[Q] Difference between Rooting & Debranding? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi.. please anyone explain what is Rooting and what is De-branding??
By the word de-branding I understand as removing the Network specific ROM and installing the HTC supplied ROM... but what is Rooting??
I am currently on UK T-mobile desire and I would like to install Froyo on my phone.. I went through few forums and finally got a good link (below) which has steps to debrand and install Froyo... but while browsing I came across few people talking about rooting..? i am confused... Please help...
www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/blog/20100822-how-debrand-htc-desire-update-froyo

yep, debranding is getting rid of any network apps, logos etc..
rooting is gaining super user acces (hack).. both very easy to do and you will lose your warrenty if you root..
hope this helps! good Luck!

It is possible to un-root your phone however.

Can you change rom without rooting?

I have a T-mobile uk branded desire (firmware version 2.1 -update 1 )
(software number 1.15.110.11), I dont want to root as i want to keep the warranty, but the low volume problem is really pissing me off, I tried to watch a film while stuck on the underground today, I could not hear a word of it, even with hi end sennheisers, its really pissing me off!!!
I have been told that switching to the stock HTC rom will solve the issue.
If possible pls explain how? I am an android newb and will need help.
Many thanks in advance.
sadly, no.
But if you have a problem, you can keep a backup of the stock HTC sense rom, and restore it. Additionally, you can restore the recovery to stock (I think i saw it somewhere).
After all that, you are good to go. Warranty still valid, and you can RMA it
Thanks for the reply, pls remember I am a newb, how do I do this???
Root your phone, do what you want with it, just keep this handy...
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_127570_signed.exe
It's the current T-Mobile UK stock ROM and can be reflashed at any point to return to stock for warranty purposes (link may go down occationally so keep trying until you have it)...to reflash the stock ROM just make sure you have your Desire connected to your PC with HTC Sync and run the file - simple as that!!
I really dont want to root it to be honest, the phone is perfect except for the media volume! Do you think if I contacted htc they would be able to tell me how to change the rom without rooting it?
You CANNOT change the ROM without rooting, and HTC wouldn't tell you as it's breech of their warranty...just root it, you can always go back to stock if need be using the file I posted
Rooting isn't for everyone. If you have doubts about it, you should not do it. It's better to read some more about it than to hastely brick your phone. Most bricks are solvable these days, but it is no fun to do. If you want root just for the volume, it's not worth it if you don't know what you're doing, imho.

I have a T-Mo branded Desire that I have de-branded to a stock ROM, it's been OTA updated to 2.2 and just this morning it OTA updated to the new release all without rooting.
You just need to create a goldcard (very easy using the helper program) which will allow you to install any stock RUU. I have left the goldcard in my phone as it works as a standard microSD anyway to avoid any problems that occur when updating with out a gold card in.
I can't post links as I'm too much of a newb around here but search and the links are there.

[Q] I want to root my DHD, can you guys help!?

Hey guys, I am a new Android user, and I need help to root my phone. I have read many threads about rooting DHD, but I am not really sure if I am certain to do it by myself. I also updated my software, it is 1.83.415.4
I am seeking help from anyone that can go through Rooting steps with me. So if you happen to have free time to help me hook up my phone, I would really be glad.
I really wanna root my device, please guys help me.
I would like to add to this question,
I sort of gathered on how to root I first download and install visionary, then temp root and then perm root and then flash a new ROM is this correct?
Another thing I plan to use Cyanogen 7 rc1,would I use all my contacts if I flash a new rom?
I've temp rooted mine but that's as far as I've got. I want to use a different ROM but don't fancy having the wolds most expensive paperweight.

Use MyBackup to backup / restore your contacts, although provided google backup is enabled it should take care of them

As long as you carefully follow the instructions, you are very unlikely to end up with a bricked device, flashing radios is the most likely stage to go wrong.
Can i recommend the CyanogenMod Wiki's root and flashing instructions

[Q] Noobie new to rooting

hey guys, im new to the forums and a recent convert from IOS
now i have a desire hd software build no 1.32.707.5
what would the best way going about rooting this be?
the phone is great but has a lot of bloatware i want to get rid of asap
not sure bout putting a new rom on yet
ive been tryin to read up as best as possible but getting conflicting reports from every thread i seem to open
with this version would i have to downgrade before i root?
can anyone point me to a straightforward huide to rooting and the software i would need?
thanks a mil
Hi and welcome to xda.
Your software version is good for rooting, no need to downgrade.
To root you should follow THIS guide as it contains everything you need to do.
Just follow the guide until you achieve ENG S-OFF.
thanks a million
will try it out this afternoon!!
Good luck! You won't regret it!
ok guys
i was sucessful in rooting my DHD
now what course of action could i take from here?
whats would be good apps to install now and how do i go about removing the more stubborn apps i dont want?
also what would be a good rom to install at this point if i so choose without having to do a radio flash
Downgrade or not?
There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice about whether downgrading from is necessary. Here they say not, other guides says its necessary to shift down to 1.32.
Is it necessary or not? Jhonnieblue did you downgrade?
Try Cyanogenmod7-RC2

Radio is separated by ROM, you can try later new radios, to test how much your "new" phone juices in your specific mobile carrier.
In my case, I installed CM7-RC2 ROM and it works just fine with 26.04.03.30 radio on Orange Romania. Keep in mind that you must have S-OFF enabled, otherwise you can't revert to an old radio. And make sure you have the right radio for your device or you will turn it into a brick

If you choose CyanogenMod 7-RC2 first, install ROM Manager. Since I can't post links for the moment, try to google for the full guide of rooting DHD on wikipedia for the official steps (or find the same link on cyanogenmod official site)
Then Google Apps (or gapps), the latest version for your device.
Then any app from the market, for me the first was Market Enabler, since in Romania Android Market was not available at the time. And still it is...unfortunately.

