i imagine not without reburning the radio or whatever, with a custom image (not the OS ROM). I think I read somewhere that the IMEI could be changed, but only if you use a certain ver of xdatools, and if you had a certain bootloader????? :roll:
But why would someone want to do that?

Your IMEI is 15 digits, the 2 extra digit exists as an identifier for your Service Provider only.
This is why you see 15 digits IMEI in your device information, but when you request the info through your Service Provider, they return you 15+2 digits.
Forgive me, but I don't see the sense of 'removing' the 2 extra digits???

Well, first off, my IMEI is 15+2 regardless of whether I'm looking at it in Device Information or requesting it using *#06#.
The reason I want to get rid of the two extra digits is so I can change the IMEI using XDAManipulator. (Before some of you out there jump on me about how changing the IMEI is illegal in certain countries - Yeah, I know, it's illegal in the U.K., Australia is going to make it illegal, I don't know about the U.S. - haven't seen evidence beyond people saying "it's illegal", but the bottom line is, I don't really care. So don't bother spouting off and sounding holier-than-thou.)
As for why I want to change it, it's not the one listed on the back of the device, and as far as I understand, were I ever to have a claim, they'd check the IMEI listed on the back of the device and when it doesn't match, they'd shoot me down.
So, my original question stands, is there any way to remove the two extra digits?

I still see no reason to remove digits if you are using manipulator. Just put the new number in.

IMEI change problem
Okay. I don't know what the problem is with this thing. I thought that I couldn't change the IMEI because of the extra 2 digits. But I then was able to get my 2nd XDA working and discovered that it ALSO carries the extra digits. And has the same ROM and Radio versions. BUT, I can edit the IMEI on the 2nd XDA.
So, any suggestions? Any idea as to why I can change the IMEI on one XDA but not the other, despite both having the SAME ROM and Radio? I'm at a total loss.
If it helps, the ROM is 3.14.40 ENG and the Radio is 6.18.

Can't find Xda Mnipulator
Hey guys. Can't seem to get a hold of a copy of XDA tools, or XDA Manipulator, the download section won't load for me... Anyone have an old copy they could send me??

As stated here the 2 extra digits are used on "some" networks as a check sum, removing these are technically changing the IMEI which is illegal anywhere. You will gain absolutely nothing by removing these digits :?

If he had read the previous posts, he would have seen that I already said:
A. Not to bother if you're going to act holier-than-thou,
B. At the time of the original post, it was not illegal in the US, I don't know if it has since been made illegal in the US,
C. The IMEI is not the one listed on the back of the phone. Sometimes when a ROM is flashed it resets the IMEI - why, I don't know.
ALSO,
I already figured out that it is simply a checksum. (No, I didn't say it, but I did discover that my other XDA I also had the 2 extra digits, which I did mention, therefore I realized that I didn't have to remove the checksum digits.)
AND,
As for changing the IMEI being "illegal anywhere," did some world government take over and make sweeping laws making IMEI changing illegal everywhere while AT THE SAME TIME totally failing to make any news whatsoever? Wow, and the White House can't even manage to spy on American citizens without someone leaking it...

Now, since someone was kind enough to dig up this old topic, I'll repeat my earlier request for any USEFUL suggestions as to how to change the IMEI on the XDA with the wrong IMEI. It's the wrong IMEI (that is not the one on the back), and if I ever need to make a claim, I would like to have all the ducks in a line. Or at least the right IMEI.

What exactly is Bootloader mode and how do I get into it? I red somewhere that i had to press the power button on my xda2 and then soft reset... but this seems to have performed a hard reset.

Bane, why have you posted this question in *this* thread? This thread relates to IMEI numbers.
Da(s)h, chill out man. The reason for IMEIs changing is to change the identity of a stolen device. If your IMEI is 'wrong' then you may find that the correct IMEI is registered as stolen and barred from networks in your country. If you have aquired your device in 'good faith' I suggest you leave well alone.

I know that the primary (perhaps) reason for changing the IMEI is to change the identity of a stolen device. I would argue (successfully) that it isn't the ONLY reason, and my need to change the IMEI is a legitimate one, given that I know the device isn't stolen, and the original IMEI isn't barred. I just want it right so that if I ever have a claim on the handset policy I don't have to deal with the garbage of, "Well, the IMEI that shows up on our records is XYZ and the device you sent to us has the IMEI of ABC on the back. We're not going to replace your XDA."

Back to the IMEI issue, if I wanted a quick solution, I could simply change the IMEI of my second XDA, use it for a while, drop it in traffic, then transplant whatever part got broken into the XDA with the mucked up IMEI, and THEN make a claim, but that would be flat-out insurance fraud, and I'd rather have a legal method to deal with the IMEI issue. Acutally, I guess dropping it in traffic would be bad, cause then the motherboard might get damaged and then I'd have two problem XDAs. One dead and one with the wrong IMEI. Anyway, you guys get the idea, but my point is that I want a non-fraudulent method.

I seem to remember reading that one of the unlock tools in this forum can change the IMEI.
I would actually assume that the case had been switched out on your device, IMHO.... so if any of the little warranty stickers inside are broke, it won't matter for your insurance anyway: opening the device voids warranty.......
But then again, I don't know everything.

My Trinity was stolen out of my car after my window was broken. I reported to ATT and the SIM card was in-activated right away. However, they acted "dumb" and refused to put a flag on the Trinity's EIM# as theft/stolen. I spoke to three different representatives without any satisfaction. I KNOW for a fact that if someone has an unpaid balance, they would flag BOTH your SIM and EIM from being used. SprintPCS will flag a stolen phone for you, but ATT will not from my experience.
One of the representative told me, "What difference does it make? You no longer have the phone..."
The second representative said, "I don't understand what you want me to do. You already got a replacement phone." (I'm actually using one of my old cell phone.)
The third representative said, "Your initial question is in reference to reseting your email. I have assisted you with that issue. I don't know anything about stolen phones."
Keep in mind that I explained my situation to all three representatives about my break-in and about using my EIM# to prevent someone from selling or using the phone for new service.
In a competitive cellular market, I guess ATT does not care if you use a stolen phone to get new service--it's one more account for them.
Please beware of ATT.
GPS Theft Tracking Software
It's for this very reason that I would HIGHLY recommend GPS tracking software for your phone.
Mobile Justice is a free Open Source version, and there are other PAY alternatives.
Mobile Justice monitors your phone for a SIM change, or waits for you to send your phone a specially coded SMS message. When it recieves it, it will do one of a few things.
1. Pop up a message you select on the screen of the missing phone "Hey Dirtbag, Gimme Back My Phone" or whatever you choose. (Aside from the fact that this might cause them to throw the phone away, I also would rather not let them know I'm coming. I want to knock on his door, look him in the face, and demand my phone back! As soon as he's finished changing his drawers. )
2. Send the GPS coordinates of the missing phone back to you.
3. Both 1 and 2
I just ran a test with this software and it's AMAZINGLY accurate! I typed the RAW coordinates into Google Maps, and it showed not only which house the phone was in, but which room in the house it was in, even when I moved it around. VERY COOL!!!

This software monitors for a SIM card change and automatically sends the phone's NEW Phone Number and SIM Info to predetermined phone numbers that you choose. It does all this in the background so the thief knows nothing.
Mobile Justice can also be setup to be unnoticeable.
Of course, if they do a "Clear Storage" or Flash a new ROM, then neither of these programs will be there to work anymore.

this was a big problem in the uk, but phone crime has really dropped due to the phone and sim getting blocked as soon as reported here.

such a shame your handset was stolen. i'll presume you had this hidden from view when left in your car?
just thought i'd mention blocking the IMEI only prevents that handset from being used in that country providing the service providers have an agreement amongst themselves and will not prevent the phone from being used abroad (unless under agreement too).
Its also (easily) possible but illeagl to change the IMEI.

