I'm trying to run wireless tether (http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/) on a Droid Incredible which has been updated to stock 2.2 and then rooted. I'm running wireless tether 2.0.5 pre 9 and everyting seems to work and I can connect to the phone from my laptop (running Win XP), but then I can maybe sometimes load a single web page and then I get timed out connections. It seems that DNS resolution is working as I get answers from nslookup in a command window.
Is anyone else having problems getting wireless tethering working? The web pages I've found on the subject seem to be from before Froyo came to the Dinc, even the Google project page doesn't mention 2.2.

Have not tried Wireless Tether with 2.2 since I can use the 3G Wirelecc Hotspot that comes with 2.2. All you need to do is this:
1. On your phone, bring up the dialer and dial ##778. This will load EPST.
2. Select EDIT.
3. Enter 000000 for the password.
4. Select SECURITY.
5. Select the username that has [email protected].
6. Edit the username to read [email protected] (delete "dun.").
7. Click the back button to return to the list.
8. Select M.IP DEFAULT PROFILE.
9. Repeat steps 5 and 6.
10. Click on MENU and select COMMIT.
You will not be charged for its use.
Thanks, I just tried that and got it working, but I thought that using the Google code was a little safer that it would never be accidentally switched back to paid mode.
I also noticed that when I tried to change the ssid or password that whenever I left the config screen and came back they were back to default values. Have you been able to change the 3g hotspot ssid/password?

Yu have to have a computer link first and then it will keep the settings. Do not know why they set it up this way.
Thanks, got it changed now - in fact I'm using that connection now.
Does this mean the wireless tether project is totally obsolete?

No, for those who do not have 2.2 yet, it is still an option (and a good one). Some people just like using it over the 3g Wireless Hotspot. I have used both and prefer the 3G Wireless Hotspot. I have no issues with it and get easy connects.
Is the equivalent procedure for the Droid X known yet? I've got a friend who just got his X updated to Froyo.

I do not know. Do a search for ESPT for the Droid X and see if it has a simular setup. If it does, the same changes should work for it.
Any updates on this? I'm on a rooted 2.2 incredible and wifi tether will not play with my ipad. Based upon what I've read, the issue surrounds the fact that the mac address refreshes on the app while the ipad does not like this and most ad hoc connections. I've heard that activaiton hack for the stock mobile wifi is no longer valid. Anyone else tethering?
Thanks,
Tremont
The stock 3g hack still works also wireless tether pre15 works perfect for me

How do I get 3g hot spot app on my phone.

3g Hot spot
I just got my DINC and installed PDAnet to thether and have found that the hotspot works, but doesn`t allow me to go to secure sites, when I do this it brings up the Verizon page for subscribing for $20. I have done nothing other than install
PDAnet( the free version).
Zexel, follow the instructions on comment #2 of this thread and you'll be all better.
Just a random question. I am using the wireless tether app, with the access control enabled. I notice, that there is another connection always asking for permission. The mac address is 00:00:48:"somethin", and the name of the computer is "*". All it is is *. Any idea what this can be? it certainly isnt any of my computers.
Is it always there when your in the same spot or everywhere you go?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Most likely someone else trying to get on; they have to have permission before they get data.
I havent tried it in other spots, I am currently using it for my internet until my cable company arrives to install broadband. (yeah, sorry, im hogging the network, but I have no choice for now). The few other places I have tried it at, it doesnt come up. It only comes up every now and then. But yeah, I have only noticed it at my place. And it randomly shows up.
Yea, but don't they have to have the wpa passphrase to get connected in the first place?
Yea they need code to be connected. Don't trust anything you don't know. It's a risk. Imo

have you tried making your EVO 4G forget unsecured networks first? or are there a network mangement software running background?

but it does connect, just not when secured, that makes me think its not a rom problem, but then again I dont know. anything is possible with electronics
Go to Linksys website and update firmware in router

If other devices can connect except for your Evo with encryption enabled, then it's not your router. I'm on CM7.1 (not RC1) and it works with my wifi and I have a wrt54gs. If you flashed a kernel, then I would try another one. Worst case, download the ROM again and setup your wireless and verify that it works.

I had a similar issue the last time I changed from CM-7 to EVOLvedROM...I could not manually connect to my secured router. I would actually have to log into the router and run WPS "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" via PBC "Push Button Configuration". During the PBC was the only time the phone would connect to the router. I tried everything I could think of. I finally reflashed the rom and that seemed to do the trick.
I had this problem today. I'm was running a Mik rom and it wasn't connecting even though I had put the correct key. I also flashed another rom and it didn't connect. The only thing that really worked for me was waiting.
Do you have other secured routers you could try to connect to? If so, does it connect to those properly or no?

Thanks for the help everyone. I changed the password and it connected right away. I dont know why though because i checked several times to make sure my passwords matched.
I obviously have the Sprint S2, and I continue to have issues staying connected to my home wifi. I have no problems connecting to other wifi networks. It will connect, then after a few minutes, it disconnects, even though it shows I'm still connected in my notification bar. I've searched high and low. It seems many other people are having the same issue, but no one seems to have a fix. Anyone here know of a solution? Thanks in advance.

So I finally figured out what the issue was. A lot of mobile devices have a hard time connecting to highly secured networks such as wpa2. If you have a wpa, or wpa2 protected router, you can only use numbered passwords. Up to 10 characters. I tried this, and it's the only solution I found. If that still doesn't work, change your wpa2 security to wpa, with a numbered password only.