Just got a defy

I have just bought a defy and want to root it. Im not too keen on Motoblur and want to get rid of it if it is possible! However, I have never rooted a phone in my life. I have noticed that there are a few roms knocking around for this phone.Cyanogenmod and Gingerbread Android 2.3.4. Which is the best one? I will also need an idiot proof tutorial if anyone would be good enough to point me in the right direction. I would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance guys but Im a bit.....

Flashing a custom rom like Cyanogenmod will remove the t-mobile logo at bootup.
Before you start flashing a rom I'd recommend you to first browse some of the threads and to read some tutorials and FAQ's.

I assume I need to root my phone first and foremost? I will use SuperOneClick as this looks quiet easy to do, even for me.
Oops I forgot to add thgat my defy is on 2.51. Will this be a problem??? I want to be sure that I dont screw up my new phone. Cheers
I suggest you go to a stock 2.2.2 via MSU or RSD Lite. For your locale. Try it for a while (- the GB retail is very good). You don't need to root to do that, and it is fairly easy and safe.
You could then try and remove the Blur stuff and some bloat after rooting. Plenty of guidance around. This will increase your familiarity and experience, which you lack by your own admission.
If this doesn't give you what you want, then try a Custom ROM. Note that no 2.3 Custom ROM presently provides a "100%" experience. It may be that you need something they cannot yet deliver... I'm not sure why you desperately need to do this, not having tried 2.2?
Take things one step at a time and don't rush.

I will take your advice. What do I need to do to remove branding and bootlogo? I assume MSU stands for Motorola Software Update. What is RSD lite? How do I use either of them to remove the network branding? I know these questions are probably seem idiotic to you guys as you are the experts but this is my first adroid and I need to start at the beginning so any help with this is very much appreciated.
You have to learn all the basics at the development forum threads before making any changes to your phone.
I suggest you to root your phone, install 2nd Init (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212) and make a full backup before you get the party started.
You can debrand you phone (including the bootlogo) if you install a custom rom.
The questions you've asked are already answered on the forum in a better way than I could do.
So start trying to use the search tools and don't forget to read the forum rules.
I'm a newbie here too, and following these advices I didn't get in trouble yet...
I still suggest, as you are new to Android and phone hacking, that you take small steps and learn about Android before hacking. I'm not sure why you have a branded phone - why not just get a retail one?

It was cheaper than buyiong an unbranded version. Im reading up on it now and I think Im starting to pick things up a little. Android seems to be a lot more complicated than an iphone but Im getting there.................slowely

I made a mistake, the firmware version is 2.2.2. Right where do I start. I think I will debrand it first.
I followed this to debrand:

And then this to root:

Everything works fine.
I have now debranded it. RSDLite wouldnt work on my windows 7 desk top through. I followed the debranding tutorial to the letter but my defy wouldnt show up. I used my Vista laptop and it worked first time. It was actually quite easy. I do have another question though. I have debranded my defy and no longer have the t-mobile boot logo on start up. However, when I go into my menu, I do still have t-mobile widgets. How do I get rid of them?? I have tried dragging and dropping them into the waste bin but as soon as I got back into the menu, the widgets have returned. Its not a big issue but I would like to get rid of them if possible. Thanks in advance guys (again)
most probly u flashed a t-mobile sbf..other retail sbf wont show t-mobile widgets..anyways u can remove them with root explorer..its quite easy..

I flashed it with the UK Retail .SBF , version 2.2.2 service flash. Because I was already on 2.2.2. I went for the same version number. Im sure you klnow the one but here is the link.
http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy
Would it do any harm if I went for another version??
no no..2.2.2 is fine...anyways use root explorer to get rid of those crap..
the best way to clean install is to enter Stock Recovery, then do "Wipe data/Factory reset" and "Wipe cache" and then flash an sbf...this will wipe "everything" and will install freshly..

How do you enter stock recovery? Do you mean on the device itself?
Edit............Its ok, Ive susssed it out. I had to press trhe volume keys up and down simultaniously. This stuff is not that difficult to do once you get started and read through everything.

Remove bloatware

Hello,
I want to remove the bloatware on my wife's WFS.
The phone is S-ON.
I searched these forums, and found the program 'NoBloat', but therefor, the phone must be rooted...
I don't want to install custom roms, since she is very happy with the interface.
Anyone an idea?

First of all, you will need s-off, doesn't matter if you use a rooted stock or a custom ROM.
Take a look at the index thread in the general section, at the general guide chapter is a rooting tutorial linked.
Swyped from my Desire S
sorry but you have to root your phone to remove bloatware
seems we need to wait until htc releases a boot loader unlock or go for xtc clip
tx for your input!
i had such a suspision....
