Ava-FroyoV3 Q&A - How-to's, fixes, what to expect. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seems like this is becoming needed, with so many redundant and ridiculous posts in the developer's thread.
Firstly, here's the scoop from Avalaunch himself:
Im proud to release, a 100% fully functional 2.2 Sense for the HTC Evo.
It is the official rom. and you will not lose root.
Working-EVERYTHING!!!
Bt works
4G works
3G tethering works (legally of course)
Wifi works
You can now record with the camcorder.(see i promised you all i would fix it by the weekend)
If you can not start 4G on first boot, restart. if you still cant, then wipe and flash the ROM ONLY!
Lastly, i can not be blamed for bricking or anything that may happen. follow my instructions and you should be set.
If there are any little issues, i will address them at a later time. i have had one hour of sleep and worked all day. im sorry but i dont care right now
Quirks-not all applications will show up in market. this will be fixed after google adds the evo to the database after release.
- i did not install busybox because of 4G issues. CLICK PROBLEMS? ON TITANIUM BACKUP TO ALLOW IT TO INSTALL BUSYBOX
and yes. i beat a company in releasing their software
Special thanks to Sprint, Google, and HTC for the amazing work they did. Super special thanks to Sprint for finally listening to customers and proving they ARE the best network

Third, here are the steps required to install the ROM:
You must be rooted, and nand unlocked before continuing. Do not even try this if you have no idea what I'm talking about:
1) Download the 3 files
2) Transfer to SD Card, reboot into recovery
3) Wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache
4) Flash the ROM
5) Flash the radio
6) Reboot, it will return to recovery
7) Flash the wimax update
7) Reboot, it will return to recovery
8) Reboot into rom
9) Enjoy!

Thanks to SimonTuffGuy:
New location is /system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip
Rebooted into recovery, mounted system and did:
adb shell

exit
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/customize/resource/
I made sure that my animation was named bootanimation.zip and in the same folder as adb.
adb reboot - and enjoy your new animation."
NOTE: I cannot test this, because I don't use Ava-Froyo. Someone please PM me confirming this is a go.

I, too, had a broken WiFi tether. However, I didn't ***** about it and set out to fix it. Here's what I did:
Download and the latest android-wifi tether from here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...me=wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre4.apk&can=2&q=Evo
Reboot your phone.
Open wifi tether, go to settings, hit menu, and "reinstall binaries/configs".
See if it works now.

EDIT 1: I may have been too quick to the draw. I'm running netarchy's kernel, and it works fine. Let me reboot and flash Ava back on top, and try again.
EDIT 2: Yep, doesn't work in stock Ava ROM. Finding a fix.

Yes, currently you can fix this, but you will lose your rear camera! Don't say I didn't tell you so. If at any time you wish to have camera functionalily, flash the ROM again on top of it. It's that simple.
http://hannsz.com/XDA/netarchy-3.7.3c-froyo-signed.zip
However, I have managed good results with this!
- Overclocking to 1152mhz works
- Linpack getting 46 and change MFLOPS
- 5 sensor multitouch works
- fps2d averaging 53fps, hardware 0003 Novatek panel
Flash this on top of the ROM. To restore the camera, FLASH THE ORIGINAL ROM

Can the radio and wimax updates be installed without the ROM for use with some other ROM (like CM6 or other)?

Sticky Please!
I vote to make this thread a sticky. I will flash this ROM as soon as I get home and this thread will be very useful.

Terminal emulator is not able to find su commands. When not in root, typing reboot gives "permission denied". After typing su, and getting the # prompt, reboot command returns "not found".
I tried reinstalling busybox via Titanium Backup. Terminal emulator's first command is "export PATH=/data/local/bin:$PATH"
Should that be changed so that su commands can be used in all directories?

Confirmed. I tried plugging in to check out my powertop, but no joy. I'm also not 100% sure if vanilla kernels can even RUN powertop, but regardless I was having superuser command execution issues as well.

I believe AdFree needs access to the system partition unless you create a symlink, which is a lot of faff for a text file really.

[Q] Trouble getting recovery image and superuser access

Hey guys I looked all over for a solution for hours and I didn't see a thread containing my exact problem/solution so I will post it here. Here is my problem:
I flashed TMartin's Gingersense Rom and thought it was flashable back to recovery, but I realized it was a complete system dump after doing so. I have downloaded the new Superuser update to 2.3.6.1 although the phone doesn't detect it. This is what it says: "an error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sd card, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary."
My Evo doesn't think it's rooted even though it has the superuser app installed. I also tried using Rom Manager to reboot into recovery mode but it says this: "you must root your phone for Rom Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use google search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone." I have also tried to turn it off and press "voldown+power" and it goes straight to the rom. I believe I've overwritten the recovery image and I even know where to begin. I had clockwork 2.6 and 2 nandroid back-ups before doing this. Is there something I'm missing? Please help!
same thing happened with me and a couple evo's on my xp pro box.
what i did was, i just started the process over from the beginning...one of them took a couple times to stick.

