I have a branded HTC Desire - O2 UK with HBoot 0.83
I am new to android and I want to flash my desire to what it would look like if it was SIM free HTC Desire on Froyo (so that I can get future OTA updates) or a generic Android 2.2
Can any point me to the correct ROM please. Thre are so many here and I don't quite understand the nomenclature. I don't care if it updates HBoot as well.
Also, apart from looking at the screen, how can you tell if the screen is Amoled or S TFT LCD?
Thank you very much

Hi mate,
I'm not sure how to check what type of screen you have if you happen to have the HBOOT 0.83.
The screen is not so important (if you want FroYo) but more of the HBOOT version you have there.
I too am on O2 and didn't want to wait for O2 to release the OTA Update which I found (unless I'm wrong) will update my HBOOT version (from 0.80) to lock me out from Rooting.
If you want to do the same check out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=748618
Which looks like (have a read) will work with your HBOOT.
And:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
Which is a generic FroYo 2.2 with Sense UI and WILL NOT update your HBOOT version to prevent you being locked out from Rooting (in the future).
Also don't forget you need to update the Radio (mentioned in the post) which gave me a better reception and WiFi signal

iOSToAndroid,
When I first got my HTC Desire, it was unbranded, then after a Vodafone OTA, it got branded, just a big pain in the a**, a true nightmare. It took me a few nights to gather the info I need. Now my Desire is unbranded and Unlocked again.
I'm pretty much like you, new to Android, but this is what I did:
1. Get it Root
2. Downgrade the Bootloader (I downgraded to hboot .75)
3. Un-Root the phone by applying an official ROM (RUU)
The following are a few articles I used that helped me un-brand mine:

Hi all,
Feel free to shoot me down, send me to a thread or whatever
I've just bought a HTC Desire on O2 PAYG to replace my contract HD2. It is branded and locked to O2 (i'm on O2 so fine) but I would like to get the 2.2 update OTA for the generic ROMS. After reading A LOT of information on different sites I am confused as to whether I actually need to Root my phone or not to get a generic ROM?
If I do, my next problem is I have HBOOT 0.83 which doesn't seem rootable at the moment
Thank for your help/comments.
I'm in the same position.
0.83 is rootable by using unrevoked3, but it seems that you cannot flash any custom ROMs or debrand with it. At the moment there doesn't seem to be any safe option. You can downgrade HBOOT to 0.80, but this seems to break the phone's display (which may be recoverable, but it looks more than a bit risky).
One possibility is this - a recent RUU on shipped-roms (RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_T2_Radio_32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe) seems to contain HBOOT 0.83, so may work with a goldcard to debrand the phone, since O2's software is lower (1.20.207.3 I think). If that's successful it might be possible it might be possible to apply the OTA update (but this will make the phone unrootable).
Great! Now we have a fourth thread about rooting HBOOT 0.83!
Hi, I`m a complete NOOB when it comes to Android, had my HTC Desire a few days now, it came pre-instaled with Vodafone UK bloatware on it.
As far as I know it the OLED version, on box says model A8181
Currentley i have Software v1.24
Hboot v0.83
ALL on a sim locked to vodafone UK.
I was looking at a guide on a different forum for De-branding the Desire.
I have made a Goldcard already
It seems ok but have a few questions:
Is hboot v0.83 ok to begin with for the process ?, i thought v0.80 was the best one ?
I was looking at the Un-revoked3 guide....would the ROOT with that app be done first ?, OR Is it a NEW process after the de-brading ?
thanks
All you'll need is a goldcard. See:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741836
thanks.
Done the Goldcard, looks like the Hboot 0.83 (which I have) is ok from what I can tell, one of my main Questions,
Also can I just ROOT after Installing froyo update, is the unrevoked app ok?, will it mean Re-installing a ROM or does it `add-onto` an existing install ??
cheers.

Don't install Froyo as that'll flash Hboot to 0.92. unrEVOke now and flash a ROM from the Dev forum. There is a rooted stock HTC 2.2 there if you're just looking for Froyo + Root.
I'm using LeeDroid 1.8 ROM on my previously VF bloatwared Desire ('unrevoked' to root), very happy.
Ummm ok, I have tried loads of times to do the De-brand, apparentley the VF software v1.24 I have stops De-branding as it just times out the Bootloader...it eventually gives a `usb error 171` every time.
I tried with the phone set as both usb mode or sync mode makes no difference,
I looked into the Unrevoked 3.1 program and apparentley its not working with Hboot v0.83.
Code:

try this guide!
Is that 1 ok for OLED Screens like mine though?, also am I OK in ROOTING whlle it still vodafone BRANDED ?
ok....just read the guide linked, IF that works, will I be able to put Offcial HTC ROM + froyo update?, or does it have to be pre-rooted ROM ?
thanks.
You can download stock froyo Rom here and just use that

