I have this on my phone plan. Do you think it's worth it to keep it? Also I've rooted my phone, will this matter?
It's a $500 phone, insurance will cost you $84/year your choice, I'm keeping it though.

Depends entirely on if you will end up utilizing it. Genetally speaking it's a rip off. Do you know what the deductable is? It's a lot. For the average chance, burning cash.

I do not know the deductible. The insurance just carried over from my previous phone. If I ever break it and have to use the insurance to replace it, do you think it will matter that I rooted it? Because if it does, then obviously I'll cancel it
Sent from my EVOot using XDA App
If you break the phone and its replaced by the insurance company its $100. I don't think it really matters if its rooted or not if you get it replaced by the insurance. If you go to the sprint store for them to fix i think it would matter if its rooted.

Lemme put it to you like this:
New EVO: $500
Insurance (deposit and all that): $7 per month ($87 annually)
Insurance deductible: $100
So if you brick your phone, it's lost/stolen, smashed, what have you, after 12 months, it will cost you $187 to replace it. That's $313 less than retail.
Even if you replace your phone after two years, (and let's say the cost of the EVO drops from $500 to $400, and you don't want to renew your contract and thus get a new phone quite yet), it will still cost less ($274, therefore $126 less than retail).
And yes, you can get your phone replaced if you brick it. How? Just go to Sprint, tell them that you lost your phone or that it was stolen. Congrats, you now have a spare battery, charger, and Micro SD card!
Seriously, it's a good deal as far as I'm concerned, just talking numbers.

If you want to talk numbers, you must consider the odds of breaking the phone. Its not guaranteed that you will break the phone. If you have say 4 phones(family plan) and they all have insurance. Then Your family end up breaking one of the phones in this 2 year period. Total cost? 4 phones x 24 months x $7 tep charge + $100 deduct = $772. Cost of retail? $499 or so. In this scenario, insurance isn't worth it. If however, 2 of the 4 phones break, the cost is then $872...getting closer to that mark...

It boils down to Sprint being able to take advantage of the aggregate combined with a general misunderstanding of statistics. For a given year, the question boils down to "do yoy have a greater than 25% chance of breaking your phone."

someone mentioned that they got their EVO added to their renters insurance.
Helped Out My Son
Well, my son dropped his EVO two weeks after getting it. The screen shattered and it was replaced for the $100 deductible. So, with three EVOs on our plan we just need another break/loss in the next couple of years to be in the money.
If I was a betting man, I would bet that my Offensive Lineman will sometime break his pone in the next two years, so for us it is helpful. It all depends (as stated earlier) on the statistics. Insurance is all about shared risk ... thanks for sharing his risk if you participate

Haha, I like that.
I myself like having Sprint's insurance for the sole fact of if I ever do really damage my phone or drop it in water, etc. I can get a new one for the 100, and who doesn't like a bright new shiny phone. ... And lets say i just damage everything but the screen, i would remove my old scree to have as a backup. Or maybe even sell.
Don't forget they may give you a refurbished phone.

Also account for 'being able to sleep at night'. If having insurance makes you sleep easier at night, then go for it.

For me, I'm the only person on my plan, and I work Facilities and Maintenance, meaning I'm constantly running around inside, around, and on top of a building, around heavy machinery, crawling through a plenum, and so on. The chance of me breaking or dropping my phone? Pretty high. And considering that it's not the best-paying job around, having insurance just seemed like the smartest move.

ok so if we say we "lost" our phone and get a new one for $100 from insurance, will the "lost" one still be a functional phone to connect to wifi n stuff or do they remote auto kill it? If they do auto kill, is there anyway to prevent them from doing so?

