Is there any way to install the stock android keyboard? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As above, I'm using htc desire by the way.

Anyone can help out on this?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

I think what you're looking for is called LatinIME.apk.
You can either get it and extract it from a ROM that already has it - LeeDroid 1.8 (in sys/apps) for instance and use adb to push it to your device (or copy it to your sd card and use a file manager like Android Mate that you can download from the market and use the 'instal' tab) - or, search about and you might find someone has created a zip file that you can flash from recovery.

Does that mean there is no apk that I can install with?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

I'd like this keyboard too! It's by far the best one I've used on my desire.
However. It seems to be very difficult to get it!

OK - here's how I did it...
* Download the attached apk file to the root of your SD card.
* Install the apk
I used 'Android Mate' to do this (available for free from the market). This is done by selecting the install tab across the top of Android Mate which will find the apk you just downloaded. Tap on it to install.
There are probably a heap of different ways to install the apk - I just find the Android Mate way the easiest - no need for commands etc. and the software is free.
* Restart your Desire.
* Go to email, select menu > compose and hold your finger down on the text input area. This will give you an option to select 'input method'. Choose Android Keyboard and off you go.

Does that mean that if i want to use the keyboard, I have to keep doing 'Go to email, select menu > compose and hold your finger down on the text input area. This will give you an option to select 'input method'. Choose Android Keyboard and off you go.' ?

Nup - do it once and it becomes the default.
You can always change it back to the HTC keyboard using the same method (tap and hold) if you want.

Hi there, I downloaded the apk that you have posted but can't install it. I think the apk that you have sent is faulty.

Yup, I could not install the apk that you have posted.

What message does it give?
Is your device rooted?
Do you have it set to load applications from unknown sources? (settings > applications> tick the unknown sources box)?

My device is not rooted. It says the file cannot be parsed.

Yup.. still cannot...

Swype on MIUI roms?

Quick question for all the rooting gurus out there. I put an updated MIUI rom on my phone and went to re-load Swype from their website, completely legit.
I get an error message when I go to run it saying that my device isn't supported and will run with limited function.
Has anybody found a way around this error messages? Are people finding it with other roms?
Thanks!
That would be happening because you are using ur wrong version...

It's a bit bootleg but the only way I've been able to do it so far:
1. Download and install root explorer. You'll have to pay but it's a useful app and worth it
1. Download swype installer and install swype
2. After installation, there will be a screen with 4 options:
a. watch video
b. start tutorial
c. generate license
d. finish
Click "Generate license"
3. Click "select android keyboard" and change the radio button from "swype" to "android keyboard"
4. Press the home button to exit swype installer and open root installer
5. Go to /data/app
6. Click on "com.swype.android.inputmethod-1.apk" and long hold to bring up the options menu
7. Click move, scroll to /sdcard/download and click "paste"
8. Press the home button to exit root explorer
9. Open swype installer. You should get a force close error. If you do not and instead see the screen with "disable swype", click the back button which will bring you back to the home screen then click swype installer again. Do not continue until swype installer force closes.
10. Go back to root explorer and move "com.swype.android.inputmethod-1.apk" back to /data/app
11. Go back to the home screen and open swype installer
12. Click "select swype" and then select swype
13. Click "finish"
14. Enjoy
Hope that helps. If you have any questions, let me know.

You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar... I tried so many different things and wasted hours until I found this post. Follow his instructions step by step and you'll be up on swype in no time
This worked for me too. Just to add on, the root permissions for the com.swype.android.inputmethod-1.apk should be rw-r--r--. Set this permission in root explorer after long pressing it from data/app after you have completed everything. This is for people who are not able to see swype after rebooting their phone
I usually use TB to backup my swype from a sense rom (or any other rom where swype works correctly) then when I use MIUI i go to Tb and restore. Always worked for me!
Has anybody got this to work with the new Swype 3 beta? I have tried this twice to no avail.

I've got it downloaded and installed but it will not let me license it. Tried the above trick twice and cannot get it to work.

