Why would you need to root your FroYo? - Desire General

We finally got Apps2SD, we've got 720p video recording and we have wifi tethering. So just out of curiosity - why people still want to root their phones?
(I think we should leave the custom ROMs case)

Two important things to me are: Market Access/Enabler (I'd be seriously pissed if I couldn't buy apps) and slight modifications to the system like menu button to unlock, ...

Becase even witg froyo app2sd i only have 15mb left.

Because using AdamG's OpenDesire 3.0.2 ROM, I have loads of large meg apps installed, like Google Earth, and still have about 138 meg of phone memory left

Dont forget overclocking and underclocking.
Sent from my HTC Desire

The Froyo app2sd is rubbish at the moment, only three apps I have installed at the moment can be moved to the SD card... there for rooting is essential.

Well, you can kinda hack FroYo's Apps2SD Moving ANY app to SD on FroYo (or how to Enable all grayed out 'Move to SD' buttons)
But I agree about the market...

The ability to do full backups and restore them is my main reason

Adblock...?

Because it's fun! Hacking devices to see how far you can take them. I have tons of old phones (mostly winmo) I keep around for hacking.

Why root?
To get rid of the STUPID HTC lock screen and replace it with the standard FroYo.
Piece of sh*t is constantly unlocking itself in my pocket, and you only have to do a slight downwards slide to open it! USELESS!

Adding OpenVPN
Buetooth Wireless Tether (Uses WAY less battery than wifi tether)
Unless of course,someone knows better??
cheers
CQU

So yeah, that's the thrill of it - to hack stuff. I totally agree with that but also I don't want to loose the warranty on my expensive phone and now there are way fewer reasons to root it. So I think HTC did their job well with FroYo.

All of the above for me

Put your phone in your pocket with the power button at the top so that it doesn't get accidentally pressed. Sorted.

I always do. My jeans STILL manage to lightly tap the power button then my leg rubbing on the screen still unlocks it!
(before stating the obvious "face the screen to the outside" so your leg doesnt rub, I just can't do it. Lean over a desk and the screen cops the pressure and could crack. No thanks!)
(sidenote: my iphone never unlocked itself, EVER, the power button needed more force, and the slide motion of unlocking could never be done by legrubbing)

For me the number one reason is Gingerbread. I'm happy with the stock ROM and adding customizations is not that necessary (if thou I like it).
But when Gingerbread arrives (Android 3.0) I don't think that HTC will offer it to desire users and then, if I'm rooted, I hope that there will be custom ROMs taking Gingerbread to my Desire.

How do you do this? I also think it's stupid and have the same problem answering calls as I take it out of my jeans (people who wear loose pants might not have this issue).

How is it possible for a capacitive touch screen to get rubbed by jeans and pick up a touch motion?? Arent capacitive screens made only to register contacts from our fingers only? No matter how hard i tried i could never answer a call with something other than my hands.. i just cant understand those discussions.. unless im mistaken ofcourse and a capacitive screen can register touches from other things aswell.. someone enlighten me please?

Phone picks up and hangs up when pulled from pocket

The drag up/down (accept/deny call) is really idiotic when the phone is in a pocket, where you have to pull up the phone from the pocket when you get a call. Do anybody have any solution to this problem? are there any alternatives accepting/denying calls?
Yes, this is very frustrating for me also, haven't found a solution though!
Use Lockbot Pro from the market
You can choose from several types of locking screens, and modify them.
Word of advice: get the Pro version, it is much more stable then the free one
Thanks, I'll give it a try.
@fluor: I know a guy that use fluor as nickname...are you from norway by any chance?
Lockbot pro, is a bit lame, it only works intermittently!
I have only tried the free version, and have no intention of trying the paid one, just on the off chance that it may work correctly!!
Surely, a developer would wish to entice someone into paying for their app, by making a trial/free version that actually works!!
What's the bloody point, in making a free app that doesn't work properly, as if I would pay for this rubbish!
HTC should have designed an unlock screen that doesn't hang up your call, simply when you take it out of your pocket, I mean, is it really to much to ask, for a device that costs this much!
It's pretty basic stuff really.... I don't want an elephants ear on a bun, I just don't want to keep hanging up on people when I take my phone out of my bloody pocket!
i also hope for a free app. i see there are a lot when i search for lock, but not sure which actually work.
for the hang up problem, a workaround is to put the phone the other way when you insert it into the pocket, so it picks up instead of hanging up when you pull it up. however it's stupid.

