Hi,
Once you have chosen which rom and radio you want. You need to transfer them to your Sim card in the sdcard/ root directory.
Once that is done, turn off your phone, and turn on while holding down " Vol down" and power.
You will then get into the fastboot screen.
Here you use the vol up and down to select recovery and the power button to select.
Once recover boots us you use the optical pad to control and select.
Here you choose install from ZIP
Then you choose the Rom you previously copied onto your SD and run, after the rom has finished installing, then do the radio.
After you hav finished reboot the phone, but reboot into recovery and and select Wipe.. after wipe has finished. Reboot and your ready to go.
Any Questions?
Whats the worst there can happen if you miss a step or reboot in normal mode... So what is the worst case scenario apart of failed hardware during this procedure.

flashing a rom is the same as flashing a radio or a kernel
the recovery will tell the difference
install it like you would a rom
note that a radio takes a long time to boot for the first time, it will reboot several times by itself taking about a minute, DO NOT touch the phone or you might brick it.
put any ROM/radio/kernel on your sdcard
go into recovery or use rom manager
install zip from sdcard
done.

also when going into nandroid to restore it says
"sd-ext.img not found skipping restore of /sd-ext."
I had a similar issue when I first flashed a ROM. What version of what recovery are you using? Is it clockworkmod or RA? You will probably need to flash a new PC36IMG.zip file to get it back up and running. I used the unrooted version found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Then I re-rooted with unrevoked, and proceeded to reflash the ROM. If you are using clockworkmod, you need to change to RA, and if you are using an older version of RA you need to update. Let me know what you're using, and I'll try to help.

yes im using clockworkmod and how can i sync my phone with my comp to flash the pc36img.zip .?
You'll have to do it while in recovery. Pull the battery on the phone, and put it back in. Hold donw the volume down button on the side while you hold down the power button. This will boot the phone into the bootloader. After a few seconds it will scan for some files, just ignore that. Once it scans, you can move your sleection by using the volume down button. Move your selection to recovery, and push the power button to select it. Then you'll see the recovery screen come up. In one of the menus there is a selection for mass storage, or something like that. When you toggle that on, you can use your phone like a disk drive, and just drop the PC36IMG.zip file in the folder.
ok fter i do that what should i do
again thank you so much for your help
in clockwork recovery you will have
-reboot system now
-apply sdcard:update.zip
-wipe data/ factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-install zip from sdcard
-nandroid
-partition menu
- advanced
**You want to select partition menu**
Partition menu gives you thes options:
mount/data
unmount/ cache
mount/ sdcard
format system'format data
format cache
format boot
mount USB storage
**Now plug your phone into your computer and select mount USB Storage**
ok so in the exact order after i put the file on my sd card
In order to install the update, follow the steps below. This will erase everything you had stored in your phone, and set it back to how it was when you got it from the factory. Once you drop the new PC36IMG.zip file onto the phone, shut the phone off. If there's no menu option, then pull the battery. Then power the phone into bootloader again. It should scan for the same files, and this time find the one you put in there. When this happens a blue bar will show up on the right side. When the bar finishes, it will ask if you want to update with the new file. Say yes, and let it finish. It will probably restart once during the update, so don't freak. When it's all done it will ask if you want to reboot. Say yes. Now it will be back to stock. If you want to try to flash again, re-root using enrevoked. When that's done, isntall ROM Manager from the market. When that's installed, open it. At the bottom of the screen should be a selection for flash an alternate recovery (Amon RA), if it's higher than version 1.8, then install it and you're good to go. Clockworkmod has a lot of issues.
Did it work out for you?
yes thank you so much I got my phone up and running

I dowloaded ROM Manager from the market and used the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery option to upgrade to the latest verion of CWM.
From the ROM Manager application it says the current verion is 3.0.0.8 but when I reboot into recovery the phone still says v2.5.1.2. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

in ROM manager hit Menu >> Settings and check the box for Erase Recovery. This will erase your current recovery before flashing the new one to give you a clean flash.
Then just hit Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. It should attempt to flash it again.
Okay I did that and it didn't work so I cleared the download cache from the menu setting and tried again. It appeard to work but when I reboot into recovery my phone still says it is on v.2.5.1.2
Maybe this is a sign I should just leave my phone alone for a while. lol
Just manually flash it. ROM Manager was doing that to me too. I hate using ROM Manager... lol. I flash stuff manually myself because then I know is going on.

For AMOLED: use 3.0.0.7 (some have reported problems with 3.0.0.8 on AMOLED).
For SLCD: use 3.0.0.8
Rename the zip you download to "PB31IMG" (without quotes) and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot to HBoot and flash the update when prompted (by pressing Vol Up).
Don't forget to delete the zip after it successfully updates. To add onto CarngeX, the zip should be named: PB31IMG.zip
Okay thanks. I had never even tried ROM Manager for anything else. I always load ROM's manually but I thought it would be way more complicated to update than you showed me. It's all good now. Thanks again.

