Yes, thats how Skype works. I have tested this on the Skype Beta App
I tested Skype Beta too, but it actually called up a number for me...
So no free calls yet (for me at least)...
as far as i know there is only skype lite beta available and you can't use voip.
they removed the normal skype app because of some verizon cooperation:
Code:
blogs.skype.com/en/2010/03/skype_mobile_out_now.html
They also removed the Windows mobile version:
Code:

sry, i cant post links here :/
ware can i download any verion of skype for android ? i couldnt find any drove me fruit loopy looking ty afics your links are no good they just link to skype who ask you tp put ya phone number in then send you a link to the mobile version of the site that then tells me theres no version of skype for my phone ami missing somthing ? which i already spent hours going round and round in circles with i truly hate skype. because i have credit friends and family on it, personally hope skype burns so people change.
No Skype version available until Skype makes it available. There used to be fring but they are having issues with Skype at the moment and the only people with true Skype for Android are Verizon customers.
Hello companies, there's a whole world other than America available.

as fring has pulled skype integration your best bet is probably nimbuzz, some people swear by it but i never got on with it personally.
i use skype lite as even though it dials a local number i have unltd landline calls on tmo in the uk so it is the same as free for me

sorry but thats skype light, it doesn't use voip, it calls a number
IM+ is going to have Skype support on their next version, currently beta is available (3.0.6), but Skype stays online only 5 minutes (beta limitation only)
So, until next IM+: Fring + Skype Lite + Nimbuzz
I use Fring, you can find it on market. Fring supports msn, icq, skype, +++
i know but can you talk over skype?

And Skype say they didn't ban Fring. Ho hum :-(
http://blogs.skype.com/en/2010/07/fring.html
In this case, however, there is no truth to Fring’s claims that Skype has blocked it. Fring made the decision to remove Skype functionality on its own.

Has anyone been able to get sipdroid to connect to the Skype network for voip calls?
I'm not really interested in skype chat, I just want the skype to skype calling.
I changed to Nimbuzz.
It offers a constant Skype VOIP connection.
so you can actually talk/phone?
IM+ 3.x has been released, Pro version ($4.95) seem to work well with Skype and MSN, free version is logging out Skype after 5 min inactivity.

Ok so i have tried a few IM services, and i want to know what you folks think is the best one you have used.
I have tried Verichat back in the day but cannot seem to find it anymore
I just had Palringo and HATE it because i am getting spam IMs
I had agile messenger too and it seems to be the best out there.
Hopefully someone has a better suggestion. PLease make sure is does not use your SMS cause i would just use windows messenger but i do not have an unlimited text plan.
Thanks
I guess no one has a messenger service they like

Do you mean unlimited data plan? Messenger does not use SMS, and I use that and it's flawless.
Nimbuzz. So far, the only one that can tap into Facebook chat, along with bunch of other chat-services, such as Messenger, ICQ, AIM etc.
My favourite IM is "BeejiveIM" the icq function is better then all the other icq IM clients.
Try 'BeejiveIM', the graphics are really amazing but it is for QVGA (still work on WVGA although)
I used to use Nimbuzz and quite liked it, but I've moved to Fring which gives you access to Twitter (which is excellent) and apparently Facebook chat (though I haven't tested this). Free of course.
My favorite you already said you don't like....Palringo
I never get spam ads from it...
BeeJive I had on my TyTn II but cannot get it to work on my HD, Ill try Fring again but i think there was something about it I didnt like, and have not tried Nimbuzz, thanks.
So would it be possible to make an offical-ish looking app that works like MSN on blackberrys? I bloody hate the 3rd party IM clients im currently stuck with, I only care about MSN not AIM or bloody Yahoo.
I don't mind making up art work, I can't code to save myself however

what do you mean that works on blackberrys?
If you mean one that can communicate with BBIM then thats not possible, thats only for Blackberrys.
Also there is no official android MSN app. Ebuddy works fine, you only need to add a MSN account and then it wont show or ask you about anything else. It will auto sign in your MSN account when you launch your app and then you can start chatting away. There is nothing wrong with Ebuddy
msntalk is free on the market. working very fine for me. its not adfree but not that disturbing

