For those wanting a quality car mount, here it is. ProClip stuff is awesome. Its pricey but it works.
Completely worth it if you go with the fixed install.
I just ordered mine, I've always loved proclip.
Ordered!
I've been waiting for this bad boy to come out.
I wish that they would sell the basic holder without the swivel. I think that the entire mounting system looks much better without it. Oh well I'll just throw it in a box like I did for my G1 swivel mount.
I have a N1 ProClip holder somewhere around here. I need to see if I can figure out a way to mate it to a quality suction cup mount. If so, Ill get the Evo one.
do u guys know if the non-adjustable one works w/ the innocase II case? doesn't look like it, but figured i would ask....
this can be in landscape mode no problem huh? i should mention and it stays in landscape mode without any movement?
i bet this would work nice with an otterbox too...
hmmmmm
any videos anyone?
I dont think it swivels without leaving it loose.
I was thinking about it, but it us too expensive,i might just try a cheapo vent mount one to start

I'm sure this will work:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Car-Dash-Air-ve...80550909556?pt=PDA_Accessories#ht_1166wt_1137
Yeah, it's for an HD2 but it may work..the Evo is just a fraction of a millimeter thicker, but essentially the same dimensions. The holder is wide open so all the buttons are exposed including a hole in the back of the holder for the speaker/camera. Even if I have to mod the holder a little once I have it, for $7 and free shipping and it fits on a standard Nuvi mount, which I got rid of anyway now that I have the phone's better Navigator....I'll take a chance with it before spending over $50 for a product that does the same thing. Just my two cents.
It should be here in a couple of days, as I ordered it about 5 days ago....I'll let you all know how it works out.
Cheers
i guess im out of luck since im using the sedio rugger holster.

Use the ProClip iPhone holder that they also suggest for EVO's with cases.

I don't take credit for the video but I found THIS low profile car mount that's made for the iPhone and works just as well for the EVO. HERE it is at Amazon.
i really like this! it looks classy. plus the phone seems more secure in the cradle then in some of the other car-mount solutions i've seen. thanks for pointing this out!
I'm going to pick one up on payday and I'll see how good it is and give a report back.

I've had that one for a while. Very nice.
My only complaint is that in portrait mode I have knocked the phone out of it a couple times. It's plenty solid, it's just not that hard to flip the phone out of it.
Do you guys think there's any chance an Evo with the Seidio Innocase Active would fit in this?

The video has a quote that says it should work with thinner cases but not thick ones. I personally have a carbon fiber skin on mine and I'm pretty sure it will work as the guy in the video, his phone is naked. I don't know what differentiates a thick from a thin case but you could always order it and if it doesn't fit you could just say it doesn't fit and return it, but then you would have to eat the shipping cost. Your guess is as good as mine. Maybe someone will come on here that has a thick case and give his thoughts on the matter. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Cheers...
EDIT: There is a comment below the video that say:
Unfortunately it does no work with one of those rubber-like cases. I tried with the one manufactured/distributed by HTC for the Evo and it would not fit in mount. There is still a slight chance that if it was in a thin hard case it might work.

Wow, finally installed this in my wife's Mazda 3 (vent mount) and it just rocks. Super sturdy in either portrait or landscape, easy to snap the EVO in and out. Thanks a bunch to the OP for the tip. Hard to beat this one for the quality, ease of use, and price.
I love this car mount, thanks for the tip.

main reason i want one is because it's a pain in the ass to hear my ringtone in a jeep with the top and doors off. it would be nice to see a call come in while driving.
Terax XWAY. Strong enough magnet to hold into the phone even with the ridiculous spension setup I have in my Integra. I love using it, and it's completely portable, like throw it in your pocket, take 5sec to put in in another car, and go.

Only vent mountable. There seems to be no goose neck for the windshield. This would not serve my purpose. Plus it seems a little bulky compared to the Kingston. It is also more expensive than the Kingston. No thanks... I'll stick with the Kingston.

And it would mess with the compass apps and we'd have to stick something on the Evo
Just thought I'd chime in and report how it works with the Seidio Innocase Surface II.
The phone with case on fits fine. The issue is because of the added 2-3 mm of thickness and the smooth feel of the Innocase, it makes it infinitely easier for the phone to slip out of the mount. I haven't had it fall out on me since I always keep my phone in the landscape position while in my car but it will slip if you drive over bumps while its in portrait.
I'm looking into getting some kind of rubber tape so I can make the grip the mount has on the phone a bit more tacky.
I finally ordered this mount and when I get it I'll see about doing a small video review so as to let everyone know what it's like. It's made for the iPhone and wouldn't you know it, EVO is stealin' the show once again. LOL Man I like my EVO. It's such a kick ass phone. Now with an awesome low profile car mount I can finally use it with Google Navigation point-to-point and not have to keep looking down at it while it's laying on the passenger seat.

