New to the Android world - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i switched from a crApple iphone to the fabulous evo 4g and let me tell you i dont regret it at all. I got my evo the same day it came out, couple of days later i found out about xda developers, got it rooted and since then its been like a rollercoaster, my evo became more than just a smartphone to me.
Anyways, lets cut the chase what im tryin to say is that there should be a nice guide for people like me that had no idea what rooting means and of course all the terms within like adb shell, nandroid, nand unlock, recovery, etc. If someone out there has the time it'll be really helpful. I know google is out there but i think it would be really nice to have all this information compiled in one place and what other place better than xda.

Wrong section!!

im just kidding.. well, you certainly came to the right place.. really just reading around the forums is the best knowledge your gonna get.. what information are you wanting to know about in particular? i knew nothing about android till the day i received my evo, well speaking modification wise! my wife had a hero which i enjoyed but didnt want to get deep into it since i was using a windows mobile device at the time.. but its always good to hear of an iphone user switching over to android!

Lol! At this point i dont really need that much help compared to when i made the switch, because its like you said, you go from forum to forum, Im just makin a sugestion to make it easier to newcomers.

in my opinion xda-developers is the best place to go for information because there is a mad number of members.. keep in mind if you ask a stupid question your gonna get an even stupider response.. you seem to know how the game is played so you shouldnt have a problem.. ppl dont like to spoon feed you here, but if you show that you need a little help here and there you shouldnt have a problem..

Got it, thx for the tip

have you tried reading any of the hundreds of threads regarding root and the 2.3 OTA?
Can a mod please post a sticky stating that there is no root yet for 2.3.3. These threads from all these ####### are getting old.

Are they actually making any progress with rooting the EVO or just saying it to get our hopes up?

I'm sure they are considering people are putting a bounty of $300+ to the first person ( dev ) who cracks it. On top of a lot of people are getting stuck into it and hints why we are seeing this posted a lot lately. But you must understand these people who do it have lives and families, this is just a hobby none the less.

These hobbyists you speak of are quite the obsessive kind. Many programmers that I know (it's pretty safe to label someone who's searching for an exploit to root a phone a programmer) can get pretty into their work. I know one time I spent sixteen hours straight at work looking through code just to find a single quote that was screwing up a SQL query.
Those sixteen hours were soon trumped by my coworker who spent a whole day at the office rewriting a single function.
How long have they been trying to crack the code?

So true. I'm so thankful to anyone who codes/themes/etc. I love the android OS being open source , I'm straight addictied to flashing and what not. Starting to theme myself a little bit , its great. But yes you have a great point but no the less my point is still valid. I'm still waiting as well since my dad and friends are wanting to root dude to ad free, wireless tethering , etc.

[Q] personel ROM

Who would I have to talk to to get a ROM made just for me and about how much would something like that cost?
A better investment would be to pick up some coding and making it your self in my opinion. But I don't know if anyone will make you a personal ROM because most roms out are made for the masses/consumer not for the dev.

Because he needs to be bashed with a question like that. Seriously yeah I would've said the same thing and tell him that really? A Personal Rom? There is already 1, simple to have a personal ROM its easy. Flash Rom you like out of all them customize to your liking (Kernel, Apps, Theme, etc...).
Set up everything like mail, etc...
What else is there needed to be said?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
lostsoul does have a point. you can take any rom for your specific running system,(bml) (mtd)? and just costumize to your liking.
what exactly do want in "YOUR ROM"?
I get what you bashers are saying lol.. I have tried different ROMs and themes .but there is always something wrong, missing ,not functioning or something I just don't like that a theme can't fix. By personal I mean a ROM that would have my name and maybe a girl shaking her ass in the boot animation(just an example) I like a few things from a lot of differnt ROMs and would like to see them all put together thats all..its cool forget I asked...

Welcome to life lol, nothing is ever right or working but one thing has something working and something else doesn't but benefits in other areas vice versa. We'll help you out but 1st bash haha. If you want something and something to work its a recipe for disaster and will never work haha. But you can try to put it all in 4 yourself. Just some practice and extra time is required think of it the time your using now ca be the time learning to do it is all.

Custom ROMS are generally private ROMS built by devs that get released publically. Your all being assholes for no reason. He doesn't feel like learning the **** himself and has offered to pay someone else with the skill to do so for their time and effort to create a ROM specifically built to his liking. Wtf is so dumb about that? He's not trolling anyone or asking for something ridiculous, and he's offering to pay for someone's time and effort, instead of demanding something for nothing. You all need to grow the hell up.

Were trying to help him out so he can have fun and do it for himself his own liking were not being rude by any means necessary plus were helping save his money, thats just ridiculous to pay for something that essentially is FREE. NO he isn't trolling which is good, he could benefit from it.