Well Tmartin had a flashable zip of the gingersense rom. In the thread that got closed, in the OP, there were a few links. One was for a flashable zip, and the others were the system dump, as you noted.
When you boot to the bootloader, does it show you S off, or S on? When you select recovery from the bootloader, what is your result? Do you get a black screen/red triangle? Or does it just hang at the splash or something? If you're S off, you should just be able to flash a PC36IMG of recovery, and then flash a new rom from there. If you're S on, and have no recovery, then you'll need to re root your phone.
How do I even go about doing that?
Oh woops I didn't see you reply k2buckley lol. I can't boot into the bootloader, it goes straight into the rom.

Shut down your device. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. After a short pause, a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. You will then be in the bootloader menu. At the top, you should see either S-ON or S-OFF.

Just tried it. It doesn't boot into the bootleader, it just goes straight to the rom. I can imagine it has to be S-Off because it has superuser permissions (even though I can't access) it

You can't get to your bootloader? Are you on the Gingerbread Sense rom? If so, go to menu>settings>applications. Uncheck "fastboot". THen shut your phone off, and try to get to the bootloader again. Should work this time.

Yea, I only remember because it happened to me when I tested out that rom, lol. I too am running SalvageMod 1.2.1. It's been my daily for a bit now, just super smooth and stable for me. I was running some of the Salvage Nightlies too, which were good. The nightly 13 I tried had music controls on the lockscreen, which I'm a big fan of. It also came with Tiamat 3.3.7 kernel, which my phone hates. I went back to the stable build for now. I'm also curious to see Myn's next project. That interview that was on Good and Evo revealed that he's working on Warm Gingerbread. I keep hoping for one of those emails from Myn, with a nice link to some beta action!
To The OP:
Glad you got it worked out! Good deal man.

I tried to flash the overclocked kernel and now Im stuck in a bootloop and can't load recovery or be recognized in fastboot usb. It seems like I may have bricked my phone any suggestions. PLEASE HELP
update - I fixed it lol almost thought my dinc 2 was a brick
I may be in the same situation and would like to know how you solved your problem.
I rooted successfully and was running the Gingersense rom with the stock kernel. I wanted to OC a kernel so I downloaded one that I think was intended to run with MIUI. I made a backup so I figured if the kernel didn't work I could always go back.
After installing the new kernel I went into a boot loop. I pulled the battery, got into recovery and tried to restore a backup, but now I freeze on the HTC screen. I've tried three different backups and none of them work -- all freeze on the HTC screen.
I am becoming desperate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Have you tried wiping everything (including /system under "mounts and storage") before restoring the backup? Or tried flashing a different rom? Probably happened because the kernels for AOSP roms and sense roms aren't interchangeable. I would think that restoring a backup would rewrite the boot partition though, which should fix it..
I wiped everything (did data wipe/factory resets as well as wiping everything individually, several times) and could never get any of my backups to work.
I finally copied CM7.1 beta onto the SD card and flashed that (after first having to scrounge to find a card reader and computer that would read an SDHC card) and that worked.
I tried restoring one of my previous backups over CM7.1 (with and without wiping) and went back to freezing on the HTC screen again on each one of them. Don't understand that, since everything was working fine when those backups were made.
Anyway, now I'm using CM7.1 and have a working phone again.
Thanks for your work on this. Much appreciated for helping to realize my dream of a fully-rooted Inc2.
/bow
Ihave the same issues with backup not restoring and getting the white screen. Might need a new SD card.

help needed

hey ive really new to the world of android after moving from iphone and i need help. ive managed to root my phone have clockworkrecovery installed and working, but the problem comes when i try to install the liquidsmooth rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911009) i clear everything but when i go to install the first part i get a status aborted status 7, please help any advice would be useful
What version of CWM do you have?
EDIT - After looking through the development thread for the ROM (which i'm going to assume you didn't) i found several mentions of your issue. The ROM devs confirmed my suspicion that the problem lies most likely in an outdated CWM recovery. Download Clockwork Rom Manager from the market and install the latest recovery version for your device, i'm going to assume its the AT&T SG3 but this is a guess since you didn't say what device you are using. Once the recovery is installed try flashing again. I'm going to make another guess and say you probably dont have a working OS on your phone either, if this is true you have 2 choices...you can either download the recovery from here CWM 6.0.1.2: http://db.tt/QHZZqecH and copy it to an external sd card and flash it from the the existing recovery OR you will have to flash a different rom that will boot up to get you to the market.
P.S. - In the future try to provide as much information as possible to help out whoever may be trying to help you. What phone you have, what rom you are on if any, what you have attempted in effort to fix the problem. The more info you give the easier it will be for someone to help you, and improve your chances of getting it fixed quickly.

