Whats the best non sense rom for Desire? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im tired of not being abled to use my wiimote to play emulator games etc.
So im asking what in your opinion is the best Rom for the desire without Sense activated?
1+ for link to the latest version download

IMHO AdamG's OpenDesire 3.0.1 is the best right now until the official FROYO is released.

Cyanogen Mod 6 RC1.

Nope, as a matter of fact when you first install it, it says welcome to Nexus One! I've been using it since he uploaded it and it is awesome, blazing fast and you can OC.

I personally like the Defrost rom by Richardtrip. very fast and clean.
Is IMHO very good with launcherpro. I hear that the cyanogen is bundled with fantastic features, but I dont plan to change from DeFrost until a OCUV comes out for the 2.2 sense

Sounds pretty ****ing awsome .
As i havent rooted my phone before and you seem like a helping guy (no i know where the guide is, i dont need help with that) How does uppdating the root work? do i need to reflash the new image every time a new uppdate comes?

Just download rom manager from the market once you root and it has a feature to check for updates on the rom your using. Does eveything automatic, easy as pie

Try set rom. If I want to leave Sense i'll use it without thinking.

I think I´m gonna ditch Sense. I´m fed up with it´s stupid dialer, the contacts widget and the slopoke SMS app.
Plus it´s kind of laggy. The only thing I like is the weather widget.
Any weather widgets out there? Nice ones I mean.
Thanks
P.S. I quite like the OpenDesire one.

The prettiest weather widget is fancy widget, do a search on here for the APK as its not on the market. It's exactly like the sense one, and opendesire 301 is by far the most complete vanilla android in my opinion

OpenDesire 3.0.2 just went live!

I'm on 3.0.2 now, the best just got better

For the weather buy beautiful weather widget. It's more customizable and even prettier than HTC weather.

Are you using the "Beatiful Widgets"?
A lot of people are complaining about FC since the last update.

The best non-sense ROM is CyanogenMod 6.0.0 RC1 . It has so many functions that make the user experience so much better.

Cyanogen vs DeFrost vs OpenDesire

I wonder if this thread is legal or not XD I would like to see how many responds I will get for this stats =)
We love our Desire(s) and our Desire(s) won't be that great without these souls XD This is not a competition or as such. It is just to see how many people are actually using these custom roms and their favours on them
And this poll is just for CM/DF/OD's users If I have an option "None of them" then people will ask why don't I put other roms as well. The point is: There are so many of them out there and we all know where they come from.

Why? I would like to know the differences.
I have tried defrost and i like the defrost setup and cyanogen settings.
I like the fact that through defrost setup i can change kernel and mv and mhz
as well as tweaking status bar from settings.
Does opendesire and CM offer these things?
defrost is best
This is going to be very biased - everyone has there own opinion.
However, those that vote MUST have used all the ROM's otherwise how do they know that one is better than the other??????
None of the above - LeeDroid w/ brightsilence.
Stock Android = bleugh ugliness.

yup, DeFrost and OpenDesire are based on Cyanogenmod. Cyanogenmod is based on Google Android source, so then it must also be the same as the Android HTC sells? Start thinking people.
I tried Cyanogenmod at first and was very unhappy. Too few Desire users, too few Desire specific modifications, like up to date black theme. It also was full with bloatware (Amazon MP3, ADW Launcher) and I wasn't able to deinstall them with ADB completely. Don't know why. It also had some hick ups and consumed a lot of battery in my opinion, at least became the Desire hotter than usual.
Then I switched over to OpenDesire after I read that it is based on CM, thus also supports Bluetooth HID. Less bloatware, much slimmer and faster because no laggy ADW Launcher. Huge Userbase, with a up to date black theme with the circle battery mod. Overclocking features, etc. Perfect for me. And it runs fine at the moment and everything works as it should.
I haven't tried DeFrost yet, and won't plan to do it. The differences are marginal and to be honest, I don't really know what exactly the differences are. I just preferred OD because it seemed to me as if more users use it and AdamG releases more updates faster. I also decided to use OD because I have heard of it before several times, not so DeFrost.
However, OD and so should DeFrost, are much better than CM for us Desire users. Better optimized and more features for the Desire and much better support.
i tried them all in my search for a stock rom to compare it with my sense one.....and i must say that without saying cyanogen and defrost aren't good, OPENDESIRE is the best....very fast and very stable with customized options that do a lot of things....that's my opinion

