[Q] Issues with widgets after rebooting or mounting as disk drive - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I reboot the phone, all of my home page widgets are reset and I have to reload them. This is also happenning after I unount the phone after mounting it as a disk drive. What's also wierd is that some of my preferences, like launcherpro or swiftkey, have to be reset after rebooting or unmounting also. Swiftkey specifically is wierd, because I can't just hold a text box and change the imput settings, I have to relaod the app, and go through the process from scratch.
I've been loading a bunch of roms lately, and I originally thought it was a rom issue, but its happenning on any rom I load (and I always do a full wipe before loading a rom). Is there something on the sdcard that I should clear?
It's hugely frustrating - any help would be appreciated.

anyone? Bueller?

Are you running FroYo with the widgets installed to the SDCard?

Move all the widgets to the phone off of the SD card for smoother performance and less hassle. You might benefit from a faster microSDHC card other than the Class 2 card that came with the phone. I am purchasing a 16GB Class 10 card for 90 dollars but a Class 6 card will be leaps and bounds faster than your Class 2 card.

Thanks guys - that was exactly it. I moved the problem widgets to the phone from the sdcard, set them all up again, rebooted, and everything was still there!
Thanks again!

[Q] Sense Refreshing on SD Mount

This just started happening today. I plug in the phone to my XP computer and when the SD card mounts the HTC Sense home page refreshes. Anyone else experiencing this or know of a way to stop it?
And, yes I know about Launcher Pro and ADW (I actually love Launcher Pro Plus but I am waiting till all Fede's widgest are done before switching), so I was just looking for how to fix Sense not switch to a new home.
My phone does the same but I think it's because some of my apps are on the microSD card.
So 2.2 made apps on SD possible and then HTC screwed it up by making your entire home screen refresh due to this?
Great job HTC!

What's the big deal exactly? You have to unmount from a computer to have it do this, and 9 times out of 10 you don't need to use the homescreen in the following 10 seconds. It's handy, since it makes sure you don't get stuck with random shortcuts not having the proper icons. I'm sure HTC will make it better in the future, but I don't see how its really a problem. It doesn't mess anything up, nor does it hinder anything. You got AppstoSD, just be happy.

Never cared about Apps2SD. I don't have enough apps to require it be moved, and the size of the internal memory is plenty. This happens when I mount the disk and unmount the disk, and it is a big deal having to wait for every screen to reload. Bookmarks, Twitter, Agenda, clock, weather, widgets, everything has to reload, and it doesn't reload until I go to the page. This means that even if I put it down after disconnecting, I am still forced to wait while I look at my agenda or bookmarks. VERY annoying.
And after checking, I only have one app on the SD card, so it can't be that.

Unplayable media files

I'm having a sporadic but frequent problem with my Epic, wherein media files (on the SD card) suddenly become unplayable. Specifically, podcasts in Dogg Catcher, and audio books in MortPlayer, Ambling Book Player, and Audible will suddenly stop working and the app will report some sort of error such as "media file not playable" or some such.
This happens approximately once per day at unpredictable times, and my original response was to reboot the phone, which did fix the problem temporarily. Now I've discovered that unmounting the SD card, then remounting it and allowing the Android media scanner to complete will also temporarily fix the problem. In either case, however, the problem returns within a day or two, maximum.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem, or have any advice on how I might go about fixing them?
(FYI, my phone is rooted and I am running Syndicate Frozen 1.1 ROM, but this problem was happening before the root procedure back when I was running stock, and persists even after moving to Syndicate.)
Thanks!
Just taking a shot in the dark here, but it sounds like the problem might be with your sd card... a possible solution might be to copy all of your data off of the card, reformat it, and then copy you data back on to the card, OR try/get a different sdcard altogether.
Again, not claiming I know what the root problem is, but the reformat is worth a try as it has seemed to help with other sd card reading issues for others.

