All,
After replacing a TP2 with a not-so-good button, I had the joy of re-doing all my contacts. Even though I had the contacts backed up in multiple forms (myphone, sim card copies, etc), I still had to re-enter all the ringtones and facebook account connections. No fun!
How can I make a safe backup copy of ALL the contact data? Not just the least-common-denominator data that all phones share, but ALL the data including TP2-specific items like FB links and ringtones?
Thanx,
/Mark
Try Pim Backup.
No joy, PIM backup does not include the Facebook link.
To recap, I am trying to find a COMPLETE backup tool, which can backup Contacts, including Ringtones and Facebook links.
HTC people, is there anything for this? Please let me know what I can do. Otherwise, I'll be very unlikely to take advantage of hotfixes (which I understand must wipe the device).
Thanx,
/Mark

People might start thinking I am working for Google, but I am not. If you use Gmail, you can sync with Gmail using Exchange and the photos are synced back and forth, which means that they keep their facebook pictures or any other picture used.

I don't work for Google, but I may apply...
i dont know of any app that saves the facebook link in contacts, but what i've done is renamed all my contacts to how their names are spelled on facebook and it took care of the issue for me.

Yea, this is the easiest way to do it, but you don't need the full name. Just the first name or the first part of their name. It will list the closest match and you just go through each one and select them.
BTW, the Gmail thing saves the pictures only, not the link. Still, I was thinking that was a pretty cool thing because it also reflects that in Gmail apps.
Hey guys,
Justa few quick questions ...
Is there an application or something that will log all the apps I have downloaded via my account and list them for me, so when I do a backup I knwo what I had before?
Is there an app to list the above AND download the latest versions without me having to manually do anything (Shashimi for Android).
I have loads of text on my Tytn is there an easy way to back these up in a rar file or something. I don't want to import them to the desire just store them.
I sue S2U2, I like the Android lock screen BUT I like being able to view my texts/emails without unlocking the device, what options do I have?
Lastly, is there an app to automatically backup your text on a weekly basis and email it to your gmail as an archive? I want it to also ignore the previous week's text.
Am I asking too much L.o.L.?

I don't have an Android phone yet ...and won't do until 7/8/9-April... but playing with my wife's Hero this is what I know...
You seem to have to create a level of Google account in orpder to purchase from Android Market and logging into your Google Account and going to Android Market will bring up a list of your previously downloaded apps.
I haven't found a stand alone app for this but purchasing your apps through AppBrain.com and using their AppBrain app seems to do what your asking. AppBrain doesn't seem to list all apps though - definitely missing UK specific apps such as Beebplayer.
I've had WinMo phones for the past 8 years and never heard of a facility to do this - if there is one I'd be chuffed to hear about it myself.
Dunno - someone else will have to answer this one I'm afraid
I believe that most backup apps will do a scheduled backup - Sprite Backup definitely does but to the SD Card only (no automailer), but WRT ignoring previously backed up messages I've not heard of this feature in any backup app.
I hope this helps to some extent.

AppBrain allows you to create lists on their site, so when you change phones or wipe it, you can tell it to reinstall the whole list. I did that when I moved from G1 to Desire -- worked like a charm.

