Hi im new to this forum, I just have a few questions about "rooting" and its process for the HTC EVO 4G on a froyo 2.2 update. I already have a decent amount of knowledge about rooting and all the different types of hacks possible for this phone. I have been reading countless pages and looking at other forums and articles from the official android forums. I was just wondering if you guys could help me with a few of these questions:
1. Before I root, is there anything I need to do? Besides backing up my contacts, apps, etc. do I need to back up my system? What if the root fails? what can i do to go back to stock form? ( I am currently running 2.2 android)
2. Now i know dan wager released a thread on how to root 2.2 but im not sure which method I am supposed to use. I have been reading that using the unrevoked method causes a lot of problems but all of these methods are using unrevoked..... (confused). Which method should I use from the following that would be the best?
(since i cant post urls)
The newest unrevoked method 3.21 (fairly easy) or the difficult one by Dan wager having to go back to 2.1?
-
3. After I root, what is a Nandroid backup and how do I perform that? Can someone walk me through after Just completing root?

First of all thanks specifically to the four people mentioned below, amon ra, and also to everyone on this forum and the forum team. I am really becoming edumacated, but still have a long way to go.
This is a question for netarchy, toast, whitslack, and/or l33t or anybody.
BACKGROUND:
Bought 2 evo’s. 1 for me and 1 for my wife. Computer is an Imac.
Rooted my evo using netarchy’s “the easiest 1.47.651.1 root+nand unlock you’ll ever see without a gui (updated)” thread 741294. It is easy.
Followed that up with whitslack’s “starting over method” thread 715915.
Now running netarchy’s odexed 2.2 with 4.0.3a kernel with pri 1.40. (what a pain to get it updated to 1.40 but I bagged it).
Everything is running great for me. All directions and instructions were perfect and worked as advertised. EASY PEASY. (except bagging the 1.40 pri of course).
CURRENT GOAL:
Now I want to root my wife’s phone. I am not running a more current kernel yet because I have been reading my butt off to find a method to not downgrade her pri to 1.34. I can’t wait to try a newer kernel, but that will have to wait.
I found many threads with references to modified pc36img.zip images without the rcdata included in them to root without downgrading the pri to 1.34. None of them really definitively answers whether or not the process works completely. Most of the threads end in dead ends because of a signed file problem loading modified PC36IMG.ZIP files.
QUESTIONS:
Since rooting was so easy before, I would like to use the same method’s on my wife’s phone. She is still at 1.47 (been holding off all updates OTA). So, since netarchy’s method utilize’s Toast’s PC36IMG.ZIP which downgrade’s the pri to 1.34, I have the following questions:
1) Is it possible to run unrevoked forever to turn s-off on my wife’s phone (still on 1.47 or 2.1), then complete step 2 below and use the unrevoked tool to turn s-on back on and still have my wife’s phone still rooted and nand unlocked via netarchy’s procedures? I think that this would allow me to complete step 2 below without the problems of a signed PC36IMG.ZIP mentioned in l33t’s thread wip update pri to 1.40. I would like to not leave s-off because I would be the one to brick her phone through my fat fingered mistakes. I would like to use this tool only to get her phone exactly to where mine is in the easiest fashion possible.
2) - Could I follow Netarchy’s procedure (after unrevoked forever) as before, but substitute l33t’s PC36IMG.ZIP (from l33t’s WIP update pri 1.40 thread - I think he removed the rcdata from it) for Toast’s PC36IMG.ZIP and achieve the exact same results as before except the pri will remain at 1.40? Thus I would achieve root and nand unlock with the 1.40 pri.
3) When following Whitslack method, does Whitslack’s PC36IMG.ZIP also downgrade the PRI to 1.34 or not? I am not sure of, or if there is any difference in his file versus Toast’s. I believe differences do exist, I just do not know exactly what they are.
4) If Whitslack’s PC36IMG.ZIP file does downgrade the pri to 1.34, is there an alternative file to use in his method to not downgrade the PRI to 1.34 , or is l33t’s PC36IMG.ZIP file OK to use with Whitslack’s method also? Should the s-on tool be utilized after Whitlack’s method using l33t’s PC36IMG.zip?
5) After whitslack’s method should I then reload the new amon ra recovery tool since I think his method loads amon ra 1.7.0.1
6) After reading, I am totally confused regarding backups. I love my nandroids now that I am rooted (a full backup tool should be standard from HTC and Sprint from the get go). I also now read that a new Amon-RA recovery exists. I believe I read that it now has the ability to select specific portions of a backup to restore. Please correct me if I am wrong and this may be my answer. So my question is where or how would I be able to backup my wife’s current contacts with custom ringtones and people’s pictures in favorites and her calendar before rooting -before all the data for these gets wiped before rooting (maybe not possible)? Does the google sync do all of this (after reading I don’t think it does)? This is the main concern for an easy root for her evo. We don’t care about sms, mms, emails nor homescreens (the homescreens are relatively easy to re setup – just some finger pushing). I know I can use a file manager (like ASTRO and Appbrain) for apps and apps data, and Titanium backup after rooting (but I don’t get how to restore on Titanium or what to restore – I played with it on my evo with no success except for apps). Yes I am dumb and I also believe her data would be wiped by this point anyways.
7) If I substitute the new Amon ra recovery 1.80 in part two of Netarchy’s root procedure, would that be sufficient to save her data and then selectively restore what is needed? Or would this be too late to save her contacts, custom ringtones, people pictures, favorites, and calendar?
8) Do I even need to do Whitlack’s method, because I would immediately be loading Netarchy’s 2.2 odexed rom. Could I just after using Netarchy’s root and nand unlock procedure (with the l33t’s PC36IMG.ZIP and the new Amon ra recovery 1.80, immediately proceed to flashing Netarchy’s 2.2 odexed 2.2 rom and be done because his 2.2 load procedure includes radio and wimax updates?
9) If it is possible to use unrevoked forever (s-off) and the new s-on tool, do I have the correct sequence of their uses in order? Or am I mixing apples and oranges methods and it just won’t work?
10) Is there a better procedure (and what is it) to do what I want? If I have to bite the bullet and just manually reload everything just let me know and I will go about it that way.
I know a few other people have kind of the same questions, so maybe this can be a way to help others with the same questions get the answers. Us noobs are always looking to take short cuts and think we understand when we really don't know nothing.
Thank you for all of your efforts prior to this. You people are geniuses.
Sorry for the length of this. I do not not totally understanding everything after reading for weeks and thanks for any response in advance. I really tried to understand before asking these questions. If I should have known better, then please blast away at me for not finding the answers already and I apologize before hand for wasting everyone's valuable time.
great answers
Thanks sooo much
You only asked FOUR people out of this entire forum a question. What exactly did you expect?
I'd help you but I'm not on the list...

