[Q] CM6 Wifi Sleep Policy still not working properly? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having a problem on all of the recent nightlies, and i know lots of people are having the same problem on the CM6 RC2, where turning off the screen puts the wifi to sleep, even when you have the wifi sleep policy set to "Never".
I noticed this when i started trying to stream music from Grooveshark or Subsonic- if i turn the screen off, the song stops a few seconds later, presumable because it has run out of buffer.
Is anyone else still having the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for this?
edit: it seems to have no problem staying awake on my home network, but my work network is where i have the problem- could it be something about the wifi network that is doing this?

well, strike that- i'm encountering the same problem on the 2.2 stock rooted ROM as well. it appears to be a problem with the wireless network here at work.
I might have left my phone screen on at home, which would have let everything buffer, preventing me from noticing the problem there, but i'm pretty sure the wifi sleep policy works correctly on my home network. Very strange.

This is easily reproducible for me as well and only started happening with CM6.

for me this happens on every rom, even stock. there has not been a day i've gone to bed and woken up 8hrs later with my wifi on.

I'm glad I'm not the only one- though it seems to happen more to N1 owners, it seems this is happening to android users all over the place. From everything I've read today, no one can figure what causes it- there's no rhyme or reason to it. For me, the wifi sleep policy works correctly on my home network, but not my work one.
I read a post from a week ago somewhere that there was a fix coming from broadcom (those are the same people that are responsible for my router's wireless N problems with DD-WRT), but I don't know if that was referring to a Nexus One specific fix or a fix for all android phones.
I'm glad at least my wifi sleep policy works correctly at home, but the fact that, for some reason it doesn't work on a different network is extremely annoying.

Is streaming/internet radio working on your Desire? (issue with wireless N patch?)

It's not working properly on mine, ever since I moved up to FroYo a couple of weeks ago.
Streaming works fine over 3G but if I use it on wi-fi, with the screen switched off, the music starts stuttering and eventually skips.
Thought it was an issue with the rom I was using, but I've tried three different ones (including one of the new ones from this afternoon) and I'm seeing the same issue.
Wi-fi policy is set to never sleep so it can't be that.
Could somebody test it out and let me know?
NB
It only happens on wi-fi
It only happens when the screen has been off for one-two minutes
Update, in the off-chance that somebody, somewhere has actually bothered to read this...
Flashed back to 2.1 and the issue was gone. Back to 2.2 and the issue is there again.
edited to remove pointless speculation. solution is on page 2.
why would you call HTC support, surely thats a job for the last.fm development team to work out.
Because I don't think it's an issue with last.fm. It apparently works fine on non-Sense phones, and even works fine with the earlier versions of HTC Sense.
Last.fm has permission to keep the phone awake, and it does so over 3G but not over wi-fi.
It doesn't really make sense unless the newer version of Sense is throttling the wi-fi when it goes into sleep mode and is not allowing last.fm to keep the phone awake.
Can't really verify that though... I might try to find another app that uses the wi-fi connection and see if it exhibits the same behaviour when the screen is off.
edit: just checked with the speedtest.net app and switching the screen off freezes the download in its tracks. Resumes again when you switch the screen back on.
Phone/Wifi sleep issue while not plugged in
Hi, I can confirm that this is happening to me with XiiaLive in an identical way.
- 3G streaming works ok
- Wifi + screen on works ok
- Wifi + screen off BUT plugged into AC works ok
- Wifi + screen off => drops the connection after a couple of minutes
I went mad yesterday trying to make xiia work, but then realized that this could be the case and found this post and another one on Modaco (http://android.modaco.com/content/h...s-possibly-a-request-for-the-next-modaco-rom/)
So you actually saved me the time of testing it in other roms, but anyway, which rom have you got ? I have ieftm one.
I can save you the time to test it with other streaming services, I've tried them all hehe.
It could be a phone sleep issue, rather that a wifi sleep.
Well, like I said above, my guess is that the newer version of sense is throttling the wi-fi to save battery life when the phone is idle. The wi-fi is still working but it's capped at a lower speed.
You can test this by installing tunewiki and trying out a few radio streams. 96kbps works perfectly, 128kbps is ok but stutters a little at times. Then when you go up to 192kbps (which I think is the quality last.fm streams at) it can't keep up anymore and the tracks skip.
re:roms - I was on ieftm, am currently on modaco and was on modaco r5 and r6 before that. All of them have the same issue and all are based on the FroYo/Sense roms.
Hm, it´s working just fine for me. Listening to it right now with display turned off, no problem here.
Using the original Froyo on a debranded Desire...
What do you mean by original FroYo? As in vanilla?
From what I can tell it's only happening on Sense roms.
My statement was a little misleading. I was referring to the normal OTA update...

