Scott Hanselman just got his phone:
Rob Miles had one for a while:
Scott Hanselman's overview was pretty good. He constantly praised the platform as being surprisingly fast and stated he loved the mobile bing maps. The only cons he seems to have is copy/paste.
More importantly the merged Facebook contacts problem. I think we might see that changed before launch.
Hanselman also pointed something I was also afraid of:
Facebook integration with contacts is a mistake.
Also:
"There's a lot of "it just works" stuff going on. I'm used to everything being configurable."
I'm a bit shocked that they don't have a way to control the facebook integration. I mean this is one of Kin's headline features (that you could have different levels of "friends"). Hopefully this is something they're just hiding til launch. Not sure why they would but there's hope.
That being said, it doesn't really bother me since I "only" have about 300 or so people on facebook. If I get annoyed I'll just delete people from my FB. I probably should do that anyways, heh.

Ah by the way I was just quoting a developer review.
So they're probably meaningless geeks.
Why to bring their reviews here than?
I would just give phones to people on the street and make the interviews

Useless data with no information about the target audience is pointless.
MSDN is still king of the developer networks, and everybody who's in the .NET or XNA community is seems ready to play with WP7.
There's a much larger amount of .NET developers wanting to tinker with WP7, than Java developers wanting to tinker with Android.
And the business model is still much better for WP7 than Android. Specially for European application developers, where Android Market still don't support buying applications in a very large number of countries.

Yes it is exactly you, deprecating other posters here.
Actually many "sheeps" here show much better, well based argumentation and better situation overview,
than you "developer" or whoever you are.
Calling non-developers for sheeps is hardly a insult, it's a metaphor, and I didn't invent it.
Using rude/fowl language, personal attacks, and direct insults however, is a totally different story. But it's typical ignorant haters like yourself.

After a short, and forced, vacation I'm back! LOL Anyways.. My ELF rom will be recooked shortly. Primary support will STILL be at htc-devs.com (I like it there ). n00bs are critical to the success of XDA-Developers. We tolerate and help them because our best developers were once n00bs. Devices are constantly changing and our "experts" constantly change too.
When m$ officially releases WM6 this forum will die back down to what it is 99% of the time. Then we will quietly begin taking apart the next generation of hardware and will start looking at the next generation of Windows Mobile.
The n00bs that we tolerated will drift away except those who can contribute. You will never find this on forums with zero n00b tolerance.

The great thing about the internet and the millions of subject based forums is that folks from all over the world can get together and share information on the subject of their choice. This free flow of information coupled with our fast paced lifestyle does lend to folks wanting to ask rather than search since they see it as the fastest way to get the information they seek. For the most part a gentle nudge in the right direction is all they need. The downside is that forums also provide a venue for those who lack knowledge to demonstrate their self perceived superiority anonymously. It's far easier and less costly to ignore a post that you think doesn't deserve a response. If you feel the need to reply you should respect the individuals who are providing the equipment, time, and bandwidth that makes the forum you are using possible. You do this by posting intelligent and informative responses.

I don't know if it's been asked, but what kind of Windows Live intergration will we see. Will it be the half-ass stuff we see now, or will we FINALLY see calendar syncing.
I guess I should have just asked if we'll see windows Live calendar in Windows Phone 7.
I was about to ask the same thing. I heard in one of the videos that multiple calendars would be supported (Ie: work, personnal etc...) Now I'm digging in the emulator to see if WL Cal is finally supported, so I can ditch gmail alltogether.
EDIT: I just went through the emulator, and since we can't add email accounts, I can't deny nor confirm the existence of WL Cal sync.
Allthough I SWEAR I heard Joe Belfiore saying that WLCal is supported...
it better be. It's really no excuse for it not being in there all this time to be honest.

But even the new one is worse than the one for the iPhone.

I had the new one but went back to the uglier old one. The new one would not save a found address to contacts. And the older one is a little more finger friendly. The newer one just looks better...style but not enough substance.
It's a shame the iPhone one look's so much better, but I think it has something to do with the SDK. iPhone's SDK probably lends itself to great looking apps with minimal effort by the developer as opposed to WM.