Hi Guys,
So I rooted my stock Incredible a few months back using Unrevoked and nandroid backup, and I know 2.2 just finally came out officially.
I've been keeping up with the forums but having a great deal of time figuring out how to upgrade to 2.2 with root. I actually received the notification from my phone that the update was out -- so I downloaded the update via my phone, and while it was trying to upgrade, the phone locked up -- then the update got lost after that and it says my phone is up to date yet I don't have 720p video recording.
I guess my main hurdle is overcoming all these technical speak -- upgrading radio? adb? recovery? kernel? All I want is to do the necessary minimum in order to upgrade from my rooted 2.1 to rooted 2.2.
Would someone please be kind enough to lend a hand? I've looked through "HTC DROID INCREDIBLE helpful/popular threads [LOOK HERE FIRST]" and other threads, but just get lost in the jargon.
Thanks!
These are some instructions I used to do what you want to do. I also added my comments on how I did it later in the posting. Thanks to Heathsrow for his help.

Updating the radio was the scariest part for me cause done wrong and it could brick your phone. Follow the steps slowly and precisely and it should be fine though.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Are you referring to the post by Heathsrow? But those are instructions to go from a Stock 2.1 to rooted 2.2..
I have a rooted 2.1 already. Will it matter?
This is the guide I started checking out last night. Thinking of doing it today!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771178
Make sure you apply s-off before installing 2.2, either the OTA or the RUU otherwise you will not be able to root it without downgrading back to 2.1.

Just wanted to say I followed this guide instead
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760306
It's a lot easier. if you're already rooted on 2.1 start on step 9.
You can download unrevoked-forever at the top of the guide and the 2.15 radio.
Just make sure you follow the guide exactly and read the warnings about updating the radio.
Helo All,
So I have a locked Desire Z from Bell, and I am with Bell. I dont really feel a need to change the Rom on my phone as I have no issues with it and am pretty happy with it.
My main thing that I would like to do though is remove the bloatware that Bell installed. Such as demos to games I care nothing about and also seem to find themself running in my Advanced Task Manager despite me never using them.
So I know that I can root the phone and uninstall them which is my main goal, I have been looking around and see multiple methods for rooting, with S-Off and such, so I was looking to see I truely need to go about it that way or should I just obtain root leave S-On and all that other jazz and just uninstall them.
So I welcome suggestions on how I can go about rooting my phone for my needs.
Thanks
I put together this guide that I pieced from this forum. Tried to make it really user friendly. I have the Bell Desire Z too.