Yes, that's why I mentioned it in my first post. I would love to find a way to burn it into the rom too. Then they would have to flash a new rom to remove it.
Also, to test it, just send yourself an SMS with "your code +g" give it a few minutes to warm up the GPS and it will send you the phone's cords.
Well hope the memory card wasn't too expensive.
Damn! they'll just send a kill handset command through the sim. Not a lot you can do about preventing someone from changing the IMEI on your phone. It's gone, be thankfull you will get a replacement. Some people dont get insurance and pay for it big time.
BUT I had no idea Mobile justice was around. This should be a compulory addition for all cooks out there. Your phone is going to be a little easier to find if this is installed.
there are quite a few programs like this. Others are "Ultimate Theft Alert" and W.I.M.P - Where Is My Phone"
I find ultimate theft to be the best.
These items also dont show on installed programs list so the only way to get rid of them is to hard reset.
EDIT: Also, be mindful to put someone elses number to be messaged as your sim will be stolen... has been done before!

I had some research yesterday, yet I still can't find a proper answer to most of my questions about the following subject. Hoping some of the experts here can contribute some of their knowledge and hopefully I will edit this thread to a guide, or at least spare others the need for wondering around the web as I did.
Well, Few days ago I turned off my phone, and it wont turn on or response to any physical key combination, usb connection (Except for charging the battery) or even that famous Samsung jig (301KΩ Between pin 4 and 5 on the usb connection). It is not recognizable by any device while connected through usb interface. It is permabricked. The worst thing that can happen to a phone while the hardware is intact.
Although the name indicates otherwise, some things can be done in order to get the device working again.
It is a process in which the phone's main bored is exposed, than a special device (e.g riff box) is connected to certain areas on the pcb that were made that way for the initial configuration of the phone back in the factory. The pinout of the connection varies in each model, but the interface is the same and called "Jtag". Than, that device connects to a pc through usb interface.
So the first step would be to get that device and to connect it to both pc and phone's motherboard through a certain pinout that is mostly hard to get. You'll need a driver for that jtag flashing device and a compiled file which you would like to flash in to your phone. I don't know if that file is specific to each model or to the certain chip the phone is using (Can different models with the same chip be flashed the same way? Reply if you know and I'll edit it here).
By what I know, after flashing that file the phone will be accessible through usb interface for further flashing of the rom.
Alternatively, There are some companies that offer that kind of service. I couldn't find any who work with T989, and prices for that kind of service.
I would like to have as much information as possible and maybe eventually I'll be able to get my phone fixed. In that case I'll add some photos and document the process.

don't pay attention to that guy he like to troll every where he goes. Try to google search for mobile tech or Adam Outler, and check if he get the Jtag service for our phone. If I'm not wrong the charge for the Vibrant was $50.00 plus shipping and handling. I hope you can fix your phone.

Searched, and yet no result. Sending the phone to the U.S is quite risky. I have no idea how they're intended to pack it before sending it back. I would rather doing this in Israel.
I saw on ebay several devices associated with Jtag. the price starts from 10$ for a simple usb dongle, through 30$ devices, which is the price of most of the jtag devices I found, to the 150$ riff box that is associated with phone unbricking.
By what I know Jtag is a simple serial protocol. I just need sort of "bridge" to translate the logic 1's and 0's with the right voltage level and certain clock speed to a usb interface or even RS232. How expensive can that be?
I also contacted several ebay sellers which offer a jtag repair service. they all answered this model is not supported.
I would go to Samsung labs in Israel and see what they can do to get it working.
I just thought to invest 20$, get that sort of device and to get it done by my own.
Another issue is the pinout. The pinoput of the Jtag connection is not shown in any website, so I have no way of knowing how to connect on this specific PCB.
Last thing I need is that new bootloader I can flash, and a software to flash it through. Where can I download it?
About the reason for bricking the phone, I have no Idea. As I said, last time I've installed new rom was more than a week prior to the incident. I've used some overclocking app mostly to underclock my phone, cause it drained the battery like hell before, even while it was running on stock and after changing the rom several times.
I also used some usb otg device which worked normally, but was not plugged to the device even few hours before it was bricked.
Hopefully we can figure out the cause of these permabricks so we can prevent it from happening to more people.

I gotta say, this is quite alarming. That the phone can just hard brick itself like this spontaneously.
I've had some scary experiences with the phone myself. Like a couple of random reboots that required the long power press for the phone to power back on. At least it always came back on.
I'm also from Israel myself so a similar scenario can bring me to the same situation as you.

- the manual may cover schematics for jtag device.
Been flashing phones since the Razr and never bricked a phone I couldn't repair myself. That is until I tried to flash my GSII back to stock through odin. Sent it to Samsung and they had to replace motherboard. Now I'm a little nervous about using odin.

