OK guys so i was messing around with debian and the dream way to install lxde and i found that hero has the power to run it! give it a shot!
Download the package from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529233
But install by following the instructions from here http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/292093/debian-lenny-now-running-on-hero/ use the bootdeb that is on this page.
When Debian is installed go back to the first page and follow the instructions on how to get lxde running there.
And hey presto! we have lxde
For those of you who dont know what lxde is it is a desktop basically so your phone looks like a computer!
:-O Is this really a full debian install? or just an interface. Need to read more on this when I'm more awake!
edit. Just finished installing with instructions. It's a bit all over the place to find the right details.
How do you get LXDE to load? I'm stuck at the terminal
Sorry it was really late and I was like half dead from lack of sleep ! What exactly are you having s problem with make sure to install the new android vnc released like three days ago and then enter the local host stuff into that .

Don't worry about it, was half asleep when I saw it too. Couldn't resist giviing it a shot though. Got everything working now Works pretty well, though the UI is fairly laggy.
Im shocked it worked. It barely got to the desktop on the g1 i had before the memory overloaded and it crashed . The internet explorer works and u can enter text with the new vnc looks like it has great potential any idea how to get Flash working ??

I don't think there's native flash for arm, but you can try compiling
swfdec along with swfdec-mozilla, or gnash
Ubuntu Natty 11.04 running on Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 with flash support. I made two videos with instructions on how to do it.
Your Tab must be rooted and you have to have a kernel with loop device support.
I use official rom XXJQ3 with CF-Root XXJQ1 kernel.

Go Launcher EX with custom Glass Sense Theme
sadly, this has been done before. not trying to sound negative though some people might find it useful.
there was a project at one point where they were trying to get it to run native, but idk where it stands anymore.
i'm more interested in getting ICS functioning like it should if they get anything other than ubuntu running natively on the tab and it runs great, i'm all for it. ubuntu is bloated to hell now and i dont like the unity interface at all. i've been using MINT as of lately and i've been liking it so far
Why would anyone try to run two Linux operating systems at the same time on the cramped little Galaxy Tab is beyond my comprehension.
Still... seeing some of you guys are keen on connecting though a socket to another OS using your Tabs, try getting into a windows using Teamviewer (anyone can do it, no skill or risk involved and free of charge!). Or, if you feel adventurous, you can set up a VNC server on Windows, Linux (any distro) and establish a VNC connection directly to your desktop/laptop over wifi or 3/4G.
That should run at least twice as fast and provide the same results without your Tab heating up and eating a lavish 1A/h...
Peace,
C.

it doesn't have a gui you have to install it yourself. I installed gnome because i hate unity too.
Just a question.. if we can do that ... all we have to do it connect a keyboard and a mouse via Bluetooth and we will have here a tablet or something..
no ??
We probably would be able to, but you'd have to do a bit of hacking if you wanted it to run.

Yeah I for one would like to run something like Ubuntu with a GUI that we can connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to.
Our physical screen size plus a little higher "resolution" through lowering DPI would be perfect.
Having an actual computer phone would be dope!
I think so.. that would be awesome ...

One can increase resolution nicely with LCD Density Modder application, and I suppose others as well. The Bluetooth keyboard is a nice idea: has anyone tried it?
I have a BT keyboard I got from Amazon that I use with my phone sometimes. It's supposed to be for a Galaxy Tab but it works great.
I'd like to have an Android/Ubuntu dual-boot system, that's be rad.
I'm thinking it will eat the battery, plus ur gunna have to use vnc anyway which will ruin the experience?
-- i know its localhost
if that's a possibility, how can we add the cell applications to ubuntu though??
I remember doing it on my HTC G1 back in the day. It was actually VNC viewer but it was a full blown Linux that run and operated on the phone. Can't remember which distro it was. It had a lot of steps to get to work if I remember correctly.
I wouldn't be surprised if the method today was just a few steps and/or zip. I'm sure if you Google something, the methods should apply to our phone as well. I'd be nice if we could dual boot.
It was Debian.

In all honesty we barely have any devs (mostly just modders), so to be able to port something of this magnitude of our phone is probably not going to happen for a long time if ever
I'll try to do this today, but im not sure if our kernels supports loop devices.
I had chrooted ubuntu working, although it messed with my efs partition :-\ the idea is to get the subsystem up and running, then vnc into it from the android side. Its still a "local" installation but no working x11
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
how do we even start the installation ??
we copy it to the card .. and make the installation from it ??
and .. in both ways .. if it works .. or if it doesn't.. we just odin back ??
They had Ubuntu distros for the HD2, so it IS possible. Keeping my fingers crossed.
... Am I the only one interested in this ??
I mean .. where do we start from ??
We take that distro for HD2 and use it on our cell ??
The HD2 distro won't work on our phones, I was just giving that as an example that this CAN be done.
There will be more devs popping up, I'm sure of that. This phone has only been out for a few months, just be patient.
Help!
I think these links may be of help to those wanting to run Linux!

