How to tell if my phone is rooted - bought off craigslist

Some questions for those who know rooting:
- I just got an HTC desire off of someone from craigslist. It is unlocked cause I'm running it on AT&T in the US.
- Its a Telstra a8183 version with AT&T's US 3G bands but all the Telstra branding is removed and it looks to be running stock android (latest 2.1 official version).
- Does this mean that whoever removed the branding must have had to root the device to
do so? i.e. is my phone already rooted? How can one tell?
- And if it is rooted, is it rooted for life? Can something I do accidentally un-root it?
And now that it is rooted (if it is rooted) what's the benefit? I will search for this but just thought i'd throw it in there
Thanks to whoever answers.
Go to settings and about phone if it rooted or not. And see for your self!
use adb and see if you have superuser

So I go into Settings, About Phone and then... I guess into Software information right?
Here is what it says: I just don't know what part here tells me whether its rooted or not:
Firmware version: 2.1 - update1
Baseband version: 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2
Kernel Version: 2.6.29-82821fb5
[email protected] #1
Build Number: 1.21.405.1 CL172503 test-keys
Software Number: 1.21.405.1
Browser version: Webkit 3.1
So how do I know if I'm rooted? or if I'm running a stock rom or a custom rom?
Should I consider my phone (originally a Telstra branded) a branded phone or a non branded phone now? I know its unlocked cause i'm using it on AT&T in the US.
Help will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Install Titanium backup and see whether or not it starts nagging about root . If you can make backups: you've got root!
If not, the app will tell you it needs root access!
A bit cumbersome perhaps, but it gets the job done!
edit: Oh yeah, it's possible to un-root the phone again. E.g. by flashing an official HTC ROM on it again, then you will have to root again as far as I know!
Just look for the "Superuser permission" icon in the App drawer (All Programs menu)... if it's not there, then you are obviously not rooted.

Ok I looked and I don't have "Superuser Permission" in my app drawer. So does this confirm that I am not rooted?
But then howcome all the telstra branding is removed from this phone if it isn't even rooted? Oh I get it, maybe someone rooted it, and then installed a stock HTC desire ROM. Could that be it?
Does the "about phone" information that I have pasted above, tell you anything useful?
by the way, thanks a lot everyone for the answers. they really help.

That's probably it, either someone would have rooted the phone and installed a generic (unbranded) ROM onto it as your firmware version is x.xx.405.x - the '405' means you have an unbranded phone.

Correct... you can un-root your phone by installing your original stock RUU as this will remove root.
Great. Thanks everyone for the help.
This is confusing, I have super user permissions on my desire but i downloaded and ran titanium back up and it said my phone it not rooted.
Can anybody help me please.
LINUX FFS...
Just download a Terminal Emulator and type: su ... If the return is "permission denied" you aint got root...
Easy peasy

[Q] Evo Rooted need help Please

I recently bought this phone from a guy on craigslist since I could not pick it up anywhere in my are or via sprint.com
Anyways when I picked up the phone and checked it out booted it up it loaded a screen that brought me here... XDA Developers EVO 4G. I asked the whats this and he said that the phone was rooted.... I have no idea what that means and what to do now with the new 2.2 froyo update that just came out. From what I have heard and gathered from here is that it is possible to brick my phone.
I need some serious help with this issue.
Here is what I see in the about phone/Software Information
Firmware Version
2.1-update1
Baseband Version
2.05.00.06.10
Kernel Version
2.6.29

Software Version 1.47.651.1
Browser Version
Webkit 3.1
PRI Version
1.34_003
PRL Version

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I would like to update to the 2.2 and restore the original software.
Sorry
Just noticed this section of the forum is for development. Mods please move my topic to the appropriate area thanks.
So you want to lose root? Or you just want stock 2.2 Rooted?
I would like to go back to the stock set up. But wouldn't mind doing the 2.2 rooted but I am afraid I will brick my phone.
It's not very easy to brick your phone. This was the first phone I've ever rooted and these devs make it very easy. I would say if you're already rooted you should play around with some of the 2.2 roms on the development section. As long as you read the instructions correctly you should be fine. there's ways to restore your phone to a previous setup.
You can go back to unrooted by why? It is very simple to load a stock froyo rom that it rooted. Read some pages here. You will be able to use wifi tether for free and have 55 frames per second making the phone snappier. The hardest part is done for you aka the rooting process. BTW Sprint bricked more phones than people that tried to root there phone. Rooting does not cause brick. Bricking phones happens mostly when pulling the battery while the phone is updating or flashing a new rom. Good Luck hope you stick with the root. Because you will want it rooted later lol
Edit: Did I mention way better battery life than you will ever get with any of sprints/htc roms
you wont brick your phone, seems you are rooted and all set to do all you have to do is flash a custom or stock rom of your choice. PM me and ill help you out

^ what he said I've only heard of people bricking their phones when flashing radios and even that is very easy to do.
I mean flashing radios is easy
Many +1's to ifly4vamerica He took the time to work on this issue with me via PM's. I have to say I put my phone and faith in his hands, all is well and he delivered. There is no question that if I need some help I would ask ifly4vamerica again and recommend him to others.
Thanks again ifly4vamerica
No worries, glad to help. Have fun!

Good question about installing 3.29.651.5

I'am currently on a rooted 2.1 software 1.32.651.1 i rooted my phone from 2.2 but i didn't update to the original rooted 2.2 because you have to change your recovery to do so. I was told if i change my recovery that sprint will void my warranty on my evo so i was wondering if there is another way to go about putting this update on my evo such as changing the name of the update to pc36img and try to flash it from the stock recovery using fastboot or any other way if its possible to so.
also if i were to change my recovery to clockworks can i change it back to the stock android recovery if i had to ever send it back to sprint?
Well as far as voiding your warranty...that has already been done when you rooted in the first place whether or not you flashed a custom recovery but if you wanted to do it that way, your best bet would probably be running the RUU for 2.2 and rooting that once again from stock with one of the tutorials on here
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
not really i have a program that i run to put me back on stock 2.2 if i ever needed to send my phone back to sprint but i dont know if it would change my recovery back to the stock one if i changed it and ran that program. I already know how to root the phone i been doing it since the g1 came out but thanks though. come on people help me out here
hello can anyone help me with this question or can somebody send me the name of somebody that might know so i can pm them?
There's a thread somewhere that says sprint can tell you if you've rooted before even if you revert back. Also I think that they can tell ota because there's been reports of sprint calling rooted users and letting them know they know. And its my understanding that any root void warranty so I suggest just do your best not to eff up and have fun.

[Q] Newbie telus SGS2X owner please help.

Well after a few hours of searching these forums I have learned allot. I am new to android I switched from a blackberry. Now as any eager new phone owner would do I jumped in and rooted my telus galaxy s2x the first day i had it without doing anywhere near enough research. I then had to leave home for work for a long time and decided that I should return my phone to bone stock and start fresh with all the things i had learned. I have scoured these forums and the internet looking for the stock telus rom and kernal. I found links to both but so far have been unable to download them. Dead links? i have odin and have read the guides but without the software i am stuck. So i decided to register and post. now i just hope that someone will take pitty on me and my undeniably mis guided android antics. my current phone info is:
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
Now as far as i know I only rooted the phone trying to remove the telus junk and useing LBE privacy gaurd for permissions. No ROM or Kernel tweaking. I am currently running Avast security to but am haveing doubts as to its usefullness. Hope that someone can point me in the right direction and thanks for your time!
The thing with the security, is that its rather hard to have a virus on Linux due to the nature of the system.
Without Root access, there is no access to system files.
I do not run Avast, and have yet to run into issues. Just know what you are installing and what you are granting root access.
First of all, you don't need to go back to stock rom and re-root again if you are willing to use a custom rom. Because, rooting related files resides under specific to your /system and /data directory which are already replaced when you install a custom rom and do a factory reset.
Moroever, if you go back to stock by restoring an original nandroid backup you will most probably like to loose CWM recovery. You probably wouldn't want to double flash CWM if you are going to root your phone again.
What I can recommend you is,
1) After you backup your stuff, do a wipe data/factory reset from CWM. That will allow you start fresh
2) Then, based on what you want to do:
a) If you want to install a custom rom:
Look for the dev forum and choose whatever you want. I am currently using Raverx3x BLACKEDITION ICS and it is awesome.
b) If you want to stick with original rom with root access:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1356739
Let me know if I couldn't answer your question.
Thanks
So i did find the stock rom and wiped all data and did a clockwork wipe as well rerooted the phone. So now i am bone stock. Again thank you for all the help. I am going to go with a custom ROM and from the reading i have done they all seem fairly good. Now I am just curious about custom ROM's and how well they work with lets say google play apps as well as some of the others you can get such as LBE. I dunno why but my phone when plugged into the comp wont start the auto play for usb storage and wont show up in the computer tab? weird. unless i run kies or start odin. then the auto play pops and i can see the usb. then windows tells me there is corrupt data on my external usb and if i scan it it closes all the usb stuff and seems to reset itself? i dunno i think that is a comp issue not so much phone. I guess my biggest issue is compatibilty with apps and custom ROM's and the like. Also if I flash a custom rom will that take care of the insane amount of telus and google crap. I dont really need most of what the phone came with but i am leary of deleting apps and system tools that are on the phone. I dunno totally new to android and in quite over my head. more reading i do more questions i have haha.
Idk if that was a phone app thing...
But for future, can you break up those huge paragraphs? Its hard to absorb all that information.
Anyways, I've never had an issue with computer connectivity... Might want to reboot the computer? That's a start at least

I will again suggest ravers rc8 ics rom. I havent seen any issues other than missing wifi calling. No bloatware at all. Rare FCs...
Btw I amnot sure 989-d is also supported by that rom, but worth trying definitely

What modem are you using ? the original T989D's is KJ8 I think... ?
I was using it also but only up to RC6 until I switched to Darkside.. it has a t989 kernel but unfortunately required an ICS modem. After I flashed the Tmobile modem, I realized that I no longer have 4g. Its a price I am willing to pay for now.
EDIT: Turns out the modem is fine - only a bug in the ROM that does not display the 4G icon.

I currently have the basic stock ROM unlocked on Koodo so I'd prefer to have a stable wireless signal especially with the tethering hot spot... I think my phone has the KJ3 but you guys have KJ8 modem?
Model number: SGH-T989D
Android version: 2.3.5
Baseband version: T989DTLKJ3
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
Build number GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
(pure stock?)
How is the GPS in the Ravers ICS ROM? I basically need a functional GPS and mobile access point (tethering) to work amongst something stable while not being crippled.
I have flashed my old Captivate to the Cognition 4.1 ROM but am definitely a noob to my new SGS2 T989D which is quite a pleasant upgrade

[Q] SuperSU not allowing binary update

I have had this phone (HTC 4G LTE) rooted previously but reverted it back with RUU. I decided that after using Jelly Bean for a bit I would re root this phone. Everything seems to be working great, when apps need superuser access I can give it. The problem is when I open the SuperSU application a message window pops up saying "The SU Binary needs to be updated", I click continue and the phone just resets. So I cant go in and deny access or grant, unless asked by a program..
So far I have tried going into recovery and clearing the cache and dalvik cache to no avail. I read online to install superuser and grant supersu access, which makes no sense to me but I tried it. I also tried downloading a new zip of it and installing it again in recovery.
I have read in a couple places that some other have had this problem but nobody came back with a solution..
I am by no means an expert just a person that likes to play with their toys in their spare time. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh not sure if this helps;
Software version: 3.15.651.16
Android version: 4.1.1
HTC Sence version: 4+
HBoot: 2.09
Head over to the EVO 4G LTE Q&A section (you're in the OG EVO Q&A section) and post your question there. I had the same problem running Viper's odexed JB stock rooted ROM, but since I've switched to MeanBean it hasn't been an issue. Also, if you look in the SuperSU app itself you should see that it is version 0.99, which is the latest version as I understand it.