You say Lockbot Pro is lame, but have only tried the free version??
I think you mean the developer is lame if he made an unstable free version?
All I can say is that it works perfectly for me, and I can only recommend it based on my own experience.
I had a few problems with the free version, yes...but I took the chance on the Pro version anyways...after all, what's $1.99 or whatever anyway.
And, now I have a lockscreen that works as I want it
also using lockbot pro now to get rid of the useless lock screen from sense.
but it doesnt solve this prob, as it doesnt lock on incoming calls
I have a workaround for you.
Put your desire in your pocket top first.
Then when you take it out of the pocket, if the screen is pressed, then "gesture" will be the opposite of what is needed to answer the call.
You will do a gesture up instead of down to answer the call. That is how I do it
Pattern unlock is useless too. You still get the slide to answer/reject screen before the pattern thingy comes up.
Is there a way we can solve this with a cooked rom? I'm trying to wait for the 2.2 rom to be ready, but this problem is annoying enough to flash now I think.

No pulling te screen up doesn't do anything, while pulling it up answers it.
I had a htc hero for about 8 months, always had it top down face towards leg.
Use the desire in the same way and never ever had a call in my pants.
I can't believe HTC have made such an elementary mistake.
I ended up buying a flip case for the phone. Solved the problem and protects the phone and screen as well.
Similar Problem
I have a very similar problem.. Because the vibration is so weak I often do not feel the phone go off in my pocket. Due to the warmth of my leg and moving around the phone continuously picks up by itself.
Does anyone else have this problem?
This is very annoying!!!
If I could only choose to answer calls by the hard button, it would solve it.
Has anybody (rooted) tried using the stock lock screen (the horizonal swipe as opposed to vertical), could this solve your problem?

Yes. Search the forum for vanilla/rotary.
has anyone found a simple solution to this? I do put my phone in top first... but this means i am hanging up on people when i don't want to.
I want to be able to pull my phone out of my pocket and check who it is then decide what to do.

[App] Yay my first app called SmartLock 0.1

Hi all!
Ive been taking stuff from the XDA-Dev Community for a long time so I thought while I learn C# Programming ill post my Apps up here (as a means of giving something back and having a fresh supply of guinea pigs heh heh heh). Anyway this is ver 0.1 and i am a beginner so use with caution.
Also I only just finished it so I would like to hear about feature requests if possible. ANNDD i made this using the Samsung SDK so i dont know which fones it will work with i doubt it will work with HTC as it uses the light sensor (the only thing used from it). So if someone wants to share with me the code on how to read the HTC light sensor (get the Lumens) then I can make it dual compatible .
Anyhoo this is the point of the app: I dont like to lock my phone with the password all the time as i usually listen to MP3s and I dont like the fact that my fone (i8000) sometimes unlocks the screen on receiving a message or email etc. The worst thing is when youre walking and happily listening to your MP3s and then suddenly you hear beeps from your phone as it presses against your leg!
If i lock it i have to put a password on it if i dont lock it sometimes the End Key gets pressed and turns the screen on or some event on the phone turns the screen on and then you have to dig it out your pocket and the Sleeve of the phone and close it again.
Maybe its just me but it bugs me very much.
So what this app does is when the screen is turned on in low light surroundings it presents another lock screen. As im not very good with graphics (i dont even have a program icon ) etc its just three buttons. The first is displayed at the top, tap it show the second and then the third and then it becomes unlocked and you can use it as normal. So next time you receive a message it wont be bugging you that your fone may be making a phonecall or typing gibberish to someone in your address book and so you can listen to your mP3's in peace.
Attached are screen shots of the proggie and the CAB file to install.
Please give me Feature suggestions and other App suggestions im hoping to be fluent in C# before summer is over.
PS: Im testing the app myself so im not sure about battery life etc. I didnt use polling of the screen power state rather i used the Power Notifications and the message queue method.
Looks cool, I would test it but I have a HTC phone so I cant . Just one question, how would you go about handling this in the dark, will it just lock or is there some way to quickly switch it off on unlock?
Also, if you want some buttons made, pm me I am a graphic design student and would have no trouble doing it for you

