and just uninstall them.
So I welcome suggestions on how I can go about rooting my phone for my needs.

There are two methods of rooting. The first uses an app called Visionary to root, and the second uses a program called rage. There are guides on how to use both of these on this forum.
I recommend you look at this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857390
That guide shows you how to root with Visionary (though you can substitute the rage method), and then to get S-OFF with gfree. The relatively "new" method of using gfree is very safe to use, and getting S-OFF will open up a lot more options to you than just root, e.g. the ability to flash custom recovery (so you can do a Nandroid backup of your phone) and to flash custom ROMs.
It's possible to undo all of this stuff should you ever need to do a warranty return. Although if you're going to flash a custom ROM, make sure you either have an RUU/ROM image for your stock ROM, or a Nandroid backup of your stock ROM to restore (because there aren't RUUs/ROM images available yet for all stock ROMs).

Hi I'm currently running stock android 2.2.1 (build 1.72.405.3) on an unbranded DHD in the UK (I'm on Orange if that matters) I'm getting frustrated with the wait for 2.3 to be released here so I want to install the official RUU that was released a little while back.
I understand that to do this my phone will still be "official" ish, and that the only real difference between this way and OTA is that I'll lose my apps etc. which I can handle.
I want to be able to try some custom roms (in the future) but then be able to return the phone to stock - I believe this is possible? Am I better off downgrading now and doing S-off / eng-off, clockwork recovery, root etc? Or will I be fine to downgrade from 2.3 to 1.32 in the future to do everything I'll need for custom ROMS?
Or am I a muppet and have things totally wrong?

Simple answer: Do it NOW!!!
Yes you can always go back to stock.
Much easier to do everything now.
Even if you only do root and S-OFF, you will be protected should the OTA update arrive in the sense that you won't need to downgrade again. But in for a penny and all that, go for the lot now and start exploring the greatness of Android and Sense (if you like that).

not neccesary you are going to lose your apk´s...
you can install "titanium backup" and do a backup of your apk´s, your system and your data (dialer, missed calls, wifi passwords...on sd-card\titaniumbackup) and then when you has installed your new gingerbread rom you can restore it.
download it from android market..
and finally say to you step by step what should to do:
1ºDOWNGRADE proccess from 1.72xx to 1.32xx wee off. ru
2ºroot with visionary Rxx
3º s-off eng-off+SUPERCID
4ºinstall ROM MANAGER from market and then flash a CWM recovery (lastest)
5ºDOWNLOAD the gingerbread rom, copy, paste to sd card root,
6ºDO FULL WIPE in recovery (factory reset, data, dalvik)
7ºFLASH the new rom and ENJOY

You can do anything, anywhere, and anyhow on your Desire HD (But make sure you know what you are doing. Lol.) It all depends on your risk appetite.

only follow the guides, it sounds more difficult than it is.

Thanks for all the speedy replies! I read them last week, but have only now have the time to reply.
I did it! I downgraded to 1.36 (?) then ran the tool on my pc to do radio S-off then also ran the other tool to Eng S-off - I followed jkoljo's posts (from the sticky roll-up thread over on the development forum). I've now installed the official 2.3. It was a little scary at times, but easy as pie!
The only issue I had was that I don't think I backed up my apps correctly (I used Astro file browser to do it) as they have not all been restored, however this is no great pain!
I'm now thinking that I might try installing a custom ROM, maybe Leedroid? I'm after something that is like the stock rom - i.e. Sense based (at least to start with) but has more bells and whistles - any suggestions are welcome!

