ROMs, Kernals, & Battery usage - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been running SkyRaider 2.5.2 Vanilla for a couple days, now. Test drove some Hydra Kernals and didn't find one that didn't either lock me up or eat my battery alive for some reason. Did the battery-reset thing yesterday, just to make sure THAT part was okay. This morning I was down to 73% within an hour of unplugging (I did my usual procedure of unplugging in the morning, checking email and whatever, then plugging back in while getting ready for work: green light/100% when I walked out the door).
Next up is SR Sense with the modified stock kernal. I'm not looking for anything extraordinary in battery life, but I sure don't want to go BACKWARDS.
Anybody have any thoughts on ROMs / kernals they'd like to share?
(Mods: if this is in the wrong forum, I apologize. Feel free to move. Just seemed like development issues to me.)

Hydra undervolt kernels work fine.
This needs to be in general...like half the other threads on this forum..

Hehe . . . Yes! It seems to be a running "theme" around here. Look, now the thread qualifies for themes :|
Only stock processor scaling is going to be decently fast and not too heavy on the battery.

Opinion on great rom/kernel with good battery??

So I am looking to change roms. I am on BS 1.8 now and sick of the whole mess of them only using their forum and having to pay to get files, so I am looking to switch.
What rom/kernel are you all using that's giving you great battery life, high quad scores? Please post your configurations, so I can make a decision. Oh, no CM6...I like Sense.
I have been looking at
Virus Anthrax
Calkulin's EViO 2
Frost
Burnt Droid
Still happily rocking my Fresh 3.3.0.1
I donated to Damage, but he seemed to release a rom then take a 3 month vacation.
I donated to Fresh to get the beta stuff, but his roms are just rock solid, great battery life, fast, and I just don't have to mess with it. I did flash a new taskbar and back to standard rosie.
I am not a fan of the donation stuff. I can understand why they do it, but it seems to contradict the community. I have a lot of respect for these guys for what they do, I know it takes a lot of time. But its a hobby they choose to get into. They make a decent product, get some people following them, then they want to make it their job and get paid for stuff just doesn't seem right to me.
I still swear by Fresh(have since the beginning) enough to donate to him. I decided to switch it up for fun and now im on myn's Warm twopointtwo....Its just as solid, smooth, and battery efficient as Fresh but to me looks sexier and has beautiful transitions.
Ex-BSer here. I'm test driving myn with King's #9 kernel. I like so far. I am looking forward to RLS2.
the funny thing about sense based roms. There isnt a ton visible differences between them. a lot of it is behind the scene tweaks. and even all those are usually very minor differences in performance.
Basically what i am saying is it is all a personal preference. I have literally used every rom currently out for evo on this forum. most of them preform comparable real world (one may get a slightly higher bench blah blah.) there are a few "minor" differences between most of the up to date roms that may sway you but over all i would be willing to bet most people wouldnt be able to tell a difference in actual use of most of the sense roms (though i am sure many will claim otherwise i am sure but placebos work for a reason and the general public think the iphone is the best phone for a reason and none of which because it is true)
AOSP is different however as it doesnt pertain to this post wont go there. as far as the look of the gui if you look through the themes section you can normally find a comparable look to go with any rom (ie a lot of them use manups) so i normally tell people instead of asking to just play with them and see what they feel works best for them. Everyone will tell you there favorite rom is the best and will swear by it many having never tried the others. SO try the big ones and see which one you like is normally best some of the big sense based ones are
Virus, Fresh, Evio, warm twopointtwo, DC(though it is fading fast since it is getting) pretty out of date)
all fo these with proper settings gave me pretty good battery life and performance with both kings and netarchy kernels.
If i had to choose one i personally like Evio best but thats mainly because Caulk is awesome and the davik is on the cache partition freeing up some of the space on the phone.