I wanted to start this thread as sort of an informative type of thread. I know there will be other people wondering the same thing. I haven't had t-mobile in years and only dealt with sprint Asurion insurance.
I have been offered t-mobile insurance and I'm not really sure if it would be worth getting it. There were three options given and I wanted to get some insight from some customers that have gone through the insurance in the past. I am leaning towards the middle one that I think was 4.79.
Is this a good insurance to have or should I get the higher priced one that extends the warranty to two years?
Are there any issues over the phone when trying to get a replacement due to software or hardware issues?
How are the refurbs that are sent as replacement?
Here are the two options

if they cover screen replacement or water damage, it's a decent protection, if you are ... accident prone like me
i used to take those insurance, when i was in school and couldn't afford a new device very often.
once i started getting better jobs, i stopped taking those, as i was switching from phone to phone before i can even crack the old phone

Thats the thing i dont like the no loss of theft. but that deductible is killer. i wonder if there is a way to sweet talk them. and i do understand its a deterrent to prevent people from breaking there phone to get the updated hardware as they make revisions or lie and say they lost the phone so they can get a dev phone.

Baaed on the answers, I'm thinking that going the insurance route is the best option. This phone feels fragile so I'm going to cover my butt. I think the 4.79 insurance will do. Plus I can cancel at any time which makes It a better deal. I lobe this phone but I know from past experiences that I will probably keep it less than a year.

i got it as well. i would rather pay a little extra so im not always worried about the phone. better to have it and not need then to need and not have. replace the phone once and its payed for its self.
ive had/have premium asurion insurance thru tmobile. they cover 3 phones in a 12 month period. i know because ive lost 4 phones already and was left with no choice but to buy the sgs2 lol.
the deductible is what kills you. for any smart phone whether its damaged, lost or stolen, you have to pay 130.00 PERIOD and that includes free overnight shipping. if you order your new phone monday morning you will have it by tuesday afternoon. theres no sweet talking or getting yourself out of that deductible EVER. if your a clutz like me the insurance is worth it. 130 beats 500 any day.
asurion covers stolen, lost, theft, water damage, etc. i guess they dont really care what your excuse is for whatever happened to your phone because your getting ass raped with a deductible. either way i WOULD recommend them. its a small price to pay and believe if you ever do lose your phone you will be more than thankful that you had insurance on it
They are both worth it. DO NOT go with tie protection plan. They never keep up their end. It's pointless and it's money down the drain. With T-Mobile insurance and warranty... you get a phone... you damage it... there is a deductible. If it's the phone itself, the warranty covers it. Better to pay the deductible then retail of the phone. The phones aren't getting cheaper. You have to think MSRP.
I've been selling phones for dealers and corp for 5+ years. Insurance is a double edged sword. Yes it costs more monthly, yes it adds up and yes there is a deductible. So it's a gamble. Is it worth it? Yes. Is it worth it if nothing goes wrong with the phone? No. But that's the gamble.
Warranty... Personally I'll pass. I don't keep phones past the first year. The phone is covered by manufacturer warranty and I believe the carrier will handle the swap for you. You're paying for the second year in contract for the warranty part... So you pay it the first year when it's covered anyway.
Insurance covers everything... then there is a deductible. Anything happens to the phone, you make a claim and get one the next day. Handled by Asurion.
If you add up the monthly charge for insurance alone + the deductible... you're looking at about $250. If nothing happens and you keep your phone, then you paid insurance for nothing. But that's just insurance... that's how insurance works. If you break it, lose it or get it wet within the first couple months... pay the deductible and get a new one... was insurance worth it? Yes.
Next year... let's say something happens... you've been paying on insurance, pay the deductible. Could you maybe have bought the phone from someone else and saved a little coin? Yes.
It's basically good to have insurance if something happens in the first few months. I recommend putting it on at first and maybe ween yourself off it. But some of you are like me...
Am I too cheap to pay for insurance? Yes.
Will I get insurance? Probably for the first couple months.
Do I have the phone for 6+ months? No.
If I don't have insurance, am I willing to drop $500+ on the latest phone? Sure. I guess I have to.

Deductibles rising to $150 and $200 depending on SRP.
Now that's a bunch of bull honkey!
i've always wondered what bull honkey... was... is....
Kinda meh. For the strain it eases on my nerves, I'll pay the dollar or two.
Well it will be becoming $132/yr + $150-$200 deductible to insure a device that probably costs $350-$450 street value with a refurb replacement.
If you have a high-end device, after 2yrs you would have paid $264 (+$200 if you had a stolen/lost/water damaged unit)
I guess if you "lose" 3 devices per year (which I believe is their "limit") it is worth it.
The $3 per month increase is not the end of the world, but doubling the deductible is excessive I think. If you're accident prone or absent minded it may be worth it, but I probably won't be adding TEP on my next device, and maybe opt for an extended warranty like Squaretrade instead, depending on the pricing.
Meh, not much.
Pay to play. Just gotta be a bit more extra careful with your device I suppose.
I think if you have tep on your phone now and haven't used it more than one time ...the price should not increase ...but just my thoughts

I agree, have used it 0 times in ever since I came on to sprint almost 2 years now on two lines.
In god-knows-how-long I've had "the insurance"--for either as long as it's been available or since I got to Sprint way over a decade ago...whichever is shorter) I've never used it once....I do think this is bullsh!t. Up the deductible or up the premium but don't crank 'em both up.
It's a money machine for them as a vast majority of all people who have the insurance never use it. Sure, that's how insurance works and that's also offset by the expenses of the people that use it all the time, but, not getting into accidents encourages my insurance company to give me lower rates since I'm a lower risk. I'm clearly a statistically lower risk for repeated use of TEP but I get screwed just the same as someone who destroys every phone they touch....and I know some of those people. Always have a new phone and a story about the ending of the last one.
inb4 someone scapegoats people who tether or use an "excessive amount" of an unlimited service.
Honestly getting tired of paying others way. Have it just in case and have never needed to file a claim.
Lost Premier, now higher deductible. I may ruffle feathers but can't help but wonder if those abusing by claiming an ota bricked them, or other nonsense had any part in this.
Either way I will just drop it. Not paying an inflated premium when I have never used it, abused it. Every other insurance rewards those that are careful (or lucky).

IMO TEP wasn't worth it to begin with.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Just to clear a little air here, the TEP will be going up for any LTE device from galaxy nexus forward. However, it only applies to phones that have a MSRP of 549.99 or greater. Also, any current devices in our lineup are not affected.
As far as the worth of it, one statistic they've pointed out to us in order to address....objections...is that it would take 3 years of paying TEP and one insurance deductible to match the MSRP...
So for many of us who don't keep phones for that long, the value is still definitely there.
EDIT: never mind, saw that engadget has a screenshot of our Playbook which explains it.
Most of this is probably due to Asurion, not Sprint. Not to mention these things will always get increasingly expensive. Protection plans have been raising in cost and deductible since they were introduced.
What interests me is that I've heard rumblings of replacing Asurion with another provider. Nothing concrete you can quote me on...but it wouldn't surprise me. Their quality is terrible, and I'm willing to bet that a lot of Asurion's increasing costs are directly attributable to having to remanufacture devices multiple times.
Just my opinions.

Well I don't really mind because I normall use TEP on any new phone for only 6 months. After that it doesn't make much sense for me because there is probably a new phone out.
I will keep paying it on my two lines because Sprint has always gone the extra mile for me. If they hadn't, I wouldn't have this phone and I would still be paying the $69.99 a month for the 3g USB internet plug in. ETF fees waived, line reset, replaced my Nexus with a new one without me having to use insurance.. I figure I have been taken care of so I don't have any room to complain but I know not everyone has been as fortunate

This is the number 1 reason I went with Sprint's TEP.
Worst case, I pay $150 for a new phone, and if it an actual hardware issue (not water or something "I" did) Sprint replaces it for free.
I got a replacement ET4G (bad GPS), and 2 replacement Samsung Moments (Bad USB Ports) all for free. Also got a replacement moment when it was less than 2 months old (stolen) for $100.
IMO, if you don't have some sort of insurance on your phone, you're nuts.
over two years with insurance if you file a claim, you will spend $414. if you break your phone without insurance the phone will cost $549.
personally, i have two children under three years old that throw objects very well. that includes cell phones laying around, so i have insurance on it
if you break your phone without insurance the phone will cost $549.
YOu're forgetting phone prices come down substantially after the first 6 months...
Personally I have only needed insurance once... paid 150 deductible for what would have cost me at most $200 to buy off ebay/craigslist for the same 'used' phone. Could have saved myself the year of premiums.
Didn't buy the insurance on the S3...remember manufacturer defects are still covered under it's warranty as well. (Though I don't recall how long that is just now... 90 day, or 1 yr).

