Questions regarding changing roms - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So if I want to change from Fresh 3.1 to lets say...Baked Snack, and I have the donated version of Titanium Backup...what settings do I use on Titanium backup to backup as much as I can and restore it on the new rom without getting any FC issues or other issues?
Also, my Fresh rom has that red theme, EnamoRED, so can that be used on Baked Snack as well??
Should I even change roms? I was on CM6 but just got to many FCs and switched to Fresh which I like, but it gets sluggish sometimes and it KILLS my battery. DC 3.5 seems to blah for me....
Please provide suggestions. I use my phone for normal use, phone calls, messaging, browsing, and so forth. Also suggest the best kernals for me if possible. Thanks again for your time.

I only backup all apps and data..I don't do system apps..
Normally if I am switching between ROM's I only restore apps and not the data cause I don't want that to cause problems.
I rarely ever see any fc's when using CM6 so that really sucks because I think its the best out there. Nobody can answer what ROM to use cause everyone is different.
Try ROM Manager from the market..Its awesome to backup entire ROM's and switch between backup etc.

My favorite combos so far are
Netarchy 4.0.3 + Fresh (Newest) = SICK battery life and awesome speed..
AND
Cyano Snap6 v7 + Cyno Nightly = Fastest by far, super stable, and decent battery life.
Don't use ROM manager if flashing the nightly with snap v7.

Best rom for evo?

So what rom do u think is the best and y?
*This was posted from my Evo 4G*
I've used Damage Control and Fresh. I like Damage better because you get Dconfig which has a lot of settings(some you shouldn't mess with unless you know what they mean)and battery life seems much better. You can also enable JIT with or without Sense(not as fast as the Nexus, but FAST). I do like Fresh because of the Espresso launcher though.
Fresh Rom is my favorite. It's stable, there's a lot of support, and there will be updates as progress is made. I'm using Fresh 1.0.1 +Netarchy kernel (FPS Unlocked) + JIT Patch and it's fassssssssst. About 20MFLOPS, 55FPS.
That's like asking what the best fruit in the world is. Mostly depends on what you're looking for but I'm a fan of DamageControl because of the amazing battery life, stability, and frequent updates.
Its all a highly opinionated matter. Best thing to do would be to try a few, make nandroid backups and just restore the backups as you wish. Also I would highly recomend using titanium backup or something similar to keep all your apps installed.
Personally, I'm rocking the baked snack atm (great work Hero!), with the netarchy kernel. It looks stock, is very stable, and has amazing battery life. Might not be as fast as the JIT builds, but it does everything I need it to easily.

prolly a dumb question, but does the Fresh ROM use Sense or no??

With so many roms available...which is best?

I am currently running CM6 nightly 8/2/10 version. I like it but there are so many other roms out there I don't know if I'm missing out or not.
I used to use DC 3.2.3 before it went to 3.5 and liked it but CM6 is faster.
So can anyone give me suggestions on which roms are commonly known as the best at this time and what functions they have over others, namely CM6?
Thanks,
Rooted stock if you want stable phone and no lose a lot of time flashing roms.
The next time that I am going to flash a rom is when it says final, stable.

CM6 is pretty stable...Few and far between force closes, usually only when I reboot the phone do I get a FC for the ACORE I think? My big problem with CM6 is the battery. Been unplugged for about 9.5 hours or so and its at 68% with about 25 minutes of talk time and 5 minutes of web browsing...
Used CM6 for about a week. Nice ROM and I can't wait till it's complete.
But too many little things bothered me.
Camera shutter speed is way slow. It's practically useless even though it works.
Battery life was pretty bad for me. It seems to drain even when it's on standby. 4G and a few other things didn't work. It was fun, but definitely not for me.
Went back to Sense and everything just works. I do miss some of the AOSP apps like 3d gallery, music, etc...
Roms are all about personal choice/,preference. Answering that question would be up to the user. Everyone had features and other goodies they like in a particular Rom than others. It's up to you to try out the different roms and see what works best for u, which one gives u the most base on your needs.

Of all the roms, which do you....

feel gives the best performance and best battery life? There are so many to choose from and I hate flashing one, setting all my crap back up and flashing another. I am on Baked Snacks 1.7 now, as of 11pm lastnight. So far it's nice. Not much diff from 1.5 I was on. I like SenseUI, so I want roms with it.
I hear good things about CM6, but it sounds complicated to install.
I'm running Stock De-odexed right now but I working on my own based off the new OTA. For me, CM6 wasn't hard to install - all I had to do was flash it with ClockworkMod and it worked OotB.
Well, if you want SenseUI, I wouldn't go with CM6 since it's more of an AOSP rom. Check out Fresh 3.2, that's as Sense as it can get with really great battery life (IMHO), on a stock "unreleased" kernel. I've been running Fresh roms since the beginning and still loving it.