i've tried almost every ROM available (literally) and it boilded down between baked and evio. i'm still switching back and forth but am leaning towards evio as it has more tweaks (dalvik moved to sd, haptic feedback removed from dialer and lockscreen, ability to remove sense and htc lockscreen, awesome notification icons, clear htc lockscreen, debug icon removed, reboot/recover option when power button is long pressed...). calk also seems like he's on the ball more.
as far as battery, i think the kernels will help with that more than the ROM. i swore by baked #6 for battery life, but am test driving king's #6 CFS and i may have a new kernel i'll recommend for battery life. i was dropping about 5-7% per hour on average daily use with baked #6; i'm currently averaging a drop of 3-5% per hour with kings #6 CFS. if you're a benchmark guy, i'm also getting higher linpack/quadrant scores (at lower frequencies to boot) w/ kings.

I cannot find BS #6 anywhere. I have donated on the baked shack and never got access, so the only time I saw #6 was at install. I will try King 6 cfs right now. I have also heard this before.
I was on Fresh 3.3 and once I flashed NA 4.1.9, I kept losing my Sense homescreen option. Two fresh installs and same thing. I moved to BS 1.8....Hero and those guys removed all traces of BS from this forum and you can only get access to any of it from their site, which they drag their feet letting people in....Hence me looking to move on past BS.. and their BS.

hero did not pack up and leave... he was booted by xda (i'll reserve my opinions about the matter).
try sending them a message through their webpage. i had to do the same after a couple of days of no response to my donation.
how are you liking kings #6 cfs?

Booted from here...hmmmm, can't imagine why. I finally got CFS 6 flashed about 10pm and went to bed. I woke up at 7am @ 85%. It was like 98% when I hit the bed. Charging to full now and see how it does today.

Magnolia 1.1.1

Hello,
I am new to posting at XDA (have followed for months), and have a question regarding the Magnolia Rom. Since this Rom's following is relatively small, posts regarding it are few and far between. I am more interested in people's experience with it. I apologize, I cannot post in the development thread for this rom due to low total posts.
First, let me say this rom is AWESOME! Very smooth, professional, and elegant.
I am coming from Virtuous 3.2 and got excellent battery life (30-35 up time, 6-7 hours awake with Virtuous Custom kernel and SetCPU). Has anyone found a kernel to create this type of battery life?
I've tried Ziggy's HAVS CFS, but I had to reboots in a relatively short time. I am currently using Lou #9, however I am starting to doubt whether the battery life is even achievable on this Rom...
Also, I've read Mag 1.2 is around the corner - any word on its release?
Thanks!
Ummm
I too anticipate jumping ship from Virtuous v3.2 as soon as Magnolia v1.2 is released.
However, I suspect a better place to ask this question might be the dev thread for Magnolia. People rarely use a custom ROM without also lurking that ROM's dev thread; so it is unlikely you would capture any more people here than there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=882878
He can't post there yet cause of the 10 post rule, but I am using Magnolia 1.1 with Lou's #9 and i average about 15 - 18 hours of battery life without setcpu and this is enough for me. But I suggest spam posting until u get 10 posts so you can post in the dev thread where all the smart people are
thank you both for your help!
I flashed lou's #8 last night and I'm at 9 hours up time, and only 28 minutes awake time - and i'm at 93%. Granted, as my time shows, I haven't used my phone much at all throughout the days - just a couple texts, and i downloaded one song.
i will be using it more this evening so i'll see how it goes.
also - do you guys have an issue where the HTC clock takes a couple seconds to update after you flip the screen on?
thanks!

I think that's because of how UC'ed the kernel is because of the smartass governer (For Lou's kernels I think it sets the cpu to 245/245 when the screen is off). Happens to me all the time, no biggie. And yea Magnolia was really great when I was using it. Loved the rosie and AppFolders.
Coming Saturday to an Incredible near you....
I plan on migrating from Virtuous 3.2 to Magnolia 1.2 when Steve posts it Saturday morning (as he's announced his forum). He's currently soliciting ideas for mods, too.
I'm running HeyItsLou's #7 right now (preferring to avoid BFS kernels and liking the idea of 10 touch points....although I don't use 'em all quite yet).
I've looked at Incredible Re-Engineered, and although the developer is very responsive, there's a known issue with MMS over wifi, and since I have poor cellular reception in my house, that's a deal breaker for me.
Would also consider Skyraider Sense, but I get the feeling from the forum that Magnolia is a slicker, faster ROM.

