Then this is why we got custom roms. So I'm sure it will be ported some way.

yeah, HTC Desire will not support Gingerbread. Froyo will be the last Android update to Desire.
Gingerbread won't be out till January 2011 earliest. It will be a major change in UI and function over the Android 2.X strand. Desire would need 6 months to port it over. It also might not be easy to implement Sense UI on Gingerbread. Plus, new HTC phones will be due out in Q2 of 2011 I would guess, so Froyo will be last update on Desire.

As far as Google said that Android 3.0 would make UI peronalizations remain needless, there is no need for HTC to port Sense UI, isn't?

but if gingerbread is not coming to desire, i may liquidate this mobile set before it gets too old and get a new one
"Will the Desire get Gingerbread"??? - from HTC, I doubt it...
from XDA - somehow I think it will... can you imagine it all those devs working away thinking "new OS to play with on my Desire, no thanks!"... lol

The only thing Desire lacks from hardware is the internal memory. HTC definitely should work for Gingerbread update on recent models like Desire HD/Desire Z. If thats done porting that to Desire will not be too difficult using A2SD. Yea for some drivers it will be problem. Still I hope xda-devs can do that in few months. As far as official support is concerned I guess Desire will get an update from HTC for either the new Sense UI (as heard from lot of rumors) or a delayed Gingerbread support with less functions or UI features etc. At least Gingerbread is not too heavy update on Froyo. So I guess the fortune of Desire is not too dull unless HTC decides to archive it.
I don't feel like liquidating this nice piece of hardware before Honycomb arrives.
It's been seen running on N1 via submitted AirBench test, so Desire users will get it from the N1 release.
Hi
I just contacted htc support and asked them about the gingerbread. They replied me in this way:
With regards to your enquiry, Kindly note that all we have that gingerbread will be released, but we didn’t get specific information yet about the upgradeable device and regions as they are still testing the compatibility with all devices to decide the applicable devices.
Crikey... If HTC don't release 3.0 for the Desire, it'd be a pretty poor show... Being outdone by Apple?! After all, everything bar the iPhone 2G supports iOS4!

Trying the serious take:
It is said [read: rumoured], that Android 3.0 will mostly be about the interface. But one problem is that if you have HTC Sense, it'll be unlikely you will see this native 3.0 interface on your phone. But it should at least bring a lot of new stuff to your Desire. - Of course, it's possible to stop Sense from running, but you won't get exactly what I'm talking about this way.
The jump from a number like 2.1 or 2.2 to 3.0 is a rather big one, so I'm expecting a lot from it.
Also, anyone know of an official confirmation that 'gingerbread' is actually 3.0? Since there are rumours going about saying the next update would be called 'honeycomb'. It'd be too early to know anything about another version of Android if you ask me.
My biggest wish is just that this new interface thing they're working on will add the right amount of polish. That's one little thing I miss of Android, the consistency of applications and stuff - everything is different and there are no apps which share the same smoothness between eachother, but that's also due to how easily people can put something in the Android Market.
I know, if I want consistency and smoothness and the best looking interfaces, I should go for an iPhone. That's my own opinion by the way. It's just that I really like Android phones and the operating system, but dislike how everything looks so different from eachother. (unlike on the iPhone)
Please, Android 3.0, make the wait worthwhile..
Turns out 'Jaffacake' has been leaked and will be in a CM6 nightly soon ;D

Yep, as we've seen from the Froyo roms, as soon as Android 3.0 hits the Nexus there will be ports and when it hits the AOSP it'll be compiled for the Desire. It may not ever be officially released for the Desire by HTC, but we'll get it somehow.
From what I read at Phandroid, Android 3.0 (honeycomb or gingerbread or gingercomb or honeybread etc.) might never make it to the Nexus One or the Desire. Reason being it shall be catered to high end smart phones like the Evo and Droid X.
Plus the revamp of the UI and the need for a bigger display, most likely it won't make it to the Desire. There's also a rumor going around that the Android 3.0 shall have no other UI layered on top so no HTC Sense or Motoblur.
Well it's all still rumors. Let's just wait for Christmas okay?
P.S: I think Winnie the Pooh might love Android 3.0.

And you don't consider a Desire "high end"? Droid X and Evo might have a bigger screen but the resolution is the same as the Desire. The Evo, besides the bigger screen and 4G, isn't more powerful or "high end"-er than the Desire...