Nice guide, Will this work for European DZ also?
There are two methods of rooting. The first uses an app called Visionary to root, and the second uses a program called rage. There are guides on how to use both of these on this forum.
I recommend you look at this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857390
That guide shows you how to root with Visionary (though you can substitute the rage method), and then to get S-OFF with gfree. The relatively "new" method of using gfree is very safe to use, and getting S-OFF will open up a lot more options to you than just root, e.g. the ability to flash custom recovery (so you can do a Nandroid backup of your phone) and to flash custom ROMs.
It's possible to undo all of this stuff should you ever need to do a warranty return. Although if you're going to flash a custom ROM, make sure you either have an RUU/ROM image for your stock ROM, or a Nandroid backup of your stock ROM to restore (because there aren't RUUs/ROM images available yet for all stock ROMs).
I have read multiple guides around the internet about rooting my HTC Desire Z. Hutchinson 3UK network. I am unsure on what method to use, how to downgrade etc.
I do not want to run a risk of rooting my phone as I bought it outright for £300. I also want to know if I can unroot and perm-root.
The reason I want to root is to overclock it, is it possile to use 2.2 firmware on a root?
Could you please post or link a guide that will provide all of the information I need and that is fairly simple to understand as I am new to the whole Android/rooting business.
Many thanks.
My Android version is 2.2.1 and am hoping to use this version as I love sense but only want a root on this to overclock.
My baseband version is 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2
Build number and software number is 1.72.405.2
With a 1.72 ROM you will need to downgrade before you can Root.
The instructions in the Wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Introduction) include links to the downgrade instructions.
The recommended root method uses GFREE which will SIM-Unlock the phone while you are rooting.
Yes you can unroot, the instructions for that are in the Wiki as well.
You can absolutely use a 2.2 ROM while rooted, if you are only looking to overclock you can just install an overclock friendly kernel after you are rooted, though you may want to look at a custom ROM because you will have to wipe when you downgrade from 1.72.
Good luck!
Ok, is unrooting a simple process because I am covered on warranty and do not to want to simply lose it, I need a backup. My phone is already unlocked so that is fine there.
How long does the rooting take? Because it all looks very confusing entering the code etc, am I likely to mess anything up which results in a brick?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
The process of rooting via wiki method took me about 15 minutes, but the setup of adb and installing drivers will add additional time if you are unfamiliar with it. Usually if you enter in a wrong character in adb, the command won't go through (incorrect paths, etc), but just be careful and you will be fine. Read each step carefully.
Unrooting was a little difficult for me (I did this first to send my first G2 in for warranty) as that was my first experience tying my phone to the pc, but it is very simple and straightforward with the instructions.
Yeah i did rooting with the wiki but sometimes you'll get confused on how to do it. If u dont understand ask here or search the internet. Always happy to help ^_^!
Downgrading
It says check your INFOCID. How do I perform this check?
Sorry for not knowing anything..
the link I am asking about is provided by the wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
First of all thanks in advance for help from all you lovely people.
I'm something of a semi-noob when it comes to Android phones, though I have a fair amount of experience with Windows Mobile HTC devices.
I've had a couple of Android tablets some cheap unbranded chinese crap and and an Advent Vega, both of which I succesfully rooted via different methods.
So I have a little (though I stress a little) familiarity with ADB and clockworkmod recovery.
I'd appreciate if someone could help me understand a few things about the Desire Z though. I have a Desire Z sold retail, with no network lock, with CID HTC__001.
1. If I root this device ( probably via this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1055581 ) would I be able to update to official ROMs in the future or does this always become difficult/impossible after rooting?
2. If i take a Nandroid backup immediately after rooting. Then later restore this backup and follow the guide I have seen for "unrooting" the device, would I then effectively be back to stock (or as close as possible)? If so should official OTA updates work again after this?
3. If 2 is wrong (which it could be since I am a noob!), is there anyway to get back to stock (or close enough for warranty returns/OTA updates) after rooting.
Again thanks for the help from all you knowledgable folk.
1) Rooting (and gfree) doesn't limit the ROMs you can flash, it completely opens it up. Running gfree gives you SuperCID and S-Off, so you can flash any ROM intended for our phone, regardless of what CID the ROM is intended for. But if you flash an official ROM, you will lose root again. Most ROMs have pre-rooted, but otherwise untouched (or at least, minimally modified) versions posted in the Development section. Once you are rooted, you should stick to those.
2 & 3) There are step-by-step instruction on how to unroot and return to stock in the Wiki: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Returning_to_Stock
Perfect! Thanks for the help.
There's so many warnings and "I'm not reponsible if flashing this ends the world" type lines in the guides and rom threads, that it can make you quite unsure as to what the potential problems are even if you have a little experience.
