I just recently bought a Palm Pre and returned it, hated it! So I bought the touch pro knowing it cam out almost a year ago (impulse buy). Now I am just curious, I know the touch pro 2 is coming to sprint, but its rumored that the hero will be out for sprint later this year, possibly December. Which one should i wait for?
i think major difference is the qwerty keyboard so decide if you need this or not.

+ one is android and other WM, usually a big difference depending on what you like.
That will depend on what is for you need the device
TP2: Buissness oriented device with the second best physical keyboard (1st is from Universal)
Hero: Multimedia oriented device with an OS tha promises a lot in the future, by now it needs to grow up and madurate
Welcome to my world, all these damn phones coming out, Hero I like however things I dont like are the shape, imagine that in your pocket? "Are you pleased to see me or is that a HTC Hero in your pocket?" and as the person above mentioned, lack of keyboard.
White doesnt stay clean for long either.

Haha, yeah I know, keyboard is a big deal to me. It's just WM seems to disappoint me a lot. Although I have high hopes for 6.5, I'm thinking sprint is waiting for 6.5 to release to touch pro 2, it would make it all that better!
But still, functionality versus a keyboard, I don't know! haah
I know what you mean about WM, but HTC have done a great job of masking the dull and boring monolike OS with Touchflo from what I have seen and WM 6.5 looks like a vast improvement at least visually.
Personally I think you, like me, would probably get bored of Android and the touch screen keypad would drive me nuts in the end.
I tried typing on an Iphone 3GS yesterday to get a (improved) idea of what a Diamond 2 or Hero might be like and with my fingers theres no chance I would type quickly on that ever, it would be like trying to look behind you without moving your head.
TP2 is the way to go, however the Omnia Pro is coming soon too, but then the Nvidia Tegra chipset powered HTC HD sequal is comign - I cant decide either, phones are like PC graphics cards these days.

the shape is virtually the same as the G1, and I've never heard anyone complain about any discomfort when they put the G1 in their pocket. and there may not be a hardware KB, but as far as onscreen KB's go, it looks like the Hero's will be one of best so far. and I like how the screen is capacitive and thus supports multi touch.
personally, I'm getting the TP2 when it comes out on AT&T. I'm also planning on picking up an unlocked Hero (unless it finds its way to the states, specifically AT&T). just want something else to play around with
Please buy both. Both has different strength, features & abilities. Both are totally different. I hope i will get one if god willing
For me it will be the one with the biggest screen & WM on it...TP2!

Yeah but the hero has a capacitive screen right? or am I wrong about that? Im actually not sure but I would think that it does because all the other android ones by HTC ara capacitive
Edit: I checked and im pretty sure its capacitive but I just browsed through search results
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530600
The same question has been haunting me lately too. I've been waiting forever for the TP2 to come to AT&T and now I see this. If they end up having release dates close together I'm thinking I might go with the hero. The main thing that will bother me is the lack of keyboard since I'm coming from a Kaiser (Tilt).

White is not definite. Colors and providers are yet to be determined according to an HTC rep on a youtube video that I saw earlier (If I can track it down again I'll include it with an edit....)

Agreed, but there's one big difference. You can get an upgrade discount on phones once every 1.5 years, otherwise you're paying out your A$$. Graphics cards are always the same (usually relatively lower) price.

Yeah you seem like you have the same thoughts as I do. I think you're right about getting tired with the android phone. I love messing with WM and modding it. I know you can with android, but it will have its limits. The thing about touch pro 2 not being a capacitive touch screen, it bums me out and makes me ask why they won't do this with WM yet. I can say they have been improving their resistive screens, big difference from the mogul to the touch pro, so I hope they can do that again. I am definitely leaning toward the touch pro 2. Does anyone know why they won't go with the capacitive screen on WM or touch pro 2?