CM6 is probably the fastest, not sure about battery life. CM6 is not sense and its also not complicated to install. You just need to flash the google apps as well as the CM6 rom. You can do them both at the same time then reboot. No big deal. However CM6 has no sense and thus can be pretty diffrent and raw feeling at first. If you like sense and you want to try CM6 try out launcher pro with CM6 I hear they got some great sense like widgets, plus you can get some sense like widgets on the market. Other good options are Damage Control and Fresh both are great roms with plenty of options. Baked snacks is good though too so really its hard to say whats the best. It really does come down to prefrence.
Personaly I run CM6 and I use ADW launcher. Its fast, and battery life is great. The options in CM6 are awesome and the options with ADW launcher are awesome as well. However if you go with CM6 you are going to want to play with the settings, it will help you get to know the rom and setting it up will really allow you to apricaite it.
Also I dont use a task kill and I dont recomened using one. However, I have heard good things about juice defender and people are starting to swear by it for battery life. Personaly I get a full day plus depending on usage, so I dont use it. I just make sure to charge my phone before I wake up.
CM6 + Juice Defender + Ultimate Juice is where I keep landing. I've tried several roms, but that combo works best for me. Fast, stable, and I get 22 - 30 hours out of my battery depending on usage.
Yes, CM is lacking 4g and HDMI out, not a big deal for me. The benefits FAAAAAARRRRR outweigh those two things.
Fresh 3.2, everything works
Good info, guys. I have been considering Fresh 3.2...I have been reading that thread quite a bit.
Do you have to flash the kernel separately from the rom on 3.2??

Every rom haas it's own kernel, some come with modded custom kernels, others are just stock. As long as you make sure it's compatible with the rom you are using you can always flash a custom kernel later.
Some guy told me earlier that the first 10% of the EVO battery drains away quick, which mine does. You don't start juding battery like until 90%. Anyone else heard this?
I have tried several roms. cm6 is nice but too many issues right now ie 4g, hdmi, mms broken.
I finally found a good rom; check it out.
[ROM] VaelPak v2.0 (9/6/10) -NonSense -[HTC#7][BFS][OC][UV][FPSU] -3.28.651.1 OTA
This rom you can choose sense or aosp apps and 3 launchers which awd launcher is the only real choice. If you choose awd you might want to change the settings to scroll the apps vertical. And of course this being a htc rom it has the stock bluetooth stack.
I'm using the v2.0 with Kings BFS8 Kernel (9/6/10) -

Vaelpak is a good balance between sense and aosp. I use Launcherpro.

what ROM am i looking for?

so ive been thinking about rooting my phone. im gettign tired of seeing the "low disk space" icons and sometimes the lag is just annoying...
i just dont know what rom im looking for.
ive been looking at cyanogen and thinking about going with that but ive been reading theres problems with the wifi and other minor stuff. so i was hoping you guys could help me out.
im looking for a ROM thats fast, stable, and still syncs up with google cal and contacts and gmail and gtasks and etc. but i also want it to be reliable in terms of other things such as the alarm clock, bluetooth, wifi, gps and whatnot. i also want it to be compatible with google voice... also, i would like longer battery life while keeping adequate performance up. so many underclock while my screen is off and overclock while its on? (if there is such an option)
also, another question i had was if i flashed a vanilla ROM on, would i lose all my sense widgets? and if i do, is it hard to find good looking widgets without paying any money?
thanks.
You can backup your previous roms so if you don't like one you flashed you can go back. And Widgets are usually hard to find. I'd suggest cm6.1 or virtuous for a rom and either an invisiblek or Chad kernel that will give you great performance and good battery life. I hope that helps

Yes, and no. You will lose all sense widgets, but you can find good free versions. I would start with Fancy Widget for clock.
My Rom Recommendation:
I am running CM 6.1 with B-SCM Splash of Red theme
and Ziggy471's latest kernel. But, a word of warning:
NEVER overclock past 1.19GHz on the Ziggy kernels. Most support going up to 1228000, but I've NEVER seen this work. No harm will be done usually (a brief stall followed by a reboot), but if you set this and then check Set On Boot, THEN you're in trouble.
Also always nandroid before flashing. Backups are your best friend.