Reason I just said "name it to PB31IMG" is because a lot of times people have file extensions hidden, and they end up naming it to "PB31IMG.zip.zip" and it causes more problems lol.

I'm just curious, I've updated my cwm to 3.0.0.7 already through rom manager, but I had previous tried doing it like this through recovery using a .zip. When it prompts for the update, is it just passive? Like you enter hboot and then wait until it asks if you want to upgrade?

When you boot to HBoot, it should check for a PB31IMG.zip file on your card. If it finds one, it'll ask if you would like to update or not.

I guess I didn't package it right since I would see it scan for it (quickly, so I couldn't see what it was saying exactly), but it didn't offer me any option to update afterwards. Thanks.
Then it's probably not named correctly (needs to be exactly PB31IMG.zip, check for hidden extensions), or your SD card isn't formatted to fat32.

Do you mean you can't install clockworkmod, or that you're having trouble using it to flash the rom? To install Clockworkmod, just use this app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
Run the app and install custom recovery, then reboot the phone. The first time you reboot, the custom BootMenu will display. Use the volume buttons to navigate the menu and the power button to select an option. Select Boot > Set Default > Normal > Go Back > Reboot System. After the phone has fully booted up, power it off and reboot again. If the custom recovery installed properly, a blue LED on the phone should briefly light up each time the phone reboots (while the Motorola logo is being displayed).
To use the recovery, turn off USB debugging on the phone (Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging), then power off the phone. Press the power button to turn the phone on again, and as soon as the blue LED lights up, press the volume down button. The custom BootMenu will display. Select Recovery > Custom Recovery.
Thanks it makes more sense now i'll give it ago tonight. Very much appreciated
Glad I could help. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Root your DEFY and Install BOOTMENU - CWM (2ndInit-Installer 2.0.apk - install 1.0.7) or use this SndInitDefy_2.0.apk

2. REBOOT
3. run 2nd-init (voldown on blue LED)
4. Go to "Recovery"
5. Go to "Latest or Stable or Custom Recovery"
6. "wipe data and cache"
7. Go to "Backup and Restore"
8. Go to "Advance Restore"
9. Select "MS2Ginger3.0"
Once i select Ms2Ginger3.0 its coming up with :
Clockworkmod recovery v2.5.1.8
Checking MD5 sums...
MD5 Mismatch!
Then nothing else. Ive had a look on the forums but i cant find a solution. Ive formatted the SD card as fat32. Ive re-downloaded the file. Do I need to do something else before with my factory 2.2 defy?
Any help would be great
Cheers

Did you unzip the "MS2Ginger3.0-RTM.zip" file? You have to unzip that file and put the "nandroid.md5" and "system.ext3.tar" files on your SD card in clockworkmod/backup/MS2Ginger. (The "MS2Ginger-Greenbread.zip" file should NOT be unzipped, however, and should be in the root of the SD card.)
If you did that correctly and you're still getting an MD5 mismatch error, try checking the MD5 sum yourself using an app like AFV (Android File Verifier), which is available free on the android market. (Open AFV and browse to the md5sum file, long-press it, and select “md5sum –c Type Check”.) Does AFV show a mismatch too?
ahh i didnt unzip. I dont do that with the hd2
Next step... Sorry I feel like a complete n00bie
All im getting now is system.img not found skipping restore of /system/.
Both files nandroid.md5" and "system.ext3.tar are in the folder....
Thank you