This is exactly why I'm shying away from the TP2 and leaning towards the Hero or the Magic. The sheer idea of there being opportunities where I might need to resort to the stylus are completely holding me back. Guess I'll have to actually play with one before I make my decision; but, since using the capacitive touchscreen (iphone/G1), I'm not sure I can go back.

touch pro 2 is coming to tmobile august 8th and hero im not sure but the magic is coming july 8th..the resisitive touch screen on the pro is so smooth it feels like its capacitive..and its alot bigger screen and has multitouch..but the hero has android and its built very nicely with the teflon coat and finger print proof screen..i hate phones so many choices ((

The resistive screen is one of the selling points for me, especially one as finger-friendly as TP2s. Best of both worlds. I get easy navigation without having to constantly sheath and unsheath the stylus, but I can use a compact and conveniently tucked away stylus when needed. I very much doubt I'll ever need it for the basic interface, but with some apps I'll want it. My Palm TX has been my primary Chinese-English dictionary for some time (before it, my Palm T|T and m500 served the same purpose), and the same software is available for WinMo. I'd just as soon use a stylus for character recognition. For that matter, I'd just as soon use a stylus for handwritten memos. I imagine capacitative screen users get by on both fronts just fine, but for me, I'm glad there's a good resistive screen still available.

So far with my TP2, I have not used the stylus at all and I am a pretty heavy business user, thats emails, facebook, youtube, general browsing and posting on forums, stock, sms.
Whats more I have yet to use the actual qwerty keyboard aswell, I find the touch one good enough everytime unless I'm typing a huge email or document.
My advice is go and actually look at the Diamond 2 and TP2 in the flesh, it is totally different to looking at it on the internet, it really is a quality product.

sorry to burst your bubble, sir, but the TP2 doesn't support multi touch. that luxury is reserved for devices that have a capacitive display. and while the TP2 feels like it's capacitive, it isn't. the Hero, on the other hand, IS capacitive and therefore the screen supports multi touch
Is it your Fav phone?
mine by far

I don't mean any offense by this, but I think this Thread does not really belong in the Q&A section.
While it is a question if all of us think, whether this is the most awesome phone since the invention of cans and a string, it is not one that can be definitively answered.
So this would belong in the general section. This section - as I understand it - is for folks who have trouble with their device and seek advice or help.
actually it was meant for "Off-Topic" i do not know how it ended here =0
Not my FAVOURITE phone ever, simply because I waited so long for it and then it came with so many issues (for me). Dodgy loose z-hinge which causes the two halves of the phone not to stay tight shut (mine is still buffered with layers of electrical tape in between to stop the annoying tapping when one half hits the other when typing on the screen), poor screen in sunlight, really poor speaker, 4 row keyboard instead of 5. These are the things that made me unhappy when I got it, but with little else to choose from (Android qwerty-wise) I had little option but to get used to it.
I think my favourite phone ever has to be my G1, simply because it was on a completely different level to what I had been using previously (Nokia smartphones like the N85 and N73). Yeah, sure it didn't really have the hardware needed (especially towards the end of it's life) but I LOVED that phone like a child :-D
The G2/DZ is a pretty decent phone, but was not groundbreaking in any way, shape or form. The development scene for it is just as good as I remember the G1's being, which is a plus - and ultimately that, and the fact there are still no better qwertys in the UK, is the only reason I'm still using this thing.
I love it because I got in love with it in March, and wanted to get it with a budget of just 250€ euros... No used ones weren't fake, so I got a Nexus One, great phone, and I decided to keep it thinking it was better of my beloved DZ, than in August Desire Z was 240€ new and sold my nexus one to get it. Now I love it, every single thing but the back cover which is already damaged. I like HTC assistance: they sent me a courier (is it right?) beacause I lived 20km far from the collection point and then in one working week I had it back repaired... (now on the other side they're asking me to go to the colelction point to get a new usb cable, which is 10€ and I should take 10 euros of train to get there..).
But as for the phone itself it just lacks a better GPU and a bit more of battery... Oh yes, it should be at least two metres thicker and five tons lighter
but I love it!

