Froyo Move to SD & Weather Widget Problem - Desire General

I have an interesting problem with my phone (updated to froyo via OTA)
whenever I move a app to sd card or from sd card to phone the widgets on scenes reload (you as if the phone is turned on first time) and the weather widget stays as a grey rectangle box.
It is only fixed if I remove it and add again as a widget. I believe this weather widget situation also causes battery drain. I am not sure though, does the same happen to you if move an app to sd or vice versa
I have even tried hard reset, still the same. weather widget doesn't function after moving an app to sd.

I have this problem too. Unbranded UK Desire with OTA Froyo
Tried a hard reset to no avail.

Same problem here. Nothing helps.
Sent from my ZX Spectrum using Froyo_zx81

Same here also............

anyone else ? or anyone with a solution
can it be related to SD card ?

It happens to me too. Orange UK desire, debranded using a WWE ROM and OTA updated to 2.2. Rebooting also brings back the weather.
I just wish the news would automatically update.

Are you moving anything that has a widget?
I have Vanilla android but you can't move anything with a widget to SD Card (for example, last.fm). If you do, those widget(s) wont be avaliable for selection.
It could be possible that if you're moving something with a widget, that particular widget is lost and thus all widgets are refreshed in the launcher causing a freeze.

It happens with every app I move to sd or from sd to phone. Refreshment of widgets is not a problem it happens very fast and doesn't cause any issues.
However, something goes wrong with weather widget. It does not refresh correctly, it stays as a big grey rectanagle w/o any icon or info on it.

I'm also suffering from this problem. I get it whenever I mount my phone as a disk drive. I've also noticed that it's only the large weather widget that won't refresh.

How did I miss this thread?! Yes, I too have this problem and I already described it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7525995#post7522835
And I can add 4 more people with this issue. Yup, in my office this phone is very popular So we tested it on every phone we have. This deffinitely should be reported to HTC. I did.

When you move the app to SD card, not entire app will be moved, however the mojority part does.
So if you move the app which contains widget to SD card, it is highly possible the widget is also been moved. And the phone will not have the access to SD card when you mount it as a disk drive via USB cable, that also means your phone will not be able to retrieve any data from SD card.

Yup I also get this when I mount my phone as a disk drive.
I think its because when u mount it on the pc it demounts it from the phone so all the apps on the SD card get removed from all the menus and desktop links get messed up and it reboots sense.

Nope, I think this article is not about this bug (and it is a BUG). Five phones I tested behave the same way - widgets go nuts after connect / disconnect phone from PC and upon moving any "SD card safe" application to SD card (tried Compass, Rock Player, Slide Puzzle game...)
Aforemetioned article is just a help for people whose common sense is not so common Of course I would never try to move a widget on SD card, but I guess some people would...

What OS are people on? As I am experiencing this problem also. Widgets reset as soon as I connect the phone to my PC. I'm running Win7 64bit which this happens on yet on my work laptop running WinXP 32bit the phone mounts fine and not a single widget resets.
Idea's?

I use Windows 7 32bit. Will try XP tomorrow... But widgets also behave funny on initial boot, in which case if you are "pushing it" weather widget can also crash.

Done some more messing about and this is defiantly related to move apps to sd card. I moved an app to the sd card and tried on both my work laptop and my home pc. Both running different OS's and it happens on both. I then moved the app back to the phone and connected the phone to the laptop and then the PC and the widgets did not reset.
I've raised call with HTC so hopefully that they will be somewhat helpful but not holding my breath.

FroYo, unbranded Desire, I find the Weather widget goes blank and cannot be reactivated, but I think this only happens when I am in an area that does not have a specific weather report.
My solution is just to remove the widget and then add it again to the desktop. Frustrating but only takes a moment.

Happened with my phone as well when I updated to 2.2 yesterday. (unbranded, unrooted, 32 GB sandisk sd card)
I can only speak for myself, I have never tried, and never will try to move any weather app or widget to SD card but the problem is still there.
As soon as I move any other apps to SD (for instance Opera mini) the weather widget dies, it goes grey and cannot be refreshed. The only solution I have found is to remove the widget and them put it back again, then it works and updates.
I say this is a software bug, and not a problem between the desire screen and 40 centimeters away

Tried different operating systems today: XP 32bit, XP 64bit, Windwos 7 32bit, Windows 7 64bit. The bug, as described above, persists!