Hi there
I found a OTA URL for Orange branded HTC Desire.
here -> http:/ /fotadl.htc.com/OTA_Bravrange_CH-FR_2.22.71.2-1.19.72.3_P_release8xcr7nx2a68060l7.zip
Now I'd like to rebrand my device for warranty purposes.
Is there a way to install this OTA to my SLCD Desire (BB: 32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09, BL: 0.83, FV: 2.1-update1, SN: 1.21.105.2)?
Right now I've flashed this RUU:
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_T2_Radio_32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe
^ this one includes the SLCD drivers but no branding for orange
Can somebody tell me how I can use this OTA zip file to REbrand my Desire without having a corresponding Orange branded RUU?
Thanks..
You can't as the OTA is to update 1.19.72.3 to 2.22.71.2
You will need a nand backup of a rooted orange rom.
Flash that then remove su and superuser.apk then run the ota.
Or wait for an orange ruu to be leaked.
Assuming he/she has an AMOLED screen, otherwise they'll need to get one from someone with an SLCD screen
thank you for your fast replies.
waiting for a RUU to leak is not really an option. I don't think we will ever get a RUU for Orange Switzerland.
So I have to find a nand backup somewhere...
quite frustrated right now...
Hi,
I have a nand from stock (apart from root) Orange (UK) Froyo.
Im happy to upload it somewhere if needed.
Unfortunately, i dont have a dropbox or similar.....

Are you on an SLCD screen, though? If not it'll be no use to the OP
hi,
yes, i'm on an SLCD handset.
i have 4 nandroids i've made as dated below:
30/9 - this from when i first rooted after the 2.2 update
1/11
21/11 - from when i rooted a replacement handset from Orange
1/12 - from late last night before i applied the OTA and goosed my phone
im on a WWE ROM after last night as my phone wouldn't boot after the OTA. i didnt explore many avenues to fix it so i'm interested to see how we get on here.
@Eddy - thanks for making sure we all know how important Goldcards are, certainly helped me out at 1am this morning!
Mike
Hi everyone,
Can someone kindly give me a hand rooting my Desire HD. I have installed Visionary R14 but everytime I click TempRoot is says "Rooting Device" and about 30 seconds later the screen goes black then Sense reloads but device still remains unrooted.
Am I doing something wrong or is there any other way to root the phone?
Many thanks,
Dan.
What is the version of the software in your DHD? You need to downgrade if it comes with version other than 1.3.xx
The software version number is 1.84.61.2. How do I go about downgrading? Where can I obtain the software from?
Sorry for the amateur questions...
How about doing some reading in the android development side The stickies contain everything you need to know. You can find a downgrade guide there.
yo, dr9722.
i just recently rooted my phone too.
1st - downgrade to 1.32 (since visionary doesnt work on your current firmware)
2nd - then root.
this video makes it really clear
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkbmKLCkDWg
and watch part 2 and 3, although i think part 3 is for installing custom ROM, but you can be rooted with your stock ROM, like me .
CodeNameUnknown, this is exactly what ive been looking for. Thanks very much.
Im not going to get a chance to give it a go until Tuesday but will post an update then. Thanks again.

Downgrade, root, radio s-off, install WWE ruu.
Once u do that you lose root and recovery, so what u need to do is temp root and radio s-on.
And you should have a fully unbranded dhd

I am interested in unlocking my Orange branded Desire HD. The AMT looks helpful but I need to downgrade to 1.32. I found some instructions for this but the disclaimer at the top bothers me.
DO NOT USE THIS IF YOUR PHONE CAME WITH GINGERBREAD.

(it bricks the phone if your phone came pre-installed). Now I have two issues with this:
1) I did not care about android when I got it in February 2011 (the date probably means NOT gingerbread)
2) I sent it back to HTC in December 2011 because the GPS and proximity sensor were faulty. It came back working and the job sheet said something like the circuit board had been replaced, but like a n00b I could not find it when I searched when I realised how important it might be.
It came back with the same IMEI, if that helps.
So here is the question:
How can I tell if my Desire HD is a "shipped gingerbread" device.
I have root, ENG S-OFF, know how to run adb and fastboot but not much more than that.
I Guess Ur Using The Froyo Android 2.2 U Can Go To Settings,About Phone and check android version if its 2.2 then its froyo if 2.3 its gingerbread but in my opinion its froyo since you've routed it etc
Yes, sorry, I meant to say I am on Absolution 3.6, which is gingerbread, but what I'm running now doesn't tell me whether I'll be bricked if I downgrade.
i didnt get why u want to downgrade and downgrade to what?
As I say...

Oh I Get It You Can Do It Because u rooted ur phone and installed a custom rom si ur phone came with froyo my friend so u can procced to downgrading hope that i helped you
So you are saying you can't root the gingerbread Desire HDs?
No Cz Htc Have Made A Security For The gingerbread update for the dhd so it cant be rooted u will have to downgrade it to froyo to gain root
1) no need to go.through all this trouble. You are allready sim unlocked. All the rooting methods used gfree Wichita along with soff gives you simunlock aswell
2) GB. Is rootable using ace hack kit no need to downgrade
Edit I should add. Their is no.need to downgrade unless your phone is on the newer sense 3.0