Try changing the channel on the router, force it to a different frequency B or G only also.

if you have to use numbers and only 10 chars, it sounds like a router config issue. sounds like you have WEP on rather than WPAx
Wifi busted
I actually have the same issue. Wifi worked flawlessly on gb. On ics every time phone goes to sleep it drops, notification says connected. Toggle wifi off and back on works, phone sleep back off. Tried wifi never, only when plugged in. Switched to 2.4 ghz only tried 5 ghz , too. Linksys ea4500 wpa2/aes(setting) brand new. None of the numerous other devices in the house have any issues. Speeds seem awesome.
Tried factory reset nothing works. Even got sprint to get me a new phone, still no solution other than going back to el29. Currently, running fi03 stock rooted. Scared to try latest fi25. Any other suggestions would be great.

still sounds like a router compatibility issue. See if it happens on a different wifi.
The only way i can successfully stay connected is if there is no security or wep is used. Same router nothing had changed. Again worked flawlessly with EL29 update comes to FF18 and it no longer works. Sprint has said it is a known issue with ics on samsung and htc but no fix. Don't want to give up my security just to use wifi. If i roll back to gb everything works again without changing anything in the router. So i don't believe that is it. Plus, i know all about router settings not a noob. I beleive it to be something in the phone update.

My wife runs fully stock newest release and its fine. Try a different router. routers can have compatibility issues with devices. Also you say "its a known issue" but can you give a source?
I'm not saying its router settings. I'm saying it can be a compatibility issue between router and phone chipset.

I guess i should've mentioned there are 2 of the same phone in the house. Wifi works fine on the other device. Source? As in sprint tech support told me over the phone it was a known issue with samsung and htc devices, not all are affected. This is why sprint decided to replace my old non working phone for the new one.
Not sure why of it were truly a setting inside the router why would one work but not the other? Seems highly improbable to me, just saying. I do appreciate the feedback though.

So two of the same phones. One connects and one doesn't. Interesting. About the tech, seems a pretty wide declaration of an issue. samsung and htc phones. lol. There are a ton of those and its a 'known issue'. If it were a known issue, they would have it tied to a specific phone and wouldn't say 'well err um some phones work and some dont'. lol. Anyway, I don't usually trust those techs.
Back to the issue. If one works and one doesn't... Then it sounds software or still compatibility type issue.
Have you tried these things? If it were me, this what i'd try....
1) I'd reflash your phone's ROM fresh and try again. Full wipe. It's possible the update boinked your wpa_supplicant settings.
2) DHCP: stick a static IP on your android and see what happens. (dont confuse this with a static dhcp lease) DHCP does some interesting things on android phones as far as wakelocks and such.
3) In the router, turn off all the bell and whistle crap... Some of these routers have things like 'afterburner' and things like that. It can cause issues at times. Keep track of what you turn off and obviously if it don't work, turn it back on again.
EDIT:
This is interesting as well. Your not the only one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847889&page=4
Try the things I posted but ultimately, you may need to just flash a different ROM version... Doesn't mean you need to go all the way back to EL26. At least you know its not only you...
So I initially called Centurylink, and they told me to change security settings. I did this, and it worked for a short period, but then dropped again. I couldn't figure out why this kept happening, and it had become quite frustrating. Then I realized that I had created a new network with a personalized name and password. My laptops connect fine to that network, but my phone won't, so I connected to the initial network created by Centurylink, and have had no issues. So I can suggest trying that as well. Hope that helps

Same issue for me too, since moving from gb. Running S710.10 S.FI27
I see this on both of the WIFI networks I connect with regularly. Home is worse. Every other device at home, including phones, PCs, TVs, tablets: mine and guests, can connect and stay connected just fine. My Epic 4g with ICS can't stay connected to save it's life.
I'm about ready to try the less complex key route, but not my 1st choice. Any other ideas?

different rom? mine never ever disconnects running cm10.
Set up both home networks using WPA/WPA2-PSK and no issues. Did have issues at work with WEP so perhaps that's the offending solution? If so try TKIP instead.

Gone in FI25/FI27 - looks like it won't be re-appearing until JB, at least if FI10 was accurate in this respect.
So we have two smt310's in our household. Both will connect to our sky router individually but when I try to connect both at the same time they end up kicking each other off the network! I've tried with dynamic and static ip's but still the same result?
One tab is running slimkat and the other cyanogenmod (both were running CM but I installed a different firmware in case, for some reason the firmware's were conflicting with one another).... I'm at a loss, any ideas guys? It's proper doing my head in!! ?

hi,
on just a quick search, the idea of spoofing your mac address may be what you need, check this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2286440
alternately an approach by modifying your kernel might work, more intensive though
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1878506
also maybe download and install from fdroid an app called network discovery.
after install , first launch will prompt you to update NIC database, do so.
then run scan to find your modem and paste that address in your browser to access and modify/maintain
your modem from your tab. Not an intuitive setup so have a look at the app's config and adjust as needed.

Wow, cheers! A lot of things to try there, I never came across then when Google-ing! Good effort ??

Bloody nice one @moonbutt74 it was my mac code, unfortunately flashing the kernel just left me with a bootloop so I tried to just delete the efs/wifi/mac_info file. Rebooted and low and behold my mac address was different and all the tablets now connect to the network at the same time!!!! Thanks so much for your help, I don't think I would have thought of changing the mac address! #legend