No no for blackberry or to communicate, I mean something that looks like the MSN app provided by Microsoft/Blackberry, I am aware of eBuddy as I currently use it, In my opinion it is nasty but also the best of them, Why I was hoping to go about getting a official looking MSN app on Android
I would love a real MSN Client. Like in Windows Mobile and BlackBerry.
With:
- Change your User Icon
- Change your Nickname
- Change your Personal Message
- Offline Messaging
- Able to send and receive buzzers
- Able to send and receive files.
- While looking good without crappy iPhone-style bubbles (Looking at you eBuddy!)

I would be happy with just standard messages with the ability to change Nickname and personal message, User icon would be a bonus all the other stuff im not TO fussed about, especially since "Windows Live" has changed the send on files like photo to a sharing experience
Is it just T-Mo UK that blocks MSN via 3G, then (that is, the official version on :1873).
As far as im aware the "Official" version is made and provided by Three and only works on there network
Any pictures of this 'Three' version? Also, isn't there a way to reverse engineer their stuff
OT: I prefer to use Google Talk for chatting. Is anyone else using transports to connect to ICQ and MSN via Google Talk?

I have it on my phone but it's very basic.
I can't take a picture of it because I don't get a 3G singnal in my house. When you open MSN if it dosen't detect a 3G network it says Please connect to the 3G network and then just shuts down.

Thats why transports are used to chat to your ICQ and MSN (and other IM services) buddies from Google Talk.
As I said anybody that I actually want to talk to is on MSN, In the UK ICQ or AIM weren't really popular, so everyone of interest is on MSN
Correct!
And I said I'm chatting to MSN buddies from Google Talk App...
MSN Talk is the best I've found so far, does everything you want and has a very nice UI aswell.

Can you tell which phone / rom / gtalk version ? And possibly the jabber msn transport server (doubt that would make a difference, protocol is protocol) ?
Hey Guys,
I was just wondering.
Now that Fring and Skype had their falling out and fring removed the ability to make skype calls, is there anyway around it?
I mean Fring/Skype was one of the main reasons why I went Evo instead of iPhone4.
I know they have facetime but thats only on Wifi with other facetimers. For a while there I was in heaven being able to chat with all my skype friends while on the go...
I know there's a skype lite beta in the wild that kind of helps a little but doesn't Verizon Androids have skype?
Do they have the ability to do front facing cam chat?
And if so, can't it be ported to other non verizon phones???
(I know, I'm full of questions. What can I do, I'm a noob at this )
+1, is there an old version of Fring out there with Skype support still in it, a non-Verizon-locked version of Skype, or a hack that can be used? Not having Skype is a bit of a killer for me.
Man and I was wanted to try out Skype!
big bump, any solutions?