You should ask that in TyTN forum

THANKS ALL!
Will have a look at this FabianNL as if I can export to individual files then I will be happy. To be honest it isn't a big deal .
Been playing with my Desire for a while, I can see the appeal of Android it's quick, big buttons, keyboard isn't back considering I'm coming from Tytn (as well as a Touch HD but that was BAD).
My next step is ... what programs should I "replace"? I'm refering to applications like mail, text/messages, etc the build in ones.
I am though over the moon with the device the text input ROCKS! I do have a list of applications I need suggestions on though ... I'm used to the following on Windows Phone so I need an Android variation ...
G-Alarm - A Comprehensive alarm application
G-Profile - easily change my profiles from night, work, home, etc, this would be great as a widget
Task Facade - A general task manager that will show all my running applications and let me close/switch
Wake On Text/Email/etc - As it says ... and stay awake until message has been read!
Lock Without using Power button - easy ...
That's about it for now
I use Klaxon for my alarms.
SMS Popup will turn on the screen when you get text messages (not sure if there is similar for emails) and can give reminders untill it's read.
As far as profiles, then would HTC's Scenes not do the trick? Failing this Locale can automagically turn on and off services and silent/loud the ringer based on various criteria like time and location.
You can easily switch to recent apps by pressing and holding the home key
And there are loads of Task Managers on the market for killing running apps
What does sense have for managing profiles?
Hi,
I would like replace my TyTn II to HTC Desire but Im not shure if I will be happy with Desire(Android)...
Main things which wory me are:
1.)Synchronization with PC with USB cable. I DON'T want and will not sync with google account. All I need is same automatic sync line with activesync. I need sync Contacts, Calendar, Emails(Configure which folders), Task's, Notes. Sync will be done with MS Outlook 2007/2010.
2.)Is possible set more than one email account? I need 3x pop3/smtp email accounts.
3.)Is possible disable threaded SMS/MMS? I realy hate this function.
4.)Is there any app which allow connet to windows remote desktop(RDP and not any 3rd party VNC or other)?
5.)Is there some app/pack which can work with word, excel, power point files?
6.)Does included browser support certificates? I know that opera mobile on WinMo do not support it, so I can't manage cPanel server, make payments(bank)...
I think that this is enought for start
Thanks for any help and answers.
Best regards, _Dejan_
Got this yesterday after the T-Mob udapte. Its in Settings/Accounts & Sync. I cant find any widget or program for this 'MyPhonebook'. How do you use it?
I also wanna know, tried to do anything wit it yesterday but nothing works no idea what's it for
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
Found it. T-Mobile has a free service that automatically backs up all contacts to a website - where they can be recovered if phone is lost or stolen.
Edit: Tried to activate it on T-mobile website... but HTC Desire is not on the list available for this service. Will it be activated in future... will ask next time I call customer service... :/
So I just rang up T-Mobile about this - typically useless response saying "we don't support this" and "you'll need to contact HTC". Now I could be wrong here, but isn't this T-Mobile functionality that they rolled out to us in their last update? Maybe this will work on Froyo?
Anyone have anymore info on this before I send T-Mobile a rude email?
...anyone know if this will be working soon? Thanks
I'd like to know how to get rid of this. I am so sick of the way this phone handles contact management.
These are the files you have to remove I think.

Hi,
I'm using T-Mobile but unfortunately on my non-branded HTC Desire Z the Software is not installed. Does anyone have an APK for this App?
Or can anyone recommend a sync/backup tool to save contacs (important: I'm using the field "second name" and some sync-tools don't copy this field)
Greetings
Heiko
What is wrong with the std. sync of all your google contacts? Have worked flawlessly for me since day 1, and every time i try out a new rom they are downloaded as soon as i enter my google account..
There is nothing wrong with Google-Sync, but maybe call me paranoid, but I don't want to have my contacts (including their mail-adresses) stored by Google.
It is known that GoogleMail scans the Mails to show ads.
I don't want Google to scan my Adress-Book for Mail-Adressens of my friends. Sure, they state they won't do it, but you can't be sure......
Using a phone-provider like T-Mobile is also risky, but I trust them more than Google concerning data-privacy.

Hey HHLieber, I extracted/deodexed the apks of MyPhonebook from my T-Mob branded stock (Desire) for v2.1 and v2.2.1 (both tested with MoDaCo ROM r8/r9).
Could not say if syncing is possible, because I'm using Vodafone. If you want these apks, let me know it.
Another idea with syncing is an own funambol (SyncML) server (also tested - SyncML stores a complete vcard in database).
But if you use a "Desire Z" with Stock ROM, are you able to store more information than first name and family name? Because I've never seen a HTC Stock ROM with this possibility (contact type "Phone" - HTC Desire/HD/S, HTC Wildfire/S). Also I couldn't set a type of mail address like "private" or "work".
Hi cxp_,
I just checked my Contact-List and you are correct:
The Name is listed as Surname, Firstname Secondname.
But if I click on edit, I don't see the field for secondname nor can I edit the name as it is stated on the edit-view as Firstname Surname.
Strange....
I achieved this construct by uploading the contacts from Outlook to my Google-Account, then exported it as VCF-File and imported it to my Desire.
It was a great battle, but I have to use the Second-Name-Field.
Can you copy me the APK-File?
We tried it yesterday using MyPhoneExplorer. A Collegue has a T-Mobile-branded Desire, downloaded the APK via MyPhoneExplorer and copied me the file. Unfortunately something went wrong since I cant install it on my phone - nor can't another collegue using an unbranded Desire

