Hey guys, I've been having a look around various Roms on this forum and noticed they're advertised as supporting wireless-n which contradicts the official feature set from HTC. Is this possible through kernel updates including an improved driver Or is it just a false statement? It'd be incredible if wireless-n was possible! I hope this question wasn't asked a dozen times before, going through the search results didn't prove to be very useful many thanks in advance, Dennis Fisch

More information in this thread.
the chipset supports many things like 720p and N wireless. however HTC have to stump up the cash to use the features from the chipset maker., otherwise there not activated to save HTC money, thats why 720p became available, HTC decided to pay for the license.
N isn't enabled because of cost not hardware limitations.

It works and is included in many custom ROMs. I am currently using Pays 1.9 and it is workin. How it is done, I don't care

Ahh, I suppose that makes sense as to how it is possible to enable it through software. Thanks a lot for your responses, I think I might just try that Rom some time soon, probably after coming back from a vacation.

Well it seems to me that the WiFi N drains a lot of power. So on that note it is hardware limitation to some degree. I'd rather use WiFi G, and save on battery power.

I confirm for the battery drain when using WiFi N. Ideally I'd like a tool to switch the Desire from Wifi N to Wifi G and vice-versa on demand.

2nd that, I went back to a non-N version because subjectively it ate more battery. Interesting would be a direct comparison without moving the phone (same signal strength) between N and non-N versions.
I've noticed this as well... a tool to switch defo a must... N has it's uses but generally you just want to be on G and conserve battery until you really need the benefit of N speeds.
please excuse the question
How do you know if the ROM is running in N or G? I have looked in different places and can't find any information. I am using Pay 1.9

I just got this like the other day and it seems to be lacking in support, when I heard about this phone I was excited to get it...But now it seems like it doesn't have that much development, with other phones coming out. The only this is the smaller screen and weaker cpu/gpu compared to newer phones...This thing comes w/ 512MB Ram/Rom if im not mistaken, just like N1. If this is Oc'able it might go to at least 7xxx. Dumfuq is notorious for his G1 OC kernels, lets see what he can do for the MTS now...

I really like the phone's design, it sticks out from the other phones I had. it might not be the best thing in the market but it's defiantly a major improvement from my G1. Even on stock this feels a lot faster than when I had it oc'd to 614MHz.

I agree totally. This is a wonderful improvement over the G1. Handles things better too. When I got a text when I was watching YouTube on the g1 I would have a blank screen for like 30secs cause I had SMS popup then I could reply but the video wouldn't play I would have to start over. Not with this little power house those issues are gone.

Check the dev section. Im trying to pull together a dev team to port a modded froyo to phones that havent had a mention of froyo, and the dinc, desire, and evo. If there is one dev left, the slide is saved, if not, i gotta pick up official support for the slide.

Imma try. Im on xda alot, so i have lots of time to get this going. If worst comes to worst, i will maintain the port. So, you are getting a de sensed froyo woth some cool mods. I think we have a few here. I mean Wes and Eugene are here but may have gotten the vibrant and there are a few other new guys here and there. But they have said they will still work on the slide. I think whats holding alot of folks back is the lack of ota to use and port plus this baby is locked pretty tight still even after root but that won't stop anybody. I mean we don't even have a custom kernel or hard spl and it will take much longer because of the security. And, yes, cyanogen is working on his froyo port still and is having road blocks which is holding up future stable additions. It's a great phone still and am happy with slidemr1 v4 rom with a2sd and perflock off and set at a constant 600mhz. JIT would be nice like in froyo, would help a bit but stability and lack of 100% fuction in a2sd ports makes it hard to use froyo daily (and due to fact I'm an app horder). But yeah, the HTC blaze/emerald (the one with the qwerty kb) l will be tempted if things are still this slow by the time late autumn/early winter rolls around.
That's exactly what I am thinking. It is locked up pretty tight and hopefully our ota update to froyo will be a game changer for it and we can move forward.
Sent from my MR1 V4 Remix 3G using XDA App
I can say, that lack of leaks and ota is holding us devs back. If there was a leak froyo, i would be able to build jdfroyo with no problem. Hopefully i will be able to port something i will make for the gsm hero.