Alaways been currious of this myself but dont see what the added functionality would be on a device like the gs2, now a distro on something like a prime makes me drool

Hi, Has anyone been able to, or know of information on getting one of the linux distros onto the A100? (prefer something with a tablet interface like Ubuntu/Unity)
Cheers, hoss
If you mean to boot directly in Linux like the thread in A500 forum. No. Or not have been posted here.
Otherwise it's possible. You can run linux over android and connect to it from vnc on localhost but have a lag.
I'm sure it's doable. I am planning on reading up on the A500 forum and do it.
From what I saw scanning the posts, It sounds like they are running it as a VM and accessing gnome via vnc. Otherwise they just have cmd line.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1241623
Yes, using the 'Linux Installer' way with vnc n stuff works. I tested ubuntu n backtrack. Ubuntu works fine, just dont go with thu full ubuntu as it has unity on it and is just too damn laggy. Backtrack fails everytime. I havent tested the debian one yet though.

That's what i'm saying it's possible trough vnc.And it's not just terminal it's a working desktop machine.I did it following this instructions with little modifications.
But saying like the thread in A500 forum i mean this thread from wich they booting directly in Linux without Android at all.
Hello everyone! I just saw some news about this phone releasing tomorrow, and the Intel Atom processor caught my attention, as it has a 64-bit processor. I remember, long ago in the days of the very first Galaxy S, there was a way to run Windows 98 through emulation using QEMU and Bochs, however it was PAINFULLY slow since it was emulating the x86 architecture from ARM. Since this phone will not have that step to go through, does that mean it would be possible to run a fully-featured version of Windows on it, such as Windows 7? (or XP, 8, or 8.1, I just stated 7 for reference) I used to have one of the even older Sony Vaio UMPCs when they were cool, but they're quite slow for any modern tasks. I've dreamed of any kind of successor to it, so that I could have a device running the full Windows experience in my pocket (versus in my bookbag with a laptop or tablet).
Thanks in advance for the replies!
I am a current owner and hoping for the same thing. It does have the 64 bit Atom in it, so in theory, it should be possible!
Sent from my ASUS ZenFone 2 using XDA mobile app
in theory its possible.. except you won't have any driver support from asus whatsoever
so... basically everything wouldn't work properly..
i.e. EMMC storage
touchscreen
sensorhub
gps
cellular radio
you get the idea
Couldn't we write the drivers ourselves? I know it isn't an easy task, but it seems as though it should be possible.

For installing steam and play CS GO on my phone x'D
well.. may be it would be nice to have a working linux chroot with a working X server (with audio also) so we can use native linux programs on our little diamond. I know also that it has hdmi out, so we can use it like a pc with bt keyboard\mouse or microUSB with usb keyboard\mouse and hdmi out
I did that on my old htc ONE m7, working debian chroot on hdmi monitor, but the problem is always the X Server.. i was using VNC and it doesn't support audio
sorry for bad english

To have a way to run a full Windows installation that can fit in the pocket, without purchasing legacy UMPCs such as the: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-VGN-UX280P-4-5-inch-Laptop-Processor/dp/B000IALP88
I'm honestly pretty sad that they discontinued the UMPC concept, I wish it would have stayed.
tbh, I'm interested in seeing if we can get Wine compiled for a chroot'd linux on these beasties. If we can get that working, I could see fully working XP applications at some point.
There's a really good X Server already, XServer-XSDL, that's free on the Play store & plenty of chroot linux builds out there too.

About how fast is XServer as far as realtime applications go? Since it uses tunneling it seems like there would be some kind of delay, but I have no experience in such areas. If not, then getting Wine to run could open up a lot of possibilities!
XServer-XSDL is real-time since there's no tunneling. I've used it on a couple of my phones. Start up the chroot'd linux on the phone, start up XServer-XSDL, ssh into the chroot'd linux, export DISPLAY=:0 & start up your favorite windows manager. I like lxde or fvwm, personally.
I'm waiting for root so I can install backtrack.

Big thanks to shakalaca for maintaining the rooted images...
Yeah but I'll wait for an official way to root it with an unlocked boot loader.

So far have xserver-xsdl installed as the X server, installed debian Jessie to my sd card's 20 ish gig ext 4 partition using Linux deploy. Apt-get wine. Follow wine setup for first boot. I'll test some executables tomorrow.
Another thing is cpuinfo shows the vmx extension, so we could probably run qemu-kvm as well.

Edit:
Wine works fine and starts up applications okay and is pretty snappy. BUT it looks like OpenGL in Jessie may be messed up, so either need to see if Mesa has been fixed and recompile or go back to an older distro.
Edit 2:
We may not be able to get hardware accelerated wine with the proprietary powervr video card. Mesa glx shows no support and es2_info shows support but es2 gears won't run.
Well that's not looking good :/