I've decided I'll do it for 100k. I'll graduate in 3 weeks then I can quit my part time job and just work on this full-time.
The OP obviously wasn't talking to ANY of the people who answered.
This post is clearly a bounty and if you're not upto it, then gtfo and stop trying to seem all high and mighty knocking people down all the time.
The op STATED he's cool with staying ignant towards ROM development and is willing to pay for someone with the know-how to do it up for him.
Op, there's plenty of developers who would be willing to take you up on your offer. Just gotta go shopping around for the non-masses ones because they all like to pretend they do their work to make people happy and don't want donations in the hope you will donate for their humbleness

And before you ask, there is no ICS, MIUI, CM, AOSP, or AOKP on this phone. Also, use the damn search for your answer! Now gtfo, noob!
Lol, just wanted to say that before you inevitably get flamed at some point for asking a question. Here's a friendly tip: a few users (not all, but a few, and they're very vocal) in this forum need attitide adjustments. Take everything lightly here and don't let those few discourage you from asking questions or helping others.
Welcome again!

XDA-developers is a staple site for me. I check for new roms/mods/etc. every day multiple times a day. I finally got around to creating an account now that I feel I might be able to help others from experiences I've had. More so I've been scared to join for fear of being accused of noobdom.
Rooted and rommed Mytouch 4G, G2x, Sensation 4G, Amaze 4G, and waiting on my Galaxy S2 to come back from Samsung for an LCD replacement so that I can get my flashing fix! (I've been dying trying to use a blackberry in it's week's absence...)
Anyway, it's great to see that a fellow new member was treated with such kindness. Hopefully I'll receive the same hospitality.
Also, as a CS major I hope to be joining the actual developers soon. Learning my way around java and the android SDK at the moment. Wish me luck!

Well if you want to get started I would say the easiest way would be to get an aio like mine here (There are others as well). Get your PC setup so you can decompile and compile apks and jars. Once you have that setup, I would start by looking around in the folders that it decompiles. This will help you learn where things are and how the apks work.
If you want to do theming you would need to know xml, how to edit images, and knowing java is always a plus.
Once you know where things are and feel comfortable editing apks, Then I would start learning the other stuff. ROM making, mod making, and tweaking will all get easier if you understand how the phone works.
Hope that helps get you started. Let me know if I can help you out with anything.
Shoot me questions if they pop up, can't always get back right away but I'll always try to help. Its been said before and sounds cliche, but read up. And I mean ALL over the net. The amount you learn troubleshooting your own problems as they arise(error messages etc) are invaluable and unfortunately can't be taught.
But for the other stuff, hit most of us up and you'll find help. Think I can speak for he majority of us on that one.

I wanna take an android programming class but current college I'm attending doesn't offer it and I tried learning on my own but never could get android SDK or eclipse to install my old laptop.... gots me a way better Asus now and I always help with anything I know but that's simple stuff like making bootanimations, where stuff goes in the ROMs ( but I don't know how to make my own), I'm always experimenting with my build.prop and other tweaks til I soft brick and have to dirty flash my phone, I flash to different carriers, different prls, etc.... just simple stuff I'll gladly help. If asked I'll be a tester.... but I can't quit build my own rom

Ya googling only can take you so far. Not the same as an actual Mentor. If that were the case we wouldnt even have schools anymore we would just tell our kids. "Hey google it!" And educational systems would be pointless....
Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it, so when I do have questions I can't find the answers to I am happy to have people I can go to. Although I have to put off until I get my own laptop around Christmas... soo you won't be getting anything from me for a while lol

I'm having a hard time believing this story. For all we know, your a thirteen year old kid who has found/stolen an s3 that has a pass code on it and trying to find a way to use the phone.
Whether your story is true or not, there's only one way to find out if doing a factory reset from the stock recovery will work, right?

bro im 32 year old man and would NEVER make up a story like that..
I can kinda see where his skepticism is coming from tbh. I know Ive had a few occasions where someone one would try to get help with something questionable by telling me some crazy, hardly believable story (some pretty out there too!).
Most times folks will just post their question and explain later if asked, so when we see a story like yours it does cause some to wonder about the legitimacy. Call it being gun shy I guess, but we just don't want to see the knowledge we share be used for immoral, illegal, or malicious purposes. (Yes, people do try to "trick" us, on occasion).
Considering your level of activity on xda, it does make it easier to trust you though. But try to understand that when you say you would never make up a story like that, there are plenty who would, and all we have to differentiate and decide is your username and our intuition!
And since you'd figure it out eventually anyway, yes a factory reset, from stock recovery, will reset the device to an oob state, including any passwords and other security measures. It'll also wipe internal sdcard where pictures and other personally important data are often stored.
Sorry to hear about all of that btw. Will keep you in our prayers. Take care.

Hi
I don't know why you would post about a personal death but yes when you factory reset and go back to stock it erases all of your current data.

Like I said, your story may or may not be true. Your post seems like some kid wrote it. Seriously, a 32 year old calling people on the internet "bro".
Sent from my SGH-T999 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
To be fair, lots of people on xda, older and younger, use "bro".
And I agree with the questioning of posting about any personal tragedy, as I have seen people use it as a cover of sorts or to entice an answer by tugging on the heart strings, but I have also seen people legitimately post these things, both as an outlet, and in anticipation of being asked why they are trying to do a certain thing.
I'm not making a call here either way as there really is no way to know. But it would be more suspicious to me if it were from a day old account with only one post.
I'm not trying to argue, defend or attack any of you btw. Just felt it was a point worth mentioning is all.

I owe you an apology. I wasn't saying you were lying, its just that the thread is a little suspicious to me and there's people out there that will go to any extent to get what they want. Sorry for the loss and sorry for jumping to conclusions.
