[Q] Is there a way to quickly switch between input languages? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As per the title.
I know I can press the gear key on the keyboard, and then switch the input language from the Touch Input Settings menu, but as I find myself switching often, this is kind of a pain.
Isn't there a faster way of doing this? Maybe a better, third party keyboard?
Thanks!

The default HTC Froyo keyboard maybe?

What if am I on TELUS and they haven't yet released their froyo update

HTC IME question (request without arrows)

Even without holding the Evo, I can go ahead and imagine that i'd prefer a landscape keyboard without the arrows to the right that htc_ime includes with the EVO. Being unfamiliar with sense, will the standard android keyboard be available to be set as default? or will the desire keyboard be available to flash over the existing one? Thanks
I have always disliked the arrows too. Sometimes they are hit by accident while typing. It's quite annoying. And this was on my HD2.
However I will probably use better keyboard.

How do I change keyboards?

This is getting annoying!
I've installed Smart Keyboard PRO, and I am unable to select this as the default keyboard.
Usually I long press in a text box to select an alternative keyboard but it is not working. Any ideas?
Go into settings, language and keyboard to activate your other keyboard.
Then when using the normal keyboard you can swipe down from status bar and select input method.
Hope this makes sense.

i had already activated but didn't know to swipe down!
thanks a million
for you
First, install the keyboard and enable it in keyboard settings (slide to "on").
Second, when you are actually typing in a textbox of some sort, there should be a keyboard notification up at the top of the screen - if you select it, it will let you choose input, and you can select which keyboard to use.
Smart Keyboard Pro is fantastic for typing but horrible for predicting/fixing mistakes
Don`t forget to push thanks
Just curious while we're at this subject, I find the stock HTC keyboard in HOX to be weak in predicting as well. Have seen Galaxy Nexus's stock ICS keyboard instead and would prefer that.
Is there a way I can use the stock ICS keyboard on HOX? If yes, how can I download the stock ICS keyboard and install for use?

how do I switch between keyboards

As the question says really.
On my desire, a long press in the type area would bring up the menu to switch keyboards between say swype, stock and swiftkey. How do I do that on the One X?
In settings-> language and keyboard enable the keyboard(s) you want to use then go to a text field and pull down the notification bar and select the input method switcher.
brilliant, thanks
you can also swipe left/right within the keyboard to switch.

changing input method on the fly

Is there anyway to change inputs methods on the fly so to speak? in my galaxy and galaxy s2 a long press would being up a menu and u would be able 2 change the input method by that but i have noticed that on the gs3 it doesnt give you that option. am i just missing something in the settings? the main reason i ask is b/c i manly use swype but sometimes with longer messages ill use the better keyboard and its kind of a hassle 2 have 2 go into settings and change it back and forth. thank you
I'm on stock S3 and also mainly using swype. I've noticed that while the swype keyboard is open, you can change the input method by pulling down on the notification bar. It's not as convenient as simply holding a button but since you're already texting and the keyboard is open, it's only an extra step to access on the fly.

thank you for that info, sewhuy! Adding that it indeed is there in the notification area no matter what your default keyboard is. I'm now doing this to change between SwiftKey and LastPass.....it's things like this that i hope they really focus on and improve in key lime pie .....long press in the text box indeed would be the best solution.
This Rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748818
has the mod that allows you to change input methods on the fly...
The rom is awesome, please check it out!

Tab S4 physical keyboard problem

Hey guys,
I bought this tablet yesterday along with the official case with keyboard. The keyboard has the Portuguese Layout, however everytime I press special characters such as "รง", Android show me completely different characters. I made sure that Portuguese is the default language for everything in Settings.
Did anyone have this problem? Is there any way I can remap the keyboard?
Thanks
If you want to change the language to Portuguese Br, or other go in Settings, Language and input, physical keyboard and change it from Portuguese to Brazilian.
You'll be able to use the keyboard by going on the Physical Keyboard settings and define the keyboard layout as English International. However, I still could not get the ' to work with c, a and e.
Hi guys,
Since I updated the tablet to Android 9, I'm no longer able to switch between keyboards when the physical keyboard is paired. Is anyone else facing this issue? In Dex mode, the issue is even worse, as none of the other keyboards I have installed in my system is available!
Update: If the option "keyboard on screen" in the keyboard menu is checked, I'm able to switch between them. One issue less. Still need to understand why Dex is no longer allowing other keyboards to run (they are stated as "unavailable" for Dex mode).
Were you ever able to resolve the issue? I just got my S4 and keyboard and this is driving me crazy

No problem in either mode as long as you set the keyboard layout correctly. For me it's Spanish because mine is a Spanish keyboard