Download the above file.
Using adb shell or terminal emulator:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recoveryfilename.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
Make certain that you get this command right. Typing the wrong number could result in a brick!

Also, I know you're new around here but this kind of stuff go in Q&A. this being said, have fun flashing ROMs and kernels and be careful with what you flash. I dont think Bricking a 600$ device is so funny.

I would have to agree with liltitiz once you get the rom going and use TWRP, the interface is much easier to use, it includes a built in file manager as well as on screen keyboard support for naming backups as you run them.
Go to this link download the recovery.img
Follow the indications. Two methods are offered to you.
Android App Install Method (Preferred):
Download the GooManager app from either location:
Market Link
Direct Download
Install the app and open it. Tap menu then hit Install OpenRecoveryScript. Tap Yes. Verify that the filename displays your device's code name and hit Yes. The file will download and your device will install the recovery automatically.
Download - Recovery Image

openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-d2att.img
Download the above file.
Using adb shell or terminal emulator:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recoveryfilename.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

that seems a little to advanced for me
Lets start at the top, can you boot your phone or are you stuck with no OS currently? I'm gonna be here for a while so check back often and we can get this sorted out tonight.

Ok, go ahead to the google play store and search for clockwork rom manager, download this and install it. Once inside the app the top button will ask you to choose your device to install the latest recovery image, of course you are looking form Samsung Galaxy S3 AT&T. Once the download is complete it will automatically install, at this point you can click the reboot into recovery button and follow the OP for installing the ROM.
ROM manager for cwm recovery. You need to pay if you want touche recovery.
Or use the first method from my other post. Using goo manager from the play store to get twrp recovery. Which I prefer over cwm touch.
Either way are easy and depends only on what recovery you want

Yup, one at a time. No offense but two sets of instructions could be confusing to a new user. Get a working phone first, then go for the tweaks and experiment....a little at a time and carefully.
Haven't heard from him (or her) in a while, hope they are too busy checking our their sweet new ROM to let me know if they got it working
Let's hope so. One.....drawback....I guess in android is that there is usually 7 different ways to get to the same end result and that's what confuses most new users.....too many options :what:

Drawback or exactly the point depending on how you look at it i suppose. Thats the beauty and challenge of open source, which is why reading and understanding what you are getting into is emphasized so much....although seemingly hopelessly sometimes.

Any luck? Plus I don't know if you use Sprint service or not, but I know people couldn't get service with other note 7 port. So I tried editing a couple different data ports myself. I don't use Sprint so I can't test if they work. I know they work for my GSM sim. If you need to try them post me back

So this is what happend, the rom successfully booted only installing the rom zip and nothing else on pe2. Vitamin kernel did not boot. As for as datafix, the datafix you showed me got signal but started problems like fc on keyboard
Flash the keyboard fix on the main forum... it worked for me..

It looks like it's from the data fix changing the customer.xml, from what I can tell by reading the thread, if you replace the original customer.xml it's good.
Tomorrow I'm gonna try this port and compare it to the one I'm on.

I didn't try it yet. I downloaded it.
I'm on x-rom now. I wanted to so I could compare them. But I get a little flash happy sometimes and just got done flashing and testing different Roms over last 2 days. Ive been experimenting with these non Sprint Roms cause I don't use Sprint. Had to take a break and get some work done though.
I really love AOSP for its not bloated and emotion runs the best to me. But I always end up missing TouchWiz features.
I might go back to dtux though. I'm one of those guys that's always tinkering.
PS. I seen the op of that ROM said he's getting ready to release another version with some fixes.

Ok so I went ahead and flashed this. Works great! Flashed it with fix I made so keyboard works and also flashed open gapps package. Did have to flash the sms fix to. Here's what I did.
Download Rom here. And sms fix here. And my Data fix attached below. Optional to download Gapps.
1. Boot recovery, wipe everything except ext sd card.
2. Then flash files in following order:
a. Rom
b. My data fix
c. Sms fix
d. Gapps package (optional)
3. Reboot. It takes a while.
Enjoy!
Xda isn't letting me upload right now, hope I can post it later.
Here is data fix:
