I have been using 2.1 custom roms for a while now, but have now gone back to the latest stock 1.5
I have to say i am loving the quick typing I can now do on the keyboard. And general quick system responses.
What is causing the lag in 2.1 custom roms? As this is making them unusable for me.
Sent from my HTC Hero using Tapatalk
all 2.1 portings are laggy... damn
The main cause of the lag is Haptic feedback - ie the little vibration with each key press. Turn this off if you can live without it and you will get a much faster response.
The other cause of lag is as it searches for suggested words - have a play with the prediction settings to see if that makes a difference.
I have to say that I am utterly happy with VillainRom 5.4. I started autokiller on moderate settings then I used the overclock widget to force it to run at maximum speed when the screen is on and minimum speed when it is off and it works brilliantly. Full complements to the chef!

I did have a little play with the heptic feedback, but to be honest, i didn't really see much difference. Didn't test the prediction settings, didn't think of that, but if it works on the 1.5 stock rom perfectly, without any tinkerings, it should surly be possible with the 2.1 roms.
anyhow, to be honest, although i dont like the market app on 1.5, everything else is great. So i think I am just going to wait now for the official 2.1. I am tired of rom hopping.

Even if i turned off the haptic feedback the keyboard is just darn slow....
How can it be that the same suggested words in 1.5/1.6 work so much faster...
Its really annoying that typing is this slow on the 2.1 roms, especially looking at the many sms messages is send
or does anyone have a suggestion for another (quick) keyboard that also has word suggestion/correction???
I found the HTC_IME v24 keyboard to be an improvement on previous ones and usable for me, even with haptic on. But then maybe I don't type as quick as others!
you absolutely have to try villainslide. I pretty much came when I used the keyboard

Just curious, was the keyboard the mod version? or was it a clean version?
I have the idea the lag also comes from some of the mods...
i also notice a huge lag when typing on my HTC Hero using VillainRom 5.4, its been like this in 5.2, 5.3 as well. (the only roms ive tested).
Tried turning of the feedback thing, but that didnt help at all.
Quite annoying, can someone try and find a way to fix this ? The rom it self is perfect else.

Its a paid app from the market. I think theres a free one month trial version available though
I bought Smart Keyboard Pro and I noticed a difference you can try it out if you want and if you dont like it you can get a refund within 24hrs of purchase
I don't use htc keyboard anymore. Try shapewriter. It's free. It's impressive... A really really fast way to write... Just a couple of minutes to learn how to use...
Try it from market!
Hi all,
I got my Desire HD about 4 weeks ago, and used it quite a lot, with barely any apps installed. (I never use app killers by the way) Over time i realised it was actually acting quite slow for a phone with it's spec, so i asked Vodafone and they sent me another one.
My new one, that i've had for 2 weeks now is still slow for what i would expect from a phone like this, and i'm not just being fussy either.
My friend has an X10 mini, and was showing me the other day, and i was shocked at how much more responsive and faster it is than my Desire HD, so i looked up lag issues and found xda developers.
I tried enabling USB debugging, checked for the latest update, rebooted etc.. it feels like i'm only getting, what... 25 frames per second at best? usually looks about 20 (in menus) when compared to my friends X10 mini, his looks as if it's easily scrolling up and down the drop down or popup menu with all of your apps in it, at 60 frames, (something above 30 anyway with NO lag whatsoever) and i have yet to flick my menu without seeing some degree of jitter while scrolling. I downloaded the Quadrant Benchmark and found I got 2002 Points, which when looked at in the graph.. there is no way the x10 mini could even scratch the DHD's score... so...
WHY does my phone feel sluggish? Is this normal or should I be concerned?
Thanks

