Can someone explain this?
http://shop.sprint.com/en/stores/popups/4G_coverage_popup.shtml
I just ordered a EVO (2 actually), and I got on the Everything Data plan. Is there still a 5G limit on 3G? How will I know if I hit that? Will I be charged ridiculously when I do? What about that roaming data limit? Will I incur fees if I go over that? Or is it impossible to go over those amounts?
Thanks.
There is no data cap at all using the evo. Tethering and internet used on the phone are both truly unlimited across 4g and 3g. Sprint had stated this on their community forum. Do a google search fort buzz about wireless and then navigate to the evo discussion forum. Sprint talks about it there. Hope that helps.

Oh and as far as data roaming goes, the limit is 300 megs. Not sure about charges after that. On sprint network it is truly unlimited.

I'm using beyondpod which does all it's Podcast updates OTA.
My first month was >8GB which showed up as 8GB out of unlimited. No problems.
Intersting link in OP. But it's BS. I have no 4G, and I used wifi tether in June of over 20GBs. My bill didn't change, I heard nothing from Sprint.

Looking at possible switch to Sprint and the Evo... the lady at Sprint told me that you had to pay 30 extra dollars a month to use the hotspot. Is that still true after rooting and what not? Also any tips, suggestions are welcome, I don't know much about sprint

If you have a rooted phone, you can install wireless tether and tether your phone just like the hotspot, but without the payment to sprint. Your evo would have unlimited 4g data, but I'm sure sprint wouldn't be happy if you start torrenting through their connection.

Cool I figured it would be easy. They told me 4G isnt available here yet so Ill be stuck on 3G anyway. Anything else I should know about sprint or the Evo coming from the Hero?
EVO has unlimited data, period, so long as your roaming data usage does not exceed your non-roaming data usage. Also, please don't start racking up data just for the hell of it. Sprint's CEO has hinted that because some people are being greedy, they might do away with unlimited data, or just charge more for it (in addition to the $10 fee).
I have a rooted evo 4g. For tethering I use pdanet and wireless tether. I use these applications quite a bit and was worried that sprint might terminate my service or something for excessive data usage (As we all know the data plans are not absolutely unlimited according to sprints terms of service). When I have checked the data usage on my bill, it would range from about 1-4gb. What confuses me is that i know i have downloaded at least 10-20gb while tethering during these billing cycles. Does anyone have any insight to this? Most of the downloads were using the 4g network, and a little on the 3g. Why wouldn't my bill show that I had in fact used 10-20gb of data?
Well, because the majority of your downloading was via 4g, they don't track that.
Oh... Well alrighty then. Makes sense. Thanks.

That's the whole point of pdanet, sprint doesnt see it as tethering data, just regular 3g/4g data.
It looks like they don't see any kind of data usage.

So I was having some issues with calls dropping so I decided to give good ol Tmobile customer service a call...I've had my G1 data plan since way back, and she told me that since I did not have a 4G data plan I would not be getting 4G speeds. Anyone else hear about this?

They said a similar thing to me as well. When I tried to get my free G2 with the $20 dollar preferred android plan (I came from a $30 G1 plan), a rude representative told me if I wanted the $20 plan, I wouldn't be getting 4g speed since "It doesn't work together..."
Needless to say, I told her I would call back to another representative and get exactly what I want. And I did.
That's pretty lame....so basically are they telling me that I will never reach "4G" speeds if I don't change my plan?

They're wrong. You don't have to pay extra for 4g on T-Mobile.

This. All of their current data plans are "3G/4G". I started my plan in January this is the only option. I'm pretty sure they can't distinguish between sending you UMTS/HSDPA and HSPA+ bandwidth if your device is capable of it.
Its like, I have a G2, if I had a Nexus S (which doesn't have HSPA+), they wouldn't charge me a cheaper plan...
You can get 4g. Like I said, I just called again and a new representative gave me everything I asked for and apologized.
Yeah; I'm still on my G1 plan, and at work (fairly close to a cell tower) I regularly get 18mbit downstream speeds on speed tests.
So i got a T-Mobile version SII (the phone has the T-Mobile Logo on it, and so does the box.). I signed up for the value plan w/ 2GB unlimited data (4G speeds until 2GBs, then it drops to 2G speeds)
I just did a speedtest, disabled my wifi, enabled my mobile data) and tried my speed and the highest i can get is about 4 kB/s. this is definitely not 4G speed. I contacted T-Mobile support, and they were no help to me, they just said that the phone connects to 4G automatically. So then i thought it might be my location, but upon checking my coverage I'm in the "excellent" area.
I think it might be my settings, but I have no idea now. Dont know if this makes a difference but speedtest reports I'm using "EDGE" network... wifi works nicely w/ about 15 Mbps speed
Interestingly, when i have 2G enabled, my download speeds are barely higher (4.7 kB/s --> 14.7 kB/s (2G is enabled))
Here are my settings:
Data Enabled (Check)
Data Roaming (uncheck)
National Data Roaming (uncheck)
Network Mode (GSM (selected) // LTE/GSM (unselected))
Access Point Names:
(Options: Simple / Straight-Talk Mobile / T-Mobile US (T-Mo selected)
Network Operator / Available Networks: (AT&T, T-Mobile)
I am running CM9.1 on my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy SII, SGH-T989 (rooted)
Plan: Value Plan with Unlimited Data w/ 2GB cap for high speed.
EDIT: actually i dont think i can get 4G on this plan... anyone else with this plan?
I'm on the monthly 4g plan for tmobile. $60 plan with unlimited everything 2gb at 5g speeds. I get great speeds. Now if you used up those 2gigs of 4g, left data on while a data hogging app was running, could suffice to where your data went. Once that 2gb is done, your knocked to edge. Log into your account via WWW.T-Mobile.com and click "my account" and turn off WiFi and select yes. It will tell u how much data that's been used.