Personnal preference is squaretrade. Wait for a 30% discount and it will be $95 for two years of coverage
Insurance, isnt always for you. its a given that youll be babying your phone. it covers the world around you. Sprint - Asurion TEP bills your cellphone to your account at your request. the only caveat is that its 150 dollar every claim deductable. im replacing my galaxy s3 in an insurance claim and since its so new its still currently on backorder. but they say itll take 5-7 business days. normally if you get your claim in before 10pm you get a new device out within 24 hours. its quite nice when it works as it should.
I've been with T-Mobile insurance, Asurion since the G1. I'm planning on getting the Nexus 4 (THIS IS NOT A NEXUS 4 THREAD DO NOT TURN IT INTO ONE!!!!) should I drop the T-Mobile insurance and go with a different company... Options I have looked up are SquareTrade & Ensquared. If you know of another company I'm all ears. Thanks.
Ive heard that you can even insure it through some companies like state farm or whatever. Dont quote me on it, someone told me that a while back but I never looked into it. If they do id imagine its an addon type thing....

Will T-Mobile/Asurion still ensure my phone if its a nexus device that I do not purchase through T-Mobile?

Dont rely only on me, but I am pretty sure they will, so long as you are on a monthly plan, not prepaid. Verify that though!
I have heard a few times that using Asurion is a bit more expensive than other options, just fyi. It is convenient though.
Ya I'm going to ask a dude I know that works for them tomorrow. It is cheaper with the other companies with a cheaper deductible it seems, well I'll see what he says and go from there.

Yeah but I do believe it has to be a Tmobile device. I called a while ago because I had insurance but the S3 wasn't purchased on my account. They assured me as long as it's a tmobile device you'll be covered.

I use "I take extreme care for my devices and know how to fix them should something happen to them insurance" for all insurance companies rip you off. I'll tell you my story with my HTC touch pro 2 that I had gotten replaced via insurance.....
(Short version)
Phone flew down steps landed on concrete floor. Turned into confetti.
Called asurion. 100 bucks for deductible. After paying over 200 in monthly bills.(could have bought a brand new one from eBay for 150 at the time, didn't realize this till after I replaced it)
Got replacement, didn't work. Got second replacement. Still didn't work. Got third replacement(was extremely pissed by now) and ripped apart both 2nd replacement and 3rd and combined all the good parts to make a good phone.
And ever since then, I will never waste my money on insurance for my phone. It's nothing but a waste of money.

Ya I understand all that lol. But I go out and camp, fish, go boating, drink, and house parties and what not (immature 23 year old) so I've used my insurance a few times; once with my G1 (stolen) twice with my MyTouch 3G (stolen, and then dropped which caused a weird ear piece sound while on call). So I like insurance and haven't been screwed over. Never had any issues with my G2X or the S3 so I've grown up a little and love my phones more now, haha.
I was going to ask the same thing but given that you asked it already, I'd like to see other responses. So far I've only had SquareTrade Warranty on multiple devices. I still haven't had to file a claim but the thing that I like is if I sell one of my devices, I can cancel my plan and get a prorated refund. I'm not sure if other companies do that.
I recently got my Samsung Galaxy S3 and haven't made a decision on what company to choose. Ensquared is cheaper and they claim to cover theft and accidental, all for $59 for 1 year. If anybody has dealt with them, can you please give us some insight?
which insurance do you guys recommend for my new note 2 in case it gets stolen or lost?
also i got my daughter an iphone 5(i couldn't convince her to get the s3 instead), so i need insurance for it as well in case it is lost or stolen.
Thanks
I use Sprint's TEP. It's pretty good.... Expensive than others.

