I don't code for smartphones but had an idea for a pretty easy app I think would sell or download like hotcakes. Have a send my GPS cordinates by TXT message. So you could be talking to a friend and want to tell him where you are. Hit the button and your GPS would take a location reading and then txt it to your friend. Then if he had the app. He could click it and it would automatically launch google maps and get his GPS coridinates and route directions. Just seems like something that should be a common function with new phones that is not. Hope someone makes it.
thing has GARMIN Mobiles!
i have an application that send gps coordinates at intervals through sms to a specific contact. the good thing about it is it does not run in the background. it send your gps coordinates then exits. after the specified time interval, it restarts and do the thing all over again.
as for the recipient side, as long as the sms received is in a correct format, and google maps is installed in his/her phone, when he/she clicks ok the sms message link, it will automatically open google maps and go to the specified location.

Is there an app available that lets you send a txt or phonecall
to someone, and know where they are in the country? Maybe a
location on google maps or something?
This would be cool.
hmm
or illegal..
Latitude
If your sending a text why not just ask them?
Instead of using a text why not use Latitude on google maps?
OK - yr friends need this on their phone but there are loads of GPS tracking solutions available.

It works, but the negative thing about it is,... it sucks away all you're battary life,...
and what u said,... you're friends need it,... but this also won't work when 1 of you're friends dont has a phone with NO google maps
anyway,... It's fun to see though!
good luck!
Cheap Sat Nav
One solution is to have Navmii, it's sat nav software £45 ish but it has a built in function to send a text to obtain your friends location using Geofriend, there is a small flaw though, your friend also needs the software on thier mobile, however then sat nav will then place your friends location on the map and give you directions to meet them, quite cool.
They provide software for PDA, iphone and sybian devices not bad software compared with the cost of Tomtom 7
Works fine on my Touch HD

My wife and I both now have WM phones (mine is a Tilt 2, hers a Pure) and we don't want to spend money on text messages to each other, since each text message would count twice... once for her receiving and once for me sending. (on a pay per use plan it would be $0.40 each!).
I was looking for other options. Push email is o.k. but often times there can be a minute or more delay, and my early tests of push gmail are not producing any confidence that it would push reliably.
So then I was thinking IM. It looks like IM programs would be battery hogs, and have to stay running in the background, and could easily be accidentally closed. Also, when the phone goes to sleep it seems like they then switch you to "offline".
So am I missing something? What are my sms like, non sms options?
Also does anyone have any small programs that would set up a auto-soft reset on a repeating schedule, it would be great if I could start the morning with a fresh phone. Thanks.

Yes, any non-sms messaging app for your phone would obviously use data (3G or EDGE connection) to communicate, and would need to be left on all the time to be able to receive incoming messages and notify you in real-time...so battery drain would be in direct proportion to that.
The best solution I've ever seen for that is Palringo, a free IM-integrator app that can connect you through most of the common IM networks (yahoo, AIM, Google talk, etc), or just direct through it's own (if I remember correctly)...meaning that as long as you and she both have the palringo client installed, you don't necessarily have to use any of those services to be able to IM each other. It's also free, and I seem to recall that it can be set (but isn't by default) to stay connected even when the phone goes to sleep, but don't quote me on that part.
It would be great if one of these programs had a "listening" service that would run in the background and then notify you of the "call" similar to an email.
I have seen a few online, (my research has just begun) that indicates "push notifications". Sound interesting, the data connection would remain active all the time that does not bother me.
I seem to have lost the setting to switch the "x" button from close to minimize. That would solve the issue with accidental closing the program. It would have to be managed via the task manager.. no biggy.. and then if I can find a soft reset scheduler it would keep the open programs from overwhelming the phone.

it's the other way around. default for winmo is minimize, there is
an htc bundled app called taskman. it's in settings - task manager which is making apps close when you click X
plenty of other apps can change that too
and then if I can find a soft reset scheduler it would keep the open programs from overwhelming the phone.

Not sure how many of us here drive an Audi, but figured I'd give this forum a shot. I posted this question in the car forums, but apparently no one uses Android over there, let alone an Evo. I'm not quite sure if this is a phone specific problem or an Android problem.
So Audi's 3G Multimedia Interface (MMI), uses bluetooth to connect/sync my phone contacts from my phone and displays them on my car's Nav screen. From there I can select names, make calls, etc.
The problem is, I believe that the car is pulling "All Contacts" instead of just "My contacts" from Google. This makes it extremely cumbersome as I have an extra 100 contacts to sift through while I'm driving.
However, my phone itself is setup correctly, as I selected "Only contacts with phone numbers".
I realize Audi's management of phone sync may be different from other car makers, but it may also be the similar. Any ideas?
I'm not sure that there's anything you can do. Mine syncs the entire phonebook also (Audi A4). Sorry to break the bad news.
Yea, that's a bit disheartening. Thanks for the reply though, good to know. Who could we contact to try and get this changed? HTC? Google?

