Debian LXDE working on Hero! - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

OK guys so i was messing around with debian and the dream way to install lxde and i found that hero has the power to run it! give it a shot!
Download the package from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=529233
But install by following the instructions from here http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/292093/debian-lenny-now-running-on-hero/ use the bootdeb that is on this page.
When Debian is installed go back to the first page and follow the instructions on how to get lxde running there.
And hey presto! we have lxde
For those of you who dont know what lxde is it is a desktop basically so your phone looks like a computer!

:-O Is this really a full debian install? or just an interface. Need to read more on this when I'm more awake!
edit. Just finished installing with instructions. It's a bit all over the place to find the right details.
How do you get LXDE to load? I'm stuck at the terminal

Sorry it was really late and I was like half dead from lack of sleep ! What exactly are you having s problem with make sure to install the new android vnc released like three days ago and then enter the local host stuff into that .

Don't worry about it, was half asleep when I saw it too. Couldn't resist giviing it a shot though. Got everything working now Works pretty well, though the UI is fairly laggy.

Im shocked it worked. It barely got to the desktop on the g1 i had before the memory overloaded and it crashed . The internet explorer works and u can enter text with the new vnc looks like it has great potential any idea how to get Flash working ??

I don't think there's native flash for arm, but you can try compiling
swfdec along with swfdec-mozilla, or gnash

android can't replace windows 6.5 because its not fully functioning. I would try it but dont expect it to be a replacement. what I am assuming you are referring to as 6.5 is probably "sense" from htc they load it with the phone as an interface to work on top of windows. I personally don't like it though many developers have customized it and seem to love it. you can turn it on and of in a menu setting. if you shut it you erik be left with actual windows 6.5 what they call titanium which I personally dont mind but im not sure you will like it. you should try out spb mobile shell it will give you a fully customizable experience that is similar to android and it works perfectly without it I won't really enjoy using my phone.they have a trial version available in the windows marketplace. try it I think you will be very happy.if you have any other questions feel free too ask .
im not trying to replace it wit android. i just saw on you tube tilt 2's running android as an app but i dont have the know how to do it. i think i put the one thats on the market place on and it slowed my phone down even moar. but ill try it again. i had the android app thing on my phone but i forgot to download the anti virus and well it corrupted my sd card and well i had to start over fresh so im trying to find one that will work

Android- best experience
For just running Android apps- Get the FROYO X build over in the Android Development section, then download the 3D Kernel (Google it, it's not on this site) and then download the Backlight and Camera kernel from the FROYO X page.
For Droid Incredible envy- Do the same, just with the SENSE X build from the same page. It's stable, just slow. Oh, and did you know you can have more than one Android build on your SD card at a time? Just change the startup.txt within the folder, and on the set cmd line, just add a rel_path=yourfoldernamehere within the quotes.
I hope I didn't throw too much info at you...

[Q] Android pc emulator with clockworkmod on??

hey guys,
just curious as it would be much easier to test out roms out before we flash them to our phone...
is there any way to install cwm onto an android emulator or make an android emulator that accepts the .zip files (the compressed rom) so we can view it on the emulator thats on the computer.
no worries if theres nothing like it but it would be alot quicker and easier.
Cheers
Bump for this. I would also like to know this.
i read somewhere that u could run android on ur computer... not sure about clockwork though... dont ask me for the site cause i saw it while i was on StumbleUpon
yeah its in the android sdk on google... trouble is its horribly slow and doesnt run clockworkmod unfortunately....
no worries if there isnt, its just the fact that it would be very nice to test a rom on the pc without having to miss a phone call or spend the time installing a rom then realise it was a waste of time lol.
fingers crossed something pops up in the future ay?
I think I saw a company working on a seamless VM sunning Android for Windows PC's.

that link has instructions on getting an old CM on your emulator.
if you're kitted out with the stuff to build CM from source, you can build for the emulator, then put your .img fils in the emulator's avd directory, and it will work.
it's amaingly slow though
yeah i know its pig slow lol
i like the idea of the vm android
every android emulator ive tried so far is really slow, even on two ssd's in raid 0 lol
well thanks for the help guys any more ideas keep them posted as it may help others

Ubuntu Natty 11.04 with flash support running on Galaxy Tab GT-P1000

Ubuntu Natty 11.04 running on Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 with flash support. I made two videos with instructions on how to do it.
Your Tab must be rooted and you have to have a kernel with loop device support.
I use official rom XXJQ3 with CF-Root XXJQ1 kernel.

Go Launcher EX with custom Glass Sense Theme
sadly, this has been done before. not trying to sound negative though some people might find it useful.
there was a project at one point where they were trying to get it to run native, but idk where it stands anymore.
i'm more interested in getting ICS functioning like it should if they get anything other than ubuntu running natively on the tab and it runs great, i'm all for it. ubuntu is bloated to hell now and i dont like the unity interface at all. i've been using MINT as of lately and i've been liking it so far
Why would anyone try to run two Linux operating systems at the same time on the cramped little Galaxy Tab is beyond my comprehension.
Still... seeing some of you guys are keen on connecting though a socket to another OS using your Tabs, try getting into a windows using Teamviewer (anyone can do it, no skill or risk involved and free of charge!). Or, if you feel adventurous, you can set up a VNC server on Windows, Linux (any distro) and establish a VNC connection directly to your desktop/laptop over wifi or 3/4G.
That should run at least twice as fast and provide the same results without your Tab heating up and eating a lavish 1A/h...
Peace,
C.

"Dangerous" Newb!

