[Q] Rooting help - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I'm gonna come with a really noobish question I gues...
I have an HTC Desire that I want to root, it has HBoot 0.92 and OTA Froyo 2.2, I don't think this is a problem anymore though?
Now, I believe my phone is unbranded/unlocked - any way to check?
And what radio would I need to use? I'm from denmark and the tele company is called Telia... Does it matter?
And since I'm from denmark, I can't buy any paid apps off the market, and it pisses me off, rooting will fix that right?
I'd like to use the OpenDesire ROM. But it's a bit confusing with all kinds of topics refering to eachother, and the "Ultimate guide on rooting" says that I need HBoot 0.80 and a current rom of 1.15 (or something like that), I have 2.2 >.<
Thanks in advance.

[Q] HTC Desire noob could do with friendly assistance (regards root, 2.2)

Hey guys,
Trying to figure out whats going to be best for me. Im currently on 2.1, which is virgin branded (i presume, as thats what the boot logo is after the htc logo). Now, Im tempted to root it and upgrade to 2.2 froyo (as there are now rooted roms).
My Hboot is 0.75.0000 and radio is 4.05.00.11 but strangely at the top it says
" BRAVO UNKNOWN SHIP S-ON " which is where i would assume it says o2, Orange etc. Will i need to goldkey an sd card still, or is this rom a WWE stock htc rom?
Also, could anyone hold my hand through the whole root-install new ROM process? I've read through the posts on here, and although I am not exactly computer illiterate, it does seem a little daunting, and as this Desire cost me £500 sim free(from CEX) when it came out, I'm a little scared of bricking it, although it is insured .....
Last question is, with the 2.2 Rooted Froyo releases that are currently out, which is best? I want all the latest official features (wifi n, wifi tether, 720p etc) but a quick running phone with nice subtle extras.
Cheers guys, sorry for being a bit of a noob here, but I've ended up reading myself into confusion

Welcome.
The Short answer is ; if you don't feel comfortable then don't do the rooting process. It has been simplified significantly most recently but things still can go wrong. If you can wait the best option for you is to wait until your carrier releases an update. Still not foolproof but less likely to get you in hot water.
The Long answer is that there are plenty of guides around both here and at Modaco. If you do get in trouble I guess you can ask on the forum.
Good Luck

[Q] Unbranding O2 Desire

Hi all,
Feel free to shoot me down, send me to a thread or whatever
I've just bought a HTC Desire on O2 PAYG to replace my contract HD2. It is branded and locked to O2 (i'm on O2 so fine) but I would like to get the 2.2 update OTA for the generic ROMS. After reading A LOT of information on different sites I am confused as to whether I actually need to Root my phone or not to get a generic ROM?
If I do, my next problem is I have HBOOT 0.83 which doesn't seem rootable at the moment
Thank for your help/comments.
I'm in the same position.
0.83 is rootable by using unrevoked3, but it seems that you cannot flash any custom ROMs or debrand with it. At the moment there doesn't seem to be any safe option. You can downgrade HBOOT to 0.80, but this seems to break the phone's display (which may be recoverable, but it looks more than a bit risky).
One possibility is this - a recent RUU on shipped-roms (RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_T2_Radio_32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe) seems to contain HBOOT 0.83, so may work with a goldcard to debrand the phone, since O2's software is lower (1.20.207.3 I think). If that's successful it might be possible it might be possible to apply the OTA update (but this will make the phone unrootable).
Great! Now we have a fourth thread about rooting HBOOT 0.83!

[Q] Rooting Questions

Hey, I'm gonna come with a really noobish question I gues... I've read alot of guides and such about this, but I still don't find anything that states it clearly, and it can get kinda confusing.

Go to Settings>About phone>Software information
If your phone has S/W 2.09.405.8 then you're on a generic Desire - which is a good thing!!
Next is to check the box specification - if it says you've got a 3.7" AMOLED screen then you can downgrade the HBOOT and root your phone. If it doesn't say AMOLED then you've got a bit more work involved and the information you need is in the ROM Development forum
Hey, thanks for the quick reply!
I got everything you said.
So that means I can just use Unrevoked?
And how about the market? That's one of the main reasons for me to root, so that I'd be able to access the full market?
Bump? Or something
there's no way to root a Desire with the Bootloader HBoot 0.92 known yet, which you got after you've upgraded to Android 2.2.
This means you have to downgrade the bootloader first, root it with unrevoked, ...
There are several guides out there.
But the important thing is, that you must downgrade the Bootloader in order to root your device.

Downgrade from .83 HBOOT to .80 Telstra Next G Desire.

Hi, Im new to here (to posting), so I apologise if this has been asked before.
I have a Desire that has Next G software on it and I would like to get 2.2 Froyo without any of the Telstra stuff on it.
For some reason I cant root it and I have been looking at a way to downgrade it. Can i ask what are your opinions of the most effective way to do that?
I have been looking and I can not find a guide that is specific for Telstra handsets at how to downgrade them so I can get Froyo on them.
Thanks

Hi
I have a Telstra desire and was able to root with HBOOT 0.75 and also with 0.83. I think your problem may be with rooting rather than with HBOOT.
Try the whirlpool forums for Australian specific advice.
Ben
I can't remember exactly what my telstra desire had but I remember I had to use the wrong version for the boot software that was installed as standard.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thanks, I will look into that.

[Q] How to know if my phone "shipped" with Gingerbread

I am interested in unlocking my Orange branded Desire HD. The AMT looks helpful but I need to downgrade to 1.32. I found some instructions for this but the disclaimer at the top bothers me.
DO NOT USE THIS IF YOUR PHONE CAME WITH GINGERBREAD.

(it bricks the phone if your phone came pre-installed). Now I have two issues with this:
1) I did not care about android when I got it in February 2011 (the date probably means NOT gingerbread)
2) I sent it back to HTC in December 2011 because the GPS and proximity sensor were faulty. It came back working and the job sheet said something like the circuit board had been replaced, but like a n00b I could not find it when I searched when I realised how important it might be.
It came back with the same IMEI, if that helps.
So here is the question:
How can I tell if my Desire HD is a "shipped gingerbread" device.
I have root, ENG S-OFF, know how to run adb and fastboot but not much more than that.
I Guess Ur Using The Froyo Android 2.2 U Can Go To Settings,About Phone and check android version if its 2.2 then its froyo if 2.3 its gingerbread but in my opinion its froyo since you've routed it etc
Yes, sorry, I meant to say I am on Absolution 3.6, which is gingerbread, but what I'm running now doesn't tell me whether I'll be bricked if I downgrade.
i didnt get why u want to downgrade and downgrade to what?
As I say...

No Cz Htc Have Made A Security For The gingerbread update for the dhd so it cant be rooted u will have to downgrade it to froyo to gain root
1) no need to go.through all this trouble. You are allready sim unlocked. All the rooting methods used gfree Wichita along with soff gives you simunlock aswell
2) GB. Is rootable using ace hack kit no need to downgrade
Edit I should add. Their is no.need to downgrade unless your phone is on the newer sense 3.0
