Advise: Flashing to official FroYo ROM and rooting - Desire General

Singapore (Asia) Desire owner, which ROM should I get (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667)? Is it the "RUU_Bravo_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.19.707.7_Radio_32.36.00.2 8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126179_signed.exe"?
And how do I root the official FroYo ROM? My friend did it and he told me to check the forums, but I don't see any thread instructing how to root the official ROM. Advice will be deeply appreciated

It works? Tested?
And so do I use that RUU? Or the .zips listed below?

I need help! I made a goldcard using this guide (http://www.roothtchero.co.uk/goldcard-2), ran the "RUU_Bravo_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.19.707.7_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126179_signed.exe" RUU as administrator, and followed the instructions. But halfway through I got this error:
Error message said:

your bootloader version is wrong.
look for the correct version of the RUU

Okay, my bootloader version is 0.80 so I downloaded the RUU for that (RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed) but I get another error:

Okay I know where I went wrong already. Now I'm on the 1.21.405.2 ROM but I am not getting the FroYo update! Any ideas?

Because it's not out yet?

We all have that problem at the moment

But my friend has gotten it? And I thought it is supposed to be released this couple days?

since when singapore is getting it first?
it's suppose to be released in europe this weekend.

If I'm on the RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2 ROM I won't get the Singapore FroYo ROM right? But I can't flash the RUU_Bravo_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.19.707.7 one, it says wrong bootloader version. LOL.

Update now available! (According to http://htc-desire-get-froyo.u4y.eu/)

You do realise if you update to the "Official Froyo from HTC" you may NEVER be able to root your phone again don't you?

Won't unrevoked's rooting program work?

No, because, if going by the leaked Froyo / Sense roms, these come with a new HBOOT version, which at this time, cannot be rooted by any current methods.
I suggest keeping your phone rooted as it is, and when the official OTA arrives, wait for a dev to have a look at it, removes the HBOOT and roots the ROM.

On that note.
I used to have a Windows Phone (Touch HD) and loved Miri's ROMs as he used all the latest versions of the OS and stock software, with no added extras such as apps/graphics. Is there a ROM developer like that on the Android side?
One thing I dont want is my phone to end up unrootable and be versions behind on the OS because HTC have abandoned us

You can try DeFroST or OpenDesire. They are two of the most popular ROMs around. I was on DeFroST and all was well till 2.5a (didn't like the new notification LED's colors) so I am gonna try OpenDesire now.

unrevoked doesn't root a ROM (does it?), it just helps you apply an already rooted ROM.
Someone will need to root the ROM first.

How do I know if my Desire is rooted?

I bought a handset off another forum a couple of months back and I think it's a fully unbranded handset, and have been trying to run the 2.2 update, except everytime I get to the green sync symbol after it restarts, I then get a red question mark.
I'm running
Firmware 2.1 update1
Build number .1.1.405.2 CL174215 release keys
Software number 1.21.405.2
So is this rooted? Either way, how do I get the Froyo update to work?
Many thanks!

Yeah thats the one your phone is rooted
Ok. That answers the first part I guess then. Any ideas how I get to Froyo? I can download the update, but it always fails to do it's thing.
Do I have to restore the phone or what? And how?
is your phone branded in any way? even a start up logo ?
and where can you download the update? from system software updates on your phone?
There's no branding on the phone, box or software. I can download the update via software updates.
PS. Thanks for the help so far!
If you can download it from software updates go for it froyo here we go,
no branding is a good sign
Just try updating via the update manager as that should work.
LOL
That's the problem. It doesn't work!
Same thing with me....
I bought a Telstra Branded Handset. Had a company root and install a generic rom. (Telstra handset because it works on ATT 3G.) This morning, the phone told me that I had an Android Software Update (Version 2.2). The phone downloaded it, but wouldn't install. I imagine because the dang thing is rooted.
I will wait a few days for someone to offer a desire rom with 2.2 and HTC sense.
Is there an easy way to restore the handset to it's original software so I can upgrade from there?
Look for the Unrooting guide in the (sticky) guides collection. I believe it just involves flashing a stock rom. But currently you won't be able to root your phone after official OTA froyo update, since it flashes your hboot too. Alternatively you can flash a rooted froyo ROM without hboot.
Edit: Look in development forum for the sticky guide. The place to be for topics like this; it makes them obsolete.

It took a bit of time to download all the updates, but I got there in the end.
My Desire is rooted, 2.1, not 2.2 Froyo, I wish. But I am trying to things in the file management like install and move around apk files. But it wont allow saying I have no permissions. Rooted to me means God access, but its not really god access. Any ideas why?