Yeah, that might be the problem. Download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=787176&d=1321653982
Don't unzip it; just put it on the root of your SD card. Then boot into custom recovery, select Install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard, and install it. That will update your recovery to the latest version.
hi
i already unlock the bootloader, install custom recovery TWRP, and done a backup
i also copy my backup to PC
now i'm confuse
- i need to root the phone or can i just flash the new room?
- if i need to root the phone i found an italian guide on 4.0 and attach file, can i use that? i have 4.1.1 on mine now
i'm not interested to have HTC stock with root but what i want is to install MIUI ROM
this is the only guide i found in english that explains how to install the rom
external link (i can't post it) miuiandroid.com/community/threads/installing-the-htc-one-x-required-s-on-steps.16592/
what i understand is:
- boot my device power + menu down, to see the FASTBOOT USB i have to select FASTBOOT
- flash the boot.img
- press the power button once (HBOOT i guess), click volume down, highlight recovery & press power
- Flash the downloaded ROM via recovery normally and it followup at this link
external link (i can't post it) miuiandroid.com/community/threads/how-to-update-upgrade-miui.15424/
i need to copy the img rom in SD ROOT before starting with all this process
- now i need to Wipe data/factory reset, Cache Wipe & Dalvik Cache Wipe in all tutorial i found this is done with clockworkmod
in TWRP under menu WIPE i guess are System, Cache, Dalvik buttons
after that i'm note sure if i need to flash italian language, if i don't need and i can just download it later i tihink is not a big deal
unless is all in chinese
is the metod correct?
do i have to copy ROM file in .zip format as i download?
here where i found ROM
from official site grey button miui.com/download-7.html
OR
from UK web site miuiandroid.com/community/threads/3-4-28.20232/
the boot.img is here
point 3 miuiandroid.com/community/threads/installing-the-htc-one-x-required-s-on-steps.16592/
i'm not sure if would be better to use clockworkmod, since most tutorials use that..
thanks
Doesn't matter which recovery you use. Yes just place the zip file on your sd card. Flash boot.img as you already said. Perform a full wipe and then flash the Rom zip. Reboot and its done.
The Roms are pre-rooted so you dont need to worry about that. Italian language should be included i guess.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Heres what i do :
1) Put Rom.zip on SD card
2) Put boot.img in fastboot folder
3) fastboot erase cache
4) fastboot flash boot boot.img
5) fastboot erase cache
6) Reboot into recovery
7) Full wipe (except sd card)
8) Install rom
9) Enjoy new rom

i did my first mess but fortunally i could restore since i had copy the backup on my mac too
i don't know what went wrong but this is what happened:
- i did how was told before, but actually i download boot.img and rom from 2 different sites
- after reboot it didn't move from first screena waited for 15 minutes almost, so i did reboot in recovery tri to wipe but nothing happened
- so i decide to restore... but it did boot even if it was successful
- i thought that if i flashed the boot.img first time i may need to do it again, i found boot.emmc.win, rename it to boot.img, flash it and then i restored successfully
:victory:
now, to try a different rom i need to restore (maybe is safer)? can i copy the rom from recovery or fastboot?
what can it be wrong with my miui rom? could it be boot.img and rom file mismatch? can't find where to download both

i would try a different rom for now, viperx perhaps. and the boot image is in the rom zip, extract the boot img from the rom and put it in your fastboot folder then copy the rom to your sdcard. once you have done that, fastboot erase cache, flash the boot image, fastboot erase cache again, then back into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik just to be sure then use recovery to flash the rom and hey presto. all of the above is assuming you have the one x international tegra 3
I have htc one x european terga 3, as far as I know mini is only for tegra 3
what you describe is exactly what I did:
- I leave the rom zip ad it is, I didn't remove boot.imf that I extract, correct?
- when I flash I hit hoot fastboot, connect USB and fastboot change in fastboot USB, to go back I select Hboot and and hit power, prom there recovery
- I did unlock bootloader but did not get rooted my phone, could it be that?

Hey guys im trying to root my device so i can install some lightweight custom roms. Ive been following this guide i found online
http://androidcritics.com/how-to-root-and-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-galaxy-s3-i747/
I basically did this
Installing Clockwork Recovery Mod
Find the recovery image file which is clockworkmod.tar
On your Samsung Galaxy S3 I747, press and hold down the volume down, power, and home buttons
Once your at the warning screen, press volume up to accept
Launch the Odin program from your computer
In Odin, find the PDA tab and click it
Find the clockworkmod.tar.md5 file in the unzipped recovery image file
Press start to begin flashing the recovery mod
BE PATIENT! and wait until your device reboots
Once your device has fully rebooted, you can start installing root
It loaded on the phone fine. I then did this
Installing Root
Transfer the root.zip file onto your phone from your computer
Make sure you connect your s3 to your computer and find the root zip file and put it in your downloads folder.
Enter clockwork recover mod by holding down the volume up, power, and home buttons
Navigate by using the volume buttons to Install Zip > Choose Zip from Internal SD card > Navigate to the downloads folder> Select
Be Patient! and wait until your device is finished
Once the process is finished, you can select Reboot
Once your device has rebooted, launch the Google Play Store app
Search “SuperuserSU” and select the first app that shows in the search results
Install this app
Once it has finished installing, your done!
The only problem is I cant navigate to the option "install zip from internal sd card" I simply dont have though's options here is what I have when hold volume up reset and home
"reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage (which i dont have)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
When i hit apply update from ADB it says "now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"...
Im wondering if the original flash didnt go thru? Why dont I have the options that I should?
Any help would mean the world trying to get this puppy up asap!
regards,
Eddy

Any help would mean the world trying to get this puppy up asap!
regards,
Eddy

Sounds like the root method you are using is just way to complicated. Follow this one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 it has prerooted firmwares that you just install with odin and you are done (cwm included). Just make sure you grab the right firmware for your carrier.
If I have helped you out, slap that thanks button.