If you are talking about how it shows 1 hour and 2 minutes behind the regular time and then flips to the right time, that is the way HTC designed that clock to work. It is just a way for them to showcase the flipclock to where you will notice it more.

Well, there's no perfect answer to this question. The best 2.3 ROM is the one that works best on your phone. Every ROM performs just a bit differently on each person's phone. Apps added and other changes made can also effect this. Our Epics can be like a second girlfriend...one minute giving you all kinds of love and happiness and the next minute can be a real pain in the ass...wait maybe I need a new girlfriend!

Yup, its all about trial and error. I can't tell you how many times I have tried a ROM and its worked perfect only for other users to report constant force closes. When you do find the ROMs that work perfect you will be a very happy camper. It pains me to run a stock setup now.

CM7.
jk. But I'd check out acs bamboozled...best gb rom I've used so far.
I've tried two (or three) 2.3 based roms and there has been a couple of things that have always caused me to go back to SRF 1.2:
No custom kernels = no overclock - I'm not a huge overclocking type of guy, but I always like to have it clocked at 1.12 or 1.2 ghz, just enough to keep it smooth but not high enough to run it hot or drain my battery.
No custom kernels = Cannot use Galaxy Tuner - I use Google Music as my primary source of car music, which means I needed to find an external app to use as an equalizer. Voodoo sound didn't work and Tuner froze on me every time I tried to use it.
Still Very buggy - I've run into a few bugs that have always irritated me, no matter how small they were. Whether it's something that freezes my phone or just kills the frame rate, I've just always been bugged (get it?) by bugs.
But where there is bad things, there have been a lot of good things that I absolutely loved about 2.3, almost enough to stay with it:
Live Backgrounds - For me, they've seem to have gotten better (stock ones anyways) and, as far as I could tell, they don't murder my battery or frame rate. The one I loved the most was this awesome looking clock that was a bunch of circles. It's hard to explain...
Screen off Animation - More eye candy, but awesome eye candy. Not much to say other then I love watching my phone turn off
Everything just seemed so smooth - Scrolling, opening apps up, etc, just seemed so fluid and clean, even if the frame rate was dropping for some reasons.
------
Those are some of my personal pro's and con's on deciding whether to run 2.3 at this time or not. For me, the con's on top were more important then the pro's on the bottom. Needs are different for each person so I'm sticking with 2.2 for now until either the official release of 2.3 is out or we can start adding kernels and themes (etc etc).

You know there can be no custom kernels until source code is released. But as for overclocking, many have had success with Tegrak from the market that has allowed overclocking on the GB leaked ROMS.

Yea, I'm slowly learning all that, I just didn't know at the time. As for Tegrak, I heard it's a major drain on the battery for some reason, but maybe results vary from user to user. Overclocking wasn't a huge concern for me, it was the other two on there that kind of got to me. I'm still happy with 2.2 so that's why I've decided to wait it out
Install acs updater and try them all

hmm i never tried compkid's regeneration or inception roms. How are they?
as for the topic we are on now, i left acs1.2 the day eg22 came out and yeah al though for some things i would love to go back to acs1.2 but the scale is heavier for me on the gb side.
I used go green, team era's scrambled eggs and tried all the randomrom 2.3 versions (eagle, egret, osprey). The most stable rom for me is randomrom osprey. It is fast enough, great on battery and everything works well with it (other lauchers, apps, etc). As for scrambled eggs, man i loved how snappy that rom was. It was extremely quick upon the click but unfortunately it wasnt working that good with a few launcher and apps and way too many force closes but still fast. Even though i feel scrambled eggs was snappier than osprey, i did receive much higher quadrant scores with osprey (not that quadrant actally matters to me, just for the sake of seeing the scores).
GoGreen was meh for me and i am definitely anticipating an update for scrambled eggs..
I first went with Bamboozle, and it was good. Then one day there are 3 EG22 Roms here it seemed.
So I tried RandomRom and I was having an awful time after 2 days with FC's and reboots.
I then loaded Scrabmled Eggs yesterday and I have been clean (other than google Nav). I am checking battery life now, but I am doing better now than I was with RandomRom. I have to think I was doing something wrong with RandomRom cuz my battery life was terrible and the FC's. I did the same thing each time I installed them, but as said before, each phone is different.
Good luck!