I did my first android root about a month ago - now I'm hooked on flashing and really want to learn how to customize my ROMs.
My first question - a lot of the tools seem to run in Linux. Is it a good idea to setup a dual boot on my laptop?
I've read this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1167623
Is this the right place to start if I want to pull apps off other ROMs to install in my own ROM? I've tried unzipping a rom, finding the APK, and so far, it always fails installation. So - is the thread above the right place to start pulling these APKs "the correct way"?
Came from the WinMo platform, been using Android devices for a little over a year.
Any help, pointing me in the right direction is helpful.
Again - I don't (at this time) want to learn how to MAKE a ROM, but "customize" what's already out there.
Thanks!

I am a windows guy, and most things can actually be done on windows, but somethings Linux is needed for. I use wubi, it's a dual boot, it works amazing. I primarily use windows, and you can use apktool to decompile and edit your applications, you can even set up "cygwin" and run the android kitchen through cygwin bypassing the need for Linux. but for the android utility by tommytomatoe Linux is needed as it's not windows compatible yet, I suggest using Linux to get used to it, I like windows so I like to use as much as I can without Linus, but Linux is a great operating system and wubi is the best way to run it IMO, I've tried all the VMware and running it inside windows and its just way more efficient using the dual boot and wubi is as easy as 1,2,3 to set up
best of luck man, it's addicting!!
i never used linux until about a year ago, and now i cant stand using windows for anything (although forced to use it at work)
there are limitations (online gaming etc)
but i started using it primarily for android but now it is my os of choice
i keep windows on one hd and ubuntu on another, but im pretty sure im gonna erase windows at some point and dual boot something else..maybe mint
wubi is a nice way to wade in to linux w/o doing a full install, but if you ever get into building source roms its not ideal and generally cant handle it, specifically because its partition isnt big enough
Thanks for the replies! Andy, I'm running your stock ROM right now. Love it! Pulled off all the stuff I consider bloat. Now I'm wanting to add some stuff from other ROMs that I have tried.
So...if I use the method you descried above, I'll be able to pull APKs off other ROMs that I've downloaded?
Thanks again.

yeah its mostly just convincing my wife that our home comp is ok w/ no "real" windows
she hates vm's...as actually an old laptop we have can only run windows in a vm (long story) and she uses that at work as a backup to show powerpoints
but ill probably just do it for good during my mini vacation, we havent booted into it in 2 months

That's funny, I have an old laptop with pretty modest specs. I put XP on it, and it borders on unusable, so I put Linux Mint LXDE on it and configured it to look almost exactly like Windows. It runs really well, but my wife hates it! She can't stand having to learn it's subtle differences (she's a COBOL programmer, so that might explain some things! )
As for the OP's question, depending on the specs of your notebook, you might be able to get away running Linux in a VM. I have VM's for Windows (for installing crap I don't want to install on my real Windows install), Linux and MacOS and they all run perfectly well.
A lot of people rave about VM Ware, I tried it and didn't like it at all. VirtualBox has always worked perfectly for me, and it's completely free. It's worth a shot, if for nothing else than testing 1- whether or not you really need to use Linux, and 2- which flavor of Linux you prefer and meets your needs.
On that second point, I used to use Ubuntu (and still have it installed on a little home file/print server), but recent versions have become resource hogs which might not play well in a VM on modest hardware. Linux Mint, which itself is a derivative of Ubuntu, is much more streamlined and light on resources, especially the LXDE (Lightweight X Desktop Environment) version. This would make it perfect for use in a VM.
imo
Everyone has a different preference when it come to Linux.
personally its very intemidating. I don't like doing.weird things my laptop wasn't made for.
but all u need is the basics, and a couple of good opinions, after that you should be OK.
trust me, after u figure it out, u can't stop.
It like crack!

I switched from Ubuntu to Mint the other day, and I'm liking it so far. I bought a small external hard drive to back up important stuff. I tried the upgrade option when installing, but it seemed buggy, so I did a clean install.
The only problem I've seen is the ATI/AMD proprietary graphics driver doesn't work properly for my laptop. I just run "classic" Mint, if not the graphics will bug out. I actually prefer the classic desktop anyways so it's not a big issue for me.
I've also got the android SDK with ADB and fastboot up and running now as well.
I'm still learning linux, but I like this distro better. If anyone has any suggestions or any advice to further my learning, I would love to hear it.

[Q] Final fantasy 4

Hello, first post here (and sorry if the english is a little cracky:laugh
My phone, HTC wildfire S, rooted and unlocked about a year ago, had a few roms on it (fun to try some new ones^^) for now i'm running spock rom
My problem is FF4 and it wont start up, i read a lot of threads about it, i had the apk and files, modded googleplay (u need this to go pass verification) going to all the steps, and when i try to start it, it's black screen and back to homescreen.
I had read that FF4 wont run on rooted phones when u buy it from playstore, so only way is to download it from other sites, i had read on a bunch of sites how to install this, and it wont start up
Anyone had it runs on WFS mobile? know the mobile isnt very gaming friendly but was thinking:
"maybe there is a best rom for playing"?
"or a trick or two to go deeper to config the mobile for better gaming (no idea what i'm talking about here so if there is, please use easy words on how to^^) maybe cpu higher (or lower?)
very thankful for answer

Yeah, u have a point there, it's true is getting a bit old, and the speecs isnt that good.
but its says that FF4 is working on our phone and the grapichs and stuff isnt that good, its basic a porting from the old game i think, or maybe the ds version and redone to fit a smartphone.
FF3 worked fine on our phone, and FF4 has not that much bigger speecs. So i should work and run pretty good i think.
anyway, i have tried a few roms now and test if FF4 works, but its the same result: black screen and back to home screen so i think i give up if not anyone has a suggest of what to do. :good:
