I'll try.
I have a Virgin UK Desire that came with a 405 Rom. I updated it to a later WWE Rom. It worked fine but kept the Virgin boot screen.
I then tried to install Froyo from a signed zip. This almost bricked it but I managed to recover it by doing the same thing again but with a goldcard in that I'd made on another HTC phone.
So be careful!

I have a Virgin branded (just a spinning logo on startup) desire, and I used the instructions on this site. mikesouthby.co.uk/2010/08/htc-desire-updating-to-froyo-official-ota-for-network-branded-handsets/comment-page-1/#comment-5870 (just add the three w's)
i hope it helps as it worked for me, and i'm now on 2.2 on an unbranded Desire..

i couldnt wait and installed this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
have no problem.

so far you have a generic rom and virgin media logo you need a goldcard to flash to the new rom froyo 2.2 from sd card.
i was in the same situation but after making a goldcard and flashing through sdcard it update successfully and i don't see virgin media logo anymore.

Generic ROM on a Virgin Desire

Okay, so my friend decided to 'debrand' his desire. It was a Virgin branded phone with the 1.15.405.4 CL155070 firmware installed. First he followed the debranding instructions on modaco.com to install the Generic ROM yet for some reason the Virgin splash screen remained. So I gave him a link to the 1.15.405.3 ROM I used (before .4 had come out) and the same thing, the Virgin splash screen remained.
I'm confused since my own HTC had an Orange splash screen and when I debranded it that was replaced with the 'Quietly Brilliant' splash screen.
I can get my head round the fact that the Virgin ROM is pretty much the Generic ROM, but can someone explain the splash screen situation to me please?
I am the aforementioned friend. Everything went through as expected. Would love to shed some light on this.
Cheers!
Shameless bump as we've rolled down a few pages, anyone have any ideas?
I have a virgin branded desire and I was able to replace my virgin media boot logo, but I rooted my phone to be able to do it.
The process is pretty simple, you need to be in the "recovery menu" (if you read up on how to root your phone, you'll find out how to get into this menu, it's the same menu you go into to flash rooted roms) and just flash a new boot image.zip from the SD card.
Boot logo changing instructions here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=672339
Not fussed about the actual branding of it, as their is very minimal branding from Virgin anyway. I'm more interested in being able to update with HTC's generic firmwares.

Im on generic rom coming from Virgin, If their were any softwarte updates i would try but their is not, so can't. lol.
Everytime i check it says i already have the latest firmware.
im guessing it will be ok, but obviously you WILL lose root if ya update.
Yep my theory (by numbers) is that virgin use the generic firmware so it will update at the same time as HTC.. the virgin splash screen must be stored deeper in root.
Its just strange how my orange splash was replaced with the quietly brilliant one when I flashed it with the generic.

it's happened to me too
i think that all brand rom have virgin boot animation inside, and it depend on the device imei number.so at first boot (while showing htc logo on white background) it determine which boot animation to load.
The rooted updates just don't update the boot image. That's all. You can update it manually (see my post above), but it doesn't matter, the logo is separate from the firmware, so if you flash the "generic" firmware, even though you'll still have the VM logo, you'll get the "generic" updates.
So did anyone manage to get the OTA to 2.2 once they put generic 1.21 firmware onto their virgin desires?? It worked fine for my orange debranded desire using the same method but my mates Virgin branded will not see the 2.2 OTA update like mine did???
My phone was already rooted with clockworkmod so I flashed it by hand. I was being too nervous when this thread was started. Rooting was a good thing.
Any of the unbranded RUUs will get rid of the branding. Custom ROMs (that you apply as zip files) won't update certain parts of the phone.

the question: is my HTC Desire is locked version cuz it has the orange logo on the back side ?
My Desire is also Orange UK branded (black one, with the logo on the battery cover...) and it was locked. But I unlocked it and installed generic WWE ROM.

how 2 unlock ....n do i need 2 do that cuz my phone is working w any sim now...
If it works with any SIM already, then it's unlocked (mine was locked, so I had to unlock it).
In that case, your Desire is only branded. You see the orange logo when it boots up, right? If that doesn't bother you, then keep it. If it bothers you, then install generic ROM (you can find them in the Desire Android Development forum).

thanks a lot
you will still need a goldcard to install generic rom
i also got my phone unlocked through htcunlock website. now it just the branded one with orange. so this means that i need a goldcard to intall any rom on it? say for example i want to install Pays Desire ROM, i need goldcard to do so?
please help as i seriously want to install rom
thanks
The way I understand it, since you own branded phone, you still need to pass CID (sd card ID) check in order to install new rom, and you can do it with goldcard
Yes, I had to use goldcard on my branded desire to install a generic ROM.
tried with goldcard but after 45 attempts i gave up completely
You must be doing something wrong.
Would you share with us at what step you get stuck? Maybe someone can help...

yep, he forgot to root it first
no i didnt forgot to root. i tried each and every step over and over again, as told here in the forums and also at modaco... but wasnt able to. can someone please post a guide for doing the same? an easy one.... step by step guide with links to the required files.
you need to provide step by step details - what did you do, and where it stucked
I'd also like to put a generic HTC ROM on my Orange Desire.... I found flashing winmo phones easy... but I cant find any Andriod noob guides that really explain how to do it easily enough.... I dont even know what rooting is to be honest!