yEAH g2 is an amazing device!
When I look at all the new phones without hard keys or trackpads, I don't know what I'll find to replace my G2. I just have to get a handle on my battery drain issues then I can get another two years from it. I still miss the g1 keyboard sometimes, but the g2 is better in so many ways.
It is.

great phones =)
Its actually the only phone I loved that hasnt broken on me yet had it for almost a full year now and it still runs great. Dropped it plenty of times on the ground and it only has a few scratches & dents. Z-hinges aren't really bothersome and really isnt that loose, it makes the phone fun to flip and play around with actually! I really cant see a new phone w/o a qwerty board. Lets hope we get to see at least some this year.
I honestly dont know if there is another phone out there for me to update to! So I see myself with the g2 for a looooong time! And I would have never updated to it if it wasnt for the H+ speeds!
G1 in honesty has the best hand placement/keyboard feel!
Another plus was it was Black too!!
Have had it for more than a year and was my first smart phone. For me the only other device that competes is mytouch 4g slide simply because I can't live without keyboard but imo this has a far better look and feel than the 4g

It's my favorite phone, but it only became so after rooting it. IMO Sense is a bulky solution for dummy proofing a phone. When I rooted and got rid of the bloat I started loving it more and more.
I had a Desire before I went to the G2. I had to find out the expensive way that a touchscreen only phone just doesn't work for me
I had the g1 before this, and a few sidekicks before that. I've been hooked on keyboard phones since around 2006. Being a t-mobile customer, I am bound to what they provide so physical keyboards have become somewhat of a necessary thing for me when shopping for a phone. The g2 came as quite a surprise really. It's nearly 2 years old now and with a little tweaking, it's still preforming as well as a lot of todays (stock) high end devices. Bravo htc.
I'm looking forward to future physical keyboard devices.
This phone sure is a great product.
Nice collection of roms to choose from, and gotta love the keyboard.
First phone with physical QWERTY to me, and I won't buy a phone without it again.
This does need some tweaking (custom rom & overclocking) to be fast enough for daily use - but it's very easy thing to do.
This is my second Android-phone.
My wife is looking for a new phone and I am ttying to convince her into getting a s3, but she wants a physical keyboard. Are there any cases out there that have a slide out bluetooth keyboard like they have out for the Iphone? I have searched ebay and amazon to no avail. I would hate to see her get a captivate glide because thats the only thing att has with a qwerty.

