ADW.Launcher
So, after trying out a few Home Launchers, I have settled upon ADW.Launcher. I must admit, I didn't think anything would be able to replace Helix Launcher, but ADW has all of the speed, eye candy, tweaks, and features that I am loving right now! I also love the feature of Tag Home, which has labels for your different apps when you open the drawer, so I do wish it had that. But aside from that one feature, everything else on ADW OWNS!!!
- It can have up to 7 screens (9 would be great though).
- You can hit nexus style buttons on the bottom to flip to the next screen, instead of sliding with your thumb across the screens (which sometimes hits icons and launches them instead of sliding, I guess because our screens aren't the most sensitive anymore - always happened to me, so I appreciated this navigation option. Does anyone else have this problem? Or needing to swipe a few times to get it to go to the next screen?).
- Since we don't have multitouch, we can't pinch-to-zoom out on our home screen to preview all of our screens. ADW overcomes this via TWO Preview methods:
Method 1: When you hit the home button from any of the screens, or...
Method 2: You can preview JUST the screens to the left or right of whichever screen you are on at the moment, by holding down on the nexus style buttons on the bottom-left or bottom-right, flanking the dock
- The animation of the screens sliding left and right looks awesome.
- You can choose either Galaxy Spica S style navigation of your apps, or the 3-D Fly-In (which I prefer), when you open the drawer. Unfortunately, no option for just sliding the drawer up I don't think.
- You can choose which of your 7 screens (or 5 or 3, whatever) you want to be your "Home" screen (very cool!).
- Customizability:
-you can adjust the speed that you change screens
-you can adjust the "overshoot"
-you can adjust the speed of the Fly-In when opening drawer
-you can adjust the tint of the docked icons
-you can adjust the size of the docked icons
-you can hide the app titles
-you can show or hide the background screens when apps or the app drawer is open, and also adjust the shading of them
-You can customize almost everything!!!
- There are still more features that I haven't discovered yet
I found the creator's thread here, he's an xda member of course
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645550
And a Youtube video here of many of the customizable features:

I just installed ADW.Launcher from the Marketplace.
Please feel free to leave your Home Launcher reviews in this thread if you like! Tell us why you have chosen what you have, and which features are particularly important to you and why. Hopefully this will help people or newbies to be able to weed out the less useful or non-working launchers. Maybe I'll start a poll too
Reserved. Just because I've always wanted to be in a position where I can "reserve" posts like devs lol.
Thanks for the post. Id like to see some reviews of the other launchers in this thread.

Just tried it out for myself. Great launcher. The only thing I miss from Helix is the double tap to preview. The button isnt super hard though. ill have to make my way to the dev to suggest

Which launcher are you talking about? If it's Launcher Pro, then yeah, I agree with you, that's why I went back to Helix, and since then have stuck with ADW. I love the preview!!
helix had preview with double tap on background. preview does rock
... I have flashed a few roms that use ADW as the default home. I have seen a few screen shots that show a shortcut bar that contains 4 shorcuts instead of 2. How can I do that? I have tried everything I can think of the adw settings and cant figure it out. Thank you in advance.
There is a launcherpro option that makes it looks like that I tihnk it's called froyo wide dock background. u gotta use launcherpro tho
Well, more precisely, you first need to enable LAB/RAB, and I think also the Secondary Action Buttons. Then, you'll be able to simply drag an app shortcut to those locations.
I've tried Google without any luck..so I'm guessing this is a no..but I'm trying to find an app that disables tilt in certain situations only. I know I can disable tilt thru the settings..but that disables tilt EVERYWHERE. I'm just looking to disable tilt on my homescreen..while still being able to tilt while browsing Interwebz and whatnot. Seems like it should be an easy enough function..considering BB's have an app for it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok 1 - Android is not BlackBerry. Not even on the same level as one another, so just get that out of your head.
Second off, wtf do you mean on your homescreen? Sense doesn't turn landscape unless you changed the Skin to one built with landscape. Just switch it to the stock HTC skin, problem solved, it never goes landscape unless you open the keyboard.
If you're not using Sense (CM 6.1 or something) check the settings, as it usually has a way to disable homescreen rotation in their own personal settings.
Try CM6. It has the option for a custom power control widget to be embedded into the statusbar. You can put a toggle for rotation too. You loose the sense home and widgets though, but imo stock > sense. Or you could try quickdesk and put a rotation toggle widget on it.