Hmm. And it's on wi-fi and it's not plugged in to the mains?
Weird. I can't replicate this on any FroYo + Sense rom. I haven't tried an unrooted 2.2 rom, though.
Be good if we could get somebody else on an OTA 2.2 rom to confirm this.

Nope, neither on 3G, nor plugged in... Used last.fm quite a lot in the past days and never experienced your troubles. It only runs on Wifi and mostly unplugged.
Very odd. Thanks anyway.
Maybe this is unique to rooted roms, then.
edit: all the roms I've used have had the wi-fi n patch, now that I think about it. Will see if I can find one that's unmodified.
That's a nice finding (about throttling speed). About n patch: it had problems from day one (and I don't need it), but I can't recall if the version of ieftm I installed has it. Any way to check it, or do you know if it was included from the start ?
Fixed. Did a full wipe and installed a rom that didn't have the wireless n patch. Problem gone.
Sibbi, thanks for posting. Wouldn't have occurred to me otherwise.
Anybody else experiencing an issue with streaming radio/podcasts over wi-fi while the screen is idle, you can grab a rom without the wireless n patch here:
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-froyo-pre-rooted-no-hboot-with-radio-deodex/
Pick one of the 'with radio' roms. Odexed or deodexed doesn't matter. Make sure to do a full wipe first.
Nice ! Any way to remove the n patch without changing rom ?
Don't know. It could be as simple as extracting the rom and removing the patch, but I couldn't say.
If we could find out where exactly the N patch is and what it's called, I'd be willing to try it out.
You'd still have to wipe and reinstall though
I'll try to find the original n patch and see what changes in regards to modaco original rom

This was for 2.1, but it might just be the same hack ? It's a small hex edit and a file substitution (kernel module if I'm not mistaken). Will try it tomorrow if nobody does it in the meantime, too drunk right now ...
I'd be a bit wary of that tbh. I don't know enough to go messing around with it. Especially not at two in the morning, when I should already be in bed.
I did find this part interesting:
"Also in theory WiFi n will most prob drain more battery than WiFi g but in my zip's there is k newer firmware which is suppose to help in battery drain."
I wonder if the improvement to battery drain that he's talking about involved throttling down the wi-fi connection when the phone was idle?! Hmm.
Probably, will mess with it tomorrow after a sleep and a nandroid

[Q] Whatsapp drops connection on Wifi.

So yeah, I have been noticing that my Desire running on the latest MildWild software (and Cyanogenmod 7.2) for that matter has been trouble keeping it's connection constant on Whatsapp.
Basically, it stops 'reporting' when it comes to 'last seen'. Sometimes I have to turn off Wifi (It is mostly on Wifi, can't recall it being the same story on 3G but I think so too) to fix the connection. Other times it just reconnects after a minute.
This happens when the screen is turned off and back on.
It's getting a kind of annoying and I have no idea where to look. I've checked my modem and router and both are fine.
Anyone else with this problem? Any ideas how I can fix this? Also, Wifi Sleep Policy has been set to 'Never'.

