I was thinking about either me or someone else starting a test to compare all the ROMs. This way people can just look and compare to see what ROM they want, whether it be for performance, battery, ect. I was think about creating something like the attached table on how to compare the ROMs and was wondering would this cover everything?
additional details on test:
The ROMs will have nothing installed them except SETCPU
All ROMs will be using sense except CM6
ROMS that have preset profiles can will be used e.g. DC battery profile during the battery test, but this will also be noted in additional details

P.S. if someone can can upload a screen shot of this much appreciated it isnt working for me right now.
Reserved for adding updates on the tests

I've got a stock Sprint ROM in which I'm using the Advanced Config Tool and I'm curious is a custom ROM would be significantly better (faster, longer battery life, etc). Anyone have any insight on this matter?
I had a Touch that I bounced around to various ROMS, only go to back to stock Sprint for the stability. So, rather then doing the same with the Diamond, I'm looking for some advise as to what I'm getting already (with the advanced config tool).

just try the tool for your self....whats the worst you can do...a hardrest
if you mess things up
Oh no, I am using the tool and I like it. I was just curious if anyone knows how much faster an all out custom ROM would be... Yes, I could flash some myself, but that would be a lot of work if I just have to go back to stock (as I did with the Touch). But, if the custom ROM is significantly better then the advanced config tool alone, then I might consider giving it a try.

I tweaked my phone as much as i could and did improve but Shine On 2.4 is faster!
I would rather use a cooked Rom because, the the chefs (almost ) always know what they're doing, and they have the experience with tweaking to perfection.
Sometimes when they experiment with things it causes unstability, but they're only doing it to develope the perfect Rom. When using the cooked Rom's you alsow contribute to the chef work, and to this forum, in the search for perfection.
Is there a poll to compare all ROM's that are out there?