Hi guys! I'm wondering which is the best Radio ROM for my DZ. Currently I have the GPS problem, and Cell Standby is sucking a lot of my battery juice. Any advice? Thanks!
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using XDA App
Hey,
this is a question that has been debated over and over, to make it short though: There is no common consensus on the best radio. Usually the golden rule if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it should be applied.
As far as you're issues with gps and battery life go, with the given information it's really not possible to say, whether your phone's radio is actually at fault or if it's something else.
I'm currently using the radio that came with the official gingerbread ota for the desire z (12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M), it's been pretty good to me on all the roms I have tried since then.
Hmm ok.. I was hoping for some advise, maybe recommendations.. But thanks anyway

What do you want? Someone to hold your hand? Not trying to be a prick, but there is no easy answer. Just try flashing a new radio... maybe the latest release to start with. Using the PC10IMG method with the bootloader is very easy and actually pretty safe if you follow instructions. Try some out... if they don't work, you can always flash another one. Radios seem to be kind of random in how they work with peoples' phones.

Your best bet is to read peoples reviews in the radio thread and cross-reference their location/carrier with yours. There are many factorys (G2/DZ, location, carrier, etc.) that come into play so, a radio that I say is great may suck for you.

There are too many factors to tell you what radio will work best for you, depending on your location, who you use your phone, what ROM/modifications you use
having said this many find the latest T-Mobile radio the best (.19) of course I promise you nothing but for me it gives great battery life and reception.
There is a thread in the developers section with links to every radio for the vision, try a few out for a few days at a time and see what works best for you. There will also be a link and explanations of the benefits to matching some libs. Edkeys also has a thread on this as well, I suggest reading up a bit and running a few tests by yourself

changing radios in itself or having a different radio won't damage the phone, it is possible to brick your phone anytime you tamper with firmware, but unlikely so long as you read up and know what you are doing.
not by a computer so I won't send links but the search function works well, just search the dev section

well that's not always the case, sometimes gps will lock immediately still. its a good idea to wipe efs though, if you read through that thread and the other threads linked from it there will be all the explanations you need. but again flashing any one radio will not guarantee better reception, gps lock, or battery life, just most people find the .19 radio does

Maybe you're using "Best wifi performance" in advanced options (it makes your signal reception better) and like Jamekerr mentioned above it can be router issue (poor signal performance when many devices are connected). If that so you need to buy better antenna for your router. I don't believe it's a kernel/rom issue.

OMFG my friend! I have the exact same problem. NOt exact but since update to Jelly Beans, whenever my phone is connected to Wifi, the internet connection is COMPLETELY LOST 90% of the time.
I own a Zenbook Prime and from ur post that I realized the computer wifi is fine and all the problems started when I upgraded to Jelly Beans. Since then, I have to switch my Modem from MIXED (B/G/N) mode to B MODE Only.
Now I turned off Wifi on HOX and Wifi (Mixed mode) is working perfectly!!!!!!
Finally found the reason!!!!!
Hope they find a fix soon!
So glad that I'm not the only one having the current problem (and also the proximity sensor problem)

I have gave this some further testing. I can now confirm that the watch and app work with CM10.2 (Although it is a bit flaky). I have also tested with Beanstalk 4.4.2 which is so far working a lot better but the app does still drop the connection.
If you are comfortable flashing custom roms and don't mind losing HTC Sense, then give them a try. Just remember to backup your current rom and data, read ALL the instructions and be sure you know what you are doing first.
Going to give the latest nightly CM11.0 a test in about 5 mins too, so i will post findings here (mainly if it works or not). To be honest, i don't think I'm going to keep using a custom rom installed just for the sake of a watch. I am wondering though, what is so different in these roms that allow it work? If anyone knows, i wonder if a patched 4.2.2 rom could be created and if the app told to ignore the SDK version.
Bluetooth Low Energy thats the difference. For me its okay to use custom rom. But i want a stable conection and o am thinking to buy it or not for hox

Looks that way I'm afraid. So far, the most stable connection has been with Beanstalk ROM. I have just installed the latest CM11.0 nightly and again, app installs, connects to watch but for how long remains to be seen.
Wish the cookoo devs would just post the first version of the app they had working on the HOX to here. Maybe a solution could be figured out with the clever devs that are on XDA.
Pretty annoyed about it myself as when i had got the watch, it clearly stated their first version of the app works on the HOX and future releases would too. Can't even send the bugger back.
Update: CM11.0 also seems to be holding a fairly stable connection so far. Alerts seem to be working fine too.

I give up with this stupid watch, it's getting well punted on ebay, devs can't be bothered writing an app for BlueZ stack so they can rattle.