[Q] Pros and Cons? Non-sense vs. sense roms

Hi all!
Basically....iv used mainly sense roms...tried a few and im with leedroid at the moment...seems very stable and quick and i like the htc goodies....mainly the htc phone, messaging, music and gallery.
Iv also tried CyanogenMod but i didnt get on with it without the sense goodies.
Is there good alternatives for the htc stuff? or did i not give non-sense android a chance? I'm thinking of doing a full wipe and going to opendesire.
What are the advantages in your opinions between sense and non-sense roms???
Advice much appreciated!

Guess you got your Desire because of Sense, or you could buy a N1
I like HTC stuff, though a UI revamp is likely planned for Gingerbread, so you still shouldn't drop stock Android off yet.

For me the biggest disadvantage to non-sense roms is the lack of a decent T9 dialler (where you press the number buttons to substitute for letters and it filters your contacts). There is the Dialler One app available but it's nowhere near as good as the Sense one.
If the Sense dialler could be put into a vanilla rom then I would probably be happy.
Using Defrost at the moment.

Facebook contact sync is built in to FroYo... I think, if it isn't then it is when you download the Facebook official app.
I havnt tried the facebook app since some updates, but before it didnt work too well
Sense rom = More widgets(htc widgets) , pinchout to select home screens , good dialer.
Non sense rom = More free ram , no htc widgets , no htc sync.
But both of them good with Desire, because Desire is superb

Both are good with battery life. But for my option non sense is a little better.
Like Mshaw03 HTC dialer and selecting text Copy-past on browser. It's really great on sense. But I prefer the froyo lockscreen, the gray status bar other way I prefer the froyo look and feel.
I'm on OpenDesire 4.0.4
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Graphics performance is better with non-Sense ROMs because of newer kernel...
just..try it) play Asphalt 5 on Sense ROM then on Non-Sense ROM like OpenDesire...
WITHOUT OC and smth
I love sense too much for it's keyboard, clock and alarm
And HTC sync
Sense roms have better UI, useful apps, widgets and implements but they work slower (according to Quadrant scores)
Non-sense roms work faster(again, according to Quadrant scores), have a little extended battery life. But they have some important lacks. Gallery 3D works slow imo and there is no alternative. They have very basic UI(Google have to do something about that). There is no copy/paste like HTC's. bla bla..
I love both of them but non-sen roms need some time imo.
I just tried opendesire then defrost....defrost has the cm options which i prefer over opendesire. And it feels so much quicker than sense roms.
Does anyone know if n1 cm themes would work with cm rom for desire...hense then work for defrost since it is cm basically???
I use t-mod, an Australian variant of Leedroid. I really dig it, buy I would get rid of Sense in an instant as it does little but slow down Froyo. The only advantages for me are the Data on/off widget, and the fact that it doesn't have the oj and headphone jack death bug. I love the horizontal caller id slider - the Sense up/down one kept answering or declining in my pocket until I got widget locker, which is a great workaround but you have to slide open widget locket before you get to the caller id screen. As soon as the oj death issue is fixed I will change over, no typing app is accurate enough to do without it imho, and none even have forward delete to make it even slightly tolerable.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Oh, to elaborate, I tried Opendesire, but as I understand it, all non- sense roms have the oj death bug.

Wow! Is it really that much better?? So what exactly do gain or lose with Cyanogen comparing to Sense? I know Cyanogen is a lot cleaner/lighter and therefore faster than Sense; and you get DSP Manager but lose Dolby Mobile and SRS; you'll have ADW/Launcher Pro and of course lose the Sense UI...what else??