Curious, how did you go about flashing RandomROM? It was the first EG22 rom i tried when it initially came out and all the updates since have worked flawlessly for me.

I was running the scrambled eg22v4, just installed v7 this morning and so far it seems a little better. Only complaint is my battery seems to be going down a little faster, but it could be cuz I've been messing with loading stuff and resetting everything up. I'll give more feedback when I've had it a few days. ACS Go Green wasn't bad either.

ICS From + ICS Incredikernel

Hi, my name is Dylan and im a noob. I searched the forums and couldn't find my answer if its out there could someone please link it, but if its not here goes..
Let me start off saying I'm fascinated by phone rooting and all the things that are possible and I'm so thankful for these forums so shout out to all the devs. My amazing girlfriend bought me my first smartphone for Christmas (dinc) and I'm amazed by it. Thanks to these forums I've successfully downgraded from 2.3.4 to 2.2 and rooted it. I'm obsessed with flashing roms now, but kushdecks ics has me I love the look, but sorry for the irrelevant info to my question. I'm using incredikernel ics idk the version its the latest one and I enabled zram overclocked to the Max setting and set to smartassv2. Now I was wondering is there any way to tweak it a little more to speed it up and get more out of the battery? I have the 2150 battery but it still drains it like a mug. And also my phone sometimes just freezes and I need to pop the battery out because it just totally lags out. Any fix to that as well? I already followed the setting guide with the wifi, sync, location etc. Thanks.

Well if you've been through the dislplay setting and cut the diplay to 15 % brightness sound like you've done that part well.
CPU settings, i prefer intellidemand but whatever floats your boat.
If you are determined to stick to ICS I suggest swithcing to Evervolv preview 7, its a bit farther along than ics inc deck in development.
If battery life is your top prority, I suggest switching to one of the AOSP gingerbread roms like CM7, Inc-Deck, or OMGB/OMFGB. they run great and no programs really hog battery.
Use adrenaline mod v13, since i began using it I've gotten better life. It can be found in POQbum's post at the top of the dev forum.
Finally, monitor your usage. Playing with your phone can be addictive, just remember that the display is usually the culprit behind poor battery life.
Good Luck!

I might be wrong about this but I believe by overclocking you mean increase the CPU speed which in return will usually equate to lower battery life. That ROM is also still in alpha stage. Some roms with good battery life are miui, not the ics version, and some have great luck with CM7.
If you're desiring battery life, go to the cm7 nightly thread and use one of the kangs. Ics isn't ready for daily use quite yet

[Q]TouchWiz Themes, Mods, Tweaks, Add-ons, etc...

Have a dumb question in which I am sure a lot of threads have been created about it but I cant seem to find one thread that at least displays what works on our T-Mobile variant SGS3.
What I want to know is what themes work, add-ons, tweaks, etc.
Themes: There are a lot to choose from with the "OMG 19 Themes" aroma install but there are a lot more themes that are located in the other SGS3 variant forums. I've managed to get one of the International version "Glass Theme" to work with a few adjustments. Basically it would be nice to see if there was a thread on here to show what themes work and what does not.
Add-ons:Multi-Window, Ink Effect (Multiple Colors), Pop-up Broweser, Volume Rocker Skip track, Back-To-Kill, Multi-Dpi TouchWiz apps, TouchWiz launcher features, etc...
A lot of these add-ons can be found in some of the TWRoms available but wouldnt it be nice to have a thread that gives us the freedom to have these be installed on any TWRoms?
Dumb thread I am sure but I am bored at work so....
Personally I like aosp roms such as cyanogemmod 10.1 over the touchwiz stuff, i just can't stand using the default stock sg3 rom, it's just annoying in a lot of ways. if you were to switch over to aosp i would give you suggestions on tweaks etc, i get blazing fast speeds of data at 8mb/s i get like amazing battery life, my battery usually lasts 2 days no charge before reaching 14% so I don't think touchwiz has all those features but hey I could give you one kernel that i recomend for you that also works on touchwiz, It's the kt747 kernel.
Here is link for that amazing powerful and battery saving kernel. forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871946
make sure you download either touchwiz version or aosp kernel version because flashing aosp kt747 kernel on touchwiz rom will put u in a bootloop.
good luck