Branded devices to get froyo! - How to

Hi I have a Branded Desire from T-Mobile and I need some help. I have been reading the forums but I am still confused.
I want to get the update Froyo onto my phone.
What do I need to do? Do I need to root it? Or flash it? Or just unlock it?
Thank you for your help
Raminder
Debrand it to a stock ROM and do OTA updates. Use the goldcard when doing updates though just to be safe (made during debrand process)

Guys, i'm not an Android newbie but never flashed ROM's etc - could I have a bit of help pls?
I've got a Vodafone ROM, going to debrand my Desire, using a Goldcard and then install the generic 2.1 sense ROM and then request OTA update. Got that whole process figured out etc
What I want to do is backup everything first. I'm not rooted and i'm going to use the 30 day trial of mybackup to backup data. I want to backup my apps too if possible - am i right in thinking Astro have a program to go this?
Will it all be fine to do backups to my SD first, create a goldcard on another SD, flash the other sense ROM, then update to froyo and then finally take out the goldcard, put the other SD back in and restore everything?
Any help would be appreciated pls!
After debranding you can sign in to the android market and download the apps again from the downloads option.

RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121865
If i put this on and then checked for updates would this allow me to update to Froyo 2.2????

Debranding is flashing the phone to a stock ROM which doesn't have any network branding. It doesn't unlock the phone to use on other networks. If your phone is locked to a network you could always buy a code from eBay to unlock it.

Yes it should work. I use a WWE ROM as it has more languages and apps available for it. It also worked just fine for me on the OTA update.

Tried both roms europe and wwe and kept getting error 131 customer id error any advice
I'm going down the de branding root now. I'm on a branded t-mobile desire in the UK.
Already created my goldcard, currently downloading RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
Has anyone got any newbie tips that i should be aware of.
Hopefully should be able to download the froyo OTA then.

Usually caused by dodgy goldcard

After you debrand, do you get any updates from your carrier that could mess it up, or do you just get them from HTC directly?

[Q] Error 131 on Orange uk HDH

Hi all hope everyone has had good xmas i recently got my HDH just before xmas on contract from Orange uk ive got it unlocked but would really love to get rid of the huge amount of bloatware the poor thing came with. I would like to return to a stock HTC rom and im currently using RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed and everytime i run it i constantly get this message ERROR [131]: CUSTOMER ID ERROR i have used the orginal 8gb which came with the phone and a 2gb sd to create my goldcard. Ive created the gold card multiple time but still ge the customer id error message ive used the goldcardtool and also created the goldcard the manual way by editing with a hexeditor and still the same result. Please can any point me in the right direction the current rom on the phone is 1.40.61.2 and the Hboot is 0.85.0007.
Regards
Hi,
Hope you had a great xmas also. Your DHD will need to have SuperCID, Your DHD is checking the CID (Customer ID) of the Stock HTC Update and it doesn't match the CID provided by Orange UK.
You can follow This Guide and just follow the steps.
Once your CID is unlocked you can flash anything regardless.
Hope this helps.
Hi,
Thankyou for your quick response it worked a treat no more orange bloatware what a relief. I presume i do not need to keep the goldcard in the system and i can format my 8gb sd back to normal card?. Also the ruu i listed above is the latest one i presume from htc if you know by any chance, anyway thankyou again its so nice shame on you orange.
Regards
No, the ROM you listed is not the latest. If you flash the latest HTC ROM you will lose Root, ENG HBOOT, S-OFF.
Thankyou ill leave it at this one for now then have a good new year
Regards
thnks for the Good Guide...was searching for it...
@OP - As you have already installed an RUU u might have lost Root and S-Off already.
you can goto Settings - about phone - system updates and install the latest update.

RUU for H3G 2.29.771.3?

Hi Guys
I'm taking a look at a friends Desire which has stopped booting beyond the white HTC logo. Fastboot is still accessible and I've attempted to clear storage with no luck. I also tried to find the newest RUU on shipped-roms for H3G UK (2.25), but this complained that I was trying to downgrade the bootloader and exited. Is it possible to create a gold card without a booting phone easily?
The phone is currently running 2.29.771.3 and branded for H3G/Three UK. Is this software version available elsewhere?
Thanks

Read bortaks guide in my sig, for a goldcard u would have to put ur sdcard into another phone and do it that way. In the guide, go down to resources and there a link to the 2.3 gb upgrade from HTCDev and u can run that coz u dont need a goldcard, its made for pretty much all, brands, region etc etc. It will work coz i used it before and im H3G aswell.
