Ok. Short story of what I want to do and why.
I am a developer and I feel that I don't contribute enough to this fantastic site and its users. After the recent unpleasantness I went away and thought about what it is that I could do to try and fix this. My idea is a site or section of the wiki built specifically to track bugs and issues in new roms (I was specifically thinking WMXL but there is no reason this can't be used for all of them).
I am currently working on my own XML based site with PHP5 driving and if people think it will be useful I'd write and host this service before I continued with my own site (hopefully before WMXL 0.30 is released).
I want to try and restrict the way people enter and search the information relating to problems with new roms and try to cut out the background noise. I was thinking about having fields such as ROM version (drop down list), radio version (text box), boot loader (drop down list), main program affected (text box), extent of interference (drop down list), description of problem (text area), how to reproduce error (mandatory text area!).
This will hopefully encourage more people to think about what might be causing the problem rather than just posting what they cant do and expecting someone else to work everything out. Forcing a description of how to recreate the problem will hopefully find most users not needing to post after they work it out, and if the recreation steps dont work then the post will be closed. Hopefully people will think enough that I will be able to moderate this forum (type thing) myself and maybe someone in another timezone (closer to the UK) can take care of it while im asleep.
No one can stop n00bs posting silly questions but hopefully we can reduce the amount this annoys everyone else.
Sorry it took so long to describe my idea.

UPDATE: STARTED!
I got started as soon as I'd got a couple of replies but I still need you all.
For the chef's and other brilliant people:
1. What info do you need with each ticket to try solve them?
2. Do you want to be the only one to close tickets? Or should the submitter be able to?
3. What info do you want to store for the roms to filter to the smallest pool of specific tickets?
For the users:
1. How do you want to be able to search this?
I DON'T ASK FOR DONATIONS! ALL I ASK IS THAT PEOPLE SEARCH BEFORE SUBMITTING!

Bugzilla? yes please
This is a very good idea. In fact, I think that we need too a place to store the temporary fixes generated after each ROM publishing. It will be a good place for this too.
Good Idea.
It Would Help A Lot, Sounds Like Finding Answers Would Be Easier And Should Cut Down On The Hostile Atmosphere.
Cheers
Yes, very good idea.
This become easyest forum for everyone.
If it would be of any use, i can host this on one of our UK servers so we get very good speeds? I know 'iammaz' has said he can host it but he is in Australia so for the UK guys it might be a tad slow.
If not then no worries, but just trying to do my bit!

Cheers and I'm sure everyone appreciates the offer. My site is hosted in the US. At the moment this is being built as a module to my current CMS. Whether or not this adds too much overhead I won't know until I try. The problem will be if I use too much cpu time im sure it's against the ToS with my hosting company and they will shut me down.
I hope that I will have it built as a stand alone object by then and anyone else can take this and run this on php5 hosting or in fact I could run it as web services from my personal server at home.
Progress goes well. Just working on possible searching and indexing algorithms to make searching fast and useful.

Great idea
It's 2am. I'm piking for the night. I'm expecting a phone call at 7am tomorrow so will be back into it then for 5 or 6 hours. Hopefully will be almost done by the end of that.
I need to work out how you want to have logins work. I don't think i can make it authenticate against this forum (i havent tried integrating with vBulletin before). Do I allow open registration? do I try make it force you to register the same name but PM'ing the password to that username here? do i manually add people as they ask and restrict the group?
let me know in the next 6 hours or so.

hard at work again at http://maz.net.au/
It would be great building a rom based on the Benchmarks of the roms wich you can find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406640
The Chefs need to work together and exchange what they did in specific to get good scores in the sectors they lead and have best results.
I would exchange my knowledge. Please join this Project and lets make a fantastic rom.
What do you think about this ?
I think about a meeting on a chat with only developrs and we exchange our thoughts and knowledge.
Do you think it'd be that simple for everyone to agree upon which tweaks to enable, which ones leave out, as well as applications?
Some of them are standard procedure, but the rest depends on each different chef.
The first question would be: a light ROM, or a full-feature packed, at the cost of performance?
For my part, I usually cripple most of my ROMs to the mininum, adding afterwards only the apps I need.
Registry tweaking also is quite aggressive.
I don't like all the bloat in most of the ROMs, but that's what most users are looking for.
As for eye candy, I never integrate it at the cost of performance.
So the question would be: what do CHEFS want VS what do USERS want.
If you want to take this to the next level, you'll have to set a date for the meeting.
I'd recommend IRC, since not many ppl use jabber. MSN sucks, so...

Well, I do think research will lead to a certain extra insight.
For example: I tested the recent Swtos ROMs: they are (real) fast, all three of them.
Why? Is it because he left something out, did he combine things, did he add something? (please tell us Swtos...)
The problem with this kind of collaboration is that cooks have to share their work. And their time...
Well, most experienced chefs have pretty established routines for performance gains.
Here's a quick MUST DO checklist for a good ROM:
1: remove bloat
2: tweak registry (services, caches, etc...)
3: DSM grouping
4: G'Reloc
5: Pagepool
Anybody with a little advanced knowledge of the windows internals can handle the first 2 tasks.