Thanks, I'll backup my SD card and reformat it to see if that helps. I should know within a day or two anyway.
I'm having a similar issue where all my media files disappear and it says "no SD card detected". If i pop the card out and back in it works, but it's annoying.
FWIW this is a replacement SanDisk card (class 4), my first one was lost in a drunken phone drop at the bar.
I have this exact same issue... Never had issues when stock, but since rooting and flashing ACS101 through ACS110... Although it sounds like it's not related to this since you've had issues longer.
I've tried clearing dalvik cache, normal cache, and messing around with the DRM service, but it's still unstable and audio/video files quit working after random amounts of time.
Let me know if the SDCard fix works for you.
My wife's phone has the same problem. Completely stock, with the official FroYo update. No root or anything so far. Her phone also has an issue where it pauses for up to 30 seconds before actually dialing when a call is attempted, then often fails to actually complete the call. I think she might just have a lemon...

Ordering of apps in drawer keep messing up

After some reboots, I noticed that my apps in the app drawer keep messing up.
Not sure what's the caused, and get fedup of having to rearrange it often.
Any idea?
yer i had that issue for the first 1 and 1/2 weeks of use but i found that after installing a few more apps then it shipped with it stopped after about 9 apps
I think some people have said that having the apps moved to the SD card can make the ordering mess up, since they're loaded later than internal apps
It's really irritating, as it seems to occur randomly
I had this problem too, and the easiest way to fix the problem is just set the order to most used, and not "own order" that way u can get to the app's u use most often on the first screen and they don't move around.
It got so bad with mine moving around that at one point I had about 10 screens, some with no or 1 app on each, setting it to "most used" solved it and I haven't had a problem since.
Hope this helps

just to add, if you use another home launcher besides the stock one, this disarrangement or whatever you call it, happens most of the time. So I prefer to use the stock SE home launcher and sort it by "most recently used" as well.
I've noticed that sometimes opening the app tray/drawer before everything's loaded from the sd card (in case of apps moved to sd) can cause their icons to not show in the 'remembered' location and will appear on the last page instead. Solutions is to just give it a little time to fully load everything after a boot.
Edit: also seems to happen if the sd card is connected to the pc in msc mode, i.e. inaccessible and unmounted from the system.

This also happens to me sometimes, you can still access the apps but it's just annoying that it looks broken.. This only happens to my apps that I moved from the internal memory to my phone memory (I do this to save space on my 2GB internal memory - more space for messages and emails).
IMO, if you move an app, and you put it in the homescreen as a shortcut, the next time you boot, when the system rebuilds the apps' information, it does not include the apps that were moved to the SD card.
What I do is remove them then just add them back to the folders, I used to do this after a second reboot, usually a second reboot does restore everything, but now I'd rather fix 1 or 2 apps, than rebooting everytime to let the phone correct itself...

Hmmm an annoying oversight by HTC then...
It's not the worse thing in the world, just a minor nuisance.. Thanks for the tip anyways

[Q] apps on sd card = icon issue?

Moved a few apps to the SD card and am having icon issues with the apps on the SD card. Sometimes they show up like they are supposed to, but, more often than not I get a generic grayed out icon of an SD card. Still shows the right name of the app and apps seem to operate fine, just annoying and looks bad. Anyone else experience this? I'm running 100% stock.
Thanks

Yes I have that issue too. At first it just stayed like that indefinitely, but lately all the icons re-appear within a minute or so after booting up my Note. Not sure what happenned to cause the icons to now re-appear after a short wait. Anyone else have this problem, or better yet, an explanation or fix? I'm on CivZ 3.4 rom with his 2.0 kernel.
This is happening to me too every now and then. Random times to random apps that are on the sd card

same here.
i found this issue this morning, i was shock all of my shortcut not able to work and the icon is Grey.
but, after a few minutes it back to normal again, but when i tried reboot..it'll happen again and you must wait a few minutes until the icon back (for the function, i found LINE and Line I Love Coffee didn't work first time after ON or Reboot, not trying another program)
what about change the launcher? it'll fix the issue?
I just deleted the icons from the home page and brought it back onto the home screen.