Beauty I think its flashing the rogers rom to my phone from there Im good to load other roms using this odin tool? (or is it rom manager?)
also what is this clockwork mod ? I might as well go into play store and get both rom manager and clockwork?
- eddy
So After I flashed the new rom to my phone i left it plugged in and it restarted. Android loader popped on and now it says android is upgrading... starting apps. Its been like this for over a half an hour... what do i do??? helpppp dont really want to reset it but it is bricked? or do i have to reload ?
update:
held the restart button down it restarted bit is still stuck on starting apps.
update two:
held vol down home and reset tried to reload the rogers rom onto the phone and now it stops at samsung load screen. Do i have to reload the carrier that came with the phone? I cant quite remember what the original carrier was.
UPDATE THREE:
I as able to boot back into the phone but...nothing changed? i ended up wiping the phones data in settings because its too full as it is. I downloaded root checker and it said access was denied ? That makes its not rooted after all... I followed the directions seems that they didnt take? Any clues?

Okay buddy looks like you need to learn some basic android 101
You are definitely not ready to root or do anything til you learn this stuff...
Okay, so first is recoveries. Basically recoveries are a bit of software that let's you flash ROMs, kernels, and whatever else to your phone. When you hold volume up and power when your phone is off, you boot to recovery. Now basically recoveries are necessary because when you are flashing a new ROM it essentially deletes the android system from your phone first so this is a way of your phone still working between flashes.
Clockworkmod is a custom recovery with a lot of features meant for flashing ROMs. There are competitors such as TWRP (team win recovery project) but clockworkmod is a great starter. Use videos or tutorials on how to use it before you flash your first ROM. I can not stress how often you need to read read and read some more.
Okay so rooting your phone. Basically there is a "root" directory of your phone. Its where all the system files are stored and it let's you do a lot of stuff, but it also means you can screw a lot of stuff up to (like really screw it up). On default you are locked out of here by the maker of your phone for various reasons. Rooting means that someone found an exploit to gain access to this folder. Usually what you then do is you find a way to inject superuser (a little app that gives root access to other apps later on). You use Odin in this case to install a stock Samsung rom (with superuser already put in the root directory of that modified ROM its installing) essentially this means you have root. Root allows you to install recoveries like clockworkmod (which you need to flash ROMs later.
Okay so that was my quick run through. At your point you need to go to YouTube and Google how to root the sgs3 and hopefully they should have one for your specific carrier. The process should be the same minus the files you flash. Essentially you should be looking for stock ROM (for your specific device) with superuser or supersu already installed. Then you should be finding a way to install clockworkmod once you have root. (You may be able to find a file or tutorial that does this in one go). I cannot emphasise enough about reading. You wouldn't be here had you read first and in the flashing business, if you don't want a sgs3 paper weight you should read first.
Oh and ROMmanager from the marketplace installs clockworkmod for you (ONCE YOU HAVE ROOT) its simple. Just download it from the play story. Click flash recovery. It will load a bit and your done. Then you can reboot into it. ROM manager (the paid version is unnecessary) it just adds extra features you don't yet need. Look at it once you have flashed your first few ROMs.
Best of luck. Let me know and slap that thanks button. I wrote this on my phone.

Hey guys im trying to root my device so i can install some lightweight custom roms. Ive been following this guide i found online
http://androidcritics.com/how-to-root-and-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-galaxy-s3-i747/
I basically did this
Installing Clockwork Recovery Mod
Find the recovery image file which is clockworkmod.tar
On your Samsung Galaxy S3 I747, press and hold down the volume down, power, and home buttons
Once your at the warning screen, press volume up to accept
Launch the Odin program from your computer
In Odin, find the PDA tab and click it
Find the clockworkmod.tar.md5 file in the unzipped recovery image file
Press start to begin flashing the recovery mod
BE PATIENT! and wait until your device reboots
Once your device has fully rebooted, you can start installing root
It loaded on the phone fine. I then did this
Installing Root
Transfer the root.zip file onto your phone from your computer

Hi eddy,
It sounds like you didn't get CWM to stick after your flash with ODIN. You need to uncheck the reboot option in odin and then after the flash is done pull the battery and go directly into CWM loader by booting with the volume up + power + home button method. This will give you cwm rather than the stock loader you seem to be trying to use. You're almost there!

He also said root wasn't sticking. He needs that before he can cwm to stick

I think he can't install the superuser.zip from cwm after boot because he's allowing the stock rom to overwrite his cwm flash ... he's gotta pull his battery after the odin flash to get root in. That's what worked for me. once he's got root he can use rom manager to upgrade to cwm 6.x

He shouldn't need cwm to install. If flashes a firmware with root already injected he can then just use rom manager to install clockworkmod for the first time since rom manager just needs root which he will have. You can root and keep the stock recovery on at the same time
I think his biggest issue is root not sticking. Til he does that cwm wont install