They do have a Bing mobile website for the iPhone (and I think maybe certain other devices) that makes m.bing.com look like a piece of crap. They also have the good iPhone app, as you pointed out. On WM I just stuck with the old Live Search App because it has Movies and Gas Prices and such.
Back on topic, Windows Live is fully integrated, including the Calendar.

You are right. But then, why did they have to dump the whole OS, if a new SDK would have been the solution to most of theri problems?
Imagine WM6.5 with a better UI and a good SDK. Problems solved. They could have released that a year ago and it would have been perfectly competitive to the iPhone.
Instead, they did nothing for more than one and a half years, cause they could not figure out what to do (though everyone here knew it). In the end, there was no other option left than dump the whole OS and start a new one, without all the things we loved about WM. Sad.
They screwed up completely and they still don't know what to do. The fights within the company still aren't over (though the iPhone enviers within MS won the first round). This is inexcusable.

Again, you're being very presumptuous. Do have inside information or something?
I do have a bit of information, yes. But most of it is widely known, anyway.
How do I know that the ugly, non-fingerfriendly UI and the lousy SDK were Windows Mobile's main problems? Just a bit of common sense.
After all, what were the things that made the iPhone successful? It's easy to use and it has apps, apps, apps.
It certainly weren't the lousy camera or the lack of features or the annoying restrictions.
I think it'll be tightly integrated since you'll be able to see peoples updates through the windows live profiles as well.
I hope it has good integration so I can finally have one consitent contact list. Some are an outlook, some are on messenger. Having doubles is a pain in the beginning and take a good time to clean it up. Now they're both on my phone but still half/half on my software.

iPhone was successful long before it had apps. It was a great product despite it's perceived flaws. WP7 should follow suit.

It was the UI. Everyone could use that thing, it was even easier to use than most people's dumbphones, thus they had no problems switching to the iPhone and of course, they liked it, cause it could do much more than the dumbphones they had before. They didn't know that Windows Mobile existed and had much more features and they didn't care, cause Windows Mobile was not as easy to use as a dumbphone.
Before the iPhone had apps, a good UI would have been enough for Windows Mobile. When the iPhone got an SDK, a good SDK would have saved Windows Mobile (plus maybe an appstore).
It's that easy, but Microsoft screwed it all up.
Here's my comparison between WP7, iPhone OS, Android and WM6.5, webOS and Maemo!
It's been about time that somebody did it.
It's a work in progress, I will add and update things.

Hmm there's something strange about that chart. One of those columns just doesn't look like the other three. Wonder if options were made to reflect that?
When I made the chart, I tried to find as many categories as possible. I did not think about opinions, I just tried to collect facts.
The coulouring was done AFTER the original chart. Thus, the chart itself is in no way influenced by my opinion.
If you think categories are missing, please tell me! I want as many facts as possible, regardless of which OS they favor.
That said, I did do the colouring according to my opinion. I did not color one column after another, thus I also did not deliberately colour one of them with more green than others.
I think my methods are as balanced as they can possibly be.
If you have another opinion, feel free to colour the chart differently!
(there is no copyright )
Again: Feel free to colour the chart differently, to show your opinions!
Please don't flame each others' opinions! State your own opinions by colouring the chart, but fon't flame!
Also, if you think categories are missing, please tell me!
Anyone with knowledge want to add Symbian?
I hear Nokia plan to release a few great devices, but I don't know enough about Symbian, unfortunately.
I think it all depends on your view of each item. I don't think most of them can be shown as pure green or red, except maybe on the items that either have it or they don't. For example you may say full multitasking on OS is green but what comes with that? More apps may bog the system down or make the battery not last as long. I know on my Touch Pro2 I always kill an app from the task manager when I close it because I don't want it to effect anything like that. So in someone else's eyes full multitasking may not be a good thing. And differences in opinion can go either way on most of those. So yes that is your opinion and I respect it but I'll stick to the chart without color for a less biased view of the OS's.