Memory card issues

Got an issue with my 16gb sdhc card for my desire.
For some reason I can no longer use it and can't figure out why. Earlier today I was using it fine to listen to music but now I can't. It started off saying my memory card wasn't there and now its saying there are no files and anything that accesses the card is running real slow.
I've taken the card out and put it into a computer via USB but it won't recognise the card. I've also mounted it through the phone and still no luck. All that seems to be pointing towards a broken card but for some reason if you go into settings and under storage info it tells me exactly how much space is left on the card. Even the 'mini info app' can tell what size the card is and how much space is left.
Does anyone know of this issue and a solution?
My most recently installed apps are:
Metal slug live wallpaper
ADW installer
Beautiful live weather live wallpaper

Memory card not being read after reboot

Hi,
Everytime my phone runs out of battery power or I reboot the handset, the phone refuses to load all the applications for the memory card. The memory card can be seen - within the settings, however the applications dont appear as normal within the menu or on the homescreen, the names of the apps are present but their each application logo of applications installed on the memory card is the same.
This is random also. Sometimes the apps show as normal, all icons load as normal. But mostly it fails. If it does load as normal, it sometimes takes upto 5 minutes for the card to 'kick in'.
Any suggestions please?
It could be to do with your sd card. What brand & size card do you have, where did you but it from and how did you first format it?
All the above may not be relevant, but some cheaper, non branded cards can cause issues!
Something you could try... I was having a similar issue, except mine would boot up with the message sd card corrupted.
Only a format would get it working again in the phone, but strangely my PC could view it, although the pc would occasionally loose sight if it!?
The only solution I found is to unmount the sd card before shutting down - Menu, settings,
Sd & phone storage, unmount sd card.
This seems to resolve my issue, perhaps it will help you too? (although it won't be possible when the battery dies I guess.
I hope that helps! Let me know how you get on!

I have the problem but I have +75 apps on the SD card, pretty chunky ones too and my SD card read/write speed on class 2/4/6 cards is down to 1-5MB/s best case when using such a forced SD card installation for most apps so I sort of expected it. In my case, it seems to be Titanium Backup causing a hold up for the rest since it is always the last to load before the rest can commence, and if it doesn't load, most of the rest don't either. For whatever reason, it can take minutes to load so it delays everything else (7 minutes is the max I've counted).
If I hit a reload SD card widget on my homescreen that is part of SwitchPro widget, everything reloads as expected so I generally use this.

[Q] 32 gb mico SD card repeatedly "damages" itself for no good reason

Hi all,
I have an Epic 4G for Sprint, never unlocked, stock ROM Android 2.2.1 EC05.
I recently bought and inserted a 32 gb microSDcard from Amazon (search "Patriot Signature 32 GB Class 10 MicroSDHC Flash Memory Card PSF32GMCSDHC10", can't insert hyperlinks yet).
I once made the mistake of NOT unmounting the card when disconnecting from my Windows 7 64-bit desktop. The phone told me the card was damaged and had to be formatted. I did this and everything seemed back to normal, although my card was wiped clean.
Since then the phone has randomly shown me with the same message twice, even when it has not been plugged into a PC or a wall charger for hours. Wiping the card clean has been my only option both times.
Ever since the failed Froyo update and the patch, my phone has had multiple annoyances, sudden freezes of the notification pulldown etc. I can't exactly pinpoint when the MicroSD failure happens or if something causes it. otherwise the card is fast and read/write speeds are excellent - 30.91 gb available. Both times the phone was at low battery, but not zero battery.
I do have Advanced Task Killer (start when Android starts) and a free app to move apps 2 SD. Both were downloaded from the Market.
Please help! Not having reliable memory means I can't do much with my phone at all. If its a bad card, then oh no! But if there are ways to troubleshoot or just discard this card and get another one.
When you format the card, are you doing it from within the phone or Windows?
Always from my phone. It won't let me do anything else unless I format it.
Try taking it out of the phone, then formatting it directly from the computer, FAT32 format.
Put it in an SD card adapter, formatted to FAT 32 in Windows. That took half an hour. Everything is good so far. Any other precautions I can take ? Thanks again.
Alternately, is there a SD card and/or phone contacts backup utility you guys recommend.
If your contacts are saved to your google account it should automatically sync them.
Alternatively, you could save them to your SD card and then copy the entire contents of your SD card to your computers HD.
There is a bunch of generic micro sd 32gb cards that do not function properly even they are not truly 32gb as they say, I had one of those and nothing but problems I think it was like around actual 4gb but they made to appear like 32gb.

I'd disagree. Don't run it in the background or use the autokill functions, but it does let you kill more apps than the built in task manager. That's useful for when some apps freeze or get started in the background but aren't showing in task manager.

I'm surprised there aren't many more advocates of Watchdog on here. It's a very efficient monitor of app activity, much smarter, and gives you much better options to decide whether you really need to kill an app process or not (rarely should you need to). The widget on my home screen has become essential for me.

[Q] Some random questions about 4G Touch

I have a few questions that have been accumulating that I would like to get the answers to. If you know the answer to any of the below please chime in.
1. There are a few grayed-out icons that are in my app menus from applications that I have uninstalled and some that are duplicates of applications that I still have installed. Any way to clear these out? I'm assuming these are a result from using the move2sd application at some point.
2. I have Vlingo start automatically when I connect a bluetooth headset. It finds it necessary to remind me how many missed calls I have since I last flashed the phone... I'm up to almost a 100 now. Any way to stop it from doing this?
3. I currently use a suction cup phone holder in my car. Is there any way to have it emulate the official Samsung car dock by going into car mode when I plug the power cable in or is this specific to the Samsung dock? Are there any alternatives to the Samsung car dock with this capability?
4. Whenever I mount the phone as a USB device it reboots itself after I unmount and disconnect the USB cable. Is this normal?
5. My phone is rooted but I have to have a password on it since I use it for work. Is there any way to NOT have it lock immediately after I use the power button to turn the screen off? In other words, I just want it to lock based on the Screen unlock settings timeout value. I know there are some widgets that will do this but I'd rather press the power button instead of scrolling to the screen with a widget.
Thanks for the help!
Argh... no one knows the answer to ANY of these???

If they're still in the list they're probably stock apps that are designed not to be uninstalled. You can remove updates for them but the original app stays. In this case, Titanium Backup is a generally recommended solution to really uninstall those. Just please check what you're doing before you uninstall it.
I snipped #2 and #3 and #5 below as I don't have an answer for those.

Not in my experience. Please make sure you have the current version for the drivers on your PC. If not running a stock ROM you may want to try that (ex. EL29 Rooted or not) and see how it behaves.

Nope, not stock apps. For instance I have two icons for Amazon... one color and one greyed out. Another for "Drawing Pad"... a program that I uninstalled, another dual icon for Google goggles, and another grayed out icon for PNF Lite, a game that I uninstalled.

OK, thanks for the feedback.. I didn't think that this was normal. I think I'll wait until ICS and then reload everything from scratch, including the SD card. I hoping that this rebooting is not damaging to the file/file structure. I only transfer files about once weekly to sync up passwords. The rest of the stuff I just move through dropbox and such.

Hmm... possible that you had these installed and moved to SDCard and they're no longer there? That may explain that as well.
And just so I'm making sure that we're talking the same thing, you're talking about inside Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All, correct?
I was actually referring to the "Applications" button off of the main screen, which shows all the applications... but you gave me an idea... I checked manage apps and removed (uninstalled) all the single instance grayed applications. The ones where both the color and gray icons are present are still there.
Is there a "cache" for the manage applications that I could try clearing?
Otherwise I'll try to uninstall and reinstall completely but I think I may have tried that route already.
Thanks for the help!
Couldn't you open the app drawer and push menu. Go to edit then long click on the icon and click the x to remove? Also in my experience when I remove an app a reboot should fix the apps still showing as greyed out. But you could also reboot recovery and wipe dalvik and cache it should remove those upon reboot

Thanks, I just D/Led the app. Yes, I always use the safe eject option on the PC. Maybe it's some crucial app that shouldn't be on the SD card that is doing this? I'm actually getting a little more concerned about this because I've come back to a the phone a few times with an "SD card was unexpectedly removed" message waiting and ALL the apps on the SD card greyed out.
+1 thanks to all of you!
I experience number 1 quite often too and yes it has to do with moving apps to sd. I think this phone has issues reading sd cards. Only way I can remember fixing this is by playing around and switching the apps back and forth between phone and sd or sometimes tapping on both icons for the app on the app drawer will magically make the grayed out one disappear lol.. I'm using my sd card from my og epic which is a class 2. Maybe this phone needs a better quality sd card.. All I know is if I move all my movable apps to sd card my phone will go into a bootloop frenzy until I remove the sd card and let it boot without it. Then I would put the card back on and hope it won't reboot while scanning media (which it did sometimes) till eventually I would get lucky n get a full scan without rebooting. Now I only move a few apps n not all lol

Hmm, I'll have to try the double-icon tap trick. I have not experienced the boot issue. The last two cards that I've used have been class 10 cards, the current one being a Samsung. I would hope that their phone would work well with their cards. I did have issues with the first version of the Patriot 32GB Class 10 card that I previously used in the phone, but a replacement card with updated firmware seemed to have alleviated most of the issues. Nevertheless I switched to a Samsung card since I have a lot of mission critical info on my phone.
On another note I just ran out of space on the "internal SD" storage and since I'm not sure if there is a way to force apps to move to the "external SD" card, I guess I won't be moving apps to SD any longer.
Actually the apps go directly into the sd. They never go into the internal memory. I know that sounds weird being that when moving apps it shows you the available internal memory but as you move them you will see it won't decrease. That's because its actually going to the sd card. I confirmed this by checking my sd space from the storage section and it did decrease. And my sd card is a Samsung its from the first Epic