I recommend splurging on the $2-3 for a jig, I have had moments where I thought I was SOL & the jig saved my arse.

Did you solve your problem?
I was looking at using QPST
QPST is a program often frowned upon here at xda. It is commonly used to flash phones, and has little to do with android coding. The software is made for Qualcomm (or by them) and this device has a chip from them in it. This has tools for building and installing bootloaders and partition tables. Our device after a hard brick (and still serviceable by JTAGing) has a com port open still and if you load the driver in windows you will see a port number as others here on XDA have said. The driver allows ODIN to see the device but not connect. QPST does connect, but I have not attempted to flash anything to it since I have not built any files to load. I'm kind of stuck creating the needed xml that makes the partition table and headers and file that are to be loaded to partitions. This is really a softbrick, in my opion, but nobody has the knowledge for this level of building and coding, with this tool, here at XDA. If somebody does, it may make those selling JTAG services mad, but that would mean we could fix our phones on our own. On my own, I'm a few weeks away from this solution, with some help from people here that know how to write xml for partition tables and can help me locate files for a build, I can generate the files, test them, make a write up and post the solution in just a few days.
By the way, this is a multi-device solution in the long run. We get one fixed and we can start on the others with this same issue, where the only life left in the device is the Qualcomm download mode driver showing in windows device manager.

Any word on a fix using QPST?
I purchased a T-Mobile galaxy s4 with a cracked screen at a great price and am going to repair the device myself. The extent of the damages requires me to change the front housing which contains the IMEI sticker. I was wondering if anyone knew where I would be able to purchase a new IMEI label to place on the new part after the repairs are complete?
Same problem here, I have changed my screen and the sticker was damaged. I hope that someone have the solution.
Do you really need it? I mean it will work perfectly once a new sim is put in. So who cares what the sticker says?
If you need the number for future reference you could just write it on any sticker and slap it in there. I have doubts that it would help for future warranty repair as you certainly won,t have any warranty on the device that has been broken and self repaired.
I understand some people just like to have everything look new. But for all anyone knows you are planning to sell the repaired device as though it was never damaged, which is unethical. Or you are trying to disguise a phone with a bad imei with a sticker showing a good imei, which is downright illegal.
I'm not accusing you of either, by the way. You seem like a nice enough guy. Just trying to demonstrate why any discussion around imei's, imei labeling, or changing imei's is always really touchy subject matter on xda. And even if your intentions are honorable the information you use to accomplish your goal can be used by thieves who would use it to deceive others. As such, xda prefers not to have any discussion of imei related stuff in the forums as it then becomes publicly available to those who would use it improperly. Xda does not want to be a party to that information sharing. And this thread is already in the top 5 Google search results when you search for "imei sticker" but the way, just to demonstrate how easily this information would be accessible to people looking to use it for bad purposes.

I have no ill intentions, just want everything to look new after my repairs are done. I completely understand the perspective you presented and I didn't even think of that aspect of my inquiry. I guess I'll have to do without it, as it's not a huge deal. Thanks for your input on the matter anyway!

Hi. Probably an unusual request. The sister of my wife has died. She had cancer, was 34, and let an 1 year old daughter.
Wife and her sister were really close and my wife forgot the pattern lockscreen.
She wants the recover the photos of my nephew . =/

I doubt you can do that, but in light of situation you can contact LG support to see if they are willing to help.
I don't think you could do something via adb or fastboot.
I guess only way you have to do is disassembling emmc and mounting it to a pc through some stuff. Then all you need to do is finding photos and copying them.

Legally the phone is hers. Its just sad to lose all those photos.
To help, i dont know why her SD card was corrupted. Locks both PCs i tried on and when it opened, was all messed up.

Well I told you, if you can contact LG support also if you can go to LG service if there is one near you. And most importantly you should mention that you can prove she's dead and it'll be good that if you can prove that phone belong to her (some kind of bill or anything else releated to her and phone)
The method mentioned above can or can't be successful so if you don't know how to do it better don't try it.
About SD card it was probably adopted so it can't be recognised by any other device than that phone, orbit was simply encrypted.