I am assuming the Seidio 3500mah battery won't fit in this? Anyone?
I just had a tinkering revelation and ended up making something in 30 seconds that i have been looking for for weeks.
Originally inspired by the car dock epoplive made as well as khaaan on Overclockers UK forums, I cut out the intermediary step of finding a case that the phone can snap in and out of easily. I ordered a suction cup mount for a Garmin Nuvi 205 off ebay for $4:
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270626403250&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_2572wt_1137
When I got it this afternoon, I took a look at the clip that is meant to hold the Garmin unit and thought that it looked quite close to the dimensions of the Captivate. Holding the phone in it, it was about 1/2" - 3/4" too wide. So I simply took a lighter, slowly and gently heated up the corners of the clip, and bent them slightly inwards. Out of luck, my guesswork bending resulted in a perfect fit. I added some thin sticky-back foam strips to make the fit more secure, and that's it!
The phone snaps in with purpose and is held in place even as I flail about testing it. It looks super clean, works well, was easy to make and cost a total of $4.
(The pictures were taken with my old E71x; when I find the charger for my point-and-shoot, I can get some better quality pictures up.)

Nice! I'm doing one too!
Great mount.
I think you did a great job. I've been looking for one for a while. What if you have a silicon case? Would it still lock?
If so, you wouldn't need the foam.

That was one of my first thoughts. I just returned my bodyglove case, but it seems like it would work just as well, you will just need to bend the clip just a little bit less to compensate. One thing I should tell you, you may need to modify the clip in such a way that the ridges that hold the device are further *out* to compensate for the added depth of a silicon case too.
Nice! Good job.
Nice! I may have to go get a new car clip to try this. It's kind of funny, because the first thing I thought about the clip was 'Boy, this sure is close to the size of the phone, if only it was just a bit smaller'.
Does the phone stay in when you rotate it?
Yes! I just drive for about a half hour on back roads with the phone in portrait and it didn't move one bit. Did you see my "flail test" video?
awesome!
Exactly what I was looking for.
I'm interested to see if someone gets this working with the bodyglove silicone case...

So is ebay out of the question for you? There are plenty for sub-$3 on there.
I looked at Staples a couple weeks ago and they have just the ball joint and suction cup (no actual clip) for I think $14.99 - outrageous.
Awesome! I just order two. Thanks for the tip!
Does this scratch the sides at all from being clipped in and out so often or did you put foam on the clips where the phone would touch as well?
just ordered one... think i will pop off the ball joint and drill a screw through the center and attach to my pivoting blackberry 9700 proclipusa mount in my car. That way i got the pivot and it is mounted and not on the glass.
will update with pictures... will probably still order the proclip when it is released...

No foam on the clips. The plastic is smooth, since it is where the gps would clip in. I don't see any trace of damage in the phone (and believe me, I would notice. Still babying this phone)

I know there a few threads about windshield mounts but none of them have what I'm looking for. I am looking for a windshield mount for my 2000 Ram 1500. I want it to mount on the BOTTOM on the windshield and come to the edge of the dash so it will need to be fairly long. I switch between the Seidio Innocase II surface and the Seidio 3500mah extended battery so I need something that will accommodate both of those. I also need it to switch between portrait and landscape. The Kensington windshield mount for the Iphone looks like it would be great but it doesn't look like it will allow me to use my extended battery.
What have you guys found that might work for what I need?

I bought this after finding a thread about it on another forum. Best accessory ever. Extremely quick and easy to install, rotates portrait/landscape ... can't complain about anything. It uses your CD slot - you just put it in the opening and clamp it down.
It's actually started to become a problem because I'm constantly distracted while driving by my cellphone now. It's just right there up in my face, gorgeous and begging to be played with.
Can't post the link since I'm new here ... but you can Google it easily.

Dunno how long it is but I have am ikd z car and its mounted to the bottom of my windshield and comes to the dash edge. Probably 6in or more. It was tricky too cause my car has a high rake angle and I wanted it mounted so it wouldn't show Tue mount at all in videos. It does block half the camera but it clamps hard enough that you can scoot it up and get the camera free.