[Q] Questions about rooting

Since I got my HTC wildfire late last year I've been following these forums and reading up on android terminology. Thanks to all those who warned me not to update my phone, I was so close to doing so however I believe that these can be rooted now. I've finally got annoyed with the shortage of memory on eclair and now that I have a bit more time over the summer I want to root it and so I have a few questions.
1) I know that to "unroot" I need to use an RUU. Looking on shipped roms, I can't see a vodafone uk eclair RUU, so which one would I use?
2) After creating a gold card, will you be able to use the sd card as normal (ie to store music, videos, photos, apps etc)
3) Looking around, there are many different recoveries in the development forum, I know that unevoked already comes with a recovery but should I use that one or another?
4) Has the switched off chargeing problem been fixed in clockwork recovery?
5) After rooting, I plan to install CM7. Does everything thing work properly in CM? (I ask this because a while back (before CM7) I read that that camara didn't work as well as stock and that the FM radio didn't work at all)
6) I know that there is official froyo apps 2 sd but I've seen other unofficial ones around. What are the differences between all of these and which one should I use?
7) I know that CM7 is a non-sense rom, I don't think I'll miss much of sense except the clock/weather widget. Is there anything available that is exactly like the htc clock/weather widget?
8) I know there are different radios around, will I need to update mine?

2)yes you will be able to, the gold card only changed the hexcode inbiult, so you should be able to store things on the sd card
3)clockmod is the way to go for me, i had a htc desire and it worked brilliant for me.
4)if you dont want to use that version of clock mod you can also use a previous version which will do the same thing.
5)and when you install and download CM7, make sure you download the specific version form the websute for your device.
6)it doesnt really mater, its just moving the apps to the sd card form the phone, this is done by rooting it and gaining root acess.
7)an widget app similar to that is beautiful widgets ( i think you need to pay fro it but get it form 4shared or somewhere else) but they have most htc widgets, and MAYBE there might be ports in the future or have been done already.
8)it is recomended to upgrade your radio when you do your first root.
all information and downloads should be able to be downloaded i nthe index page of the forum

1) You are on Eclair, in which case you can only go with Unrevoked. No other alternative, so, there are no issues there.
4) There are essentially two versions - 2.x and 3.x, and, honestly, you will want to keep both, because 2.x supports flashing of Radios and Froyo ROMs, and 3.x supports flashing Gingerbread ROMs. What you can do is when using Unrevoked, Select Custom Recovery Image, and Point it to a 3.x Recovery File. This way, your primary Recovery will be 3.x. Then, download ROM Manager from the Market, Select Install Clockworkmod Recovery from within that app, and it will install 2.x on your SDCard (Secondary Recovery). So, essentially, you have both.
8) Radio flashing is not risky per se, but, you have got to be careful and follow basics like not interrupting the process, making sure you have sufficient battery charge etc. because, mistakes here can brick your phone. You cant "undo" it but you can flash your old radio version again.
- Goldcard is only needed when flashing an RUU. If you are simply rooting using Unrevoked and installing Custom ROMs, you dont need one.
lastly, make sure you use an old version of Unrevoked, (3.14 upto 3.21), not the latest.

hi. i just got a htc wildfire and i want to install cyanogen mod. I already rooted my phone using alpharevX and got the S-OFF message. But when i install ROM manager and tried to install CN7 i got the message " An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands". Is there something wrong or something that i missed?

S-OFF =/= rooting.

The newer version actually lowers compatibility with the Wildfire, rather than raising it. You are bound to get some error or other, unless extremely lucky. (And the most common one would be "Firmware too new?" error).
Just try searching the Wildfire Forum for links. Many have uploaded 3.14, but unfortunately, the posts are all scattered somewhere.

Yes, you can. Although I am still sticking with 3.1.0.2, because of two reasons - laziness and a few reports by users which suggest some problems with 4.x. Compatibility between 3.x and 4.x is the same though - ie. you can only install Gingerbread ROMs on them.
Also, personally, I prefer flashing ROMs through Recovery, rather than ROM Manager.

If you are S-OFF, you can stay on CWM 3 and use the PC49IMG.zip file to flash a radio. Simply put inside the android-info.txt from a RUU and the radio.img you want to flash, then reboot under HBOOT.
