How can I tell if my phone is rooted or not cause I've done all the rooting on xda and I get to clockwork recovery everytime...I got that superuser app in my app tray as well but none of the root apps will recognize me as rooted so I can't tell if I'm rooted or not
~ SykosouL~ d-_-b
you can open the app called terminal and type su if it lets you then you are rooted .
Ok I did # su and pushed enter and it just went to this # so is that good?

sounds like you have root to me , maybe try reinstall your super user app
You're rooted but remember not all apps that utilize root are compatible with the slide and android 2.1.

yes you have superuser permissions if it went to the #
So what now? Lol! I can't figure out how to get back into recovery to flash anything.....man the G1 was so simple...this is making me feel retarded
~ SykosouL~ d-_-b
Have you flashed the engineering build? What I did was make a nandroid backup the first time I got into clockword (learned my lessons the hard way in the first days of the G1), then flashed eng build, then restored my nandroid backup, then flashed new radio. This gave me stock with root and rom manager ability. A few days (and several roms) later i settled on SlideMeRoot5r1 but as you know that's all personal preference.

This is weird I rooted my phone but was waiting to see what rom I wanted on it. I just looked and I dont have the terminal in my menu. Does it come with the phone? How do I get it back? I still have the superuser

Im planning on rooting the Slide tomorrow and was wondering if I could keep the Stock rom and just install SU to have a rooted stock rom? does anyone know if this is possible? and does anyone have a flashable zip with Su and goodies in it?

when u do root u do keep the stock rom. its not like the g1 where u had to flash a rom. on our phone u don't have too.

There are a couple custom roms that are basically the stock rom rooted, and maybe just s few extras.
Hey I tried CR's new OTA rom but I can't seem to delete any apks from /system/app. Makes me feel like im not rooted
Did you try doing it from recovery or when the phone was booted? I've always done it in recovery, mounting the system partition, and then launched adb shell.

Yup I just learned I had to do that last night, if I could ask though, Why? Its not like this on Droid, Eris, or Nexus that I've used in the past. Is it some sort of Lock HTC has put in?

That's a good question and I don't know if any of us has a definite answer, if we did I'm sure some one wuold have figured out how to bypass it (not the overlay method). It's just how HTC or T Mobile set it up *sigh*
For now we have to do all system writes via recovery
This is what has kept me from rooting. I loved having the freedom with my G1 to do what ever I wanted when I rooted but its almost like even after rooting the slide your still not really rooted. You can get SU but if you try to delete a system app from the terminal emulator you cant. Once we have true root status I'll probably root.
I am pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that we still dont have a "true root". The /system folder is set to read-only or something along those lines when not in Recovery.

Yeah, it's one major thing I hate, would be nice to have rw access on /system while booted - without creating sym. links or doing an overlay. Damn you NAND!!!
Attempting to root my G2 following this method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928160
I installed Terminal Emulator and it keeps force closing, so I found another one called Android Terminal Emulator on the market and installed that. It opens up and I see the following line:
export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH
$ $
I have an active cursor but guide did not mention that I'd see this or that one of the Terminal Emulators would keep force closing on me. I'd post this in the original thread but I'm not allowed apparently. Any help would be appreciated!
After your temp rooted with Visionary, you open terminal emulator and type "su" without the quotes. That will cause a superuser popup that you need to accept and then you should see a # sign and then you can continue with the rooting process.
Awesomeness.. thank you. Just wanted to be sure I was doing everything right! I think I was successful. I don't own a brick and when I booted into Recovery it says S-OFF. I have yet to flash a ROM. Can I get rid of Visionary at this point?

Stock GB, S-OFF, 4EXT Recovery, SU installed and I still don't have root access. No matter which app with root access I try (AdFree for example) SU won't ask me for root and app failed to gain it. How to fix this?
why don't you just flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200261&highlight=stock+gb

There is an issue with SU lately that is if you just updated SU. Try to flash an old SU zip.

