hey guys,
I'm on froyo on my desire, I remember the announcment about something regarding wireless access and wireless sync with the PC for apps and contacts and stuff like that, ...I forgot what is it called and cannot find my source..
where is that feature on the desire now that it has 2.2 !!
Cheers
Jackie
Anyone ?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I don't think they have sorted that out yet.
I think thats an extra site feature and they have not upgraded the site yet.
Menu -> settings -> Wireless & networks -> Portable Wi-Fi....
no its not the portable hot spot that I was talking about...
@lukehluke, Yea I think they still haven't sorted that out, it was supposed the be the Android Market website which allows you to login and install apps OTA to your device !!
I think what you mean is the ability to send stuff like maps, webpages, ...
from your browser to your phone. that is one big feature in froyo 2.2 which certainly rocks!
Its called chrometoPhone or something like this, there is also a plugin for firefox.

cheers

You mean this!
You can almost get the first part using AppBrain anyway, but you still need to manually "sync" the apps.

Dave

Is this at all possible? I still want to have my contacts, etc updated but I feel the interface is somewhat primitive!
Replace with what?
An alternative ...
K9 Mail maybe or better ...
You can't "replace" it you just start using something else.
Are there even Amy advantages to using the gmail app?
Any suggestions on alternatives? K9 Any good?
Ah gmail will be the best gmail tool you will find on the android lol. You don't mean Email tool? Do you use Gmail??
Yeah I maent the GMail application (it refers to itself as "Google Mail"). I'll just have to bear with it then till they upgrade it . I am though over the moon with the device the text input ROCKS! I do have a list of applications I need suggestions on though ... I'm used to the following on Windows Phoen so I need an Android variation ...
G-Alarm - A Comprehensive alarm application
G-Profile - easily change my profiles from night, work, home, etc, this would be great as a widget
Task Facade - A general task manager that will show all my running applications and let me close/switch
Wake On Text/Email/etc - As it says ... and stay awake until message has been read!
Lock Without using Power button - easy ...
That's about it for now

I know what you mean about the GMail app, if it's the same as in Android 1.6.. Ugly, flat and boring interface. Some customisation or nice animation wouldn't go amiss. I think the problem is that the Android team at Google don't really view the product UI as a whole, but instead as a load of separate modules that they can just chuck together. No time to make the GMail app look nicer for 2.1? No worries, just stick it out as it is. Media player still the worst/most basic there is? We'll worry about it another time, just stick it in, as is.
Depending on what you've come from, Android can seem amazing, or quite basic in it's vanilla form. I realise the intention is for manufacturers to add their own custom touches to the OS, like HTC have with Sense, and Motorola have with MOTOBlur. But really I think Google should be applying a bit more spit and polish to it's own core apps - the ones that come installed on all/most Android phones, and won't be messed with by handset manufacturers.
By this I mean GMail, Maps, Market, Browser, Gallery etc. Some of these are pretty good efforts (Browser), while others leave a lot to be desired compared to those found on other types of (non-Android) handsets.
I realise that they have to code for the lowest common denominator (low-end handsets) and not every handset can have a 1ghz Snapdragon in it, but I also feel that they are failing Android a little bit, by not ensuring the the latest hardware is taken advantage of in it's latest OS.
How hard would it be to tart up the GMail interface a little bit, while still keeping the same functionality? Not hard.
I know Android is about power and flexibility - don't like the Google way, then design or just install some other developers app instead. And that's great, but I really think there's something to be said for making sure your core experience is great, not just ok.
Disclaimer: I am basing this opinion on my experiences of Android 1.1, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 (2.0 admittedly is limited, since I do not own my own phone with Eclair yet, just flashed custom ROMs).
Feel free to flame away - I may flame myself when my Desire turns up by 1pm today, and I realise I'm tallking a load of BS when I'm presented the all singing, all dancing, beautifully animated new 2.1 apps from Google! But I doubt it...
BTW, don't get me wrong - I love Android, and I would not consider buying any other type of phone!
Why use the gmail application? I'm using the native email application and it works fine with gmail, lets me move all my mail to archive etc, receives it when its received (through push i think) and there is no reason why i would wantto use the local gmail application. In fact. It hasnt even been loaded up. lol
So I don't actually "have" to use th GMail application? I can just add the GMail account on Exchange/ActiveSync on the mail application? Sounds like a good idea! What are the disadvantages?
Any advice on the other applications I wanted?