In the dark the three buttons will appear on the screen and you have 10 seconds to press them. Once those buttons are pressed you can use the phone until you lock it again by turning the screen off (not the full Pass Code to lock but just turning the screen off with a quick press). This way if you turn the fone on in a dark room you still have the ability to use it. However if it accidently turns on in your pocket the same three buttons are shown but after 10 seconds it will turn back off.
Ok thanks well if you find a way to port it to HTC I would definetly use it.
Its not so much a major port I just dont have an HTC Device to test it on and the only thing i need is the api to get a value from the light sensor if you can find me that i can put an HTC version in one second .
Through the power of search
I hope this works for you http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/07/htc-light-sensor-sdk.html
I need an app like this, my wife hates it when my HD2 pocket dials her. If you can make it compatible with HTC I'll be all over it! Nice job!
Interesting stuff! I'll be updating this. As soon as it's HTC compatible, I'll be testing it
Very interesting.
Hoping to see an HTC enabled version soon
how much ram does it take?

HELP! Can't answer phone while locked, wont unlock till caller hangs up

Sometimes when my phone rings I can't get it out of lock to answer the phone. When the caller hangs up only then I can answer. This is intermitant. I don't know what to do.
Running the stock ROM, and rooted with unrevoked.

What ROM are you running? Rooted or not rooted? These are things you should remember to post when you're having issues. Makes diagnostics much easier
All I have done was root it. I didn't install any rom or anything. I only rooted it to get the wifi tethering.
So screen turns on, but you are not able to press "answer" when a call is incoming?
Its telling you to hang up on stock rom and go custom. Plus you have better support specially being in this community.

I'm inclined to agree. Custom ROMs definitely go waaaaay above and beyond the stock one. I use a combination of MyBackup Root and Titanium Backup free for contacts/messages and apps, respectively. Once you go custom, you never go back
What I was trying to say is that the screen is locked when the phone rings and then when I go to answer the phone it will not unlock until the phone stops ringing. But like I said in the first post this doesn't happen all the time. I would say about 25% of the time it does this. Sooo... Thats what I was trying to say.
Are you using Google Voice?
Are you using Google Voice to direct your calls? I have 3 phones that GV directs my calls to, and I've noticed that sometimes that causes one or the other of the phones to ring "late". Sometimes the Inc, sometimes not. I don't notice an issue when someone calls my direct line to any of the phones.
I am wondering what you would get if you use an app like No Lock that disables the lock screen.
I started using it when I had a roms lock screen fighting with a launcher's lock screen. I would get stacked lock screens, but only sometimes.
Running without a lock screen is not for everyone, so think about how you use your phone before disabling this great security feature. For me, my phone never leaves my side, and I mean NEVER. And if a "friend" starts poking at my phone I start poking in their face or purse... They learn after awhile.

Assuming screen is off when it cannot be unlocked - but...
Are you running SetCPU w/ a low screen off profile?

Good call, I do remember when I was revving CPU way down with screen off. When it had been off for ~1-2 hours it'd be sluggish and take a bit for the CPU to rev back up. Never used it that long though because the Kernel I'm using now does this and using setCPU just chews up battery.

Well, there's something to try then - if the kernel is making the device slow to wake, use SetCPU to bump up the screen off profile and see if the issue persists.
Couple folk note just this issue in the kernel threads.
This is a known problem I struggle with myself. You may find that you can stroke up to deny the call but not unlock. It seems that this is some kind of grounding problem. Hearing that I tried setting the phone down and swiping while I wasn't touching it otherwise with some success. I've heard a quick cycle of the power button followed by an immediate swipe down can work. Some report pressing the screen firmly before swiping works. I usually just swipe up, call back and say "sorry about that, what's up?" After all, most people are used to drops and stuff because of Iphones.
I periodically goog "incredible can't answer" looking for the golden bullet.