Rawdaddy,
One good app i can suggest you find on the play store is the air push detector because that app will save you from malware bastards who make bad software that pushes spam notifications to your phone that drain your battery. air Push detector is like your antivirus or firewall or the malwarebytes of the phone world. it will knwo all malicious apps after it scans them.
i also use the room toolbox lite which allows you to get tweaks mods etc and even edit buildprops but i'd be careful when editing build props or using roomtoolbox make sure you backup your current rom so if u mess up any settings then you can always go back. One of the most important things I can suggest when it comes to watching downloaded movies on your big gs3 screen phone is to use BS PLAYER, u can get it from the android app store.
I've tested every movie player out there and the only one that is perfect and can run every video well without errors is the bsplayer, if u notice mobo player u might not hear sound but see video and mxplayer vice fersa yet bsplayer can play all hd 720p movies very well. I'm an online movie downloader from scene sites.
another suggestion i recomend is to stay away from MIUI roms and also Jovy's roms such as his xperia, it usually takes Jovy about 5 release updates to get things right, i've tried his roms and data doesn't work right and after im done talking to a person the proximity sensor gets screen stuck on black.
MIUI is just complete junk, i'm a crack flasher flashaholic and I know definately that stuff need serious work for people to even consider seriously, they want to imitate the ios look but the whole things is unstable and battery life sucks.
Use Liquidsmooth Rom if you want super stabiltity.
I'm enjoying the cm10.1 and facebook is working on it just fine.
I also dont' recomend installing themes on any cm10 build, battery life will die.
For battery tips I would recomend you clear battery stats before flashing a new rom and drain your battery all the way, let it fully die then plug it in without unpluging at all until it finishes charging and you should notice great improvement.
Also don't keep battery plugged in yor charger overnight after it's fully charged because i heard that puts excess electricity in your battery and phone causing issues and your battery life won't be prolonged.
Well to be honest ive pretty much tried every rom that there is available for us to use. Ive even tried AT&T roms. From stock ics touchwiz to jb touchwiz. Ive tried most if not all aosp roms aokp roms cm roms paranoid roms pacman roms and I'm still not able to stick with one rom.
Most if not all Aosp based roms suffer from screen flickering and the wake up black screen of death. Some roms have features I like while the others have better visual settings.
I recently just went back to TW roms. Thata why I want to know what I can do to improve my experience with these roms.

Tried all the 4.2 ROMs that are available. Best one I tried is Kaspers release, bugs of course but usable.
Still looking for the best TW ROM with plenty of mods and features.
One day...

Umm. There is some questionable advice in this post. Clearing battery stats? Not sure the poster understands what that does based on his other misinformation. You can leave the phone on the charger overnight without any issues. The phone recognizes the full charge and allows it to run down a bit before charging again. In the morning when you pull it off the charger it may appear to discharge fast but that is because it was not a full charge. That is not an issue. Running the battery dry is also bad info. It can damage the cells in the battery. Don't trust me. Do a little research and see if you come to a different conclusion.

Ps. Bad mouthing devs is not a good idea Osman.
Ugh I am fed up with 4.2 at the moment (Data Speeds hang sometimes). Going to try another TW Rom. AeonFluxxV5 seems legit. Any one with any themes they would like to share???