Significantly faster....no question!
Why?? Lots of reasons...from more available memory ("junk" removed), better memory management to page pooling up to 16mB
Most likely more stable as well (if using a well tested ROM)
Read thru the posts and convince yourself.........
You can only do so much tweaking with registry and/or Advanced Config. Further improvements needs to be cooked into the ROM.
Ok... So it sounds like there is fairly significant difference between the tweak tool and a custom rom. I had figured as much, but I was hoping the tool would have been close, because I just got all my icons set up perfectly.
But, I hate having the knowledge that the phone could be better, faster, etc. Too bad HTC or Sprint or whoever couldn't just get it right from the start! Oh well, I'm going to try a custom ROM one of these days...
Thanks Gang! Oh, and a bit off topic, but when I go to the custom ROM, I'm going to lose the Sprint crap, but the one item I actually use is Sprint music. I bet I can find a cab with it, but I am also going to lose the Sprint Music icon on the Music tab of TF3d. Any way to get it back there? Thanks.
I think AlphaZero has a ROM called "V7 SprintFlavor" that has all the Sprint stuff. Check it out.
I've finally got to the stage where I am completely hacked off at having to keep uninstalling apps due to running out of space in the internal memory.
I'm hoping to do it all in one hit, and what I want is recommendation for a decent, stable ROM - I don't want to have to chop and change, reflashing ROM after ROM.
I used to do this with my old Dream, and it was fun when I had the time, but things have changed for me now and I need a reliable phone.
What I need: Apps2SD, stability
Nice to have but not essential: Better battery life (underclocked kernel?)
Dream stuff, but not at the expense of first two: Speed increase, Froyo goodies
I don't care about SenseUI one bit - in fact I've pretty much removed/replaced nearly every trace of it on my phone, by using Launcher Pro and non-Sense apps/widgets.
However, I'd like to know if it's possible to keep the text selection function contained within the standard browser on my phone? It also works the same in DolphinHD, which leads me to believe it's integrated into the Sense framework? I don't know if I can get that with Froyo though.
If I do go for a Froyo ROM, I'd like to know what won't work. I gather video recording is broken - don't care about that. Is there anything else that don't work?
Any advice or recommendations, pretty please!
If you go to the roms dev section and look at all the roms chefs have cooked you will figure out which ones you prefer and which ones you may like. The chef will either tell you what doesnt work and later if you read the comments members will provide additional feedback.
There is no 'best' rom each one has + and -
Hello,
I have some doubts about the opendesire roms and defrost roms's and the cynogen mod roms. What are your opinion on these Roms? I am currently using defrost 4.7. Also what are the differences between these roms?
Also there is a theme called blufrost and it has also another name call gefrost or something like that. Whenever I try to install it, when I boot up, it goes into a constant boot loop. What am I to do? I really, really, love that theme. I really want to install it. Any opinions?
If there are almost exact themes that work I would not mind them. But hopefully there is a way to allow the original to work.
Thirdly, I want to overclock my desire and the kernal defrost gives is at 1.275 volts. What is the normal voltages the processor recieves? What is the maximum it can take? What is the minimum too?
Thank you all in advance!
Cyanogenmod is the base. There all the bugs get solved, features integrated.
To run Cyanogenmod on the Desire a specific Kernel is required which gets constanly updated, too.
The source code of both Cyanogenmod and the kernel are public available.
CyanogenMod releases a Desire ROM every now and then, with a lot of additional apps and tools integrated.
Both OpenDesire and DeFrost use the CyanogenMod source and mod it a bit, compile it and release it. Either modifiying the kernel, adding HAVS (DeFrost), or just removing not needed apps, adding other apps, adding custom settings, etc.
So all three are very similar and most often suffer from the same issues, because all of them use the same kernel, so all of them had the Optical Joystick wake issue, had a general sleep issue, etc. which should be solved now, however.
I don't recommend using the real CyanogenMod ROM. Simply because not so many Desire users use it, so don't expect too much help, themes, mods, etc. It's also bloated in my opinion with a lot of already installed apps.
OpenDesire makes it smaller, remove unwanted apps. It also offers an over the air (OTA) update app so it makes it easier to update the roms. It allows overclocking and undervolting. Has a lot of themes and users.
DeFroST is similar. Don't know if it's still true, but DeFrost seems to be slimmer, even more not needed apps removed. Also has an OTA app and allows you to change the Kernel without troubles. I used OpenDesire a few months ago, so I don't know if it got an improved OTA now, however, DeFrost had the much better and more flexible one. DeFrost also offers a HAVS kernel, which gives more battery life, however, it also isn't stable on some phones.
So in the end it's a personal decision. I also switched to DeFrost because the OpenDesire community got flooded with noobs after the Playstation mod got released for OpenDesire, noobs, who have no idea how to count till 10. The thread became flooded and useless. I also prefer the way Richard (DeFrost) does his work.
1.3V is the default max. voltage. You shouldn't go higher, because you can't improve the cooling nor anything else hardware related.
I know about and have seen the spreadsheet created by neif. I was wondering if there's any sort of rundown that compares the roms by features, and not just raw stats. Don't get me wrong - the stats are important and big thanks to neif for compiling them.
But i'd like to know what each rom brings to the table besides just which one is the fastest or has the longest battery life.
Right now off the top of my head the few features i'd really like to have would be:
working tether
working hotspot
removal of all the sprint apps, other then maybe sprint nav
I've used unrevoked on my phone, so it's rooted, but that's as far as i have gone so far.
Thanks
Read a ton in the development section. Each of the features you list are usually noted in the OP of each ROM thread. Way too much info to copy and paste!
yeah, i know about the threads in the dev section. Bit of a pain to read through them all though, which is why i was asking if someone had compiled a list similar to what nief did, except highlighting features rather then performance.
thanks
I have searched up and down for proper settings for kernel apps I usually run cm13 based ROMs even though I found wolly GPE to work nice without any tweaks but I like how CM is set up and feels a lot more smoother but one problem is my scrolling tends to hang and I play an online game religiously (fun run 2) and it seems to be more laggy while running CM, I'm pretty good with Linux computer wise and I'm just coming around to android development I enjoy what you guys do a lot of aspects are similar but there's a lot that's different as well. Anyways enough rambling. If anyone could tell me the best ROM and Kernel to fit my preference or even give me a link (I've read a lot already) I'd highly appreciate it.
I'm S-ON CM13 (not any CM based ) by the way not sure if that may be hanging me up also... Forgot to ask is busy box a must or is it just something to run certain apps ?
Also I'm not stuck on just L Speed if there's another Kernel tweaker someone could recommend I'd be more than glad to test it out!