Even if you are rooted, you will have READ ONLY access to /system due to NAND protection. You can only write to /system from recovery.

[Q] Help debranding UK Vodafone Desire after August 3rd Update?

Hi,
I downloaded the most recent update from Vodafone which included the splash screen, added bookmarks and apps, none of which I want.
I want to debrand the phone and have created a gold card but when I try to run the rom program (RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.15.405.4_Radio_32.30.00.28U_4. 05.00.11_release_122704.exe and
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe) I get a "error 140, bootloader error". My phone has hboot 0.80 on it.
Is anyone else having this problem or have a solution to it? It seems like the latest Vodafone update (1.24.161.3) has stopped this method from working.
Latest update, so Froyo 2.2 yes??
if so then your going to have to site tight for a while and keep an eye on the Dev section
also see this for info

No, the latest Vodafone update isn't to 2.2, it's still 2.1.

got vodafone NL, and i want te same things. Just stock HTC froyo and no vodafone bull****
I would just root it as I have detailed here i as the OTA updates people are getting are updating their bootloaders to locked ones and can you really see Vodafone releasing Froyo WITHOUT all this new crap they have added?

hi boy!!!
I estimate that you have specifically android 2.2.1...right?
i hope that your software version is adapted for your carrier.... and is not a WEE ruu... its normal... my DHD by default was been 1.33
u can try via htc sync and click in upgrade button and pray for it to work....
i know that some people was update succesfully his DHD with it...
or try to do it with the XDA style, lol.....(because for downgrade it directly from a official ru downloaded it´s impossible)
1-downgrading...(necessary)
2-rooting...(necessary)
3-install rom manager & CWM recovery (necessary)
4-eng-soff
5-radio s-off
6-cid-111111 (super-cid)
here there is information about it:

Issue upgrading a rooted evo from 2.2 to 2.3

Ok let start by getting a few things out of the way.
1 I'm sorta a Noob ok kick me crack a joke or two I don't care as long as you help
2. I have Htc evo of course running stock 2.2 (baseband ver 2.15.00.11.19)
Kernel ver 2.6.32.17-gee557fd htc-kernel and18-2 #15) (S-ON)
Radio-2.15.00.11.19 and I'm using a Mac (if that help)
3. I rooted it using the unrevoked method.
The device works fine but bit I'm having a big issue trying to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3.
I have been trying to unroot the phone so that I can update OTA.
But no matter how many times I try to unroot it my super user is still there
I would rather flash the phone to a 2.3 GB rom thats 2.3 with sense 2.1 or 3.0.
I've tried this the method found on youtube using the s-on and dropping the image file (zip) on the sd card and flashing it
by making sure you install the (s-on) patch
and re-flashing the RUU (PC36IMG).
but when I did that it said that i was re-flashing a old version.. so I found a newer version.
But when I drop it on my SD card as (PC36IMG.zip) it reads it, checks it then... takes me right back to the Hbot screen like nothing never happen!!!
I've been working on this for 3 days I've even tried restoring and everything.
I've been searching online for answers but I can't find anything that helps either its not up to date or just flat out dont work.
at the end of the day i just want a damn evo running BG 2.3 sense 2.1 or 3.0 would be nice.

oh by the way when i try to run the OTA it reboots startes to load get about 35% then goes to the exclamation mark / triangle.
I'm out of options please help me out! I've searched and read on for about 3 days now.
please either help flash the device to a stable working 2.3 with sense 2.1-3 or un root it so i can update it ota and re root it again...

Wow man, between the general and q&a sections there are seven threads dealing with this very topic. Yet you couldn't find any of them?
If you want to unroot and take the ota you will need to flash the s-on update and run the 3.70 ruu to unroot. Once you do that you'll be completely unrooted and like new. Then just take the update and it should go through without any issues. If, however, your bootloader shows a firmware version higher than 3.70 and you are s-on then I'm sorry to say you are stuck like that.

I've dont that and i still can not remove the root
You'll need to flash the PC36IMG through fastboot to see what's going wrong with it then. To do that download the AutoRoot tools zip and the PC36IMG_3.70.651.1.zip from the link below. Once you have them both unzip the tools folder and place the PC36IMG in it, then run the FlashZip script and tell it to flash the 3.70.651.1 zip
It should flash ok but if not it'll give you an error message saying what went wrong with it. Keep in mind you're going to be completely unrooted if your bootloader shows S-ON.

You do realize that you'll lose root until a new method is found, correct? If you want to stay rooted, you need to reroot, then flash the stock rooted 2.3 rom.
If you want a newer version of Sense, you'll be outta luck there too - the new update is same ol' Sense 1.0.
Just making sure you realize this, since so many people are whining about not being able to root the OTA and being stuck with the uneventful update.