2.2 annoyances

I know, I know, I get Flash, better response, longer battery life....but there are some things I miss from 2.1
-Slide to unlock
I just can't find a way to disable this in 2.2. Now if I have pattern to unlock, I have to slide, then enter the pattern
-Using volume slider to change ring volume
In 2.1 the volume slider went from audible to vibrate, then onto silent (no vibrate)
This is no longer an option in 2.2
Any thing annoy you about 2.2?
I hate that they removed the Flip to Silent feature...
I hate that as the days go both my cellular and wifi continue to have more and more issues........its a major downhill battle. Me thinks something is seriously fubared with the radios now. I've put 2 other defys on 2.1 right next to it while its saying emergency use only, and they both connect 3g with full reception.....
Wow! I've never experienced that while on the leaked build...
However, I forgot to mention that the touchscreen sensitivity seems messed up...
Why doesn't Android have calibration like the one on Nokia phones. Not needed?

Thanks for that, installed and working great
I've also noticed the picture gallery is a lot more sluggish than 2.1
Things that I noticed, but went away with factory reset: Battery got worse. System freezes at least once a day, and needed a reboot. Camera lag along with new gallery (as noted above). All sounds when using headphones has very annoying hiss while playing either video or music. I put up with it for two days, and then reluctantly did a factory reset (reluctant because I had it set up just the way I wanted, and really didn't want to do it all over again especially downloading all the apps), BUT after doing so all issues went away. Excellent battery life (even better than 2.1). No more freezes (in fact it is much smoother than 2.1). No lag in camera or gallery. Hiss in headphones went away.
Things that still are annoying me: No flip to silence. No default slide dis-abler. No more sound enhancer (unless it's moved, and I can't find it). If I have launchers from the Market installed I have NO choice to pick the default Blur one.
Overall I'm very happy with it. I lost root but was able to get it back. On 2.1 my highest Quadrant score was 1483. On 2.2.1 my highest so far is 1718.

Because Firefly is the most annoying app on the whole phone! I don't know how many times I've launched it by accident!
and...
Although I like Firefly, I have experienced pulling out the phone to find a nearly dead battery, and looking at battery usage, somehow Firefly had gotten activated unkowingly. Forget my fingers accidentally pushing that button, I am bummed that my pocket can "butt firefly" on its own.

I couldn't be more agreed with you guys.
It happened to me extremely often to find out that my battery is dead because of firefly.
Fortunately sometimes my phone gets uncomfortable warm in my pocket, before it's switches of...
Makes me wonder if there is some case that (even with some minor modification ) might alleviate this issue. I had not planned on using one, but if others notice this issue, they may be talking up the problem/solution in case reviews.

The issue is that the phone does not check if it is in your pocket before it starts up the camera or firefly.
Even if it doesn't, for example if it doesn't want to waste time and loads the app anyway, it should check the proximity sensor and/or camera readings to find out if its in the pocket.
I don't think it's extremely difficult, but it would manage to avoid draining the battery, and make many people happy.
Having removed the stock apps and installed the google camera is there any way i can remap the button to load the google camera instead?
Is there any way to disable the camera button while the phone is locked though (without rooting it)? It seems like the weirdest, most obvious oversight.... I launch the camera inadvertently literally every time I pick the damn thing up!
Thanks
i am on 3.5.0 with root and use device control to disable firefly and also installed xposed with xposed additions module.
with that you can disable the camera button or you can reassign it to another function/task.
i assigned it to open recent applications on normal click and home with doubleclick.
the afp will not turn on from camera or home press if the sensor in the front upper right thinks the phone is in your pocket. you can try this by covering the corner with your thumb while the screen is off and pressing either button. the screen may flash on for a moment then immediately shutting off again.
the sensorbis insanely sensitive. ive found that putting the phone in my pockets screen towards me and home button up results in very few butt fireflies. the power button will still activate the screen, but i rarely butt power [mostly i butt home].
any case that blocks this corner with a flap should help as well
Another option for the camera. If you're unwilling or unable to root the phone, the stock Amazon leather case will prevent accidental camera button presses.