I am working on the same issue - temp solution - download just the contacts you want into a vcard format, then put them on an SD card and sync. It is much cleaner, but only allows 100 contacts. It worked better for me with addresses also for the nav.
I work for a competing automaker as a dealership technician. We run into this problem and many others with our wireless to vehicle integration system. The best workaround for your particular problem would be to swap your contact lists. Backup all of your contacts to Google. Then delete all of the contacts you don't want sent to the car. Then redownload your phone book to the car. Next, restore your contact list from Google. And finally, reupload only the contacts you want Google to store to the Google cloud.
I know its a lot of steps, but it should provide you with the solution you require. One other thing to keep in mind, if you have an automated phonebook download option in your vehicles interface, it should be deactivated. If it isn't, there's the distinct possibility that the next automatic update will pull all the contacts you just eliminated.
Same issue, using SD instead
I don't know if you found a solution. I am facing the exact same issue on Audi MMI with Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I have been searching up and down and found no clean solution. I am using the SD import workaround. I re-paired my phone and denied the phonebook access so MMI can't download from my phone.

I've got a 2012 S4 and just bought the Galaxy S4 (my first android phone, switched from iphone5) and i had the exact same problem. i spent the first two days of ownership of the GS4 googling my heart out trying to figure out WTF.
I have found a permanent solution that works for me but, may not work for you all. reason i say that is, if you rely on google or other accounts to manage your contacts, this will not work for you. the problem is gmail/google, by default any and all emails you send/receive are stored as "contacts" in google. regardless of what settings you have on your phone, when you sync your contacts with audi MMI, it pulls all contacts from both phone and google (possibly other email accounts you have syncing to your phone).
what i did was...
1) go into my google accounts (i have two) and went into the settings and told google that i would "manually add" contacts.
2) i then deleted all contacts from all my google accounts.
3) then i turned contact sync "on" on the phone and synced the phone with google.
4) turned contact sync back off.
the following is within the audi MMI... (the audi MMI does NOT store the contacts synced with your phone, it refreshes the contact list every time it connects to the phone, this is why you cannot access the list immediately after ignition is on).
1) unpaired the phone from MMI.
2) deleted all profiles within the NAME/DIRECTORY menu in MMI (if you get to a point where it asks you for your ID PIN (something along those lines), you will need to enter the last 7 digits of your VIN number.
3) i then repaired the phone, and when the prompt on the phone popped up asking for permission to access contacts, clicked yes and selected to not be prompted again.
after it redownloaded the directory from the phone, only contacts i add to the phone showed up.
WARNING, by deleting the profiles, you will also delete any manually added addresses/locations stored from the MMI as well, i personally can live with this.
Android BT Fix for Audi
Hey there...
New to this forum. Here is a fix for the Phonebook sync for Audi MMI / Android phones. It's an app called Bluetooth Phonebook from the Play store. Download it to your phone and voila...it works.
Hope this helps.

Quick question, do you gate The contact picture to show on The mmi with tour galaxy?
I have been trying to figure out a way to send an address via sms/mms that will do the following:
appear as an address to the reciever
be a clickable link that will open in google maps allowing the reciever to get directions
Is there a way to do this that I am overlooking?

I was thinking about the same thing a few weeks ago. Hopefully someone knows.
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide using XDA App
This is actually done automatically based on the recipient's phone. Test it out yourself. Send yourself a text with an address. When you receive it, you'll be able to click it, and your phone will either automatically search it in Google Maps, or it may ask what you want to do with it, such as store it to a contact etc. This is a per-phone feature though. Many of the Nokia's I use to use had similar features. On our phones, it will also do the same for email addresses, web addresses, and phone numbers that it detects.
Now if you're using a custom rom, this may not happen automatically as it is based on which Messaging app the rom is using. I am using TeamFenix, and after just testing it, it did not recognize the full address, only the ZIP code, and therefore tried dialing the 5 digit number. But I think this did work on the stock messaging app.
But SMS/MMS is pretty limited as it is a strict standard. There are no tags etc that can be added that will be interpreted by a phone differently. That is why it is up the the recipient's phone to simply have it built in to recognize different address and phone number types.
very helpful reply. I found a way to attach a map point, but its not very exact in that it will not let me enter where i want the map point to be. I will figure something out, this phone has a lot of features and I am sure this is one of them.
Its funny you mention that. My friend sent me his address this weekend via sms and included a google maps link and it worked flawlessly, was able to "click" it and it launched maps right to his address. Not sure if me manually put the link in the sms or if the phone did it...
When I charge my new MotoZ2force, all of the shortcut names on my home page are changed from Susie, Mike, etc. to Contact, Contact, Contact. If I restart or power off my phone and come back on, it will usually "re-populate" with the correct names, Susie, Mike, etc. When I took it back 6 days after purchase, it did the same thing at the store and they said, "Hey, that's weird." So they exchanged it for a new one. And the same thing happened AT THE STORE. They said it's obviously a software glitch and Motorola is aware of it and will eventually fix it.
Not impressed yet. Anyone else experiencing that and have a suggestion? I'm old and not brilliant, but can see a problem. Thank you. George (This is my first time on such a chat community as this). Thanks.

Quick answer is it's just a sync issue. On the average setup, contacts are stored, maintained, and synced with your google account/service provider and/or both. These are synced at regular intervals with their associated storage service. Sync is controlled by many factors; battery life, wifi/data availability, schedules, etc. When you create the shortcuts it's a then and now call for that contact info, so you see it. Whenever the screen refreshes, the data might not be repopulated because the actual call for the data hasn't been made, so you just see contact. Basically it's just a case of online/offline viewing. If you were to save your contacts on your sim (local) then you should be able to see the contact anytime. Whenever you restart your phone the reason you see the contact is because all the info was called for as the services started.
Hope that helps, not really a problem per se, just the difference between online/offline storage.
