Is the 2.2 OTA upgrade being held back at the moment? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I was offered the froyo upgrade via the OTA notification during the weekend, but decided to wait to see what issues people would have with the update.
Today I decided to install the update, but I can no longer get it - "Your phone is up to date".
All version numbers are the same as before, ie firmware 2.1-update1, build 1.21.405.2 and so on.
With my old Hero, I held back the 2.1 upgrade for several days, but always could check for the upgrade and see it as available for download.
Has the OTA upgrade been temporarily been held back, or am I missing something here?

You can always grab the zip file off HTC servers and update it manually (that's what I did on Sunday, not having WiFi and limited 3G traffic).

ZIP File
Hi I've looked at the HTC site, could u give me a link to the zip file? PLEASE!!!!!!

Oh, well. Now it's available again.

How do you update the zip file manually?

1. Grab : http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
2. Copy the file to your microSD card and name it update.zip (newb warning: not update.zip.zip)
3. Power off your phone.
4. Hold down the VOLUME DOWN button and power it back on.
5. The phone will now search for files like PB00IMG.zip, etc. This is normal. Scroll down to recovery and press the POWER button.
6. When you see the /!\ symbol, press the POWER button and the Volume Up button at the same time. You should be presented with a menu and one of the options should be "Apply sdcard:update.zip".
7. Use the trackball to navigate to "apply sdcard:update.zip" and select it.
8. When you see "Install from sdcard complete", select "reboot system now".

is this method exactly the same as downloading direct from your phone? So will we still continue to recieve ota updates? And does it keep your data?

yes it will.

sweet doing it now. came up with Can't open /cache/recovery/command, but everything else seems to be doing alright

Can anybody help me with a question, I rooted my voda locked desire and flashed it with a rooted official froyo rom from this site, I wanted to unroot so as to get any further ota updates as normal but have since found it is easer said than done with a 0.80 bootloader, so my question is would this do the trick for me ? Thanks in advance

OTA Update 2.2 FR
Hi,
On my Desire I cannot get the OTA (version 1.21.405.2 for the moment). It tells me that the phone has the latest update.
When I try to open the french support page on HTC.com and choose the Desire in the list I get the message that this page is not available.
The link to download the file directly from HTC site is broken as well.
Does anyone have a link to get this file from another server?
Thanks
Thomas

try this
Debranding procedure:
1.Download the generic unbranded software here: http://androidfiledepot.com/Storage/Desire/Stock%20Roms/RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
2.Run the software downloaded in step 1.
(Windows may prompt you to reboot when the phone switches to bootloader mode. If so you'll need to reboot and run the software again.)
3.This will flash your Desire with a generic HTC version of the OS.
4.Enjoy!
5.If you used the SD card that came with the phone, you can copy your backup back onto the SD card next time you connect your phone in "disk drive" mode.

If that is 2.1, I don't understand why it is listed as '1.21.110.4', If it is 2.1 Thank you so much but could someone explain to me how the version number works out?
Many Thanks.
I used that one and then used the OTA zip file to upgrade.(OTA_Bravo_Froyo_TMO_UK_2.12.110.2-1.21.110.4_release3uop1mw9unpc376h.zip)
Can't seem to find it online ATM but I'll upload it to Shipped Roms for you.
1.21.110.4 was just HTC's build number, 2.1 on an unbranded Desire is 1.21.405.2. The Desire was only ever available on 2.1 onwards
Only the FroYo RUUs start 2.xx.xxx.x

If I was to use '1.21.110.4' and flash it, will I be able to update it to 2.2 OTA and will it be branded?
Sorry for vast amount of questions.
I've uploaded it but it won't appear on the site until it's been checked and verified.
If you need it now, you can download it from Shipped Roms via FTP - it's in the Bravo folder.
If you use the '1.21.110.4' RUU and update it with the '2.12.110.2' zip you can then update to 2.2 OTA.
As they're all T-Mobile files, the phone will be branded.

Could you instruct me on how to apply the update file after I had flashed the ROM to 1.21.110.4. Thanks for your help.
Once you're back running the stock 1.21.110.4 ROM, download the OTA file and rename it update.zip (not update.zip.zip) and copy it to the root of your SD card
Then turn the phone off and turn it back on holding the volume down button. On the HBOOT screen (with the 3 Androids at the bottom) use the volume down button to select 'Recovery' and press power to select.
On the next screen with the red !, hold volume up and press power, use the volume down button to highlight 'apply SD:update.zip' and press power to select
Then follow the instructions
[Edit] EddyOS beat me to it! [/EDIT]
1. Rename the downloaded zip file "update.zip" and copy it to your microSD card via USB
2. Turn off your phone
3. Hold down the "Volume Down" button as you power the phone back on
4. A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down to "recovery" and press the "Power" button
5. When you see the triangle with an exclamation mark symbol, press the "Power" and "Volume Up" buttons at the same time
6. From the menu that appears, select "Apply sdcard:update.zip"
7. When the screen displays "Install from sdcard complete" select "reboot system now" and wait for the phone to power back up
Thank you. I can't manage to install the ROM I am new to the Clockworkmod recovery and don't know how to flash to the ROM first before update. Yet again I ask for instructions please.
Clockworkmod recovery isn't necessary - just connect your phone to your PC in "Charge only" mode and with "usb debugging enabled" then run the RUU file on your PC.