The Desire fits nicely above the required hardware specifications
Well who knows if they're 100% accurate... Still the Desires probably one of the best Android phones out there so it'll be possible they wouldn't make it so much more needed than what exists now.
Hi all
Do you recommend buying Desire ?!
I tried Android at Wildfire and found it so good and amazing so i sold it and want to get a new more powerful device
It costs around 420~500 USD in my country - Egypt and the devices in that range is New Galaxy Ace or used Galaxy S and i don't like both
already compared it to Desire S and couldn't find any huge different which will cost me more 100 USD !!!
so do you recommend buying HTC Desire ? and is it true it will updated to New Sense same one in Desire S ???!!!
Desire S has the double of space (1.1 GB internal memory) compared to the normal Desire
Desire will never get sense 3.0
But if u can spend a bit more or found a cheap offer, i'll go for the samsung galaxy s 2, once buyed it u can stay with it for 2-3 years without need to change phone (the same is not true for the desire s in this moment, because it's already "old")
Just my opinion if you going to buy a new phone, anyway i will stay with an other year or more with my desire (got it in april 2010) before buy an other top phone, this is my personal philosophy
I just recently bought a used Desire for about $200 CAD and I love it.
My voice plan with Rogers comes to like 22$ and I have no desire to add a $25 data plan to get $50/month plan to get a phone subsidized from them.
I just the App2SD with a 1GB ext4 partition on my SD card to get around the limited space the phone has.

Galaxy S II will cost me about 800$ and this is too much for phone , buying i7+6GB laptop will be better idea
i think that i already saw costume roms for Desire with sense 3 and circle lock screen or i am wrong ??!!
and i am still noob at Android but i thing with root i can add more extra space for phone to install apps to it exactly like installing them to phone memory and it's so easy to get 8 or 16 GB SD Card ???
and as you said Desire S seems to be old and same as Desire so i think spending more money on it will not be a good idea
What about Desire HD , If i managed to get it with good deal do you recommend it ?
will it be updated to new Sense the one in Sensation officially or also will be custom rom ?

DHD is a fair bit better and still has some decent rom support. It will probably get the sense update, so if you can't really find a newer phone i'd say yeah, go for it.
i'm also pretty much new with android and htc so let me give you some n00b insight...
i've owned Desire for 3 months and i got used to it by now. it can give you both joy and anger. it depends on how you use it. if you live it on stock ROM it'll work smooth and you can find tips and tricks how to make it somewhat better without rooting and flashing roms: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653310
if you decide to root and flash custom ROMs then you can get even better device with many tweaks already built-in new software. for example you can flash Desire HD rom and therefore don't have to actually buy DHD (hardware is not that much different IMHO). now i'm running InsertCoin Gingerbread based rom which hasn't even been released for Desire yet, with many Sense 3.0 goodies which probably won't be officially included in GB update at all. as a downside, these roms can have some bugs, but are overall better than stock. just take a look into some rom development topics...
Desire has it's flaws but overall i'm waaay satisfied... although it's now an old rag D) it still kicks many "smartphone" butts out there. i came from nokia x6 and now i wonder why did i go there in a first place...
anyway, i think you can't go wrong with it. you can of course buy DHD for somewhat better hardware or spare some more money for sensation, but if you're unviling to do so, Desire is still great choice...just my 2 cents!! cheers, i hope this helps a bit!

The problem is getting SGSII or Sensation that thier prices are too high now and sooner their prices will be lower than now so i don't think it's good idea to get 2 months old phone right now ,,,
i liked HTC Sense a lot so i am choosing from HTC not Samsung also HTC have bigger support from developers than Samsung as i can see
but i read that it's sound is low and LCD Screen not that good ,, is this true ?

yeah, x6 had much better camera, and camera is my only problem with desire. but the phone (any phone) is never meant to be a substitute for real camera..so no real prob here....
DHD rom for desire is actually a port, so desire can run it. it's not THE rom from DHD. with that said, you can put virtually any rom into desire but with more or less tweaking to the point where hardware eventually becomes incapable of running much newer rom. therefore sense 3.0 stuff are greatly tweaked for desire to be able to run it. it's not like the real thing but pretty much close. and it's getting better every day... modders here are the wizards, i tell you...
so yeah, i'm happy with desire, didn't regret spending the money on it at all!
as for the official update from HTC, there were many contradictory statements, and the final one is that there WILL be gingerbread update but no word on sense update. you can find it in desire-general section.
I'm using Desire since April 2010, so it's more than a year now. I was very excited about the whole Android thing. And still am. But the phone itself has some big issues. First of all is the huge lack of internal memory. I can't even install the most necessary apps. Secondly it's the overheating problem. My Desire was one of the first Amoled batches and it had issues with the SOC. While using processor demanding apps like navigation, flash playback etc. It was constantly rebooting. Had to repair it. For 3 times. Then it's the speaker and battery. They both are weak. After my previous E61 Desiree's speaker really sucks. Camera is decent too. But in overall I still like, though I would really consider buying SGS back then. Now I'll wait for another year or so. Btw I'm now using MIUI ROM and it gave a second breath to Desire. Good luck with buying!