You know what, I really cannot believe that people on this forum are even having this discussion.
UNIX was a multi-user, multi-tasking operating system RELEASED IN 1969.
That's 40 YEARS AGO.
So if you try and take the M$/Apple side on this argument, it's tantamount to admitting that technology should take a 40 year step backwards, and that you honestly believe that the development of timesharing/multi-tasking, which reinvented computing and made it accessible to every person, was a bad thing.
@Kloc
Wasn't that disclaimer big enough? Didn't I say it's purely MY OPINION?!
What the f*** is so hard to understand about that?!
I want multitasking, that's why it's green.
I want customization, that's why it's green.
I hate iTunes, that's why it's red.
And so on. If you have a different opinion, you can make your own colours!
I encourage you to state your own opinion (for example taky my chart and change the colours), but mine is NOT up for discussion!
The coloured chart represents my own, very personal opinion! NOTHING ELSE.
That is why I do not post it in the first post of this thread. The chart in the first post is NOT coloured, because it is FREE FROM OPINIONS.
Everybody is able to take the NON-COLOURED chart and from his own opinion.

Yes and Apple and MS's OS's are both multitasking and multithreaded OS's. Just beause they won't allow everyone to use it doesn't mean it can't. Non multitasking systems are something like old DOS. You go to print a document and you have to wait until the entire thing is printed before you can do something else. These systems are nothing like that. They are trying to innovate how multitasking is used in order to have effeicency on their devices.
Interesting article on Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/11/windows-phone-7-marketplace-hits-10-000-apps-wp7-updates-still/
Wonder what all the naysayers are going to say now
Hit 10K+ apps in less than 4 1/2 months is great. I figure when Microsoft opens up more portions of the OS and adds multi-tasking, it's really going to skyrocket. WP7 is here to stay
it only makes sense. Back when the iPhone broke the scene, apps were unheard of. Apple popularized them. By the time wp7 comes along, its the norm.
I love wp7 and will probly stick with it for a looong time, but you have to take a 'record' like this with a grain of salt.

granted, but what you can't take with a grain of salt is the app-able mobile operating systems that wp7 is having to compete against for business and/or the attention of developers.

sure haven't said:
it only makes sense. Back when the iPhone broke the scene, apps were unheard of. Apple popularized them. By the time wp7 comes along, its the norm.
I love wp7 and will probly stick with it for a looong time, but you have to take a 'record' like this with a grain of salt.

Tell that to Brew Mobile, Bada OS, Symbian ^3, and WebOS. This means something and it is a pity people prefer to post in threads bashing WP7's lack of speedy updates but fail to see how amazing the app progression has been.
Despite locking down many APIs! The only criticism I do have is this aspect since I really would love to see skype and whatsapp on WP7.
I don't know if like me you regularly check the marketplace for new apps but over the last 2-3 weeks the amount of crap has risen considerably.
I'd prefer it if apps were growing slower but with more quality.

While I agree with you, many less informed people out there relate amount of apps to the success of the OS.
So having lots is a good thing if WP7 is to encourage more and more buyers.

Yeah I guess when it comes to perception you're right.
all the app stores are full of crap with a smaller selection of really good apps/games. I think they are using the fact that app development has not slowed as a positive sign going forward.

Alright, that actually makes sense.
I'm not too manly to admit it: I was wrong on the internet.

WP7 has more developers than users. Those other OS's didn't throw as much bait money as Microsoft, plus they don't have all the big name OEMs behind them.
What bait money? You do realize that developers have to actually PAY money to be in the marketplace?
What is the point vetvito? You are the end user not the owner of the business. I mean, people just want to criticize sometimes.
So they spent a ton of money getting apps for their product. The consumer won. How is that a problem for us, the consumer?

Digger, that is what comes out when people have an agenda. Do not get tricked into that kind of discussion. Microsoft did hire a bunch of developers to push an initial offering of apps for WP7.
But that does not matter at all. We are the consumer. We want apps. Microsoft gave us 10,000 apps in no time at all.
Trust me, the next criticism to come is that 100% of the apps are junk. I can see it a mile away.