Here is what i did:
- Install ES Task Manager and add the widget and run it often. (Make sure to add the apps to the ignore list that you do not want to close)
- Remove as many widgets as possible from screen
- Install LauncherPro (It speeded things up a hell of alot for me)
- And most importantly, if your SD Card has a lot of stuff on it (Music etc) then delete as much as you can. The less on your SD Card the faster it will be.
I've Tried that...
Hey, before I wrote this, I tried formatting the phone and did a factory reset, the menu STILL lags and jitters quite a bit. Surely this isn't supposed to happen on a fresh version of the phone with NO user junk on there? and I've heard that task kilelrs are bad for the system, usually doing more damage than good.
Do you have anything on the SD Card?
I am not sure about that, the task manager on mine seems to be very good, i have stopped it from closing important apps which need to be open though.
Hmmm
No i don't have much on the SD, olny the files that the phone adds itself, i tried removing all of my user data already, still no sucess.
Try the task manager if you wish. It works perfectly fine for me and i have been using it for months.
OK
I just tried the task manager... made a little difference, but the menus still lag!
Try turning Auto Sync off for a while too... I am unsure why the menus are lagging. Mine seem fine. What menus lag?
The one where you tap the arrow in the bottom left, and all of your apps are on one page lags the worst. sometimes scrolling on the home screen too.
install launcherpro!!! the menu will ALLWAYS be laggy on ****ty HTC Roms..

same here, i`m using stock rom 1.72 flashed via RUU, OP maybe try to back`up your rom and flash a custom rom like revo or leedroid and see how it is...
ok try watchtower
and see how much RAM is used.
try to use another ROM, not sure if your service provider accept it.
i am sure it is a software added by your provider, or some settings needed.
i would go to:
- format the SD card - don't forget to back it up
- full reset my phone
still same problem ..... find a clean ROM and flash it.

That is what I thought too! I think its your provider. Especially when getting new phone from the same provider and the laggs are still there. I would suggest to try another Rom. Clean from such ****ty provider Stuff.

I have 1 month old DHD, no lag so far on ordinary use.
But i notice 1 think that make it lag.
When i browse internet, HSDPA & 3g signal no problem, but when Edge signal, than lag start to happen, some time its hang few second!! & my DHD start heating warm under battery..
Even tho i click usb debug, stil lag.
Only way to make sure its not lag is to use only HSDPA & 3g signal while browse..
I use stock rom, no root.

I didn't make this, I just found it and put it in a flashable zip.
It was in the meXdroid Pre-Ghost Chili ROM, but for some reason not in the latest AIO version. I think it was also in the CM7 nightlies, but I'm not entirely sure.
Anyway, it just makes the webkit browsers(pretty much all browsers except Opera and Firefox) a little smoother, especially when pinch-zooming in.
I tested this working on CM7 nightly 204 and meXdroid Ghost Chili AIO.
It didn't work on MIUI and Sense ROMS. MIUI hanged at boot and Sense crashed the browser. You can try it if you want though.
Download:
http://www.multiupload.com/P4UCPVX4IY
The .zip flashes 2 files:
system/lib/libwebcore.so
system/lib/libwebkitaccel.so
Do you have some benchmarks or something?
Because I don't know if I will flash it if it is a "little smoother"
Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DZnie3u0YI
Dang! That's smoother than Opera! Wish it was working for MIUI though :/
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
It's not smoother than Opera, but it's definitely an improvement.
Zooming out is still a little laggy like normal, and scrolling on large pages(like xda forums expanded view) is still laggy.
I wonder why they removed this from the CM7 nightlys though.
When I first judged the performance, I was basing my observations on the YT video. Now, I'm running CM7 and using the stock browser.
- the stock browser seemed smoother than Dolphin HD, but yes, not as smooth as Opera. Rendering wasn't perfect on Opera 100% of the time though (the google mobile page comes to mind).
- it was definitely smoother than normal, mostly after the page finished loading. When the page was still loading, scrolling was still fairly choppy. But still definitely recommended for those not on Opera.

Definitely some difference on CM7. Stability is noticeably lower though.
Still not at Opera's level =/
Vellamo shows that it's now running close to 60fps instead of 30fps

I use stock browser on meXdroidmod ghost chili AIO. It is buttery smooth. Way better than the video posted above. I really can't imagine it being better cause its that smooth.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
I actually used meXdroidmod AIO in the video. After I flashed gapps(non modded) it broke the theme.
Also, because all browsers on Android use the same webkit engine, I doubt one is smoother than the other. Because of this, this should work on all those browsers(incl. Dolphin HD).
With the exception of Opera Mobile and Firefox though. Those 2 use their own rendering engine.

I haven't noticed any stability issues myself though, but I also rather have a occasional crash than the normal choppy browsing. I always had to use Opera, since the stock browsers were so horribly slow.
Let's hope IceCreamSandwich will be better. The ICS browser will supposedly have full hardware acceleration in the browser.
Also, I just tested this on my sisters' Nexus S, and it worked. Perhaps it works on more devices?

Yeah, it should work for any phone with 2.3.4 and above. The latest CM Nightlies build 220 has a performance option to smooth scrolling in general. Combine with this and its pretty darn smooth. Opera is a great alternative but its rendering can be screwy sometimes. Plus, it always opens pages in overview which drives me nuts, lol! But ICS, we are ALL looking forward to. I was unaware that the browser would have full hardware acceleration. That's awesome! Our devices have a decent GPU and great CPU so we should be set!
Thanks for the mod, it works well on the CM7 nightly build that I'm running

No, it also works on a Nexus S and probably more devices. But I'm not sure if the .zip will work on your device.
If it doesn't, you can just extract the zip and use adb to push "libwebkitaccel.so" and "libwebcore.so" to system/lib/.
Yep it works, snappy. Thanks dude

Hello there!
I've been using my Desire Z for a long time but found the trackpad pretty useless. This is because i found the sensitivity for it pretty low so if i want to scroll down on a page it's taking forever. I also noticed if i scroll using a piece of cloth (like my shirt) the scrolling is alot faster and usable. But it's not that nice using cloth all the time.
My girlfriend has just got an new phone the Samsung Galaxy Y Pro. It also has an optical trackpad which is alot faster and usable. Also in the settings there is an option to make the trackpad faster more sensitive.
Is there any kind of application or modification to make the trackpad faster sensitiver or so?
Please let me now .
Regards
Edit: whoops i forgot to add [Q] in the topics name and i have no idea how to edit this.
Finally a topic regarding this issue!
I noticed that using certain (mostly newer, modded - CM7 for example) ROMs, the trackpad responsivess is great.
However, recently I flashed to modded stock ROM (Virtuous G-Lite) and I also find the trackpad quite useless :/
Been searching the internet for reason or solution, but found nothing
Hope to find the answer!
So if the sensitivity differs in different ROMS it's editable in a file or so. So i think it would be possible for an smart developer to create an app that edit's the values in the file to change the sensitivity with a nice slider as GUI.
Hopes it will be there someday .
I could not agree more about the trackpad, it makes me want the responsiveness of my old G1 with the trackball (but that design is prone to fail because moisture/foreign objects can easily get underneath the ball).
Would love to see some sort of customization for trackpad sensitivity become mainstream for custom roms.
I've experienced the same problem with the following ROMs:
CM 7.1.0 Stable
Virtuous v2.0.0
Virtuous G-Lite 1.6
So it's happening on AOSP and Sense based ROMs.
Just flashed G2-Slim 1.2 (see my sig for link), which seems to be the same AOSP ROM as Virtuous G-lite, but the sensitivity responsiviness seems much better.
I have no idea how the hell can it be different..
Maybe different kernels affect this?
I'm also using the G-slim ROM for a couple of days now and besides I really like the ROM the trackpad is indeed faster. But still not as fast as I would like. Let's hope some dev. Check this thread out an can help us what makes the difference in sensitivity for the trackpad!
I remember before back on android 2.2 when using the trackpad through texts depending on how fast I swiped would determine how many letters or words it would move. But now especially with roms like cm7 no matter what it'll only move over 1 letter =/ a setting to adjust sensitivity in future roms would be amazing