Go in the Gmail application, settings, disable notifications.
You've pretty much turned off the Gmail Applcation then. Start using the other mail application or download one off the marketl.
I will give you some suggestions for your apps when I have time.

THANKS! I was kind of pissed when I notced you couldn't send bbc emails with GMail app ... madness ...
Is there a way to have a Gmail, Google Apps and Exchange all on the same device? Also does the mail app use IMAP idle I don't want to drain the battery by checking mail every minute ...
What uses more battery, gmail app or using HTC Mail to check for messages every half an hour?
Likely mail as GMail is push.

My bad ...
Still, I have a list of applications that I need asap .
So far, I've not found anything that even comes close to Galarm in terms of quality. I'm using Gentle Alarm though, which is really good compared to most other alarm apps for android.
Check out a program called Locale. That's meant to be really good for profiles and even does it location based
EDIT: Don't use a task manager, it's not good for your phone! There's an article that was posted up on here about the way android works, you don't need to kill tasks and reboot, etc. like you did with WinMo.

Fair does but how do I see the apps running in the background or what's an easy way to switch between apps?
I've heard of this "locale" before, seems to be very popular!
hold the Home button and it brings up a little task switcher, similar to Alt+Tab on a PC
Thank you! Goodbye, Advanced Task Killer!
Im thinking about moving from WinMo to Android. If you could help me with few questions...
I dont use any Google services, no gmail as I rather use myowndomain.com... I want to sync with Outlook via usb (bluetooth, yeah maybe but usb would be better); contacts, calendar and tasks... Is there good sync software out there?
The main reason for me to have a smartphone for a cell phone, is so I dont need always have a laptop with me. This brings me to opening and editing office apps; I found "Documents to Go" that seems to be OK, anyone using it?
To me its also important to automatically sync folders while syncing with Outlook, any good programs for that? Ive been using MobSync with WinMo and I guess it could work with this too? I found also Microsoft SyncToy, never tried it though...
Can I get my tasks listed on Android today screen like on WinMo? I need to have be reminded of my tasks, otherwise I would spend ½ of my day reading at XDA and not doing any of the things Im supposed to do...
Any comments and help is appreciated... Thanks!

HTC Sync comes with the phone, I also had some contacts stored on my company mail but I've started migrating to gmail because the really really neat integration and extremely useful features.

Hi there!
Did you already buy a Desire? I've used winmob before and you sound like you're totally schooled at Outlook with usb sync. HTC has exchange service support and you can sync through usb, It was long time ago since I ever used active sync but a friend of mine use it on Desire and he was not satisfied.
There is calendarpad that can show on start screen as activities or regular day view. Editing documents are thought to be done through Google docs as it is thought to be faster than a full scale office program on the phone. You can other wise get quick office premium for editing offline.

I recently had to flash my phone back to stock firmware and I lost the Samsung IM app... I have searched high and low to find it.
Does anyone know where it can be downloaded? I am sure it came with an update to Social Hub, but I dont even see that in the Samsung Apps Market.
Thanks!
PS: If someone maybe wanted to upload the apk for it, that would be pretty awesome.
BUMP! I am looking for this as well... And i dont think itll be as simple as the apk ccause its odexed on the phone itself...
go into Samsung Apps in your phone
then refresh, then it will show up
then install
then setup your accounts
then use IM
done
huh.. I don't have any such application on mine. These regional differences really are irritating.
here you go
just checked mine and its not there either, uk phone