Am i about to kill my HD?

I have a Orange branded DHD, unlocked via IMEI, running 2.3.3, i want to install the HTC rom as i have been told it comes with far less bloatware.
I do want a genuine rom though, rather than a cooked version, so have opted for the HTC rom. I found and downloaded the following file which claims to be what i need.
Am i correct?
RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_HTC_WWE_2.36.405.8_R_Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2_release_187331_signed
Also, as it is a genuine rom, do i still need to do all that "rooting" business?
Or can i go ahead and install/flash?
Thanks for any possible help or tips.

If your phone is allready rooted then, after installing the new Official ROM it will be unrooted again, You can try downgrading to the official 1.3x version and then update from HTC direclty. I dont know if you gonna have any problems
because your phone is branded, but i dont rly think so. Im just a user using roms etc, have no idea for further instructions!
Considering you paid a hefty sum for your Desire HD, i strongly recommend you first find your branded rom somewhere in the dev forum first. Just in case you have to reflash teh stock rom for warranty issues. For the rest, I also recommend downgrading to 1.3x first and then flashing whatever you want (cooked roms need s-offs and root). I have a guide in my sig on how to root, s-off and flash a rom, however, stock roms are executables from what i know so you might not need to follow my guide just plug in your dhd with drivers installed and let the exe do its work. Regarding downgrading, you will find a link in my thread to the "Downgrading to 1.3x thread". Have fun
Edit:
I know of 3 ways to brick your dhd:
1. Partitioning your sd card with clockwork mod recovery 3.0.2.5
2. Editing some esf files or something and mistyping something
3. SMashing your phone into a brick wall repeatedly
So, don't worry so much, it's not a galaxy S
Yes, the file i have is an executable file. I think it is the most recent genuine HTC rom available for this device.
So, that being said, i should not need to root or downgrade etc? Just double click & go?
Surly you should not have to root your device when wanting to install a different, but still genuine rom?
I have found it very difficult to locate stock roms for this device.
Going to have another search now, but if anyone knows a shortcut, i'd be more than gratefull

You will need to downgrade first as your device is branded. Once downgraded just run the RUU and Bobs your mothers brother.
If you have an orange dhd you will need the orange upgrade. I'm pretty sure if you try to use a different one it won't let you do it. I'm not 100‰on this.
I used to get android updates for T-Mobile brand off the T-Mobile website.

@ ghostofcain
And to downgrade is it just a simple rom flash? Or do i need to root or s-off etc first?
I know this would be the case with cooked roms, but i'm only talking about Genuine releases here.
I'm currently running an Orange branded 2.3.3 ROM, so if i simply flash an older rom to the device, then i am all set to flash the newest HTC generic rom to the Desire, right?
That older rom i need to flash first, it would have to be Orange branded too right? Is there any chance you could give me it's exact name or provide a link?
Thanks greatly for the help.

Once you have downgraded you don't need root or s-off to flash the RUU and you don't have to flash an orange branded one. You can flash any updated .exe.
if I have time ill find you a link..
*EDIT*
Also bear in mind if you flash the orange ruu. Or any other branded rom. It will still have all the bloatware you are trying to get rid of.
You must flash a standard HTC one. Go to the HTC website and download the official update from there. You will need to downgrade first though.

That's the problem, the HTC 2.3.3 rom was only ever released OTA, and is not available to download from their website.
Although i think i have managed to find the ".exe" version of that rom.

From what i can tell, this seems to be the newest, Genuine HTC 2.3.3 rom for the Desire HD.
So, i just need to downgrade and then install this right?

Also, when i have this HTC rom loaded on, will i still receive any OTA updates? And would they be HTC branded one's from that point on?

the 1.32 downgrade should be in the link I sent you. I'm not sure about the ota updates. its seriously worth considering doing a full root after you dg and try out some of the fantastic roms some of which are kept as stock but you have more options and root privilages.

You have to downgrade and use a goldcard to de-brand your phone. You cannot flash a standard WWE ROM on a branded phone. After you have completed the steps of de-branding and flashing the latest WWE ROM.... OTA updates may or may not work.
Everything you have asked about is already thoroughly documented elsewhere in the forum and I suggest you go read all the stickies. Do not do anything with your phone that you do not fully understand as you could run into problems.
With Regards to warranty and such-like that people have mentioned, HTC don't really care what you do to the phone software-wise, they might have a problem if you returned it too them in pieces claiming that it just came out of your pocket that way.
Just read everything here and you should be good to go.
Peace.