I see. In that case, how does a custom Sense ROM + a custom kernel compare to a Cyanogen ROM with the same custom kernel? I guess the later would be quicker due to it's lighter?

Yes, I'd like to understand the differences as well.
Apart form some enthusiastic but not very informative "CM blows Sense to sh1t!" statements, I haven't seen any clear explanation of what the benefits of CM are? If it is simply the removal of Sense then that is a subjective improvement. Coming from a Magic (on CM) I know that many people over there spent their efforts getting Sense to work on that handset. Personally, I like Sense, it is clean and has a number of useful or flashy widgets and with the hardware of the DHD it is smooth and fast. I've rooted my DHD to Leedroid (mainly because I can't stop tinkering) but I'm holding from CM much as i liked it on the Magic because I just can't see the advantages..
Maybe someone could explain them for the more nooby amongst us?
Can you have more/less screens?
Can you organise you apps? Hide them?
Landscape home?
A list would be nice.
Personally, I like HTC Sense because it's clean and has uniformity as a UI. But if I have time spend 80% of my phone/device just customizing the UI again and again rather than using it then I would go for Cyanogen.

Yep. Just tried CM6 and whilst there is nothing wrong with it all, and it is possibly faster than stock, I just can't be ar$ed with tweaking all the settings to get the phone to have a bit of uniformity in its looks and operation.
Sense might be a bit bloated, but you don't need to use it and on the DHD it runs fine.
I think it is more of a aesthetic thing than anything else.

UPDATE
I've just noticed that this thread has been moved from the development section. For those who aren't aware of the significance of this update, it is useful to us Desire owners because it will allow us to use stock, AOSP based Gingerbread ROMs with improved stability, graphics performance and battery life. It will also also give ROM makers more straightforward access to camera hardware.
goodbye bootloops!!
Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) update now rolling out to Nexus S and Nexus One. Be patient, may take a few weeks for OTA to complete.
this is news.
a good news. I can't wait to try it .
Great news, here we,HTC DesirE users can not wait to download via OTA now...
That's some great news, but since I read that HTC (pocketnow.com/android/gingerbread-coming-to-htc-desire-this-spring-or-summer) is waiting for the Desire S to come out first, we Desire users might have to wait quite a while before getting an official update!?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yes, that's true... if you have some sort of love affair with HTC Sense!
I've the new Sense (Froyo build) from RCMixHD on my Desire and have to say... it's okay but man is there a lot of HTC crap running on it!
Since most of us are running Cyanogenmod, Oxygen, etc... it's great news for us! We'll have a nice clean ROM in a matter of weeks (if not days). So I don't see how HTC dragging their feet matters at all. And just so you know, another reason they (HTC) might be slow to upgrade is because the new Desire S and Wildfire S models are coming, and they've changed so little on them that I'm sure they want to give users more (artificial) reasons to update. Thank god for our Rom Chefs!
I'm waiting for Sense personally, stock Android is fugly - even with different launchers. Only one remotely good is the MIUI launcher

Stock Android is ugly? Look at my Signature
In my opinion Sense is more beautiful than stock Android, but at least Gingerbread has a black bar instead of the hideous grey bar in 2.2 and also the icons are a bit nicer. Combine 2.3 with LauncherProPlus and a few other tweaks and it looks good. Altough what I really don't understand is why the stock dialer sucks so much. Unable to call a contact by pressing the first few letters of a name... Phones did that already at the turn of the millennium, maybe even before that. (Yes, I have DialerOne)
Really good news for all of us indeed!! Sense and clean Android followers will have our update, and all (our at least most of it) the issues will be fixed!!
Cheers for that!!