Doesn't that "lock" your ROM and come in contradiction with most thoughts exposed in the locked ROM thread?

Yes it does, then again, it's not a compulsory step.
Every chef has his own preferences.

May better to publish "Tree" of project (OEM,SYS,etc)?
Nothing new - look to opensource
But who will moderate it?
It is the big work, I think.
There are many tutorials, documents and even video presentations on the forum. Kitchens may differ according to device but the basic principles are the same. Search for them and do lots of research!

I guess they are not asking about how to cook a ROM... but they try to invite people (especially ROM chefs) to collaborate... and sharing how is the best way to cook a good ROM...
Hi,
I read a lot about different hardspls and radios together with different roms result in faster or slower battery drain... But nobody really knows which is the best hardspl or radio combination for any rom.
that's why I set up a little website which could help with this..
http://www.smartwebdesign.ch/ppcbatt/
It's only very simple by now.. I don't want to put real work in it until I know what you think about!
If it's beeing used I will add a search interface for sure.. but for now I just want to know what you think and if people are willing to enter data...
Suggestions are highly welcome!
Greets Chaelli
nice intention
i think you should have a required field for the location where the phone is usedand the provider(some combinations work good in some regions/orivuders)
and the first fields should be drop down ones, to be able to select previously created entries, or create a new one(to be able to sort and filter data )
le:
it would be a good ideea , for all users to use the same tool to measure battery drain in standby, and with the screen turned on at maximum brightness
this would be an emphiric way of measuring battery drainage.
if you want accurate data, then only certified people can enter data into the site.
as mentioned, there are many variables, network, age of phone, how warm it is even.
dont think its possible personally, but a good idea.
Is there any software that can do a battery of tests on WinMo? Perhaps all chefs can cook them into their Roms so that it would launch right after the initial setup before any cabs are installed and perform the tests and at the end a summary will be displayed.
thx for the feedback!
@ravest: I will add these fields but not groub by them yet (useless until there is more data) - but I will add a possibility to show the details for every device/rom/radio where you can see these things (including the comments)
@others: I also thought about measuring.. but I don't think people will take the time to measure this exactely - that's why I've chosen to use a subjective measurement - usually one has a pretty good idea how one configuration works compared to another one (with the same usage pattern - which is usally not depending on the configuration but on the person...
I know that this is not good science.. but IF we get a lot of data I think the results would be usefull...
The only way to confirm battery life is in a laboratory, with the handset linked directly to certified test equipment and kept at constant transmitter/receiver levels.
Any public database of random opinions will be much less useful than individuals trying out all the different radio/ROM's for themselves.
As others have mentioned before there are too many variables on the way people use their phones, and different networks etc etc.
@optimiser: of course you are right - but I never intended to get an exact value - but an average user-feeling. People can compare different configurations on their personal phones !usually with other variables (like usage pattern, location, provider) staying stable! - and this is what's important.. one can compare the different configurations against each other

And therefore it is useless, as us humans, can't properly judge battery drain (which is measurable in mAmps) by "user feeling".
In order to measure battery drain you would need to set up a test procedure, which must include (beside the others) the following:
the same phone
the same period of time
same usage
and WORKING measurement tool. Not a software (because they tend to swtich of on standby mode) but plugged external measurement.
THEN you could approach some kind of fair measurement. Otherwise it's "how you feel", and as long as you are happy with your feelings, it's perfectly OK.
Cheers.
So I am new to these forums, and new to winmo devices in general(coming from sidekick platform). I have browsed through some threads but still have no clear place to begin. My goal is to customize my brand new touch pro 2 and learn more about my device.
If anyone would be as kind to point me to specific threads on where to begin or have any advice of their own it will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Keep in mind there are a few sub forums for the touch pro 2...
You might want to give the themes and aps sub forum a good read. In there right at the top you'll find this thread Software worth installing on the TP2 *Continuously Updated, links in thread* [MAR 8]
That's definatly a good place for you to start.
Reading through the CABs and Tweaks thread is a good start too. The real potential of the TP2 isn't really unlocked until you start tweaking, and the ability to tweak/customize is one of the best things about Windows Mobile. Read through the thread, see what customizations sound good to you, and try them out. Don't be afraid to tweak. Most any of the customizations can be uninstalled. Or at the last resort, you can hard reset to get to factory settings.