I believe they disabled skype support on their server so you can't just get an old version. It most likely won't let you connect to your skype account, given that people were having problems connecting before the skype-less version was released..
I know there is a skype beta app floating around the apps and themes section but it doesn't do video chat.
verizon reserved rights for mobile to skype calls. as far as i know you can only use video chat to other iphones and front facing cameras.
Hello, Newbie to Android world here - receiving my HTC Desire, hopefully, next week.
Just wanted to share some information regarding an application called "LiveProfile" which will soon be released that incorporates BBM for Androids, if im not mistaken.
Anyone heard of it?
Just looked it up and from what I can see its a replacement for bbm. It will work across iPhone, blackberry and android. Basically MSN messenger for phones.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I've been using a BlackBerry for practically 2 years now and I have to say perhaps the only application that has the BB stand out among its rivals is the BlackBerry Messenger - now with LiveProfile, I'm very excited for the upcoming release of this app.
What's the advantage of this over WhatsApp or PingChat? Those are both multi-platform already, and with WhatsApp there's no need for a user name as it uses your phone number, so anyone in your contacts with the application is automatically in your friend list.
Yeah, why another one? ... PingChat is OK.
I know, competition is good.
But for this kind of app, I just want ONE ...
It seems impossible.
Wait until someone created multi of multi IM of multi IM ...
PingChat is a good one.
MJwitter: well, quite frankly, i believe there is one prime advantage over iphone's Whatsapp in terms of privacy. With "whatsapp" you do not necessarily have to have the contact on your list, just as long as he has your number he is able to send you msgs - which a lot of people would find annoying (you could probably ignore them, im not sure, but its a terrible feature initially)
gogol + lukehluke: i have never heard of ping chat before. i'll have to google it. However, as i have mentioned earlier i believe this application is intended to merge bbm, whatsapp and so on all under one roof - again I am uncertain of this information; however, hopefully this turns out to be the advantage of LiveProfile.
Nonetheless, thank you for sharing that information.
I just checked it out; however it seems to display an error when i clicked on "Join Now." Is this application not yet released?
there are quite a few BBM replacements available. They will never connect to BBM Contacts but provide the same functionality.
1. PingChat
2. Cnectd
3. LucidMessenger
4. Pmessenger
those are all i know of atm.
I'll try ping chat on HTC, just as soon as I get it by next week.
I heard about Pmessenger, but the reviews weren't very good.
Is WhatsApp ever coning out for android?, ive tried to convert a few people over to ping chat but they all use whatsapp

I'm confused. Help me. What is the differences between pingchat, whatsapp and IM messenger such ebuddy, fringe, and nimbuzz?
LOL try to be patient, my friend.
Ive been trying to do that for the past 24 hrs too. fortunately, a few ppl installed it.
however, they dont need to "convert" to pingchat, ask them to install it and they could use both ;D

Pingchat and Whatsapp? call themselves 'SMS Replacement' apps. Wherein they act like BBM so you can send a message whether a person is online or offline. These apps can only be used between their respective clients i.e. Pingchat-to-Pingchat, Whatsapp?-to-Whatsapp?
IM clients connect through AIM, MSN, Facebook &c.
Whatsapp Beta works. Google up Whatsapp android beta and youll find a download link on a facebook page. Install it and then you may get authorization error just wait like 1 day and try again and it will work. Been working well cant find any bugs with it yet.
I tried what you said but only info seems to say the beta is only available for people living in san fansisco and whatsapp put the app on your phone from there office?, cant seem to find a download link or apk file, if you have a link can you post it or reply to me with a pm to the link please, thanks.

yea like i said install it it will fail just wait and try again tommorow and it will start working. lots of people have reported success after waiting a while
Cool, i'll update in a day or 2 if its working, did you email them to request to be a beta tester or just try it after a few days and it worked without emailing them?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Didn't send an email
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Cool, its started working.
Ok, my quick review - pingchat vs whatsapp
Its alot faster than pingchat in terms of messages being delivered, sometimes pingchat lags a very long time and also pingtchat soelmetimes doesnt give notifications unless you open the app, so whatsapp wins on those two.
But pingchat has a MUCH better look and feet to it, and it works on phone numbers & ID's so you can use either, but whatsapp only works over phone numbers, so unless i have the persons phone number i cant message them on whatsapp, but on pingchat you can just use there id and dont need there phone number so pingchat wins on that.
So both have goods & bads, ping chat is free though which is a plus, if you check in the account info in the whatsapp beta, it says it expires in November 2010, so i asume thats when it goes live in the android marketplace, it also has an upgrade option so it will definatly be a paid app when its released and have a limeted free use period
More people use whatsapp so its better "at the moment", but pingchat has a much better feel to it, so hopfully more people start using pingchat.

What do you mean they are not supporting it no more? I recently had a big argument with them about it because they wouldn't allow it to be downloaded by phones they don't sell even tho it works on all android devices above 2.0, they clearly stated to get a three phone to get free msn and skype calls, to which i told them to shove it right up their ars.
Already have the msn app but its an older version and very slow even on my o2x, and doesn't respond well to being minimized, i cant find anything in the search a million things turn up when i search three skype app or msn.