Hi guys, I just picked up the ARKON SM515 mount for my GS3 and I love it. I think it was $16 on amazon. (link to their site http://www.arkon.com/Galaxy S III/slimgrip-galaxy-s-3-mini-windshield-car-mount.html ) They also have one called the AP515 which is for the iphone and its a few bucks cheaper but I just don't know if the GS3 will fit. The SM514 is similar to the 515 but it's a tiny bit bigger due to the adjustable arm (another great one to consider if you have the room for it) Anyway I mounted in a weird spot near my radio on the center of the dashboard. It can swivel in almost any direction which is cool and it's holding on tight. You can adjust the feet that hold the phone and they have rubber padding that way they won't scratch anything. I mounted mine using the included dashboard sticky pad. Here's a few pics taken with my bionic. (not the best camera)
p.s. In case any of you are wonder i'm using the Fosmon TPU + clear back case from amazon. It's around 6 bucks.

Taking the phone off the mount is pretty easy but this thing does hold it pretty firmly in place. I don't know how easy The 3M sticky pad will come off as it feels pretty solid on there. In my case my dash is plastic so it should come off pretty easily (but not too easy I hope) . You may want to contact their customer service and see what they say about it

Can anyone recommend a good car mount?
I just bought some cheesy magnetic thing from Amazon. Will be returning ASAP. Ideally, I think I'm looking for something that can clip into either the air vents or on the dash of my car. I realized there probably aren't many pixel specific accessories made yet, but maybe someone has had good success with a different model for an earlier phone?
Anyway just wondering what you all were planning on using.

I've had the third generation iOttie car mount for about a year, and it is excellent. It doesn't have a vent clip, but its suction cup mount is very sturdy. It even comes with a little pad you can use if your dash is textured.
I second the ProClip. You can get a custom mount for your vehicle, and select a separate holder. I've got a custom mount and a universal holder that can be adjusted if you switch phones.
I second the recommendations for iOttie mounts. I bought their wireless charging one back when I got my Galaxy S6, but I still use it with my Pixels because it is incredibly convenient to secure and remove the device. Excellent quality, usability, and adjustability, well worth the purchase.

Looks like a solid product! I have an '09 Kia Spectra and the dash doesn't look like an easy place to put a phone mount. I checked out their custom mount for my car and the only drawback I can see is it completely covers a vent (for a/c) which may or may not be an issues, I won't know until mounted but.. Any experience with that for you?
Yea on my prior vehicle I had it cover the vent. It was out far enough so it still put out air but it wasn't really directional as far as flow as before. Center ones I didn't care as much about being pointed at me to keep cool. It was a solid bracket though

Another vote for Proclip's mounting solution. The universal large holder works fine with my Pixel 2 XL with a (Caseology Parallax) case. It's pricey but it works beautifully.

I bought the IOAuto Pro. It attaches to the vehicle mount that I purchased previously from Proclip. It comes with small circular metal disks that should be attached to your phone.
I hate the thought of using adhesive to stick anything on my phone so I'm going to try and place the disk between the phone and my TPU case. In think the magnet will still work fine.
Check out YouTube. I've seen a couple of videos of others installing it.

I like this simple magnetic holder:
Techmatte MagGrip Orbit Universal Air Vent Magnetic Car Mount Holder
It requires a thin metal plate which works fine if you use a TPU case or other case that's not too thick on the back; this way, it doesn't require any permanent application. I bought 3 for family members, and a friend got one after seeing mine. It's easy to mount, secure, very simple in design - it uses a steel ball that mounts to an air vent, and a magnetic piece that connects to the ball, giving easy adjustment in all directions, or complete removal. This magnetic piece connects to the phone's steel plate. My wife has an iphone 6P which works well; I have a nexus 5X.

Adding a :good: for the ProClip. Mine just came yesterday and works perfect.

I hate the thought of using adhesive to stick anything on my phone so I'm going to try and place the disk between the phone and my TPU case. In think the magnet will still work fine.

I'm curious to see if that works out for you. I'm intrigued, but it seems like $50 is a bit steep for that mount. If it works well for you with a case, I may consider it though.
I know my solution isn't going to be for everyone, but it works well for my needs. I have a hybrid Proclip/Ram Mount solution. Proclip for the center dash mount, then Ram Mounts for the rest (ball, short arm, and X Grip holder). It's more involved than the common solutions, but it puts my phone right whereIi want it and it's rock solid--which is important for those track days.
As mentioned upthread, this does partially block the vent, but on my Mustang not by too much, and the passenger still gets air flow when it's directed their way. A bonus is the phone stays nice & cool when staying on playing podcasts while commuting, or running the telemetry apps while on track.
I can strongly recommend this one. They're a little pricey but I have them in my truck, car, 4-wheeler and mountain bike. Just the spring clips are strong and when you add the rubber sling it'll hold on to the phone almost no matter what. This one actually fits my P2XL better than my PXL. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0066BWMNU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