Suggested Fixes
1. - This sounds as if you have a corrupt SD Card. I suggest reformatting it. If this doesn't work, switch roms and do a clean install of said rom...
2. - Manually clear the calls
3. - I think this was already answered
4. - Try answer 1 above
5. - Samsung made the pw protected lockscreen this way. You can try the widget if you like.
BTW, if my answers for 1 and 4 don't work, go back to stock UNROOTED and see if the issues persist. If they do, go back to sprint. Your phone is not acting the way it should...

I'm unclear about how the install location is actually determined... I know that if the SD card is unmounted then a lot of the normally available programs go gray so I know those are installed on the external SD card.... however, the "internal SD", or "USB storage" on my phone is almost completely full so not everything is getting installed on the external (plugged in) SD card. All the gameloft games installed in the USB storage area along with IVONA voices and a few other programs.

Apps have a separate place where they go. It has a built in 2GB for apps that's separate from the internal memory. So apps are either installed there or the external sd card. Your internal must be full with other stuff like music, movies, photos and things of that nature.
Edit: Game apps even tho they don't install into the USB storage they do copy all files like the music and stuff into the USB storage. That can also be draining your space

Fast Boot option may be the culprit
So, maybe the disappearing apps has nothing to do with storage type (sdcard, internal phone) and task killers?
This is actually a long-standing problem in Android OS, going back at least two years (donkey's years in this technology!)
Something about the interaction of the OS and an sdcard formated for holding apps creates odd behaviours.
Lots of complicated suggestions have been made, including reformatting sdcard, reinstalling ROMs, changing launchers (the one suggested here) and such.
None of these approaches seems really to solve the problem even in most cases.
What seems to be working for me (at least for the last week or so) is the following very simple tweak.
CUT TO THE SOLUTION BELOW -- SEARCH FOR ////
Some (not all) of my apps moved to SD (all by Titanium Backup Pro) have begun to disappear and (sometimes) reappear without warning after I began to add and delete large Virtual Machines created in QEMU from my 16GB SanDisc class 10 microSD card on my HTC Droid Incredible running rooted stock Verizon Android Froyo 2.2.3. I know this thread is far from my phone's "home base", but from what I can tell this problem with disappearing apps located on an sdcard is NOT determined by hardware or even Android version.
I also happen to use LauncherPro by Federico Carnales instead of the built-in HTC Sense launcher. I noted elsewhere on XDA that a user had suggested that because at least some (maybe all) launchers start before the SD Card that this may be a problem, especially if changes are made to the sdcard that the launcher did not perform, or was not active during their performance by other apps such as Titanium Backup. That fits my situation, because I unmounted the SD, physically removed it to a PC, and added/deleted large VM files to save (lots) of time. No problems of this sort before I did this, so there must be some connection.
I noted that other users have tried reformatting SD, substituting different brands of SD, using newer/older SD etc. None of these reliably helped. So I skipped these options.
//// The (simple!) solution I tried that SEEMS to work (only time will tell!) is buried in the main Android Settings (accessed from the Menu button while in Home screen). Under "Applications" there is a setting "Fast Boot" that I checked long ago and forgot about (it seemed like a good thing to do at the time). The text warns "Turn off to use some Market apps" (that shows the age of my 2-yr old used phone and Android OS -- ohmygosh!-- because it refers to Market rather than Google Play Store!) Anyway, I unchecked the option and rebooted the phone.
Yes, it took a bit longer to boot (maybe a whole minute!), but after waiting about another minute ALL my home screen apps had normal icons and loaded properly. Titanium Backup Pro batch scenarios confirmed there were no apps in a forced uninstalled state (i.e. I had not done the deed, the system somehow had done it or at least rendered the apps "invisible" to Titanium, which decided they needed reinstallation).
The only odd behaviour was that auto brightness was turned off after I unchecked Fast Boot and rebooted. Going into Android Settings > Display and rechecking "auto brightness" took care of that. No other oddities or strange behaviours thus far (but it has only been about an hour).
I will report anything further on this thread only (Samsung Fascinate > Fascinate Q&A > What just happend? apps on sdcard) if anything else requires reporting. Silence implies success!

(I am copying this post to other relevant threads, but will not post anything further elsewhere -- only there. This is a bit arbitrary (especially now that the chosen thread no longer is the most recent active one on this topic), but I hope this approach pleases the XDA sysops/admins)