Actually Clockworkmod is not just "not necessary". You cant patch up a manufacturer version of software via Clockwork.
You've got to run the RUU first as exe (or PB99IMG.zip), then when the RUU wipes out Clockwork, and flashes the Android recovery in its place, you've got to patch the OTA onto it, via Eddy's instructions.
To install the RUU:
Turn off phone
Turn it on again holding the back button
Connect to the PC
Run the RUU
You understand flashing the RUU will wipe the phone and reset it to an 'out of the box' state, don't you?
EDITED: Just saw your message now 'EddyOS', thank you.
Update: Recieved an Error[140] BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR, What shall I do?
Read my last post. If it still doesn't work, try this:
1. Start the RUU and when at the first main screen move the window to the bottom of the screen (otherwise it'll stay on top of everything else)
2. Click 'Start>Run' and type
%temp%
And click 'OK'
3. Browse to the newest folder created in that folder
4. Copy the ZIP file called 'Rom' to your Desktop
5. Rename it PB99IMG (so the full file name is PB99IMG.zip but not PB99IMG.zip.zip)
6. Copy it to the root of your SD card
7. Turn off your phone and turn it on again whilst holding the volume down button
8. The phone should boot into HBOOT and read the ZIP file and ask you to start the update. Assuming it does, follow the instructions and once done you'll be back to 100% stock 2.10.405.2
9. Once back up and running get the 2.29.405.2 OTA using your Wi-Fi connection
Main version is older!
Update Fail!
Do you want to reboot your device?
Can't help you then, phone is ****ed. You'll have to flash a stock WWE ROM (e.g. 2.29.405.2) and go from there...

Troubles with Installing OTA 1.72.405.3

OK. I have read a few things but am still lost
I have an HD that will not upgrade to OTA 1.72.405.3 it crashes at about 20%
I have to remove battery and restart
Now can someone help me how to get the upgrade running as i installed superuser just to remove some of the apps like amazon facebook ect
I have reset my phone to factory settings and formatted the sd card,
If someone could give me a easy guide..as I dont want to brick it
Thank you
Similar issue here,
i've used su a way ago to remove some pre-installed apps like amazon MP3, facebook, etc. Then played a while with DHD Revolution ROM, then went back to the stock rom (just restored it from a backup). Now i can't update to 1.72: it crashes at about 20%. Tried to do a factory reset, still the same. It says: the md5's for /system/app/facebook.apk don't match.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get the phone completely back to a stock state?
This is what I got from HTC
Thank you for contacting us. In regards to fota update I can help you with that. We advise you to check followings ; If the update fails for some reason this is something the customers can try. The OTA update is downloaded to the phone and is placed in a folder called Download on the SD card. Using a file explorer, browse to this folder and you should find the downloaded update. The file should have an obvious name, beginning with OTA_x_Froyo_....... Tghis file will be a zip file. Rename the file to update.zip. In general, you do not need to put in .zip, as it will already be flagged as a zip file, and doing so would end up with a file called update.zip.zip, which will not work. To run these update follow these instructions: 1. Take the battery out and put it back in without starting the phone. 2. Press and hold the Volume Down button. 3. While still holding Volume Down, press and release the Power button. 4. Keep pressing Volume Down until you see 3 skateboarding androids on the bottom of the screen. release the Volume Down button and wait a few seconds 5. Press Volume Down to navigate to Recovery in the menu and press the Power button to select it. 6. When you see a triangle with a exclamation mark !, press Volume Up and Power at the same time. 7. You should now see blue text and the option to Apply sdcard:update.zip 8. Navigate to it using the Volume keys, and select it using the Power button. The phone will hopefully now install the update and after its done reboot the phone
And this is what happened when I ran it..
I have reinstalled the amazon app.
E/ can't find caceh/recovery/command
If I download the update via settings/about phone/system software updates it says E/ can't find checeh/recovery/command
If i press volume up and the powwer button it then says

Thank you
Update fails if you remove any system apps.
You can still get back to stock by following this guide.
If you update to 1.72 using that method you will loose root forever though.
You can do it this way if you want 1.72 with root.
Oh yeah don't use the root package from that thread. It will keep force closing. Use this one instead.
Sent from my performance enhanced Desire HD.
i removed my system appd.
So now i get the status 7 message as well! How can i get the apps back? :/

Ok first we need some info.
What rom and android version are you on?
Are you s-off?
Are you rooted?
Do you have busybox and the su app installed?
You must first root your phone. This easiest way to do this on a DROID Incredible is using unrEVOked... head to the unrEVOked site to root your phone, then it will install Clockwork Recovery, thus getting you one step further to installing CM7.