Yes, they did. You are the end user and this is good for you.
All I can say, from my limited experience with WP7 apps...actually games, they are re-sponsored ports of iPhone games. One classic example it Fruit Ninja. It's on nearly all systems but the one it appears to be designed for is the iPhone. The WP7 version and Android version isn't optimized for the system and screen aspect ratio. And the WP7 version was put out by MS. Apparently MS contracted with the dev to get it on WP7. There are other examples of this also.
So a portion of 3rd party apps are put out by MS, themselves, and not by their devs.
What a terribly biased article.
Just look at the headline:
Windows Phone 7 Marketplace hits 10,000 apps, Microsoft WP7 updates still way outnumbered

All Xbox Live games have to be put out by a publisher (similar to in the console market). Games like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds typically don't have publisher backing so Microsoft becomes the publisher. Microsoft's involvement doesn't extend beyond getting the game released.
I've been an WP7 advocate since it first appeared Q1 2010 and has avidly followed it up until I finally bought my HD7 back in Dec 2010. I love my device and the simplicity behind the OS, but there's a lot lacking. While the marketplace is booming with activity, there's still little developer support because of its you product life and I feel mango is launching a little late. In its current way, WP7 is still an abysmal OS, no one can deny that. And is the sole reason I will be switching back to android for a short minute until WP7 matures into something like this: The Early Concepts of WP7

A lot of hardware has launched with Android at the heart and its harder and harder to not acknowledge that. Just look at the Samsung Galaxy S2.
This is not to be a troll thread, and all I'm merely asking is anyone feeling like me.

I can deny that.
Further, I don't understand what those concepts feature that today's WP7 lacks. The ability to read email and answer phone calls?
This is absolutely a troll thread.

I can and DO deny this preposterous statement. WP7 has some shortcomings right now, but none of them are severe enough to prevent me from using and liking the phone. It is FAR from "abysmal".

Could have fooled me.
iOS and Android set the trend now Windows Phone 7 is refining it. Look at Mango... the things they've added...its not bolt ons, its not widgets or workarounds its deeply integrated things that have been well thought out and implemented. The Zune Software is a great example of this too and often gets overlooked. iTunes is an abhorrent mess, and Google well, you've got to search 3rd parties for something that provide the services that should be a core part of the operating system.
Wp7 is worth the wait. I spent way too much time messing around with android to get things working as they should.

I had a feeling someone would jump off the deep end and come at aggressively with the troll remarks. Look me up on Xbl: keenancook , I have WP7 gaming achievements because I own the HD7. But anyways, those pics were show what WP7 may have in the future and why I'm still considering the OS. But WP7 lacking a lot:
Applications, application, applications. WP7 is just lacking, time is what it needs and how many people are willing to wait.
Big Dev's aren't paying too much attention
Main System Menu is BLAND
Too Much Scrolling Just to get where I need.
Marketplace needs revision.
Having to Wait For Features.
As much as I like Android for what it is, I will never go back to that abysmally fragmented OS and half-baked feel. I can wait for Mango, which is bringing 80-90% of the features I wanted, and will see a huge surge in applications with all the new API's released.
wp7 UI is infinitely better than anything else out right now for me, and you add Mango to that, and I am very happy.
so according to your poll, i can only respond that im staying with WP7 if Im waiting for future updates?
What If I'm staying because I like what it IS.
I bought WP7 and I'm staying with WP7 because I like what it is NOW. Mango is extra gravy...

I completely agree about Zune, I've been using it since I first got my Zune 30. Its the MultiMedia Playback Software both visually and from a performance standpoint, Itune/DoubleTwist lags on my PC.
But my problem isn't with Zune, its WP7. Am I the only one who's sick of all the poorly developed apps by amateurs, because the professionals aren't interested? Tired of waiting for a decent banking app? Where my Wachovia App? What about my Onstar App? Wtf is up with the expensive pricing or XBLA games? I would love to play Cut the Rope, how long do I have to wait for that? Free Turn by Turn GPs is coming, but only in 2D, with no orientation, How long do I have to wait for that?

Obviously you just don't get it. You CAN'T like it for what it is, because it "is still an abysmal OS". Didn't you know that??

You don't have to wait for any of those things. Go buy an Android today, and boom! You're there. You can't have it both ways, though. You can't buy into a fledgling ecosystem and then act betrayed by the fact that it isn't as mature as one that has existed for years. That is a naive and immature reaction.
As for the apps you are clamoring for, many weren't possible with the APIs that have been available to developers. Microsoft realized this, and just this week released a new developer kit that includes over 1500 new APIs, which will cause the marketplace to expand at a much more rapid pace in the coming months.