Thats the problem of HTC. They disabled some usefull contact information fields in their framework. I don't know why, but it is totally stupid. I have the same problems, storing all contact information in one contact type (without using "google"). Syncing with funambol or even vcard export/import will not bring back all contact information. For a smartphone, very disappointing.
I talked to htc support in germany, first answer was a standard reply from faq or so that it is possible, second answer from an engineer was "ok, your're right...not possible but i forward this idea, perhaps an update will fix that".
So, even the new devices from htc have this "bug/problem with phone contacts". Some weeks ago, I flashed a No-Sense Rom (originally from nexus one) to my desire with the result, that all fields were available. So, it must be a restriction of htc.
Your problem with branded rom was, that the apk files (used for MyPhonebook) are deodexed. So you have not only the apk file, but also a .dex file. To transfer it to another phone, you have to merge them with the use of some tools an the framework files. And also you need some other files.
I attached MyPhonebook for Android 2.1 (Eclair) and 2.2.1 (Froyo). (Structure from root directory)

Gosh! You're right.
Just checked it with a collegues phone: Samsung Something.
He has second name and so on.....
Hmm.... Can't you disable HTC Sense? On Windows Phone, Sense was just an add-on. I'm not so amused concerning the idea of re-flashing my phone.
Heiko
Without HTC Sense, you can't use any of htc apps (contact, calendar, messages..etc.). It is possible to remove Sense, but you will need the standard android apps.
The "No-Sense" version of MoDaCo comes with the standard apps and default framework. In "Sense" version you could also include standard apps beside htc apps, but this wouldn't help. In my opinion, the modified framework is major problem. Even with default android apps, I got the restricted version of contact.
So, I think without reflashing your phone, you wouldn't be able to add more information to your contacts. Funambol syncing and MyPhonebook are no solutions for you.
In my case, I only needed the detailed mail information and with MyPhonebook I can do this. But also syncing is a problem for me (Funambol).
I think, it's a problem of using vcard v2.1 for export/import and sync. Tested it with one contact (containing all possible information), only ~75% was restored.
Shame on HTC, In my case I'm not sure. Living with that disadvantage or selling phone and buy a LG or Samsung (rootable). Or a second trouble when buying new phone in the future and transfer contacts (with losing information)
Face it, with every new phone, you have to adapt to the functions of the new phone.
I used Windows Phone for many years, beginning with a non-touch-phone and then moving onward using Windows Phone 6.1 and later 6.5, always with HTC-Devices.
Windows Phone 7 is no alternative for me, since it looks like a blame copy of iPhone OS (only MS-Approved Apps, no access to the file-system, use of Zune....).
Since the App-Support for WM6.5 is vanishing, I had to change.
Android looked like a good alternative. And HTC-Devices weren't a bad idea either in the past.
Maybe you are right and the next phone won't be from HTC.....
You're right. HTC devices aren't bad and the update periods are quicker than from other manufacturer.
For you, reflashing with No-Sense Rom is an idea and the flashing process is not a big deal.
I consider about "living with the fact of sync problems", "reflashing with no-sense rom and the lost of nice sense apps" or "sell old one and buy something new".
Since my phone is up and running, I guess I will live with the crippled contact-fields.
Another Idea: Am I right that Android uses several Contact-Databases which are somehow merged? Thus would it be possible to create a new contact-database with the wanted field and then merge this new DB with the already existing contact-list?
P.S. I tried to copy your Phonebook-Files to my phone but had no success. Do I have to root it bevore copying the files?
No that's not right and wouldn't be usefull. (but thats not the problem)
Android uses one SQLite database called contacts2.db (before v2.1 - filename was contacts.db). In this database all information is stored, like contacts and call history. It is located in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases.
The database contains one table called "settings". In it, there are all contact types your phone have (like phone, google, myphonebook, facebook etc.). Contacts are stored in another table with the hint of one of these contact types.
(table "settings" | columns: "account_name", "account_type", "ungrouped_visible", "sould_sync")
I tried to create and export a filled database from android emulator. Like it seems, there is no difference between emulator database and my database from desire.
So, the database structure was not changed by htc, only the api or something else what establish the conntection between database and gui (contacts app). One idea would be to exchange databases and look what stored information htc app display (all stored information including second name and so on or only self-editable fields).
to myphonebook: You have to use "ADB Shell" from android sdk to push them (no install from sd card or so). In fact of this, /system partition have to be writeable. The xml and jar file are also required.
Can't tell you, if it is possible to remount /system writeable with adb shell without rooting the device. (had done this after rooting process and included it in a rom)

