Hello,
I'm planing to root my desire and update it to 2.2. I've searched a bit, and found that people are taking about different versions of roms for desire. Which version is best? Where to get it from?
If i want to have version 2.2 do i have to root my desire to unbranded android 2.1 and then simply download android 2.2 or root it using 2.2?
Thanks for the reply in advance.

hello,
i think i need to make myself a bit clearer.
Currently i have HTC Desire with Tmobile software which is unlocked (sim-free). I would like to have unbranded android 2.2. I read a bit and understand that i need to root my device first, then i can put the unbeanded rom, is that correct?
Now, there is a lot of roms available, so which one i should use? Should i use 2.1 or 2.2 rom? Where can i get it from?
Thanks,
Wooju

this is a rooted originial HTC 2.2 rom. It is good for the beginning. And look at the description.. u will have to install the new Radio(Firmware) first. U can find the link in the thread.
U will have to choose if u want HTC-Sense and A2SD(ext3) and choose one of the roms available. I think they are all with Android 2.2
If you want a unbranded custom ROM you need to root your phone first, but if you just want the 2.2 update and doesn't mind the branding, there is an official update from HTC available.
I would recommend rooting your phone with 'unrevoked', there are plenty tutorials in this forum.
Which ROM to use is up to you. I use DeFrost without the sense UI.
Thanks for the reply. I just want to make sure, i root my device first, then load radio and then custom ROM?
x01a4, i uderstand that unrevoked is the program used to root the phone?
buying a desire soon and doing some researching and since the official froyo update is out, should i root or just update it?
Root and then install Neophyte 1.6. It's a custom rom that gives you a good stockish version of Froyo plus all the fixes that are needed making better than OTA Froyo.
OTA Froyo is buggy and should not have been released imo.
root but only if you understand it or if will be of any benefit to you, as if your phone breaks, the warrenty will be void!!!
I suggest buying it, keeping it stock - as htc will update it with fixes, and then seeing if root is really needed for you??? hope this helps, and btw, there are polls to see what roms peopls use on here so dont take one persons opinion in which rom to use, ie i used open desire v1.0c and i prefer that but everyone has different opinions.
I have rooted and updated to froyo but only because I am an eager beaver lol If I was you and not on Virgin Mobile then I would just wait for the OTA update and not bother with root tbh
@aunger90 do you have a link to this poll?
Does the G2 have to be rooted in order to get Gingerbread?
No. It'll all over the android news when it is finally released for what phones and such. The g2 will get it for sure. Unless you root your phone and then get gingerbread from a custom rom.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 with Virtuous Sense.
There are likely to be custom ROMs with Gingerbread way before HTC officially releases it for our phones. And to have a custom ROM you'll need root and S-OFF.
But you can stay non-rooted and just wait for the official update if you like.

Cool thx for the info guys.
Hi
I know that this was discussed many times.
but could you tell me what is the easiest/safer way to root/S-off htc desire z?
All posts I can find are quite old.
Thanks
Wiki method is considered by most here to be the safest.

If you want to be rooted, I'd stay away from any official updates. No official updates have been rootable for some time. And I think people that have updated to the official Gingerbread T-Mobile G2 ROM are having trouble even downgrading in order to root. There is a pre-rooted (but otherwise "official") G2 T-Mobile Gingerbread ROM posted in the Development section. If you want the Sense GB ROM, you should wait until a pre-rooted version is posted here. You would still need to root and gfree in order to flash either of those.
Thanks RedPoint. Going to hold off for now. I love the official gingerbread. I just want screenshot and over-clocking capability.
Hi all,
I got my Desire HD today and it's Arabic With Froyo 2.2 and want to Updating it to Arabic Gingerbread Official ROM
I want to update, Root and every other necessary thing to the device to avoid Downgrading or any other pains that may appear in near future
Want to stay in official ROM for while to test device and get familiar with it before trying other custom ROM's
Thanks a lot and waiting your help
check your phone settings...
-----about phone.....software updates ......check now.......
will be updated to official gingerbread........
but rooting will be a problem if you are updating ur build number to 2.42 or above...
you cant root now......you must have to wait.........
if its updating to 2.36 or 2.37...you can root it................
it depends on ur luck[I think]
[rooting without downgrading is almost impossible]...
ALL THE BEST............
Already checked for over the air update and found it about 110 MB
Case 1 : [Can i root my device now] and then update it either by Over The Air or RUU and keep root or it will be unrooted again ?!
Case 2 : I will update my device now and i don't know what versions it will be so will i be able to root it after update or will need hard work ?
sorry for those noob question but i am all new to this and don't want to break my device
If you root in froyo mood ....you cant go for official update......
for that you must unroot it and again update.......
2...If you update as I said it will depend on ur luck which version you are getting..
If you are updating to gingerbread 2.3.3
your build no. may updated to 2.37, 2.42, [I also saw one person posted in forum about 2.43]
If 2.37 comes ....no problem you can root it.......
If higher than that comes ...you must have to wait........[I dont know how longer]
In my opinion you must root it now.....because Official gingerbread isnt that good...
search the forum...you can see many compliants...after updating it....
I am fed up with too much of complaints and I am waiting to know how to root 2.42.........

