As the question says really.
On my desire, a long press in the type area would bring up the menu to switch keyboards between say swype, stock and swiftkey. How do I do that on the One X?
In settings-> language and keyboard enable the keyboard(s) you want to use then go to a text field and pull down the notification bar and select the input method switcher.
brilliant, thanks
you can also swipe left/right within the keyboard to switch.

I'm coming from a phone with a trackball... a MyTouch 3G that I had kept current thanks to CyanogenMod. This is much better lol.
I used that trackball though, all the time, mostly for selecting text that I'd screwed up... or to move the cursor between words where I wanted to add a sentence. But sometimes was nice too, for moving to the next form field, or scrolling focus to the "submit" button, etc.
I'm pretty happy with my Swiftkey X keyboard - it's got an option to enable arrow keys. I'm surprised Swype doesn't? I'm used to Swype and really would like to use that.
So my question is twofold:
Any other good keyboards with either a simulated trackpad or arrow keys?
and/or...
How do you live without it? I can adapt if I know the tricks.

Hackers keyboard is nice. Has the four arrows and a number row. Plus you can enlarge or reduce the keys.
The best solution I have found so far is an app called GameKeyboard. The dpad simulates the repeated keypress of a held down arrow key, or joystick (which is essential for many games).
However, it has bugs, and the qwerty mode is slow (you swipe horizontally across the keyboard to switch between gamepad mode and keyboard mode). I enable it specifically for games, and then switch back to my main keyboard (i.e. swype) for everything else.
Here's a link:

in swype there is an arrow option. swype from the swype/option button to the sym/123 button and a arrow keypad comes up. also from sym/123 button to "f" brings up a number pad.
thumb keyboard has arrows
Hey there,
I was used to changing the keyboard easily by long-pressing any text-input possible screen area and then selecting the desired keyboard.
Now I have to go all the way to the settings and change the default keyboard to the one i want to use at the time.
Is there any way to change this in a smoother way?
Cheers

Some keyboards support long pressing space (i think), other way is to select a text field and then pull down notification bar and select the "select input method" there.
/Edit:
Stock Keyboard support longpressing space, SwiftKey X does not

Is there anyway to change inputs methods on the fly so to speak? in my galaxy and galaxy s2 a long press would being up a menu and u would be able 2 change the input method by that but i have noticed that on the gs3 it doesnt give you that option. am i just missing something in the settings? the main reason i ask is b/c i manly use swype but sometimes with longer messages ill use the better keyboard and its kind of a hassle 2 have 2 go into settings and change it back and forth. thank you
I'm on stock S3 and also mainly using swype. I've noticed that while the swype keyboard is open, you can change the input method by pulling down on the notification bar. It's not as convenient as simply holding a button but since you're already texting and the keyboard is open, it's only an extra step to access on the fly.

thank you for that info, sewhuy! Adding that it indeed is there in the notification area no matter what your default keyboard is. I'm now doing this to change between SwiftKey and LastPass.....it's things like this that i hope they really focus on and improve in key lime pie .....long press in the text box indeed would be the best solution.
This Rom, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748818
has the mod that allows you to change input methods on the fly...
The rom is awesome, please check it out!
Nexus 7 2013 & 4.4.4
Have installed Hacker's keyboard & prefer it as it is more like a real keyboard with a numeric top row & arrow keys & escape key. Cannot change the default keyboard even if the settings claim that it did; even disabled the Google keyboard & it still won't be done.
With the Google keyboard, even changed the advanced setting to allow different input method & selected Hacker keyboard BUT the Google keyboard remain stuck.
Interesting thing is that I have the System Panel installed as the task manager; the SP showed/named the Google keyboard as an ASUS keyboard! Gather it is the same but does the name change mean that the ASUS keyboard is hard coded somewhere?
Read popup keys can't be done on the tablet but I just want to use the Hacker's keyboard if it can be done on the Nexus 7. Am using the Hacker's keyboard on 3 other tablets.......
I use Hacker's Keyboard on my Nexus 7 with no problems. Make sure that it's selected as your default input method, and tap-and-hold in a text input area so the Input Method box pops up, then select Hacker's Keyboard.

THANKS! I've only used the Hacker's keyboard in landscape mode on the Tab 2 & the A700 & Nook HD+ have a larger screen so that the numeric keys showed up in portrait mode. Your reply of using a keypress worked with doing it on the keyboard as it popped up the numerics & when in the numerics a long keypress popped up what one would get when doing a shift+numeric key as in the "&".
Guess I didn't try hard enough & should have tried both portrait & landscape mode for keyboard visualization. I am at that age that is quite cluttered & maybe solidified so ideas have a hard time to sink in.
Hi All,
When I use Navigation Gesture instead of Nav Bar, the "switch Keyboard" Button is also gone,.
I use Gboard and another third party input, butnow find it very hard to switch around, have to go all the way to setting --languages--
just wondering is there a shortcut / Gesture for switch keyboard?
Thanks in advance
Hi @sd1577956,
I came up against the same issue with my 6T when using Navigation gestures as opposed to either the Android 8 (Oreo) or 9 (Pie) Navigation Bar.
I found that when I tap into an an area that I can enter text and the keyboard appears, a new notification also appears that if I tap it, allows me to switch between keyboards.
Some keyboards (like the native Gboard), also allow you to switch keyboards by long pressing the space bar (but this is not supported universally by third party keyboards in my experience).
I hope that helps,
