Automatic App Restore w/froyo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is cyanogenmod the only froyo rom that automatically restores your apps by downloading them from the market?
Why/how is this feature disabled in the stock HTC sense rom?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I can't be the only one that loves this awesome froyo feature. Can devs cook this into their roms? Have they?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

I've never used CM before but would be interested in how he automatically adds the market apps. Might not be something that is disabled in stock but something he has added to his builds. I'm going to go grab one of his and check it out.

It's a feature of the AOSP-only builds of Froyo that use the official Market app. It's not a CM-only thing, it's just that CM is the only one so far that has turned it on/not blocked it.

got it, thanks!

Yeah..I love that feature!! Definitely miss it

Is there anyway to remove the evo phone.apk??

Since I'm stuck with the non rooted 2.2 software, I seriously want to remove the evo phone.apk, its horrible....I miss the nexus one phone apk. and the easier features and better caller id picture as well...any alternatives for a non rooted phone???...thanks
I don't believe so. That's a system app and you would need read and write capabilities to modify or remove it.

A opinion would be "Dialer One" in the market. Just Suggestion.
Stock Dialer?
Isn't there a way to install the stock froyo dialer, it is open source and included in CM6.
And where can I find it??..and will it work on a non rooted 2.2 froyo

Will a hard reset remove root?

I'm rooted with unrevoked 3 and I want to remove the root so I can install the ota update. So if I do a factory reset will I be good to go? Also what is the best app to backup all of my apps and settings? Musy be a simple one because I'm clueless wirh this stuff. Thanks
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
no, a hard reset will not. a reset only wipes userdata and cache and a few other things. why would you want an ota update???? just downlaod one of the roms our talented devs have created for you (most have the newest ota) and flash.
I would but I have no idea how to flash roms and backup and all of that. I don't even know how to find the roms. Or understand the terminology. And why wouldn't I want the ota update are those good because they fix issues and improve stuff?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
ok, it seems this might be a little more complicated than a 2 sentence answer...
you wouldnt want an ota, not because it is not better than its predecessor, but because it is just what htc put in, and as you know, there is alot of stuff htc is not capable of, not willing to, or not creative enough to put in. that is why you would want a custom rom.
a rom is the Read Only Memory of the phone. it is the stuff that tells it what to do when something happens. it is everything you see and do when the phone is booted up, as well as while it is booting. if your phone is rooted, you can do whatever the hell you want to do with it.
the talented devs at xda (including me minus the talent) have made custom roms based off the ota's. most have little add ons and tweaks. some of the more in-depth ones have bigger changes, or even complete ui changes. these devs have packadged them in update.zip scripts, so that they will easily install on your phone. they can be found in the android dev section (in the evo forum)
before flashing a zip (installing a rom through a script) you will need to wipe everything, so it is reccomended to use the titanium backup app to backup all your apps, as well as the data in the apps.
any more questions? shoot

Thanks I've been researching for the past 3 hours and I've backed up with rom manager and titanium backup and I think I am ready to install my first rom. I'm looking for a completly stable rom with vanilla 2.2 that will let me use everything that I can use on stock like 4g,market, and everything else. Thanks again
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
as vanilla, do you mean the lockscreen??? if you do, easy fix. if you mean stock android stuff, you will have a hard time finding 4g there... i am always willing to help. as an extremely stable rom, i reccomend fresh. very stable and looooooong battery
Well not just the lock screen. I just want stock android with no UI at all. And I want everything to work. Thanks for helping me btw
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I'm pretty sure there are no AOSP roms that have everything working, specifically 4G. I think there might be a couple Sense roms that have sense pretty stripped out that look and feel like AOSP, just dig around the development section.
If it's just the UI you care about, you can always install ADW or LauncherPro and make it look like AOSP. That way you have everything working and you get to keep some of Sense's finer parts, like the smart dialer (the AOSP dialer sucks!).
Ok.I'm thinking about trying the fresh rom is there anything that doesn't work with that? Does 4g work? Anything I should know about it? Lol
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I think dude used the word vanilla as an adjective for plain HTC sense 2.2 and not AOSP.
Fresh is awesome. I have been using it for a while and just updated to the latest one today. It's a sense ROM, so everything works. The dock looks a little different compared to stock but that's it.
Alright cool. Because I'm getting horrible battery life even with having the processor underclocked. As soon as I take it off the charger it drops from 100% to 85% within 10 minutes of no use lol. Also wil titanuim backup work with fresh? Like can I restore e erything with no problems?

Titanium should work with any ROM.
FYI, the paid version will allow you to do a one click batch restore of all apps and data.
Yeah I have the paid ver. But what's the point of switching if the only differnce is the dock. Is the battery life THAT much better?