That's exactly my problem! I don't want to move one letter if i like to i want to move 5 letters or scroll (fast) to the beginning with the trackpad. Just like it is on blackberry's or on the Samsung Galaxy Y PRO. My girlfriend get's the galaxy y pro on her birthday (27th of December) it runs gingerbread stock and has got an sensitivity option in the settings. Maybe i can break that functionality and put it in our phones. I don't know if it will work tho because the trackpad maybe differs. Still hoping a developer will look at this thread and help us out!
Hi guys,
So I just thought I'd start a thread of to see what people expect to come to the One X over the next few months and what they would like too.
Obviously there have been rumors about a music streaking service and Sense 4.1. Do you think we could get better performance out of our device, live wallpapers fix etc?
If you have anything against this thread, don't comment. It's pointless, I agree, and has been made solely with the intention of finding put what people want and expect from their device in the up and coming months.

I would also like to see the 3.0 kernel and usb OTG. Would love to hook my HOX up to my dslr. Also, some more optimization of Sense wouldn't be the worst thing as I believe that having lag when scrolling between home screens is unacceptable for such a high end phone.

Most important ones in that order:
- Stable GPS (, especially when cycling slow or just walking)
- Improved battery life
- A way to change volume of all channels, because many apps use a channel (eg. Alarm, Notifications, Media) without giving the opportunity to change the volume of that channel
- better way to remove all default apps I don't use
- change behaviour of the hardware buttons (right button = menu, long press home= recent apps) - I already did this, but default would be nice for non-rooted devices.

+1 here as well. I don't want to root as genuinely don't want to give up my warranty but I am begging for this feature to get rid of that ugly menu onscreen button.
we need the following urgent features in the next update
- 3 Dot menu disable option or switch to hold the home button for menu
- Power options!! this is a must for such processor, Economy, Balanced and Performance mode like it is on the T Prime, needs a widget too! they can put a warning for users to know performance mode will drain more battery and cause higher temps
- Fix the flv video bug in the stock gallery
- Fix the crazy behavior in the stock browser like a better way for the nav bar to come up at will
- Fix applications priorities Sense should never reload during normal use but it should kill it and most background process during heavy games
- They should also include ultra rosie officially for stutter free sense launcher
- If they are generous they can provide multitasking options too since these can be switched on the fly in android!
these will make the HOX the ultimate device and kill the need to root
3 dot
Sort out the multitasking

Personally I would like to see the following:
- HTC Hub more 'personalized' for the Tegra 3, such as free games etc.
- Sense certainly needs speeding up and prioritizing over other applications.
- Charging & Screen issue, when Charging the phone can sometimes become unresponsive.
- Speaker optimization, sometimes when playing Audio it will go quiet on Bass as the speakers equalizer isn't perfect.
- Slightly better battery life, I still don't think it totally uses the Low-Power Core to it's full potential.
As to people banging on about the buttons, have you noticed in some non-Google developed applications the 3-dot menu does not appear? The 3-dot menu can be disabled by the application developer if there is another way to get into the menu. For example on Need For Speed Hot Pursuit the 3-dot menu appears at the side, however hitting Pause will take me to the same menu as the 3-dot menu. This is a developer issue, the menu is enabled on ICS by default, but can be turned off by the developer!
Agree with most of what's been said.
Don't forget Sweep2Wake to save the power button and for those with small hands.
Nope. Not entirely. Although google seems like they want to get rid of physical buttons, it's HTC's decision whether they want to have a 3 dot menu button OR not. This is easily removable and shouldn't take much effort if any at all.
PlayStation mobile game coming soon too, that will be really awesome
