[Q] ROOTING - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I need to know before rooting my desire. If i go the Rooting way, will the HTC Sense ROM still be there after rooting and will recovery mode still function?I have to be sure cos im not too familiar with all these android programming stuff. This is my first android phone and i get confused when i see different methods of rooting, flashing Roms and other stuff. Thanks Could you pls direct me to the most useful step by step instrution for rooting and keeping HTC sense

Yes use Unrevoked 3 to root. It will install a custom recovery and the stock rom is still there but you have root permissions now.

once rooted, will you still be able to install an official OTA update from HTC onto the phone?

i've rooted my originally unlocked and unbranded desire but would like confirmation that i'll still be able to install an official OTA update from HTC when the new improved version of Froyo has been by them. Thanks

nope you won't, use one of modified rom's.

You will not be able to install an official OTA update unless you un-root. There are a no of modified Roms out there which apparently are basically rooted versions of Froyo....so if you install one of these you pretty well get your cake and eat it, i.e. you will have installed a version of Froyo which is almost OTA pristine but is rooted. I understand the neophyte Rom is one of these, as is this one:

I can confirm you will need to manually update after doing this

fresh 0.5.3 to ota 2.2

hi just wanted to know if i can update to the ota 2.2 from without running to problems?? don't care if im gonna lose root access.
i beleive fresh blocks the OTA so you may have to manually update. if it lets yuo download the ota through the settigns then you should not have any problems.
As a note fresh and many others already have 2.2 roms using the new ota out. if rooted you may want to grab one of those since currently thre is NO WAY to reroot your phone on 2.2

Correct,do not upgrade manually, just flash a 1.47 based rom and then the newest Fresh 3.0.1

NO NOT GO TO THE HTC WEBSITE, just flash any 2.2 based rom
either would be ways of manually updating it. I just ment that you cant get the OTA automatically. So you would want to download either the HTC update (killing root chances) or root and download a rooted stock and flash it giving you the best of both worlds.

[Q] update to 2.2

hello,
i have a desire with a 1.15.405.4 software, once in a little while i get a popup saying there is an update available (i keep saying no because i want to make sure everything is backed up).
however today when i checked for an update it says that the phone is up to date. how could that be, does it beeing rooted have anything to do with it?
how can i update to 2.2?
thanx,
lidar
Root your phone and install custom rom or official rom

If you're rooted you can't update. You need to be unrooted to install an OTA. If you're already rooted just get a new ROM based on 2.2

[Q] how do i update to 2.3 when it comes out

this is probably a noob question but this is my second android phone and the first one was already rooted so i didnt to update OTA.
Anyways i have desire z from bell unlocked on fido and not rooted so when android 2.3 is out for this phone can i get it OTA, do i have to rooted just to update it, or do i have to switch to bell to update it?
I'm sure the update will be here on the forums before you get any OTA.

Oh i dont need to root my phone to update from the forums?
If you leave your phone how it is, on the stock ROM, eventually you should get a 2.3 OTA update.
But custom ROMs will be available here on the forums with 2.3 way before then. If you want one then you will have to root and S-OFF.

No. I pushed the G2's OTA from my sd card and I wasn't rooted. Like steviewevie said you're most likely to see a custom rom with the updates before any OTA hits a G2.

And if you have a Custom Sense ROM installed, you don`t get the
OTA Update or rather can`t install this!
Custom ROMs don`t like OTA keys, right?

That's right. But that shouldn't be a problem, because a custom ROM will almost certainly get a 2.3 update before any 2.3 OTA comes out.
Root it now, while you still have the chance!
You can count on the next OTA update taking away the emmc reset vulnerability exploited by wpthis.

[Q] Install An Official Update

I have rooted phone HTC Disare and when come out official update 2.3 , can i update it , i now lost my root but phone be working correctly ?
You mentioned you lost your root?
might be a safe bet to install the RUU if you want the official and are rooted...?
or install a custom rom version of it
I know that I'd lose my root when I install official update 2.3 but phone be working correctly any brick ?
I guess there's always a chance.
if you want to install an official rom on top of a rooted/custom rom then I'd guess RUU is the safest way

[Q] Advice on getting 2.3 on my rooted G2?

Last November I rooted my T-Mobile G2 using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965&highlight=[guide]
I also installed Clockwork Mod.
I did not install any ROM, and I'm currently running otherwise-stock Android 2.2, build 1.22.531.8. I have ROM backups from Nov. 21 and March 21.
I'd like to install the 2.3 update (I've gotten the notification, but it won't execute, obviously), and have spent the last couple of days absorbing the various un-root guides posted here and around the tubes. The best un-root method appears to depend on which method was used to root the phone.
I've downloaded the PCI10 1.19.531.1 image, the stock_root image, and the stock recovery, and looking at the best way to move forward.
Is it necessary to undo all the modifications (S-off, HBoot, Recovery) before the update will self-apply?
If so, which un-root guide would you recommend for my phone?
Also, I'm running alogcat to try to get the download link - if I get that, should I try to update using Clockwork?
Thanks in advance.
Well currently there is no sure-fire way to root the OTA 2.3 release, so if you do choose to unroot and take the OTA you won't be able to get rooted again.
If you want 2.3 and still want to be rooted, you're best off either waiting for a pre-rooted OTA build that you can just flash to and not have to mess with the actual OTA, or you can use one of the AOSP-based 2.3 ROMs in the dev section.

Thanks.
But assuming I am OK with losing root, does anyone have a recommendation for which "back to full stock" guide to use?

You're okay with losing root only if you're okay with losing any of the features you use that required you to root it. If you rooted in order to overclock, you won't be able to anymore; if you rooted to get rid of the bloatware, you won't be able to anymore.

Now I'm not sure if this applies to all gingerbread otas, but you should always be able to go back again if you need to, since there's now a way to downgade and subsequently achieve root: Downgrade
OP:
I agree with martonikaj - I am doing what he suggests - just wait for someone to release a rooted version of this OTA update!

Yep, there's really no reason to get ancy and waste your time unrooting just to get a manufacturer release of 2.3, when you can have completely bone stock AOSP 2.3 right now and still be rooted.
And if you want the pre-rooted OTA version, you'll be able to get that soon too.
Thanks.