Switch what? What are you talking about? Fresh ROM? Read the 1st post of the Fresh ROM thread to learn what it features.
I just did the backup and now my pandora and scanner radio apps are gone? Weird
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
That's not the only difference, it's the only major VISUAL difference. Most of the other stuff is under the hood. I don't know what kind of battery life you've been getting but with Fresh and king's #11cfs kernel I get great battery life. I put a fresh battery in at 7 this morning and I still have 45%. I was streaming pandora and MeCanto for a couple hours, made a few phone calls, 20 or so texts, and maybe an hour of internet browsing.
Oh I forgot about kernals. How do I install a kernel? Do I have to install a kernal? What is a kernel? Lol
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Those are questions better suited for Google.
Okay? But atleast tell me if I need one. I will be using rom manager to download and install rom.

Fm radio app

I noticed the htc sense virtuous rom had an fm radio app, but I prefer cyanogen mod rom, is there any way I can get that app installed on my cyanogen rom?
I tried saving the apk from the system app folder on to my sd card, but in cyanogen it said the app couldn't be installed. And I already had "install from unknown sources" checked off in the settings.
Thanks for the help.

This has been discussed already. It hasn't been implimented in CM yet. Hopefully in the final build.

This is typical you from looking at your post history. I really wish XDA had a way to block users. There are some that are just a waste of everyone's time.
edit : dug some more, and it actually does. If you go to the asshat's profile that you want to block, underneath the "user list" there is an ignore option. Sweet.
Please stop the flaming in here
You can understand the response though. CM is amazing... If you don't like it, stay stock and rooted...

Question about App syncs

With HTC sense roms, when u sign into Google, it automatically downloads all ur apps from last time my device synced.
When I log into cm7 or miui, it doesn't automatically download any apps.
Is there something that HTC sense rom have that makes the apps download automatically?? If so, is it possible to have that implentes into cm7 or miui?, possibly on ICS as well?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I'm not 100 on this but I do believe the reason for this awesome feature is 'HTC setup wizard'.
And if it is, I'm guessing just like everything else Sense, it wont be able to be ported/used since the framework is different.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
I've flashed 4 different ice roms and only one of them has restored my apparently and also pretty sure its due to that one being the only one with a setup wizard. Wasn't a HTC one though so it is possible if incorporated in the rom

i wish this feature can be implemented into other roms. that is one part about why I dislike AOSP roms. I hate freshly reinstalling all my 50+ apps.

Well Titatium backup has the feature where you can really install all your apps with no prompts.
Its what I always use anyways. I feel the market way is too slow.

What he said.. Each are varying with what works and what does not. I am running CM10 on my main phone, its not bug free but I dont have any huge major issues. CM9 improves on some things but not everything. The only ones I would personally call rock solid are the CM7 builds.
Want stable use phone daily for nav and tether also what's best way to backup my Rom now ?

You're not being very forthcoming with your setup. Assuming you are already rooted...You can back up apps with titanium backup. You can back up the rom with your recovery (cwm, twrp, ext, etc...). For nav, any rom will do. For tether, it depends on if you want to use the built in CM tether, or a market app. I believe the CM7 roms have the built in tether working. CM9 and CM10 may require the use of an app like barnacle for tethering. Stability is in the eye of the beholder, but generally the CM7 roms will be most stable since they have "better" kernel source.
My real suggestion...spend some time reading around the threads because you are the only one that can really decide what will work best for you.
Okay sorry I was not very specific but yes I am rooted on android 2.3!4 and I just want make sure I have a good alternative to stock maybe with better performance to keep my itch for a new phone away

You could forgo CM all together and try UKB, its a great ROM and Nitsuj keeps it up to date.....

CM10 unofficial
I have always been a CM fan from my OG Droid days.
For backing up I tend to allow google to keep my apps up to date after a fresh install. (I feel like google owns me at this point anyway) I dont use Titanium much now. I do back up my SMS messages though with SMS restore.
For the Inc 2 i think CM9 is fairly fast, has FFC, is mostly stable, and i WAS able to tether with the stock app. A good option
But I use CM10 consistently at this point because 1. It is visibly faster than CM9 and 2. I am now hooked on google now. Its pretty awesome even though i have seriously considered reverting back to CM9 for the FFC (google hangouts and skype video calls worked for me well)
I would check out aeroevan's v13 kernel and 20120821-unofficial for a good option.
Okay I now a lot about Android but I'm lost for a second now what is ffc ?
Sorry I got it now
Okay so yes I just need to have everything backed up with my stock Rom
Anyone ever used uniflash ?
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda app-developers app
CM
If you want absolute stability and everything to work (including proper audio and camera) I would recommend cm7.2
If newer features like google now matter more, I would use cm10, aeroevans build is getting very good. Some issues with audio, with some workarounds, there are details in dev forms here and on rootwiki.
I still use cm7.2 because the audio is perfect, which is important to me, and the battery life is far superior at this point.
Thank you sounds good!