Found this solution from MIUI.us forums, it requires that you have an already licensed version of swype 2.x
Ok.. have a workaround. Miui automatically enables keyboards so no way to disable it.
1) If you have titanium backup you can first backup swype (not the installer), then uninstall swype, long press home and re-open the swype installer and proceed to login and reinstall swype.
2) Once installed don't press "Done. Long press home and switch back to titanium backup and restore your copy of swype, then re-open the installer (or press Done if already open).
3) Installer should now show something like "your copy is licensed, select swype" Just press select and choose swype, then click Finish. (Do not click Generate license).
Click to collapse
That did the trick. Titanium backup had already backed up the new version and it kept reinstalling it and would not work. Found a backup of the 2.x and was able to restore it. Thanks for all the help.
Thankyou so much

I looked everywhere for a way to get swype 3.x to work on my vibrant with MIUI but none of the stuff I found actually worked, EXCEPT THIS.
Like someone said right after your post:
You Sir, are a gentleman and a scholar...
This way took a couple of tries but it definitely worked
Tried the Titanium method thousands of times and variants on my Nexus S and didn't got it working.
The File Manager method worked like a charm, on the second try. Don't know if it matters, but worked after rebooting the phone and following rhe guide.
The good news is you don't need to expend money buying the Root Explorer App. I've used ES file explorer without any problem.
i didn't do anyspecial "trick" to get mine working, i just went thru and unistalled all the older version.. cleared cahces of app and installer, installed a redownloaded version off webpage.. then just went all the way thru till the 4 part screen, "generate license" just select the swype option and then i think i hit finish... can't remember the rest.. sorry..

This is a known bug on the Swype website. They have posted a workaround which I tried and it worked after several attempts:
"Unable to install Swype on MIUI Rom
When Swype is installed it needs to be unloaded from Android at the time the Swype Installer passes the authentication key to the Swype program. MIUI attempts automatically load and enable any input device into memory as soon as they are available. Because of this there is no reliable way of getting Swype working on MIUI, and even if you do it may not stay enabled for long.
However if you'd like to try, Android Peak has developed a workaround that works some of the time.
UPDATE: marchief has found a workaround which does not require the use of Titanium Backup, may produce more consistant results:
Download installer
Download and install swype
At the enable step leave the installer and select swype as the input device
Reboot your phone
After Reboot, open the swype installer again
Select "Select Android keyboard" and change input back to android keyboard
Choose disable swype, go to applications and uninstall swype but NOT THE INSTALLER
Go back to the installer and generate license
This should put you through the download process again so just follow it and re-install swype
Once re-installed it should generate the license, but it still won't work
Reboot your phone again and all should work, enjoy!"

An incompatible app may work on your phone but not the way it should be. Go search for the apk file of the app and install it manually through sd card. 100% working is not guaranteed.

[APP][CM9][AOKP]Google Now for ARM7 Devices[UPDATED]

Requirements:
Follow the simple instructions here.
You MUST be rooted
You should be running a custom recovery like ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). I use CWM, so this guide is based on that.
Your device must be using ARMv7 CPU architecture. If you aren't sure what that is, check this thread.
You must have a file explorer that has root permissions. I use ES File Explorer, so this guide is based on that.
You need at least 60MB of system space for the full offline installation. (30MB for online only version) If you don't know how to check, simply download Titanium Backup from the market. It tells you right on the main screen.
If you are not a noob and know what to do already, please skip this. The permissions are listed at the bottom for easy reference, should you need them.
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Download whichever zip you want. If you need to save /system space, download the the smaller, online-only package, otherwise get the normal one for the full experience. There is also a version of each which removes the "double-take" condition of the app. This is where it loads the results twice. The one that loads the results twice formats search results properly on the first try, but does not auto launch some cards. The non-double-take version may not format some search results properly, but auto launches tasks such as navigation and texting. Choose whichever one you prefer. If you have questions, please don't quote this entire post. Simply edit out the part you have a question about.
Update: Each version listed has the full version and the Offline only version. Pick the one you want and flash it. If you aren't sure which one to use, or if this is too much information or is otherwise overwhelming for you, just flash the M7 version - Offline/Online, since it's the latest. Be sure to scroll down a bit and read about it, though.
Before doing anything, you need to make sure you have at least 60MB of free space on your /system partition for Offline/Online files and 30MB of free /system space for Online Only files.
Flashable ZIPs
[*]M7 - mikeyxda's version 7. This version improves on M6 by tweaking notifications to be more accurate and frequent. This version may use more battery. If you are using a Sense ROM, see the troubleshooting below for a hack to improve Google Now performance and battery efficiency.

[*]Inverted M7 - This is identical to the M7 files from above, except the colors are inverted, so that it has a black background instead of white, and white text instead of black. If you already have Google Now flashed, you can simply perform the update to this version.