Subjective - personally the fat, dark (but not quite black) borders in Sense apps were something I was glad to see the back of.
In fact the aesthetics of Sense were a major motivation in ditching it (I stopped using the Sense launcher within a couple of days, well before rooting).
It's all a matter of taste - but at least we do have options

Is there anything special I need to do if I wish to take advantage of a new ROM which will be based on 2.3.3 stock but still have the chance to take the HTC OTA update for 2.3 when it becomes available??
Thanks

[Q] CM7 vrs Stock on the DHD

Hey guys,
So I'm getting a little impatient with waiting for Gingerbread on my DHD and was thinking of going to CM7 now that its Final. Previous Custom ROMS so far havn't really done it for me. I kinda like the reliablility and battery life etc of the stock build.
Has anyone tried CM7 on the DHD who could maybe give a little account of how it worked out (battery life etc)?
Thanks

Battery life is superb on CM7 and much better than the Gingerbread Sense ROMs. I take it you have tried the latest Desire S builds? I recommend RCMix if you haven't. If you are wanting the pure Google experience though, you have nothing to fear with CM7.
Regards.
Stock rom offers a better connection between all the social networks, better stock widgets and htc sense camera app. hmmm i did have CM7 for while and i loved it but its just the camera app that did it for me, i guess im just too used to HTC sense !
I had no problems with CM7 either. Very nice rom. Camera App is nice. Audio is great. Having or not having HTC Sense is a big decision maker. Once or if you get bored of Sense, then you will really enjoy a rom like CM7 for all its other differences. If it could have the Sense Weather animations and clock, Touch Input keyboard and HTC Reader 2.0 - it could be my ideal rom at this point.
Although I'm a relative noob with trying the many Android roms.

The clock, albeit not with the flip function, can be found all over the internet. Search for Fancy Widget (Sense Clock) to find it. If you can't and desperately need it, I will pm you the apk upon request, although will have to dig it out first. Keyboard? I'm confused as to exactly what you mean, but you can use the HTC keyboard on CM7 as well as numerous other replacements. HTC Reader??!! No way! Aldiko and Laputa both make HTC's attempt look poor. Not to mention Kindle.
Personally, the slight nuances of pure Android are what I find hard to resist. The transition animations, which were present on the Donut Sense UI but inexplicably left out since 2.1, are a big one. I know you can find ROMs which include the different animations or use Launcher Pro, but they never operate 100% and stutter/glitch at random moments. Even the way the keyboard bounces onto the screen rather than just "appearing" gives a more polished feel. The clean simple UI, which lacks the clutter and plethora of menu's that Sense incorporates is a dream to navigate, and the overall speed of the OS is unrivalled. I guess for the "average user", Sense is a comfortable, intuitive blanket which makes Android accessible for the masses. In the Windows Mobile days and arguably when Cupcake/Donut were still in use, it was a necessity. Since 2.1 however, I feel it is no longer needed as the Android UI has evolved to a point where it should appeal to anyone.
Regards.
EDIT: Just seen your website Grant! Forgive the app recommendations, I see you are already well versed in alternatives.
Thanks guys!!
Im still not sure! I wasn't the interface i was worried about! I've given the customs a whirl and its been more the reliability and performance that have brought me back to the stock ROM. I've downloaded the CM7 zip! might give it a chance over the weekend before the week starts over! Ill always have my back-up for when HTC decide to give us an official release of 2.3.3.
Maybe ill never go back once i try CM7!
cheers
if your a gameloft gamer, i suggest sticking with a sense 2.2 rom. if your a audiophile, cm7.
So using it now! Love the look and feel except I find that its a big sticky when swiping between homescreens. Any suggestions?

Try a different launcher. Launcher Pro is one of the smoothest.
Regards.
The Regina 3D Launcher is one I've only just heard of - thanks to Pocketnow.com.
For anyone who hasn't tried CyanogenMod 7 - there are some screenshots here.
I've only tried 3 Roms so far on Android. It would be nice to have an ongoing poll based on member's records or vote or something to see which ones are the most popular.

One thing I found missing is the ability to hide certain albums within the gallery. A nice feature when you've lots of crap on you SD card! Also having the GPS issue that seems pretty widespread.
Other than that, battery life = more awesome than Stock!