I saw this and thought I'd add my thoughts as a woman with pretty small hands.
For the last several years I have insisted on having a physical QWERTY. I'm a texting fiend. I also have pretty small hands. I'm 5'1" and rather petite.
I've been using a Samsung slide out QWERTY (Reality), but it's not really a smart phone and I had decided it was about time I got one. I didn't see any slide out smart phones that I liked so I decided to get the HTC One S. However, when I was using it in the store, I felt it was just monstrous. Like omg there is no way I'm ever going to be able to hold and use it big.
I ended up talking myself into the Samsung Blaze even though the specs were so much less than the One S purely bc of its small size. (Yes, I did know the S3 was coming out, but my contract with Verizon was up and I needed a new phone *now*, not a few weeks from then.)
It was the perfect size. I loved it for that, but it was driving me crazy that I passed up on the much better phone just for size. I kept it for nearly the two week return period. In that time I fell in love (LOVE!!!) with Swype. I honestly didn't miss my physical QWERTY at all after I played with some settings and got it working best for me.
I couldn't live knowing I was being stupid not getting the best now, so it wouldn't be stupidly outdated when it came time for an upgrade. By the time I took it back, the S3 was just about to be in stores. I actually returned it and went w/o a phone for a few days.
Yes, the S3 felt very big at first. It had that going against it for sure. However, I was already used to a touch keyboard so I was determined to keep an open mind about the size and at least play with it for the two weeks I had to return it.
I was very unhappy with the keyboard that came with it. UTTER TRASH...
I can't imagine that someone who loves a physical keyboard could want to keep the S3 for that horrible keyboard alone. I had read about Swype Beta, so I downloaded it to my phone ASAP. Have I mentioned I love Swype? I <3 it.
Ok, so after the keyboard situation was solved, that left only the issue of size. I can't say at what point I got over it, but I definitely did. Idk, I guess a few days of moderate use. So much so that I rooted by the end of the 1st week. I knew I wasn't taking that baby back.
I picked up my Samsung Reality from my desk the other day and turned it on. How ever did I use a phone with such a small screen? Lol It's also soooo thick compared to the S3 bc of the slide out. And, in all honesty, its small size kind of make it feel like a toy in my hand or something.
I have had my S3 for two weeks and one day. I think it's a pretty amazing phone. I don't miss a physical keyboard (but I'm sure that's bc of Swype). I am totally used to its size and have absolutely not problem at all using the phone despite my small hands. Given the choice between the S3 or a smaller phone with a physical keyboard...or even a smaller smart phone like the Blaze, I'd push you out of the way to grab the S3.
Sorry so long, but I just didn't want your wife to miss out on a really great phone due to lack of a keyboard and large size since they were the two huge things I had against the S3 and ended up totally getting over both. If you haven't taken it back yet, and still have some time on the return period left, maybe you can put Swype Beta on it and she can make an effort to use the phone with an open mind.
I hope that she's happy with whatever she ends on deciding on =)
i want a physical keyboard too...but all the phones with it don't have good specs...miss my g1 and g2 for it...
Not the answer your looking for but they do have bluetooth keyboards that are very small and compact if that might help

The Photon Q for sprint should be out soon with hopefully high end specs and a QWERTY if the rumors are true
This is a reply to Rowan fire... sorry I am not going to quote your post.
The whole open mind thing isn't going to work with my wife. She has a captivate now for the last year and a half and she thinks that one is too big, 4" screen. She is rooted running 4.0 and is pretty happy with it for now so she may wait for the next best thing.

I just picked up my note 2 from evo3d last night. Once I got home I felt a HUGE disappoint from leaving my 3d woth cm10 coming to touchwiz and how BIG everything is. Day two, im a little more at ease after some sleep.
My biggest issue is just how huge everything is. I know once I root it and change dpi down it may look more normal for me. Im used to using a small font with and small font settings.
However my biggest hurdle is how unstable this thing feels in one hand. I constsntly feel like I may drop it because the only way to truley be able to use one hand and access everything is to rest the phone on your four fingers while using your thumb to navigate. Versus having end of your other fingers having a sturdy hold on left side of phone like normal.
Using the one-handed option does help for typing and such, but its mainly not being able to reach notification bar while having the firm grip versus resting on four fingers.
Having a inner struggle weather I want to keep this or go exchange for the gs3 later today or tomorrow. I use my phone with one hand a lot so thats a huge issue for me.
Has anyone else gone thru this while switching too the note2? If so how long does it take for that too go away.
Also im curious as to what kind of stylus support aosp roms will have. I know it will work for touching the screen but I mean as far as default samsung note apps and such? I know I will be going back to cm10 on this or the gs3. But if we will lose a lot of stylus support then I dont reslly see a need for the note over the gs3 with only .7 inches of extra screen real estate.
Any input would be great! Thanks

So why didn't you go into a store and play with it BEFORE dropping all that coinage, getting home and then complaining about it afterwards? It's not as if you didn't have that as an option.
I went to a store today and spent some time with it. Currently have an S3 that i love. I would have no problem using a Note 2 as my primary device but i don't think i would want something that big ALL the time, hence i would prefer the S3.

Well I did play with it. The disappointment was short and mainly just like with going from anything you know well and are used to, to something new and unfamiliar. Once its rooted and I can change DPI that will resolve the elderly resolution issue.
AS I've actually had a full day to play with it I love it. Homestly the only issue I somewhat have is the unstable feeling while handling with one hand making long stretches with my thumb. Im sure after awhile longer, that too will pass.
Just ready to be on good ole cm10 again.
And as far as toying with it. I did, but you arent able to get a full accurate grasp on any of the phones with the bulky security piece glued too the back with the strecthy cord.