Sudden network drops on both Wifi and wired

Something Odd today.
Haven't had much issue but I started using XBMC on the ouya. Was watching an SD movie, so not much throughput, and all of a sudden playback stopped saying the connection timed out. I didn't think much of it, and I figured it was an issue with the alpha build of the SF capable XBMC...
Well it happens a few times, while I was running a ping to it. Turns out the connection was dropping. Fine, no problem, its right next to the wifi AP so ill switched to wired, I heard of wifi issues with the ouya. Well... its still doing it. About every 5 minutes or so I have a connection drop, lose about 20 packets, and it doesn't always happen under load.
Anyone see this? this could either be an overheat issue, or a driver issue, but I haven't seen it yet, so I'm wondering what its doing all of a sudden.
Weird... fixed after a hard reboot. BTW originally I was having issues from a cold boot, so for some reason theres some instability, possibly on some boots

Wifi problems after mm update

I've checked around and have seen other phones with the issue, but I've tried the fixes like forgetting network and resetting network settings. Ever since mm, every time my phone screen shuts off, it disconnects from wifi, kind of. I will still be connected jn settings, but it says no Internet available. I have to reconnect every time, and then it will work until my screen goes off again. I feel like this is killing my data since I don't always notice it. Has anyone had this problem and fixed it? I'm completely stock, no root or anything. Just did a factory reset a week ago and hoping I don't have to do it again since I'm finally set back up.
Have this issue with both wifi and mobile data. Mine doesnt matter whether the screens been off or not. Its like it goes to sleep periodically no matter what. Never had the issue until the latest update. Its not tied to a specific app, so its either the radio or a bug in the phone.

Verizon S8+ Bugs and Issues

Hi everyone,
I have 2 Galaxy S8+ from Verizon and here are my issues:
Past issues:
One of them did not come with the Galaxy Apps store (Not the plays store), and that phone also experienced the DQA issue
Current issues:
If I turn on Fingerprint gestures, the fingerprint sensor will stop working, this was an issue I had from the day I got the phone and has continued even through the updates. Here's a thread I made about it a while ago : https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/help/fingerprint-sensor-t3595614
My internal speaker has detached, or at least I think that is the issue, as sometimes when I am in a phone call and shake the phone just a little bit, it will either start making a weird buzz sound or completely cut off the sound. Shaking it again will fix it, that's why I think it's a physical issue. I haven't dropped my phone and just in case I ever do, I have a case and a screen protector on it, and neither of them (phone, case, screen protector) have any damage marks on them.
The Biggest Issue: Currently this is the most annoying bug I am experiencing is that whenever I go to lock screen and security in the setting app, it crashes the settings app. I also can't use the search function in the settings app, as it crashes the app withing a few seconds. The lock screen and security is the only menu in which I experience this, I am 99% sure this is due to me turning on Secure startup. I had it turned on a few days after I got the phone and it worked great, I had to turn it off once, about a month ago in order to get a quicker boot. After that I was experiencing issues turning it back on (meaning I turned it on, rebooted the phone and it would not work) , after some persistence, I was able to get it to work and it has worked and still works.
One thing to mention is that I had done the most recent system update, I am not sure this issue was caused by at, since the inability so search in the setting menu has happened prior to the latest update.
I have tried everything other than a full factory reset (wiping all cache, wiping apps cache, reset setting, reset network settings), which I refuse to do, It is absolutely unacceptable for me to pay this much for this phone and have so many issues with it, I have factory resetted my phone (Samsung's recommendation) in order to fix the first issue listed above, multiple times and it did not work.
At this point I really don't know what to do, Samsung support has been useless in this, I don't wish to replace my phone right now as I need it to much to even give up for one day, If anyone has any advice/fix other than factory resetting, I'll happily try it.
Thank you,
GGgamer16
Sounds like a factory reset is needed. I just tried all you mentioned with zero problems on the newest update w/ navbar options and experienced none of that. Speaker problem is most likely hardware related.
Anyone had any luck getting rid of the wifi disconnect? The issue where wifi disconnects showing a ! next to the wifi symbol on the status bar?

You try changing your WiFi channel? Using 5ghz or 2.5ghz? I use Wifi 100% of the time I'm home and never have any issues with disconnects.

Yeah I have tried changing channels. It didn't matter. I'm on 2.4 GHz.
I found a possible fix from another forum. I changed my wifi encryption from wpa2 AES/tkip to wpa2 tkip only last night and was rock solid after that point. I didn't have any more wifi issues... Just wanted to mention this change for other people. I usually got 5+disconnects every night. I'm gonna try just the AES option tonight and see how it acts.