ok not sure if this helps but here goes... I have this issue too, but all the grey icons re-appear as normal within 2 minutes after a reboot. When CivZ releases a new rom version I download and install it. When I boot with the new rom the icons are grey but DO NOT re-appear, ever.
I also have Foldermount installed by the way. After upgrading the rom from recovery and then booting, the first time I open Foldermount I get an error message about a faulty module. When Foldermount offers to fix it for me I click "yes" and reboot. Now the icons are still grey but DO re-appear within 2 minutes after each reboot.
Seen this behaviour consistently over the last few rom updates. For those whose grey icons always stay grey and never re-appear, it might be worth a shot to install Foldermount from the play store and run it. See if you get a message about a faulty module and if so, have the app fix it, then reboot and see if your icons re-appear after a few minutes. I might be way off here but maybe it will help us get closer to a real solution. If you try this please report your findings. Also, remember to make a nandroid backup first, just in case .

I'm having the exact same issue on my Galaxy S4 on the apps I moved to SD. Some appear normal and others are grey. I can still access all of them. Very annoying. On 4.2, the SD card would take a min to load and the apps would appear as normal. On 4.3 not all reappear.

I migrated from a DROID to a Note II just now to a Note 3 - So, I have run all of the Android Releases from Frodo to Jelly Bean and have KitKat on my tablet. My Note II and my Note 3 both have the same Jelly Bean 4.3 and are both waiting for Verizon to upgrade to KitKat 4.4.2
I never had any problems running my Apps on the SD Card on the Note II, Jelly Bean 4.3
The Note 3 changes my Icons to Grayed Out SD Icons. The programs work perfectly on the SD Card. To get my Icons back, I had to move the App back to the device, uninstall it and then reinstall it. (Yes, I did try moving a program back to the SD and get the same grayed out result. Moved back, un-installed, installed.)
This is obviously a common bug that has recently been introduced. My solution? Avoid SD at all cost until Android sorts this out.
Since my Note 3 has 32GB on Device, I was moving Apps to SD out of habit from the old device days. Hopefully there will be a fix for this before I run out of Device Memory.

You don't have to reinstall.
Remove from the screen and put it back if from Apps - that should do it.

Thanks! The work around is annoying, but I only have to do it once for each migrated App.
I can live with that.
Thanks
The problem is from using a slow SD card, and quickly going from lock screen after reboot.
I have a 633x SD card, and only found one app that does not like being moved to SD, and it was a paid game.

I've had a couple that seemed to respond badly to being moved to my SD Card. Put them back and all is well.
This happened on my original Samsung Note. Applications on the SD card would show generic grey icons for a few minutes after a reboot. I found that it also did this when I unmounted the SD card and then mounted it again. I attributed this to perhaps the OS taking a bit of time to read the files on the SD card. I found that the larger the card, the longer the icons stayed grey.

The problem of Apps not showing proper icons, when moved to SD card can be solved as follows:
I have a Note 8 with a Samsung 256 GB SD Card.
When I move eligible apps to the SD card, the icons show up as greyed out, with the annotation "SD".
Eligible Apps are those that, when using the App: "Move Apps" and selecting "MOVABLE", do NOT move the ones that show the warning that the app listens to the "boot completed" event, in which case it is adviseable to keep it in the phone memory. All other moveable apps can be moved.
To get the proper icon display again proceed as follows:
1. Go to Settings/Device maintenance/Storage
2. Click on the "3 dots" at the upper right of the screen
3. Select: Storage settings
4. Select "SD card", then click on "UNMOUNT"
5. Wait a few minutes until the SD card is unmounted. A message will show it to be finished.
6. When the SD card is unmounted: Select and click on: "Mount SD card" and wait a small time.
7. When the SD card is mounted again, all the apps should show up again in the app dra
wer(s), with their proper icons.
8. Copy missing icons on the Home screen from the corresponding app icons in the app drawer.
9. If it does not work properly, repeat steps: 1 through 8.
Good luck, for me this worked fine every time.....