I feel you then. I have big hands and can balance the Note 2 fairly well in one hand.
On my S3 I have a nandroid of BlackBean 6 JellyBean (AOKP) that i was running for a while but i'll have to say that the new TWiz is very nice. I like the subtle changes to the UI systemwide. Currently running FreeGS3 JellyBean (Twiz ROM) and it's fantastic. Never expected a Twiz ROM to draw me away from AOKP.
Right now, any phone feels small to me.
Honestly, I can even go a BIT BIGGER than the note 2
Not wider, but longer.
You just get used to it.
Have you tried a different launcher? I too came from the evo 3d and now laugh quietly when I look at my wife's original evo. I use nova prime and cannot say enough about it. And go get yourself a case. I bought the Samsung case in the acces forum and got it today, not too much bulk and I can now sleep at night.

Just to address the size issue, I remember when I got my Evo 4G, thinking it was pretty nice but maybe too big. It took about a day to get over that. I always miss my previous phone for a day or two, but new phones always provide the benefit of new technology. I had the first Note version in blue and now got the Note II in white. At first I thought it was way too bright, but in a day loved it better than the first. I didn't think I would like the slightly narrower version, but find it fits better in my hand, and again, like the new technology. I am giving you my personal guarantee if you use it for a week, you will not go back. And you can fiddle with it, and eventually you will get cm10 or something newer. It's great.
I did the same exact thing. Except I first grabbed an sgs3. I love the note 2. It's never felt too large for me. I do have big hands but even so one handed text entry is suffering. I find swype style keyboards work best. As soon as SwiftKey releases their new beta ill switch to that. I enjoy SwiftKey for most entry but a split keyboard is a must in landscape. At this point I have 7 imes loaded so I clearly haven't found the perfect set yet. Stick with it, the note is hard to beat in all categories right now.

Just wanted to thank all of ypu above for the encouragement to stick with it. After finding out the phone couldn't take pictures while on phone and the lack of SVDO and only SVLTE (which isn't in my area until beginning of next year) I was dead set on returning it.
I think got a helpful tip that the camera can be fixed thru a small false to true value chane in the features xml.
I went to my cousins to toy with his gs3 and let him play with this before returning it. (Also note that talking to him on phone yesterday he said he didnt think he could manage anything bigger than his gs3)
Turns out the moment he saw it he started drooling over it. He wants one now! Needless to say I second guessed returning it just because of the lack of SVDO. So I guess I will be keeping it because im definitely starting to love this thing more and more.
So thanks again to everyone who said hang in there. Cant wait top see how this community is compared to the evo and evo3d community with the constant drama and disrespect towards devs.

If this phone can do SVDO, it would be the shizzn

One of the keys on the physical keyboard of the Desire Z (E key) has fallen. What is the best way to fix it?

I used a little dab (very, very, little) of super glue on my '.' period key. Seems to work still. Less is better.
good luck

Did the same thing....shame.....it problably wont last long since it is a commonly used key.
Please Project Ara bring me what I want: A QWERTY phone.
If not, Im going for the Nexus 6 I guess....
@riahc3
You would be quite happy with the relay, I know you have sounded skeptical in the past but its a great device, best with a keyboard (but the dz still wins in design and build)
If not the n6 will be a great choice, or even consider the oneplus one. Using it now and as much as I love keyboards this phone is amazing
Today the W fell off And I RARELY use that key....
Damn it.
My choices are
1: Get the Nexus 6 announced in a couple of days
2: Hope that Project Ara is all I dream for it to be.
**** the Nexus 6, just want to make that clear.
Keys sadly keep falling off every month or so.
W, E, O......sad times. Lets hope Jan brings us some good news.