So do you recommend staying in Froyo in official version and if i want Gingerbread so i have to use costume roms
i think that there is some changes in sense between Froyo and GB or i am wrong ? what the GB changelog for Desire HD cuz if it don't worth upgrading i will not do it and will stay with Froyo
So do you recommend staying in Froyo in official version and if i want Gingerbread so i have to use costume roms
yup....you can use custom roms if you want gingerbread after rooting....
I am recommending you to root in froyo than updating.........
I am one of the person who is regretting for updating .....
And I dont think there's difference bw the senses of gb and froyo....
[ if you wanna root...you MUST DOWNGRADE....whether its GB[upto 2.37] or froyo]......
What about rooting then update to 2.3.3 with pre-rooted room or GB update doesn't worth at all ??
i like the new sense 2.1 and want to get it but don't know what to do
also the device is new and with warranty so i don't wont to void it for one or two months cuz if there any problem with it i can send it back
if i updated now to official 2.3.3 ROM either by RUU or OTA , can i downgrade and go for root and custom ROM or i will be stuck at 2.3.3 with no root ?!
bro..listen carefully...I already posted for your question.....
its simple.....
If you update your fone to 2.3.3 via official update....
ur build no may get updated to 2.36 , 2.37 or above[in ur phone settings.about phone.. you can see ur build no......]
it depends on ur luck which version you will get.....[i believe]
currently therez ways to downgrade 2.36,2.37.......[build no]
if your fone get updated abve 2.37
.
downgrading above 2.37 isnt found yet.......so you cant downgrade it....that means you cant root it.......
I have a plan for you.........you just go for official update....
get ur 2.3.3 and sense 2.1
feel ur 2.3.3.....and know the difference bt 2.2 and 2.3.3
and use it for 2 or 3 months.....when you start thinking that you wanna root through downgrading just visit the forums......by that time our senior members will find the way to downgrade 2.42 and all...........
[caution-update at your risk....wat I have said about finding the way to downgrade 2.42 are estimations.....I am not sure about they will find within 2 or 3 months.]

That is what i am planning to do but just want to do it right so in future when i need to root or downgrade every thing will be smooth ,, do you recommend doing S-Off or any other stuff before updating as it possible now and will not be possible after updating ?!
noob question what is meant by 2.37, 2.42 where is that numbers ?? is it the build number or what cuz i can't find it
already downloaded this RUU is this the latest version and do you recommend update with it or go with OTA update ?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_ARA_2.42.415.1_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_193079_signed
which version that i can downgrade and is there a shipped rom for that or no ??
Thanks a lot for your help and your time
oh bro..am getting confused............
k..here is the deal......its simple....
dont think about S-off or sumthing b4 you update.....to S OFF ur set you must downgrade it now........you can do that stuffs when you think about rooting....
2.I prefer you go for official update.....
3.go to settings--about fone----software information---build no.....
if the picture given on d top is your DHDs settings then ur build no is 1.83.415
Nothing to do bro...just go for official update.........nothing to worry about....nothing to do b4 official update to make rooting easy.......Enjoy it until you want to root......
when you want to root check the forums......you will definitely find the way.....
[now think about only official update.................PLS DONT THINK ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE]
After updating officially......post ur new build no..here...I will tell you what to do........
ALL THE BEST>>>>
first i don't know how to thank you for your patience and your time
so now you recommend me to update to gingerbread and start using the device normal use
just want to know what is the best way to update the device OTA or using one of RUU files
final question about rooting and S-Off , is it possible to root and S-Off Desire HD with Gingerbread whatever the method is or updating it will make the device stuck and we have to wait for solution ?!
you go for official update bro..........that i recommend you to use gingerbread as you dont want to root ur fone now and create some problem....
no......you can root ur fone even after updating to gingerbread.....
just check out the forum.......
you arent rooting it quickly after updating na ????
if ur build no..gets updated to higher than 2.37.......
you must wait for rooting......thats it....nothing else.........
All the best with ur DHD GB......
Thanks a lot for your help and I will update the device today isA
I will postpon rooting for month or two for warranty reasons cuz the device is new and don't want to void my warranty
now i already installed some apps and want to format so shall i reformat it from BootLoader using Factory Reset
also updating it over WiFi or using the RUU file RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_ARA_2.42.415.1_Radio_12. 54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_193079_signed
update via Wifi......
Updated it via WiFi and it's so good
liked the new sense with quick setting and application icon now is better than the old arrow and menu section all / frequent / downloaded is VERY GOOD
Version now is
Baseband Version
12. 54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2
Kernal Version
2.6.35.10-g997575f
Build Number
2.42.415.1 CL68905
Software Number
2.42.415.1
....great...........Enjoy your GB.........
What's the best Maps/GPS application to use and have Egypt Maps cuz Google Maps still don't have offline mode maps like Nokia Ovi Maps and every time you run you must be connected to Internet
Or if there any other way to save maps for Google Maps to use it without internet will be good
you must have a app called locations.........[i havent tried yet]
there ......if you want to see the map of particular location.....you must download it.....[i had 327mb to download.....and I didnt]
so that does means....you can see the map...even if you are offline.......