O yeah. Also, a pointer about installing kernels and themes
0 Nandroid
1 Wipe Data / Factory Reset
2 Install ROM
3 Reboot, complete setup
4 Reboot to recovery, install kernel
5 Reboot, verify touch, WiFi
6 Reboot to Recovery, install theme (and Droid2 Keyboard, Bootanimations, etc.)
7 DONE! Exhale deeply.
does radio=kernel?

no, the radio is something you can change to improve your signal and battery life. you need to have S-OFF (ie unrevoked forever) to do this through HBOOT. I wouldn't recommended it if you're not advanced because this is one of the few ways you could brick your phone. If you do decide to change it, make sure you do your research and don't rush it.
Although I'm using a source CM rom, source never really works 100% for our phones. Sense roms are the most compatible and best way to go for compatibility reasons. Try out "Uber Z" or the virtuous ROMs.
Here are some TIPS!

The best ASOP roms that i have tried are Cyanogenmod 6.1 and Skyraider Athena 1.2. These roms are both available in the ROM manager app. Both of the roms are very fast with almost no bugs, Although they will not give you the best battery life. With that being said you can still change the kernel as long it is an ASOP kernel.
As far as sense roms i like Virtuous rom and almost any Desire Z rom. The rom i am using ATM is Uber Z. This is a very nice and stable rom.
If you want something that looks totaly different than android i would go with MIUI. This is a great rom with great battery life. keep in mind it is sort of based off of apple's IOS.

Recommend me a ROM please!

I'm not picky here, I just want a stable ROM with 4G and the main stuff working. I just ask that for something with good battery life. I'm currently using Baked Snacks 1.9 and it drains crazy fast.
On a side note, hopefully the installation is easy. Are all the new ROM's requiring you to wipe the SD card, format, etc? What happened to just installing the zip?
I recommend CM7. Use the 7.0.1 stable version.

My only issue with CM7 is the voicemail not working. I know you can use Google Voice, but i've seen a lot of people not liking that either. Any idea about that?

The voice mail does work:
-on a sense rom, verify the app works
-backup the app and data with titanium backup
-flash back to CM7
-restore app and data with titanium backup
I use google voice, but I personally like that.
I'll give it a try then! Any ideas on kernel? Stick with stock or is there a recommended one for battery life?
Myns warm 2.2 rls 5 has it all and its stable. CM7 has given some problems. They can be worked out but be prepared.

For CM7, Timatt kernel...3.3.7 or 4.02 are the best. DO NOT USE 4.0.0, as it broke cameras left and right.
What's this google apps addon? Where do I get that?
I like
both of Virus ROMS.. the GengerSense and Revolution .. i have had good luck with both

Destroyer v2 rom or end of days
it's awsome with transitions battery life suks but wwith a custom kernel it's badass
and if u want great battery life flash a kernel for a aosp rom try tiamat's 4.0.2 sbc or savaged zen
for a sense based rom try netarchy oh and dude if u like ur rom but hate battery life u can just flash a kernel
It could be something other than the rom. Have you tried calibrating your battery? If you're in a crappy coverage area, flashing a new rom won't help (much). Also be sure to turn off your radios when not in use - 3g/4g, wifi, gps, bluetooth, etc. When I can, I use wifi. It saves a ton of battery over 3g/4g and it's always faster... at least for me.
But I'd still flash a new rom, just for fun
Sent from my Evo using Tapatalk
try the original destoryer rom( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988684&highlight=destroyer ) along with tiamats 3.3.8 or tiamats 3.3.8 with sbc depending if you like sbc or not ( http://www.tiamat-aosp.com/downloads.php/ ). i get about 14-20 hours of moderate to heavy use.
do cm7 for sure.
both of the destroyers are based on cm7, and both are sadly out of date. end of days is the newer version of destroyer, and is more in date, but still flash cm7 nightly.
i would wait until the next nightly comes out. that'll have fixed mms. or just flash stable 7.0.3.1.
either way tiamat 4.0.2 is the bomb.
agreed... cm7 nightlies with tiamat 4.0.2 is killer
flashing decks gingerbread as we speak...
Check out Koni's Elite series 3...... everything works and it is the fastest sense room available....... it is flawless and does not get enough credit.....everyone should check this out......i have tried all of them and this is by far the best.....imho

I use MikFroYo v4.6 it runs and feels like stock. I have never found a problem with his roms.
AOSP: SalvageMod, Deck's Gingerbread, CyanogenMod
Sense: Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo, MikFroyo, AvaFroyo, Azrael, Fresh
End of Days ! (click on my siggy and get EOD v1)
it is based on recent cm7 (everything works)
and...
ive found a way to tweak the colors and make it look super smooth!!
but.....
for battery life you can get that with ANY rom. just need to do a little more homework on whats going on with your phones curent congifuration.
Virusrom Gingersense is awesome. Lockscreen and tabs in notification and sweet ass sweet. Long as you use stock kernal everything works. Oh and Virus gives props to the Cyanogen guys for the elements in his rom. Bunch of pretty stuff. Battery life is phenomenal also. Lost 3% idle overnight. I'm happy happy.