How to:
- Move the file you picked to the root of your SD card. Don't put it in any folder. This just makes it easier to find.
- Reboot your device into recovery. See your device's specific instructions on how to do this if you are not sure. Google it for a faster answer.
- In CWM, navigate to "Install zip from SD" and select that.
- Next, highlight "Choose zip from SD card" and select it.
- Scroll down to the Google Now zip you loaded onto your SD card, then select it.
- Scroll down and select the option that says "Yes - Install Google Now....zip"
- Once it has flashed, go back to the main CWM menu and select "Reboot system now".
Double Checking:
- Let the ROM boot all the way, then fire up ES File Explorer (or whichever one you feel like using). We need to make sure a few permissions stuck (just in case).
- If you haven't used ES File Explorer before, open it, then hit menu.
Tap settings, then scroll all the way down.
Check the box that says "Up to Root" (pic).
Then check the box that says "Root Explorer"
Allow root access when the dialogue box for Superuser pops up.
After that, check off "Mount file system", then back out of the menu. (pic)
- Navigate to /system/usr/srec/ and find two folders named "config" and "en-US"
- Tap and hold on the "config" folder icon to bring up the options menu, then scroll down to Properties.
- Tap properties, then tap change and see if the check boxes match this picture.
- If it matches, leave it alone and head back to your home screen to enjoy using Google Now! If it doesn't match, change it so it does.
- Do the same thing for the "en-US" folder.
- Go into the settings menu for Google Now and set it up for your Google account and various other settings.
Now What?
So, you flashed Google Now. You're wondering what you can do with it, right? Well, thankfully, Killer-B has a handy little guide to get you up to speed on all the cool stuff Google Now can do as well as how to do it!
Commands & Now Cards For Google Now!!! Now Video, and custom widget
Troubleshooting
1.) The red mic screen won't display.
To fix this, press the normal mic within the Google Now app. While it is listening (after it beeps), press menu > refresh. Now you're at the red mic.
2.) Can't exit the Google Now app with the back button.
Use the Home button.
3.) Google Now Force Closes.
Make sure you have enough space on your /system partition before installing this. You need at least 60MB free for the Offline versions and 30MB free for the Online versions.
4.) Sports cards aren't showing up.
It won't add teams that aren't in season. American football is currently in preseason. Baseball, however, works perfectly fine.
5.) I want Google Now in another language than US English.
From the Google Now home screen with the cards, tap Menu, then Settings. Tap Voice, then Language and select the language you want recognized. The text of Google Now in searches and regular cards should mirror that of your system language.
6.) My phone exploded.
Have a muffin.
If, for some reason, you want to remove Google Now and return to how you were before, flash the following zip. It removes all Google Now files, and returns the original Google Search app and voice files, as well as sets permissions for the Search app.
Google Now to Google Search via Mediafire- 629.35KB /Hotfile mirror

In flashable zip contains velvet apk (google now itself) and many libs for it.

and R3 I've got FC everytime I launched the app, so revert back to M7 + updated
thanks for sharing mate

Not? Hmm..Try cleaning the game cache and try again..Cause it works for me..It shows if you put normal number

This method works for many games.
The reason it doesn't update on the leaderbords in Google Play is just simply because the game stores your score when you actually achieved it.
In other words; the shared preference value is only used for the dialog when you die.

[Q] Desire 820u has no Google Play.

I have Desire 820u CHinese version and it has only English and Chinese languages. No Goggle play and even does not allow to install Google play. Blocks it. I would like to install Google play. Is there any international ROM ?
Just unlocked it. But cannot flash any recovery.

What did you use? I have just used WinDroid Universal Toolkit to unlock bootloader, flash TWRP and root the phone. It worked, although it did take me a while to get it sorted due to issues with the drivers.
Everything seems to be working.
I hope it can help.
I have the same model, chinese version.
open HTC market, and look for GMS.... app.
download it, launch it, and when required enter the code *#*#.....
it will download somethink like 150M, your mobile will reboot, and at the end you'll find all google app in your mobile.
done.
without root, unlock or other
PLease can you write detaily ? What you said is unclear for me.
1. What do you mean with HTC Market ? I do not have HTC Market. It is called AppMarket and all in Chinese.
2. There are lots of GSM apps there and nothing worked in AppMarket.
Can you put url here ?

1) open AppMarket (ok, it's all in chinese)
2) in the search bar enter GMS
3) download and install GMS安装器 (the icon is the android robot, with some gapp icon inside). it is 0,17M
4)launche the app
5) you'll be prompted to remove the SD card before proceed. when done press OK
6) the app will download more or less 190M. be sure to be connected to a wifi
7) when done, you'll be required to enter the code *#*#442#*#* in the phone dialer
8) the phone will reboot in recovery and will install the play store and all gapps
9) the phone will reboot
don't forget to remove the SD card!!!!!!!
I hope this can help you.