If you used unrevoked and it compleeted without error then you should be fully rooted and s-off, and have clockwork mod recovery. I'm not sure why rom manager wont work, however it is not recomended to use rom manager to install a rom anyways.
First go to menu settings applications and make sure fastboot is not checked.
Go to your sdcard and delete any PB31IMG.zip files, and make sure the cyanogenmod rom zip is on there.
Power off the phone and wait a couple secs.
Hold down the volume down button and the power button untill a white screen appears (hboot). Note at the top it should say s-off, if it says s-on you can stop here and report back.
Use vol down key to scroll to recovery, and the power button to select.
Recovery will pop up with a screen of options. Navigate up and down with the volume keys and press the trackball to select, press power button to go back.
If you dont have a backup made i would start by doing so, select backup & restore and then backup.
Next go to the mounts and storage menu and format everything availabe except emmc and sdcard. Then go to the advanved menu and whipe dalvik-cache.
Select install zip from sdcard and then navigate to the cyanogen mod zip and select it. This will install the rom.
Once its done installing select reboot phone and it should boot up to cyanogen.
Note that this first boot may take a long time up to 15 minutes so be patient. Once bootet you will need to install the super user app and busybox to regain root.
it's also possible you may need to update your superuser app as well
i rooted my Dinc. with unrevoked almost a year ago,
Diego method did not work.
so,
i went to menu - settings - applications,
i do not see fastboot?
and
pressed manage applications,
SD card is empty.

HBOOT 1.09.0099
Please give me some help person who know more about thins problem!!!
flashing the recovery is not properly done i guess .
i prefer you to follow the below steps
Step 1: Flashing the Custom Recovery UI by XDA.cn
Again, make sure your device is S-OFF.
Again, make sure your memory card is formatted FAT32.
Place the PG76IMG.zip file into your phone SD card.
Disable Fast Boot from your phone settings (Settings > Power > Disable Fastboot)
Turn your phone off.
Hold down the "power" button and the "volume down" button for a few seconds till you see the HBOOT screen.
Don't press anything. The system will scan for some files and it will prompt you for an update. Move the cursor to OK (volume up) to start the flashing process.
After it finishes, press the "power" button to restart the system.
Let Android boot and delete the PG76IMG.zip file from your SD card via USB.
Congrats! Custom recovery has been installed. Process to step 2.
Step 2: Flashing the rooting script by XDA.cn
Copy the root.zip file into your phone SD card.
Turn your phone off.
Boot into recovery: Hold down the "power" button and the "volume down" button for a few seconds till you see the HBOOT screen. Let it do its thing and then select "RECOVERY".
At the recovery menu, use the volume buttons to select "install zip from sd card".
Then select "choose zip from sd card".
Then find the "root.zip" file on the list.
Select "YES".
Let the script do its thing till you see "Install from sd card completed".
Select "Go Back" on the menu till you find the "power off" option and select it.
Turn your phone back on and let Android boot
you can use the custom recovery PG76IMG.img or else clockworkmod recovery from
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
cwm recovery have more options ,so i prefer you to use that .
you can find those FILES in the source which i have specified.

[Q] Is there anyway to apply a OTA zip from recovery with S-On?

My m8 is still S-On and I'm trying to install the latest 3.28.401.6 OTA zip update through recovery and it keeps failing. Before I continue in vain, is it actually possible to install an OTA like this with S-On?
Hi Gold_Diesel,
I assume you got the stock recovery installled!? And renamed the OTA file to update.zip, as well as placing it onto your internel storage?
Edit: did you trie this methos provides by the Android Revolution HD Team (THANK GUYS!)
Method 2 (for users without root access) | This method won't work on the S-ON HTC One M8
Make sure you have the stock (original) recovery on your device
Make sure you're running a completely unmodified operating system. Additional files like Superuser.apk or su binary are allowed, you just can't have any system files changed or removed (due to the MD5 check)
Make sure you have a reasonable amount of battery charge remaining
Make sure the OTA update you're about to install matches the software version on your device
Copy the OTA update.zip package to your device (internal storage preferred)
Turn OFF the device (make sure fastboot mode is disabled in settings)
Hold your volume down and power keys until the bootloader starts up
Using the volume keys, navigate down to RECOVERY and press power
You are now in stock recovery mode. You should see nothing more than a (sometimes spinning) Android with the red exclamation mark above it (an empty black screen is also possible). Wait for a few seconds
First hold volume up, then (with volume up held down) press power button to enter the main recovery menu. This keys combination may vary from device to device. Try different keys combination if the above one doesn't work (might be all three keys all together too)
Navigate down to "apply from phone storage" text and press power to confirm
Navigate to the location where you copied the OTA update.zip package and press power to confirm
Wait (sometimes you might need to follow further instructions on the screen) until the update process is finished
Once system is booted you should see a confirmation about the successfully flashed update.

If so, what's the error message you get?