Try changing this: Network Mode (GSM (selected) to AUTO.
:good:
@nellycruzz i just switched from Sprint at the end of august. and I've use about 15 MBs so far, so that is definitely not the reason.
@premiatul nope. dont see the auto option. just GSM and LTE/GSM.
EDIT: just tried what LTE/GSM would do, and it seems like it gave me a little more speed increase, now at 114 kB/s, the network was Cell...
tried the GSM option again, and i got 235 kB/s with the network being HSPA.
The time is 11 PM PDT

i actually chatted with a tmobile rep today. They basically told me that the phone connects to the network automatically, and after 2GB's the speeds drop to 2G. I'll try again tomorrow though
Well i guess you opted for the $10/month for 2gb over true unlimited for $20?

OMG seriously? There isnt any app that would use THAT much data by itself.

You should of gotten the new promotional plan yesterday only. For 30, you get unlimited now without throttle. Only thing though, no more free hotspot with that. Which i didnt care. I dont use hotspot. I switched over to the new one sep 5th only

Um it's not September 5th only I hope you know? That was just the release date for the new data plan.

i thought about the 4G unlimited, but I'm usually connected to wifi (unless of course I'm driving)...
So is it the CM ROM then... is there anyway i can fix this?

I've seen people say this, but I am pretty sure the terms and conditions for the old plans did not include tethering as Tmobile still had a separate fee for this. You got around this by not using Chrome on the tethered device.
That being said, shouldn't you still be able to tether the same ways as it wasn't really "allowed" before?
I'm on 4G monthly plan with 2GB cap. My SGII with stock ICS 4.0.4 getting 21Mbit down and 2.6Mbit up on 4G.
So, I think if you have enough signal bars and 4G coverage in your area then something wrong with your phone or ROM.
Just tried at work since I get really good 4g coverage here. I pulled in 20443kbps down and 2358kbps up. So, if you're getting old-school dialup speeds, you are either throttled, or you don't have 3g coverage.
think i figured it out. just had to enable WiMax in my notification drawer . not getting great speeds like the others I've seen, but i got about 1 Mbps...and my network status is HSPAP:15 which is assume s H+
thanks for the help
Asking this for a buddy of mine, I'm a T-mobile gs2 user and know nothing about the AT&T side.
Been browsing and googling for a couple hours and thought it'll be easier to get a confirmation from XDA members
1. My friend is on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. Will he be able to get LTE with this plan? I read that he needs to update the data plan. Is that really necessary?
2. If he only gets 3g what speeds are we talking about? h+ speeds?
3. Tethering question: I read a couple mixed answers, but usually on t-mobile devices running a custom ROM usually allows us to tether through native hotspot or tethering apps. How is it like on At&t? I read that they blocked most apps and maybe foxfi too? I'm not even sure if the block even applies to his plan because hes on an old grandfathered unlimited plan
TLR; Friend is on old grandfather unlimited plan, can he get LTE? if not does he get H+ speeds? and how does tethering work here?
Yes he will get LTE, with throttling enabled after 5gb a month vs 3gb on a non LTE plan. Tethering is possible if the custom Rom has been hacked or via a third party app, however i recommend targeting very sparingly to avoid detection.

I just ugraded to a new GS3 with a grandfathered unlimited plan. I was told that i could keep my unlimited plan - and did for about 12 hours. Then my data quit working completely. I called and they reset my unlimited plan. A few days later I checked and I had been put on a 5gb plan.
It took multiple calls back and forth to AT&T but I did get my unlimited plan back - for now. I'll have to keep checking to make sure they don't switch me again.

thanks guys, now whats with the threads that says at&t has been blocking all 3rd party tethering apps and stuff like that? Is that only in reference to stock rooted?
I upgraded from a 3G phone a few weeks ago with a grandfathered unlimited plan and although I had to get a new data plan, it has stayed unlimited (and same price) with the new ATT GS3. I called ATT customer service about a week after my phone was activated to verify my data plan and when I asked if they could waive the activation fee, they obliged no questions asked. I get LTE, now that it is available in my area, and my plan is still unlimited. Every tethering app I've tried works, including cwm USB tether and foxfi, but that is not to say they won't/can't notice I'm using it. Tethering apps are blocked in the app store when I look on my phone, but I downloaded them on a PC, put the apk on the phone, and installed that way.
Oh thanks! I understand what the others meant by it being blocked by at&t now. Can't we spoof the play store to another carrier like T-Mobile so it shows the apps? I would test this but I'm not on att nor have a gs3.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
They don't need to detect apps to see if you are tethering.. They can tell from the data on their network.
You will most likely get caught and get a warning. When you tether again after the warning they will force you off unlimited and onto the 5gb plan.

I am grandfathered in as well and I am still on the unlimited plan and still get LTE. I am getting around 40MB/sec download. I have got warned twice by ATT about tethering but they never switched my plan. I tether to my wife's iPad and my Kindle Fire all the time and ATT has not sent me anything in like 6-8 months.