Hi,
No official international rom so far (I doubt if it's planned, this phone's target is Asia)
Convenient solution is to flash GAPPS on top of existing software (without erase, just clear cache). Base package can be found at htcui[dot]com//androidrom/htc_820_rom [replace dot] - look for BillGates-li tread (you may need to use chrome with translation, as it's all Chinese). I'm sorry for confusion, but due to rookie rank, I'm not allowed to post external links.
Beware, each major upgrade (that flashes, not patches) will erase those GAPPS.
You'll need:
- customer recovery .img (can be found in orygnial android development section)
- fastboot (to flash i.e. install it)
- (suggested) original recovery.img (to enable future upgrades from HTC, that will download but not install on custom recovery)
Don't forget to backup before flashing - "just'n'case".

GMS App not working
Hi, just bought an HTC 820us, and just like everyone, no google apps. What's weird is that my phone is not even recognized by HTC sync manager, Windroid, HTC tool, fastboot under command line or any other program.
I'm unable to get this device's token in order to unlock the bootloader and install google apps, root, etc. When I try to install the GMS app I get an "App not installed error". If anyone finds a solution for this i'll be more than happy to donate to the cause.
Thanks for reading!

well, I have the same device since two days and I still try to install google play without success yet. it is possible at all or I can just use a limited version of this smartphone?
this is my first android phone and I have no idea what to do...any suggestions are welcome
found a solution
Ok, so after dealing with this phone for a while I found many solutions for the common problems of having an imported phone from china.
I found solutions for: Google Apps, Root, CallerID mismatch (Contacts not recognized when receiving calls due to chinese format of their CallerID)
- How to install Google Apps
1. Do a Factory Reset of your phone in the recovery screen (volume down+power button)
2. Download the GMS安装器 apk in your computer from google or any other source, make sure it's the apk with the android robot with the google apps logo in it. (app is no longer distributed in the included App Market)
3. Tranfer the downloaded file to a SD card (32gb maximum size or else it wont be recognized)
4. Insert the SD card in your phone
5. Using the "File Transfer" app in your phone copy the GMS app to the phone's "Download" folder.
6. Enable "Unknown Sources" in Settings/Security/Device Administration
7. Install the App, DON'T RUN IT. (Installation failed for me at first, a factory reset solved this)
8. Unmount the SD Card
9. Using the "File Transfer" app, install the GMS apk
10. Follow the instructions the GMS app is giving you, remember to remove the SD card before installation
11. The app will download something like 200mb, after that it will ask you to enter a code in your phone's dialer, enter it, it will automatically will reboot.
12. If you are lucky, the phone will have all Google Apps installed.
- Root
Once you have Google apps installed, it's easier for some root exploits to work.
1. Use Kingo Root for windows, it will try many methods of Rooting your device, the one that worked used an installation of various apps. Kingo root needed "USB Debugging" activated in Settings/Developer Options. If you don't have the Developer options menu enabled, please google it.
Once you have Root access it's easier to remove the Chinese apps that came with the phone.
- How to fix the CallerID not recognizing contacts problem
1. Download and Install "ES File Explorer" using the Google Play Store app.
2. Allow Root access when prompted to.
3. Head over to the "Tools" menu using the button in the upper left corner of the "ES File Explorer" app.
4. Enable "Root Explorer"
5. Click on "Root Explorer"
6. Click on "Mount R/W
7. Set "/system" to the RW value.
8. Press OK
9. Navigate to: Local, then /Device/system
10. Look for file named: "build.prop" and open it
11. Open it using ES Note Editor
12. Edit the file (using the 3 dots menu on the upper right corner)
13. Find the entry named: ro.phone.min_match=11 and change the number to 7.
14. Entry has to be named ro.phone.min_match=7
15. Press the return button, it will ask you to save changes, save them.
16. Just in case, remove the RW access mentioned in step 7.
17. Go to Settings/apps/all/ contacts and force stop, clear data
18. Do the same with the Contact Storage App.
19. Reboot Phone, cross your fingers and problem is solved.
I hope this helps a lot of people.
BTW: My phone is an HTC 820us, China Mobile.
get gapps...

I describe here how to get GAPPS for HTC D820US and maybe for any other "China-smartphone"
1_: Unmount the SD Card
2_: go to nduoa.com/package/detail/225445 with Chrome
3_: Right click on the page > translate to english
4_: Choose the green button next to blue one and above the other three green ones to download a small file called com.gmainstaller.apk
5_: install it
6_: this apk will download a file of abt. 246MB and needs following code in the dialer which pop-ups automatically [ code: * # * # 442 # * # * ]
7_: The device automatically restart and automatically install GAPPS, after the completion of all applications please check the list.
8_: if needed after all, download separately from "apkmirror.com" following two apk's: Google Play Services and Google Play Store.
tried on two HTC D820us and works like a charm