I know u gonna want to get ur phone up to speed, so heres somemore advice. Theres a thread here in general called "why is my phone so slow". Theres some cabs listed there thats like system tweaks to make ur phone more efficient and faster and manage memory better. system tweak cabs to look for is: Data Fix Cab, SD tune up, dynamic system proxy, manila no push internet, and memory leak cab. all of those together will make ur phone UI faster, better internet speeds, better memory management(more free RAM avaliable), and faster read speeds from ur memory card.
It might be a good idea to get a good system file explorer or registry editor. the included file explorer is good but cant edit registry. You might want to look for either the newest Total Commander or PHM editor(might b mispelled). any of those give u complete access to files and system registry. also allows u to back up your data on ur phone in case you ready to try some serious installs
If u havent noticed already, your battery only reads in 10% increments. Theres a mod/cab called No2chem and Chainfire 1% Battery. Once thats installed , your battery meter will give u a more exact/precise battery reading in increments of 1, instead of 10. ur stock battery meter wont show it so u should download a battery meter of sorts. You can either get a new taskbar that 1% is enabled or even easier , just install WMMiniBattery. it will put a small battery meter that stretches across the whole screen up top. itll read in 1% increments and alot easier to see where ur battery life is at. but remember, if u get the 1% battery cab, u also need a new battery meter. The wmminibattery works well with no hiccups. theres another one up here, but gave me issues whenever u opened the keyboard up.
just to let u know, the stock browser in tp2/tilt2 suxxxxxx....so u going to want a new better faster one. LIke Skyfire, Opera mini 5 , and opera mobile 10. i got em all the stock browser i believe the opera 9 or something and internet explorer. the ones i named previously blows all of those out the water when it comes to browsing experience and speeds. plus Skyfire is like the ultimate one. can play any video or movie off the web on a website, mostly. i can use skyfire and watch whole movies from websites with out hardly any slowdown. try that with internet explorer or opera 9 in ull see what i mean. for theme tweaks and stuff, check out that particular thread.
Im not trying to talk ya to death...lmao Just giving u a headstart, cuz theres so much info and tweaks for our phones, that almost impossible to come across them all. one more thing, get either Clean Ram or Clear Temp cab. those help and clear up old files, cache, etc.. also helps to make phone more efficient. I could go on and on listing stuff, but i think with what i named, you will catch up quick to the rest of the community without flashing a new rom.
Just make sure to read up plenty, tons of useful info from very skilled people up here. and when u ready to try out a new operating system on ur phone, Android, just let me know, ill show ya the way..lol
Welcome to Rhodium and have fun modding your phone, i surely have. I only joined in April and already seasoned...lol my phone is nuthing like it was brandnew or completely stock.
When you get some time, go through the custom rom section to see if any of those roms interest you. Once installed, there are countles amounts of modifications that alter the overall appearance of the phone. From boot up to shut down, your phone can be thoroughly customized.
As a java developer and Android enthusiast, I've always wanted to program something for Android. Could never think of anything but I've had a idea as of late and I wanted to hear ideas and feedback and of course interest...
Basically this will be a add-on Xposed module for WhatsApp that will add a statistics menu. Now, some of you might be thinking there already is one. No, this would be per contact based how many messages have you sent, received, etc.
This is pretty easy to obtain and calculate from the WhatsApp database.
But I'd like to add my own stats. Two examples off the top of my head that are currently not in the current statistics menu are how many times have you blocked/unblocked a person (very easy) to how many times have you opened/closed a contacts conversation window (more difficult).
I'd like feedback on people that would be interested in this as users and if anyone wants to help, thank you; I've programmed in Java processionally but have done 2-3 apps in Android and don't hace much experience (more so with the GUI)
That's a nice idea. I would love to have an xposed module showing the stats. Well do try.

Keep it on!! But I m on N now, and no xposed for N yet
Sent from my cancro using XDA Labs
There is already an App called Whatstat. It doesn't work very good and i'm not sure how accurate the infos are. But the stats displayed there are the most interesting and would be nice in your Add-on. Also it would be nice if the stats are not just per number but per contact (if they changed their number and/or you created a new contact for the same person). Good luck and please keep going. I would love to have this add-on.
Still waiting for this..
Would be great to be able to collect data from the entire contactlist.
And.... Could you do something like collecting media data per contact (images & video clips & audio & voice notes) ?
I would like to delete some media files "per contact" since there are mess of files when i am trying to backup my data.
Any news about your Moudule?
Would be great if it will be released soon, I like the idea
Let it be clear for the record:
This project is NOT dead
I am drawing up sketches on how I would like to design it and integrate it smoothly into WhatsApp and such. Those are in alpha form although there are a couple of members that have seen it and feedback is pretty good.
I still do need development help; Right now I am relying on viewing code from other WhatsApp projects and playing around with that...Not getting much help so its stalled, but not dead.
If I cannot read WhatsApp's database file, I would need to read all the conversations and fill it into a separate customized database. This would take me a bit more time and also performance would not be ideal.
There is a module which let you see the sended and received messages per contact.
Try out whatsapp extensions http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.suraj.waext
@riahc3
How is the development going?
