2.2 brings the wonderful bbc iplayer something I use all the time. However I'm really disappointed with the quality, all the videos suffer from a really strong green tint, and noticeable blur, the same videos watched on an old iphone are far better in colour and detail when held at a normal viewing distance.
There also seems to be an issue with the videos failing to stop and playing in the background with no way to stop them.
Just tried it
I just tried it, too and I didn't see any odd colors. I just played about 2-3 minutes of "The Deep" which was the first video on the main page. The quality was okay for my 2Mb connection here, with only a tiny bit of stuttering at first. I think BBC adjusts your stream bitrate according to your connection. Try a different video, or a different connection to the internet.
The video does keep playing in the background if you press the back button. I think I pressed it three times before I heard the audio stop and I was looking at the main iPlayer page. I think this is on purpose, so you can browse other content or program listings without interrupting the video in progress. It's a little awkward to figure out, mostly because there is no keyboard or mouse. You just have to hit different buttons and see what happens.
My test was a side by side comparison - playing the same videos at the same time. The video on the old iphone is superior.
The video failing to stop was definitely a bug - I was at the iplayer page and could not select any other links and the browser was unresponsive with the audio still playing.

i tried the search, but couldn't find anything remotely covering my problem.
in the default htc youtube player you can change the settings to high quality. But the stream loads to 100% and plays for 30 seconds and then it starts loading again.... This is no streaming to me, is the defaut htc youtube player unable to stream? In the registry i found the location hklm\software\htc\youtube, but i have no idea wat i can change here. Also google was very little to no help. Hopefully you guys can provide a solution, because i kindof like the little app.
nobody got this problem? or we all got this problem, but there is no solution?
guess nobody got this issue.......
Hi - I can shed some light on it I think. I was fiddling with youtube player yesterday and found some movies did this and others didn't. Depending on the content and the size (and the quality obviously), the video buffers the first few seconds, and then buffers in the background as it starts to play. Depending on your connection, the player might play the video back quicker than your device is downloading/buffering the stream.
so basically my provider connection is too slow..... CRAP! Cuz i just tested wit wifi and the same vid didn't have the problem...... sigh.........
Hi. I am experiencing some weird album video issues.
Here's the deal: When I start a video it starts the sound first then the video. The longer the duration of the file the longer I have to wait for the video to the point where a 54 minute video will turn off the screen before it comes on. This all happened after a hard reset. Previously it would just load the video and start showing it and playing the sound at the same time (same video files I am using now and it even happens with the sample video on the phone). I have tried all sorts of different settings with HD tweak and advanced config to see if I can get that performance back but no luck. Also I noticed that now the "loading" shot is still and I swear that before it was animated (the little "pie pieces" circling/cycling through brightness but maybe I am imagining that and getting it mixed up with the youtube player).
I would love to get it back to the old performance if anyone knows how as I had finally found the best video coding settings which allowed me to have 800x448 video without stutter and without blurriness of lower bitrates at higher res.
Don't know if it'd be a settings tweak, reg tweak, but whatever if anyone can help I'd be eternally grateful.
p.s. Did a search but got no related results, will continue to look for a while in case I missed something but don't think I did. Thanks again.
Anyone had an issue where the speakers have some popping, for me specifically when I'm watching videos that predominantly have just spoken dialogue. One example being the world of Warcraft Q n A from today on twitch. Another a video my company put out telling the company about upcoming events.
Speakers are 100% fine though with music and other videos and YouTube stuff though.
It also seems like this happens in mainly videos playing in chrome through the site instead of the app.
i have same issue on some vids and apps.... when this happens reduce your volume and popping will stop
Sometimes it's the source material/bitrate causing this.
The way it was recorded does not mesh with what's being used to play it back.
Find a high quality MP3 of voice and see if you're still popping.

And even the amount of gain that the sound files are encoded with.
Gain, I think that's actually what I was trying to think of as the primary suspect.
Hello. So when watching live streams through an app called Twitch, I encounter massive screen tearing. If I set the video quality to any quality other than auto, I get what looks like a vertical sync bug, where the video doesn't line up with itself properly. I attached a screenshot for clarity. Even when I keep the video quality set to auto, the video will freak out and glitch every 30 seconds or so. I can always hear the audio smoothly, and the frames are still being updated within the fragmented video pieces I receive. Note that streaming video on any other app (Opera, YouTube) works perfectly fine, regardless of what resolution I set the videos to. I am running the final Beanstalk KitKat 4.4.4 release, and haven't had problems with Twitch videos on Lollipop, but Lollipop's instability encouraged me to roll back to KK. I've tried forcing GPU acceleration and disabling HW overlays to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I saw there was a thread back in November about chromecast issues, but no responses, so I thought I'd start a new thread.
I don't have any issues casting issues with streaming video apps like Fox Sports Go or a Watch ESPN. No issues when casting "local" videos from my SD card within VLC Player (using the cast button in the player app) . No problem with VLC Player with the HDMI connection - but it acts like it is casting (video only shows on the TV). Mirroring the screen looks fine with HDMI. Swiping screens is smooth. I can see the top and bottom of the screen. Audio apps like Pulsar Music Player and Pandora also cast fine.
Here's where it gets weird.
1) When I cast to the TV from Google Home, I get a message that my device is not optimized for casting. Then the mirror mode cuts off the top & bottom of the screen, and the casting is choppy. Swiping from one screen to another is laggy. When I cast with SmartView through settings, no message, but still cut off at the top and bottom, and choppy / laggy.
2) When casting local videos in mirror mode, both with chromecast and hdmi, MxPlayer is _terrible_ distorted and choppy. MxPlayer is fine when not casting.
3) When casting with Google Home or SmartView, VLC Player is choppy, but nowhere near as bad as MX Player
Because both the players work when not casting, it doesn't seem to be a problem with video codecs (although I have no idea which codecs I should use for MX Player - I haven't had any playback issues like I did on the S2).
Anyone know why the issues with chromecast? There were no issues casting with my Tab S2....
Thanks,
Joe
Where is the cast button in VLC? I didn't think it could do that, I just looked again and still don't see it. App is up to date.

Should be on top, right hand side.
I'm using the beta version, 3.0.94 from Jan. 15th. The beta, at least, has supported direct casting from the app for many months.
First enable casting in settings, in the extra settings section - casting is between audio and advanced. Then you'll see a cast icon at the top right of the screen.
Also after a video starts, press the screen to bring up the video controls while the video plays. Again, there will be a cast icon on the top right of the video screen.
This feature may be limited to the beta.
Joe
I have the beta as well latest version I see casting in settings and enabled it but no button on top right.

So I'm new to xda, but I tried attaching three screen shots of vlc, with the cast icon showing in the corner of the first two and the third where it asks which device to cast to. I'm not sure how or if I can embed them in line, but they are hopefully attached. I don't know if it helps you or not. (yes, Browns Hard Knocks... I grew up in Cleveland, a cross I have to bear)
Back on topic,
Is anyone else having issues with mirroring?
Good luck,
Joe
So I've used this more. Smart Cast and Google Home continue to be crappy for mirroring.
SmartCast is choppy, really bad contrast and distorted.
Google Home tells me "your device is not optimized for casting", the contrast and distortion are not so bad, but video plays choppy. Then after 5 minutes it drops connection. Every time.
While it is true that mirror casting is about the worst way to put content onto the TV, there are some apps that just don't support casting. This is a disappointment. You'd think a tab as expensive as this would be best in class.