Thank you,
Hello...this one works verry well.A question though, is thete a newer version of this app that also includes Facebook functionality/connectivity?
Pray explain
never knew that samsung had a default messenger program installed on the galaxy s. I remove most of the samsung programs when i install a new firmware.
Too bad this messenger comes with Samsung mail. only wanted the messenger app
Disable translating IM function
Hello...
Please tell me if somehow it's possible to disable the translating function of IM?
I looked in settings/translate but only it can do is to change the translating languages. It's very helpfully for me to disable it.
Thank's a lot.
can I use that if I'm on MIUI???
I'm so relieved about this, when I got my Desire (since my SE c905) I missed this program big time. You need a client from the market and version 1.8 from http://www.fjsoft.at/ you can do all sorts of synching with it, edit phonebook and calendar n stuff... best of all you can take screenshots without root
could you have edited playlists etc with this?
that annoyed me no end with my c905 - not ebing able to apart from on the phone itself
You cant but its worth writing to the developer, he's really sound and I'm pretty sure he's up for adding as much as is usefully possible with his app. At least you'll get an answer to know whether it is possible or not.
I should add, you can use it to send texts and make calls from your PC using your phone.
Top spot & thanks for the heads up, used this loads when I had SE's. Don't miss the phones but did miss this when I moved across to android.
Sweet ! Never expected that, also used this program alot with my old SE.
This is sweet! Haven't tried it out yet but have fond memories of it on my old Sony Ericsson devices!

My "myPhoneExplorer" cannot connect to my Desire. Have SDK, ADB drivers that are displayed problemfree in device manager (vista 32bit). USB debugging is selected. Have tried with different connection types; charge-only, usb storage, HTC sync... no difference. so, what can i do ?
HTC Desire, on original froyo, unrooted & unbranded... suggestions?

Its possibly something to do with the Facebook contacts being involved. Be nice if it gets fixed, well the dev is aware of the problem anyway so maybe a fix will come. I'd prefer to be able to backup/manage my phone offline with MPE so it would be great to see this fixed.
Be sure to encourage the dev with some Euros, I gave him 10E back in my c905 days but I think he deserves a little more for this new revelation (along with an email with some requestifications)
@iLHaNroID, as the above poster says, do you have the client installed from the market? I connect by USB (faster than WiFi) and selecting HTC-SYNC.

Hmm.. Nope! coz I thought it was necessary for conn over wifi only.

Heyhey,
Has anyone notice the "touch.facebook.com" page has recently changed? It seems to be redirecting to "m.facebook.com".
According to this source (http://www.redmondpie.com/facebook-launches-new-unified-mobile-website/) Facebook have done it to make it easier for themselves, and it should automatically adjust based on your device.
Now, AFAIK, the Desire Z can do roughly everything. So does anyone know why I'm getting a fairly basic "m.facebook.com"? It misses out features such as being able to check in to places - something which the touch site did well.
I am aware there are apps - but I am generally not in good reception areas, Opera still operates quickly, whereas the apps just sit there.
So, is there a way to force my phone into tricking Facebook into providing me the decent version?
Regards,
Chris

is there a way to do this for opera? kinda miss the touch site too
On Opera, I have found that I have to go to "opera:config" and there is an option in there to change the useragent.
I've managed to get a site which looked similar to the touch.facebook.com. I suppose I just need to find the correct useragent to use to enable places again now.
Hey thanks for the heads up!

The "Places" functionality, and probably everything else you were looking for, is in the "More" dropdown. I use the new m.facebook.com to check in and do basically everything. It's a decent clone of the iPhone app.
Thanks for the reply.
I wish I had a "more" dropdown menu at the moment!
I did manage to get into the Places with one of the useragents I tried, but it didn't have the check-in option anywhere.
I really don't mind using the Facebook app, it is just a little slower, and misses out features such as event walls.
It's because Facebook plans on deprecating the touch site.