best insurance I found is worth ave group.
with coupon codes its $66.20 a year for $2000 in coverage unlimited usage and $25 deductible.
Covers damage and theft but not loss then again if its lost IT IS stolen so file a police report.
sprints TEP is $11 a month in other words $132 a year AND the deductible is $200 !!! and IIRC you can only use it once a year (I could be wrong on that)
I think worth without coupon code is $75 a year or something like that. way way cheaper and better than sprints tep and it covers all your toys (I have all my phones my laptop and my camera's on it)
just sign up for the student plan.
Squaretrade
I have had no problems with squaretrade
their quick also much cheaper the Sprint TEP

i thought squaretrade doesn't cover lost or stolen?
Sprint total protection.
Applies gps to your phone if lost, can track from your pc and they give you a new phone if broken.
Extra 8 bucks a month.

It is $11 for the note 2...and the gps tracking is optional. If you don't set it up before hand it won't work. Not to mention most stolen phones are either imediately turned off or hard reset. (though I have talked to a few people that have found their phone this way)

your right sorry
they do not
Sprints coverage has 2 parts. One is insurance and the other is tep. The insurance is from asurion, you pay 200 and they ship you a new phone and you get it by the next business day. The tep which is total equipment protection is used whenever you have a problem with your phone that isn't covered under warranty anymore. For example if your speaker goes out they will fix it for free or if like me your screen starts messing up they will get you a whole new phone. If not for that then I would have to take the Samsung warranty and they ask that you mail it to them, wait while they fix it and then they ship it back. It can take from 2 to 3 weeks. Sprint will still check your phone but fixing it will cost 35 or more I believe. I think its 8 for insurance and 5 for tep, but I believe the insurance used to be 6. Not quite sure about any of this as it is just off the top of my head. I do know that the 11 or 13 package has 2 parts.
I have best buy insurance. $169 one time charge (you can opt for monthly) and no deductible ever.
Guaranteed 5 day turn around, they give you a loaner in the meantime.
I don't think they cover theft, perhaps if you have a police report.

best buy does not cover lost or stolen
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Best buy covers absolutely everything except lost or stolen. Unlimited claims and no deductible! They order you a new phone and give you a loaner If you need one. As far as lost or stolen, if you have their geek squad, there is a free app called locked And found that tracks where your phone is and takes pictures of what it sees with the front facing camera (a thiefs face maybe?) and reports to a website only you have access to.
For those who have the protection plan get a hold of your gsp# off your receipt because the app asks for it, or call best buy mobile.

The best buy program is junk. I had it and tried to get it fixed while traveling. First of all the replacement store would only give me a loner if I was able to return it to the same store. Now someone traveling like I was is screwed plus the loner was any phone not the same phone. The second issue was they said my phone wasn't broke enough because my problem was intermittent. They actually told me to go back to the parking and break the screen then they would replace it.

Not trying to be a argumentative but I don't think your complaints are valid.
1) I understand requiring you to return to the same store is not as convenient as possible... but creating the infrastructure to manage inter-store returns for loaner require technology investments which would surely increase the cost of insurance. Besides, most insurance programs don't even have this feature. It's inconvenient for travelers but making accomodations for such cases may not necessarily be worth the investment.
Also, loaners are temporary. To match your phone... and everyone else's, best buy must have at least one of every phone ever, for each store. (At least within the last two years). Do you expect them to open a new box everytime they dont have a matching loaner availabe?...assuming they even have them in stock?
As per your second complaint I don't know what the problem was, but bb doesn't automatically do replacements. .. instead will do repairs on fixable problems. Correct me but I believe that's what happened. They offered to do a repair but you wanted a replacement.
I think the only thing you can criticize bb for is they were asking you to commit insurance fraud.
swyped all these spelling errors from my galaxy note 2

its not even insurance. its a protection plan. similar, but not the same thing. i dont know if you can call it insurance fraud unless it is underwritten by an indemnity company.
that being said, you are correct, sir.
Sprint TEP + Kaspersky One, insurance and the ability to track, lock and wipe your phone.
You can also take pictures of the person using it.
It's win....
I dumped sprint insurance after having it on multiple phones for over 8 years. Monthly charge and deductible for the note were way too high for me. I switched to ensquared (or something like that)