If you're talking about the HTC Sensation, thats the best choice you can make ... Dont know if a Desire Sensation exist... Think in a couple of days theres a way to permroot the Sensation, then you will have a lot of fun with that stuff
Samsung Galaxy S 2 is the smarttest choice, HTC Sensation is the second choice. Both are dual core
I would go for the sgs 2 as well. They have Cyanogenmod nightly builds which is the most important thing to me these days. Further down the list is the superb hardware.
Sent from my Cyanogenmod 7 phone.
Sure, the SGS is a nice one, but in my opinion it looks... simply cheap
I have the optimus 2x and it doesn't feel faster than the DHD. I believe later versions of android will utilize the second core better but until then you won't feel much difference.
To your question, the galaxy s series are very fast and with open bootloaders and everything, but the feel very cheap and plasticy when held ( imo ) I wouldn't buy them over the DHD or the sensation. On the other hand they do have cm7 support but many hardware drivers are missing so they don't work as good with cm as our DHDs do. I bet the Sensation will have a more operational cm built before the sgs II despite the head start. If you don't care about cm though or you don't mind/like the way the sgs II feels in your hand, it's the best you can buy.

The Sensation now has s-off and able to install custom Roms. Think I saw the info on Android Police.
LeeDrOiD already has a custom rom for it. He supports all his roms well and has a high attention to detail.
I personally would have bought one and LeeDrOiD powered it, but it doesn't support 850mhz (edit: 3g) , which I really want now. ....... So a SGS2 on order.

What would be a logical upgrade from my desire?
i'm looking for a new phone, but all i really want is a desire with a bigger screen and preferably a dual core processor (OFC as it is a new phone i expect it to be updated to ICS, is this expectation wrong)
What is also important for me would be the modding community, there are so many people modding the desire, with so many roms, and awesome mods. I hope for something near that in a new device.
I don't really care if it's from the US or EU, as long as it works on the GSM band we use in denmark. but it would be nice if it was available in the US as they are usually cheaper over there.
What would be a logical upgrade from the desire?

Well really it doesn't have to be made by HTC, i really like the new android barebones interface on ICS
i also need to know, does the fact that an American phone supports GSM mean that it will accept one of my fancy european SIM cards (heard that CDMA doesn't need a sim card)

i also need to know, does the fact that an American phone supports GSM mean that it will accept one of my fancy european SIM cards (heard that CDMA doesn't need a sim card)

I'm from Russia myself, and I'm using a SIM-card too) as I've heard, some of the US operators (like AT&T and T-Mobile) are using GSM bands, so... There should be an American GSM versions of those phones. Well, if you want ICS - take a look at Google Galaxy Nexus...
PS: The CDMA-2000 phones use R-UIM cards instead of SIM. In our county...

This Galaxy nexus could be the right choice, it's rather expensive, but offers all the things i really want.
One question remains tho: will the modding scene be as big as the desire, or even the original nexus?
It seems to me that it won't be so big as for N1 and Desire... Because Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a twin with HTC Sense as N1 does...) But xda thread for Android development for GN has already about 70 topics... And there are roms, kernels...
Two years ago Desire was the mainstream phone... Galaxy Nexus is the top-class... There won't be so many people having it, IMHO...

IMO,
The Desire S isn't a true upgrade over the original Desire.
The Desire was tthe top end phone in 2010.
In 2011 it was the Sensation that succeeded it.
The Legend was the stylish mod range phone in 2010
In 2011 the Desire S was the molid range stylish phone
So I think the sensation is the true successor

This is a very difficult question.
I have also been pondering an upgrade. The way I see it we have Four Choices.
1) Samsung Galaxy SII (sorry, I know it is not a HTC, but I thought it was worth mentioning).
2) HTC Sensation XE
3) HTC Evo3D
4) Wait until March when new phones will be announced.
The thing which bothers me most about the Sensation XE and the EVO3D is that the screens appear to looked washed out compared to my Desire. In my opinion the Inedible S is the only new(ish) HTC phone with a nice(ish) screen.
Just wish HTC used AMOLED again like that did with the Desire.

Definintely. all the nexus phones from google are "developer" phones.
Unlike the desire or other non-google partner devices, when google releases source code for a new android version, they also release the proprietary files (drivers etc) in order to compile the source fully for the device without the need for hacks like we see here. Of course google will eventually stop updating the devices like they did the N1 but, they will still attract a large community of developers.
I'd get one if they ever stop letting Samsung make them. Maybe Moto?
I suggest the sgs2. Its in every way better than the sensation. I bought one too.