If the DB wasn't changed/touched by HTC, then it must be the Contact-App, which only uses some Data-Fields of the Contact-DB.
Then it should be possible to use some other Contact-App, don't you think?
One point remains: Do other Apps (Phone, SMS, Facebook....) have native access to the DB or do they use the Contact-App?
1. In my "contacts" section, I am missing three people (my girl and two close friends). Discovered pretty quickly that they are in my "favorites" section in the stock CM7 dialer. The strangeness comes when I remove them from my favorites, they don't return to my general contacts listing. I don't want to make a new entry for these people and have hella doubles in my synced google contacts, am I doing something wrong? Is this a bug of some kind?
2. I can't seem to find a way to "link" contacts like I used to be able to in Sense, but perhaps that was just a nicety of Sense. If there's no way, I'll just have to do some painstaking contact maintenance and clean it up for good.
Thanks in advance for the help
1. Confirm your settings under Menu->Display Options. It may not be showing all of your contacts by default. Make sure to check the actual gmail/other accounts to see if groups are unchecked..
2. Edit a contact, then press Menu->Join.

AWESOME. I kept searching in "settings," completely overlooked display options as if it weren't even there! Thank you, all problems solved!
I would like to merge text messages located on 4 devices:
1. WM5 phone
2. WM6.1 phone
3. Another WM6.1 phone
4. WM7 phone.
How do I do this?
I would like for all messages to be merged into one file, threaded and easily accessed for archive purposes. I didn't forward my WM5 messages to WM6.1 because that seemed unreliable when I researched it when I first got the WM6.1phone and searching now still gives various processes and I don't know if any will work moving forward to WM7. I would prefer not to send everything to a Gmail account and have my data mined...so...how do I do this?
I don't have the WM7 phone yet, but will. And, I have 20,000+ messages... I know some messages I have are duplicates (on the WM6.1 phones) so would like for the process/software to check for duplicates.
I doubt I would want to load the whole file on my WM7 phone as I am sure it would slow things down incredibly, however, an option to do that if I need to would be nice (or on a WM6.1 phone). I am looking for something to be able to access them all on a PC at least.
Thanks for considering this!
G.
For your SMS messages on your WM devices, you can use this software to perform successive backups and restores from your older devices to your current 6.1 device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705. Start with the older one, backup then restore/merge to the next one, backup then restore/merge to the final 6.1 device. I would advise doing a separate backup on all devices just to be safe. Make sure you select the option to merge or add rather than delete messages on the device when restoring. Instructions are on the authors site: http://www.dotfred.net/default.htm
On WP7 however there is no way to backup or restore SMS at this time, dont think there is even a way to sync to an exchange server so accessing your older texts on your WP7 device will have to wait until a solution of some sort is found.
Thanks efjay! I saw that post but was concerned that it was a little buggy and didn't allow for editing on a PC. Also, does it check for duplicate texts--couldn't find it on the author's page nor a search of the original post? I do see it creates duplicate contacts and appointments which isn't encouraging. Of course I can use any of a number of programs for editing on my PC once I get them all in one place but would like to ask the community's help first and not waste time. Have you done what I am trying to do?
Thanks again!
G.
I dont know if it checks for duplicate texts, and the backups I've done have been with emails. Maybe exporting to a text file will make it easier to remove the duplicates.
However here is something else you could try. Download a trial for Resco Backup, which includes a desktop tool to view the backup sets, you may find it useful. I had to use this to restore some emails from my WM device some time back when they got deleted from the server. See how that goes.