Orly? Android isn't Blackberry? Good to know.
So lets begin...in order to "hide" all the bunk apps because I wasn't rooted, flashed, s-offed etc yet (all the things necessary to remove said apps) I had to download Launcher Pro (which was highly recommended). As soon as this was done..then yes..I was no longer able to use stock Sense. So now..my homescreen always tilts on me..which bugs the **** outta me. Could I just go back to stock Sense? Sure I could..but I'd rather have what should be a basic app to allow me to pick and choose where and when I'd like my screen to tilt. And I've grown to like how my homescreen looks over the stock look. Yes..I can disable autotilt in the settings..but then I can't even tilt the screen into landscape for the browser. So maybe I'm missing something here that someone else can point out..

I am on a stock ROM myself still, but I know that Cyanogen has a lot of customisation options. I wonder if it's worth asking in the CM thread over on the G2 side (because the DZ one is dead) out whether that has options that might help you ?
You want to disable "rotation" all over your phone AND to be able to use the browser in Landscape mode.
If that is the only thing you want, you can set your browser to "landscape mode only"
Now if you have a longer list of requirements on what apps get permisions to rotate the screen etc, I think you may bigger problems

there was nothing offensive or said with an attitude in this post. it was only til you noobs came on here with misplaced android pride. he didnt compare berrys to droids. he simply said they have an app for it.
this is a great question. the tilt function seems almost too sensitive. it would be great to maybe tweak it somehow to make it so you really have to hold the phone sideways....instead of slightly tilt the phone. an app to block it in certain situations is good but i feel that id have to micro manage too much to specify every single situaiton id want tilt or not.
for the record... i'm am a die hard android user and his post did not push my buttons at all. this post is very useful.
ADW launcher has an option in system preferences for home screen orientation.
Just change it from auto to portrait, that's what I did.

Wow no one answered your question. Well here it is, when you are on the home screen hit the Menu - Behavior Settings and uncheck Enable Auto-Rotation.
That will disable auto rotation on the home screen. Now go into Settings - Display and make sure Auto-rotate screen is checked. This way you will be able to but your screen into landscape mode when surfing the web or using apps that auto rotate. Now if you want to be able to choose specific apps, that I have no knowledge of doing. Hope this helps.

Tasker (on the Market) can be set up to enable/disable auto-rotation on many different triggers, like when a certain app is launched. Plus it can do a lot more that that! Check it out I think it's well worth the money.

Excellent.
Glad I could help. I know I was having the same issue at one point in time and it was very annoying. I didn't want to give up on Launcher Pro because the widgets are awesome and it gave me "sense" on my stock android! If you haven't played with Launcher Pro Plus, you should give it a whirl. The widgets that are unlocked with it are definitely top notch.

The crazy thing is I actually NEVER played with ADW, yet I keep hearing how really good it is. So good in fact, that some custom ROMS have it built in. Would you recommend it?

Not only those but what about the Friendstream widget? It is damn near an exact replica of the sense widget. I also like how when you use the picture frame widget, you can resize it. That feature is only available on LPP not LP.

New home launcher ADW EX. Its just adw with a few more customizations. It's on the market.
Anyone using it yet? I just bought it and its amazing! Everybody post pics of your launcher and show off your personal taste!
If you experience any stutter or freeze issue its probably a memory leak caused by one of your widgets, a quick adw reset will fix it. Just go to the menu scroll down and adw reset.
Anybody with suggestions should email the dev from the market place. He replies quite quick and is open to suggestions.

just finished playing around with it for a bit and all i gotta say is...wow. animations switching screens are so sleek and dont lag at all on my CM6.1.1. no FC's or anything. loving it so far. havent defaulted it yet, still trying to see if i truly want it as my default. only thing i wish it had right now is swipe gestures for each dockbar icon (not just the main swipe up/swipe down gestures) because on launcher pro i have 5 different gestures, particularly: quick compose for chomp and screen off and lock because i'd rather quickly swipe up than long press the search button. unfortunately i can't do that to the dockbar in ADW but instead i've made the single swipe up gesture for screen off and lock, and long press search as quick compose. also in launcherpro i had a swipe gesture for battery use shortcut in settings and in ADW i just decided to make a shortcut for it on the desktop. also miss the launcherpro facebook widget but i can live without it.
in conclusion, this launcher is absolutely amazing so far, battery drained pretty quickly but i can't tell if thats just cuz i was literally messing around with it constantly, even to the point where i would just play around with the screen transition animation for days haha or if its actually a battery drainer. i guess we'll see if it really drains a lot of battery tomorrow, assuming i can show some self control with playing with the screen animations

For those of you interested, if you are upgrading from the "old" ADW, you can restore your old settings by backing up the current launcher and settings config, an use Astro or any explorer to rename adw_settings.xml and adw_launcher.db to adw_EX_settings.xml and adw_EX_launcher.db. Next you can import them in ADW Ex. Both files are in the root of the SD card. At least saves the trouble to figure out again what your original settings were and background etc...
I am a bit dissapointed that such a popular launcher doesn't recognise you were running a previous version and offers the option to import old settings on first startup. Still it is the best launcher IMHO. The new transition effects are cool!

ADW ex is very nice but settings are not very intuitive and are not very user friendly. Now, of course, this a first release and I'm sure things will be cleaned up in updates. Launcher should not hijack "Settings" shortcutin the menu neither.

You can still set the app drawer background to transparent, it just won't work with Vertical 4D app drawer style.
Just set the background color bar all the way to the left.

I don't use themes so I'm not sure if or how they affect settings. Did you try ADW Settings > UI Settings > Drawer Settings > Background color - slide the slider all the way to the left. (a bit late as EuroSpeed beat me to it. This is what happens when I answer a phone call in the middle of replying and get distracted)
My First impression
I got this last night and so far I like it very much. The "vertical old" App drawer style is much snappier. It doesn't lag like the ADW built in to CM 6.1.1 even though I have the background transparent and my live wallpaper running just as I did on the built in version. There are some things that I don't like such as the fact that it has removed the phone settings from the menu button and placed them under the ADW settings. Also, I have the Home button binding set to: Move to default desktop/show previews. If you start at the default desktop, go to settings and press the home button to return home it automatically goes to the previews instead of the default desktop and then the previews. Not a big deal but slightly annoying- I'm sure it will be addressed in an update. Overall, I really like this.
FOR THE USERS WHO JUST WANT TO SEE THE VIDEO DEMO:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZHIH7F0Z4g
Have you had an LG phone like the BL-40 Chocolate or the KP-500 cookie before with that cool 3d cube thingy, and wish you had the same for your android phone? Well, here's something that closely resembles that.
The chocolate had 2 home screens, and the wallpaper can be set differently for the two screens. When i bought the galaxy s, my very first android phone, i hoped that it had a similar thing, only now with 7 home screens to fill widgets with. Sadly, it didn't come with that feature (although the live wallpapers was a cool alternative).
And then i came across MultiPicture Live Wallpaper (free on the market) that let me set a different picture for each homescreen. AND it came with some AWESOME screen transitions. Also, you are not limited to just one picture, you can set a whole album to be shuffled for each homescreen. Cool yeah?
So i was impressed with that. Then I saw that launcher pro was having an update. In the newest version, Fede included some cool transition effects so I immediately updated and tried it out.
I don't know if it was fate or what, but the transition effects of the live wallpaper and launcher pro really work great together. Now my phone looks cooler than before!
IMPORTANT THINGS TO TAKE NOTE BEFORE TRYING THIS OUT:
Scrolling speed is different for the live wallpaper and the launcher, so i recommend playing with the minimum scrolling speed setting of launcher pro (launcher pro settings > advanced settings > minimum scrolling speed). If you find the wallpaper lagging behind your widgets/shortcuts, try setting the scroll speed to faster speed until they are in sync when scrolling.
IF MULTIPICTURE LIVE WALLPAPER FROM THE MARKET DOESN'T WORK AS IT SHOULD, OR IF IT LAGS TRY THIS OLD VERSION THAT I HAVE.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16398746/Apps Backup/MultiPicture Live Wallpaper.0.4.8.apk
If this solves your problem good for you. If it doesn't, well it sucks to be you. LOL

If it's lagging, here are a few tips you could try.
1. Reduce pictures to your screen's size.. My screen is 800x480 so I resized my pictures to that size.. The file size of the picture may have an impact on the performance of the live wallpaper, so keeping it as small as possible may help speed things up..
2. Swipe your finger as slow and as short as possible.. I don't remember if I did this in the video, but whenever I swipe my finger, I do it slowly and my finger touches the screen for about half an inch.. This helps slow things down by registering a slow homescreen swipe..
3. Try less hardware intensive but visually unimpressive transitions.. My personal favorites are wipe, card and swap.. Wipe is the fastest for me..
4. Contact the developer and see if you could help out.. Im not the developer of the live wallpaper so I can't really do anything to improve it from a programmer's point of view..

BE SURE TO UNCHECK THE DISABLE WALLPAPER SCROLLING OPTION IN LAUNCHER PRO. go to launcher pro settings > appearance settings > disable wallpaper scrolling. Naturally if you leave that setting on, your wallpaper won't scroll.
YOU DON'T NEED TO USE BOTH THE LAUNCHER AND THE LIVE WALLPAPER. You can use a different Launcher on MPLW, and a different Wallpaper on Launcher Pro. But do take note that you can't have the launcher transition effects in a different launcher, and the Live Wallpaper transition effects in the live wallpaper..

Here's how to create the same setup
1. Download launcher pro. It's free and i believe the transition effects come with the free version.
2. Customize to your hearts content. Place widgets, shortcuts, etc just fill the homescreen with content so that you can see the effect.
3. Select transition effect. Press the context menu button while on your homescreen > preferences > homescreen settings > transition effect.
4. Download Multipicture Live Wallpaper and set it as your wallpaper
5. Set a picture for each homescreen. You can even set a whole folder to shuffle pictures from.
6. Set the transition effect that you want to go with your launcher pro transition effect. Press the context menu while on your homescreen>wallpaper>configure.
7. Enjoy!
Tip - go to launcher pro settings > advanced settings > minimum scrolling speed, then set it to 0.. it will slower the swipe speed (provided that you swiped your finger slowly as well)
Transition effects that go nicely with each other as shown in the video:
LP - Cube
MPLW - Cube
LP - Scale
MPLW - Swap
LP - Flip
MPLW - Swing
Not shown in video:
LP - Cube
MPLW - Wipe
LP - Rotation
MPLW - Card

I heard darky v9 was buggy, that's why I settled for v8.1 ay the moment.. Anyway, I'm just your average android user, not a dev or anything but I'll try to help you out as much as I can..

I'm on darky 9,0 Voodoo same as you and all works perfect. Maybe You have some options on check LP>Appearance Settings> disable wallpaper scrolling I think that option must be unchecked
I have this on and MPLW dasn't work
*FYI* You can use this with other launchers or if you can't find the setting inside Launcher Pro to set the transition (I HAD THIS PROBLEM THE SECOND TIME AROUND) This guide will help you. If anybody is using a different launcher like me I use ADW EX you might not be able to see the transition setting inside the launcher settings. You can still set this transition. While setting multipicture live wallpaper you can go into the settings before you actually save the wallpaper, scroll down to Drawing Settings and select your desired transition under Transition Type.
Before exiting I go into each individual screen setting for example Screen 1 Settings and click on Type of Screen then select Single Picture, Select desired image from gallery and then continue to do the same for Screen 2 Settings untill I have done all of my home screen wallpapers *BE SURE TO HAVE SCROLLABLE WALLPAPER ACTIVE IN YOUR SETTINGS ELSE YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO USE MULTIPICTURE WALLPAPER ****OP you might want to place all of this information in your 1st post***
Amazing! wow, thank you for sharing.. love it.. Thank you!

Well technically it is a live wallpaper, and live wallpapers are not tied to a launcher (at lest MPLW isn't) so yeah, you can use it with other launchers. But the point of this post was to show that the new Launcher Pro version's new feature are these transition effects, and those new effects go pretty well with the transition effects in MPLW..

It makes it seem like you need to use LP due to the nature of your original post. I was just clarifying it for the interested parties.
I have Darky`s v9.0 and it works great. Thanks
I installed the older version and it works fine now.
It loses the settings though if the phone is switched off and back on.
Ive set 5 different wallpapers to 5 different homescreens, disabled scrolling, but my wall paper isnt switching when i cange home screens, with or with out transition effect aplied in either mplw, or launcher pro plus . any ideas???
nvm .......

That was a typo. You should leave the disable wallpaper scrolling option unchecked.. Sorry about that, I corrected the instructions..