I reflashed older one, it's working now. But how can I update it through market? It shows I have latest version.
You don't really need to be updating it via the market. All it is is a gateway for your applications to root access. It's a list of what is and is not allowed.

But I want latest version. Not having it is making me very nervous.
See a therapist.
Seriously though, I had no issues updating su with the market version. See the permissions of su binary after the process is complete. You might want to chmod 755 it..
Tell me how it goes.

Hmm..to precise, it doesn't root the stock ROM, but replaces it with a rooted ROM made by teppic. There may be other additions.. It's just as easy to root a ruu if you're s off.
Oh btw, Terepin, you have to modify init.rc to make an unprotected boot..

Please know in advance I've read top to bottom and through page after page of post and guide here and on other site before rooting, and I searched before posting this question...
-I rooted my Dinc using Unrevoked3, just this past Saturday.
-I successfully installed Titanium Backup and successfully have used it for back-up.
-I UNsuccessfully did an install of Root Explorer. They told me it sounds like I'm likely not rooted.
-I downloaded ConnectBot, typed Su in the cmd line and received a "Permission denied".
Unrevoked3 and the use of Titanium Backup tell me I am rooted. Root Explorer not getting permission and cmd command tell me I'm not.
Should I simply run the Unrevoked3 process again?
My end goal is to flash a custom rom ideally with better battery life, a better bluetooth (my stock set-up stinks on bt devices) and a different look like CM7.
Here is my software info it if matters:
Android Version 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.07.28
Kernal Version 2.6.32.17-g9a2fc16
Software 3.26.605.1
I thought I read and re-read and search extensively, much appreciate any help!!

Sounds like you don't have superuser installed. If you do try uninstalling it and download it off the market.

Even if you have it installed, search Superuser in the Market, download/install. Then open the Superuser app itself, hit Menu - Preferences, then scroll down to Su binary vX.Y.Z (X Y Z will be numbers). Touch it and update the su binary, hopefully that'll let you as it'll ask you to "Allow" root access.
I did the update and it failed, twice I'll try the remove and reinstall method next. Thx for the advice.

So Superuser won't even allow for a removal. It was "remove updates", "clear data" or "force stop" only.

I actually remember running into this on my brothers phone a while back. I think I installed busy box off the market and it solved that problem. Not sure if that would work but worth a shot.

Very true, I had a similar issue once trying to uninstall apps, they'd always reappear after reboot. Needed busybox installed which fixed it.
EDIT: Instead of trying to unistall it, go to the Superuser site here, and there's a 3.0.6 flashable zip file that you can flash in ClockworkMod Recovery, maybe give that a try...? But install busybox too as mentioned above by jackbtha1.
Huge thanks for the advice. I installed Busybox and it fixed the problem immediately after I rebooted. I didn't know it was needed because Superuser, in the binary update logged that it had success with busybox, yet I'd never installed it. Alls well, thanks! Odd that Titanium was working on it's own without permissions.
NOW... if anyone wants to hold my hand through flashing a ROM on this thing. It seems many of the walk-thru guides are a year old or the updated process is scattered.
Before you install any roms make a stock backup so you have something to fall back on.

The reason TiB worked was it uses a modified busybox within the app itself, so that's why it worked okay.

Glad to hear everything worked out for you. Now as far as flashing a custom Rom do some research first and make sure you make a back up before flashing anything.
I recently aquired a mytouch slide 3g from a freiend, I wouldn't call my self a noob but I need some help. On almost any guide I try I seem to have troubles I haven't been able to push anyfiles through adb the main problems I keep having are my adb server is "out of date" and has to be killed every command half the the the server can't restart and also on some files I try to push its says it can't because the system is read only. Any advice would be gladly welcomed. Of and I'm on the 2.2 update

I had the 2.2 update on my phone when I got it. It was a real pain to get root, I used the guide at theunlocker. I still don't have s-off though and cannot adb push files to system. I have to make all mods to rom and then flash it.
